A (brief) Look at Sims 3's Edge Smoothing Technique

TLDR: If you have a good enough GPU, this is going to tickle it just a little. But if you are having FPS problems from lack of GPU power, absolutely disable this. Over my 10+ years of playing Sims 3, going through many different computers with a wide spectrum of specs, one thing never changed: Edge Smoothing ALWAYS caused slow downs for me. Yes. This little slider. I tried looking into it, and i guess i have a bit of answer why.

So, this one in particular has always been an outlier to me. Modern, frequently used anti-aliasing techniques on games usually do not have "sliders". Either you have it on, or you have it off. This immediately set off an alarm in my head: this is not your usual FXAA, which a big majority of games use. This is something else!

The first thing i went after was finding out what tech was behind it. It had to be something with levels (low, medium, high). My first step was looking into the graphics rule file to look for more info, and our mystery almost ends here.

There! FSAA, short for Full-Screen Anti-Aliasing and varying levels (2x, 4x and 8x sample rate). But there is one small detail: no game developer, in sane mind, would actually put FSAA as an anti-aliasing method. Not even Sims 3, with all its spaghetti code. Why? FSAA works by pretty much rendering multiple times the display resolution, then downsizing it to fit your display. Meaning... if you played Sims 3 at 1440p, and used the high setting... You would be virtually playing at something beyond 8K. Yes, you read that right. Needless to say, nothing would run this. By this alone, i would rule out FSAA. But FSAA is a primitive, super performance intensive solution. There are others... Here he is: MSAA (Multisample Anti-Aliasing)! MSAA is like that younger, smaller sibling of FSAA. It uses a technique similar to FSAA, but is less intensive in consideration due to not applying calculations to every single pixel on the screen (it is a bit more in-depth than this, but i'm not going to go that far :P) This is exactly what Sims 3 uses, or, at least, the engine's implementation of MSAA. But it being less resource intensive does not mean it is a good implementation either. MSAA in Sims 3 is still slow, still costs far too much compared to more common techniques, such as FXAA, and WILL cost you some good amount of FPS. Anything rather than Low/2x is pretty much sucking your GPU in exchange for... nothing. In my tests, some scenarios had an increase of 15% to 20% in GPU usage for very little actual edge smoothing, even on low. This might seem minor, but a lot of people play Sims 3 in GPU-bound scenarios and might not notice that a fraction of their lag is coming from this. Sure, you have less jaggies, but at what cost? (anywhere between 2 to 15 FPS, if i had to guess /s) So... what should i do? Well, it is your game and computer, so it depends from case to case! Are you running Sims 3 on a notebook that is not gaming-focused? Disable it and test it yourself. You might have a bottleneck caused by your graphics chip and disabling this will let the steam off a bit, making your game run better. Are you running Sims 3 on a gaming notebook/computer/gadget/device? You are (probably) safe. Again, this is a recommendation for GPU-bound scenarios. You could always test it yourself and see if you have any improvements, but chances are, your GPU might run it just fine. But... my game has too many jaggies now! There are other methods of anti-aliasing that are far easier on the GPU. You can use something like FXAA Tool to inject FXAA into Sims 3 (this one is a bit tricky), or use ReShade and some FXAA/SMAA (or any other anti-aliasing methods, use your plugins to your heart's desire) to have similar effects. A drawback of these solutions is that ReShade generally affects UI too, and anti-aliasing UI and fonts can make them look a tad bit funky. Still, these should be easier on your computer than MSAA. MY PERSONAL TIP: Use something like ReShade and a lightweight FXAA plugin for gameplay, then you might enable Edge Smoothing to take pictures. Or just use ReShade with more aggressive AA plugins to make things smoother. Or smooth everything out in Photoshop ;) (and save before toggling between the two, my game crashed multiple times while enabling/disabling Edge Smoothing for testing. Might be just me, but better safe than sorry.)

But before i go, fun fact: the game disabled edge smoothing automatically in the config files regardless of what GPU it detects you having. Guess they are scared their technique might crash and burn your fresh RTX 4090. /s

For context, he's porting the mod to the latest tModLoader version currently (it was originally designed in 1.3) before he starts work on new content. I don't know if pre-1.4 had these switch statements or if this was part of optimization for 1.4 - I'd guess the latter, since that was a big update.

Your statement about the if/else loop just being a library probably holds true across all versions, though. (Again, I have a gamer's understanding of code, not a coder's, but I think I get what you mean by that.)

Did you know that every single item in Terraria is part of the same if/else loop?

Even with my tiny amount of coding knowledge, I'm capable of being horrified.

Spamton and Papyrus are Strangely Similar...

An interesting thing I found is that Spamton and Papyrus (from Undertale at least) both have a lot of pretty similar qualities. 

List of similar qualities: 

-Both act very prideful and loud (both talk in caps) but are actually very obviously insecure 

-Both are not very good in handling friendships and are very lonely 

-Both loudly project their own feelings on the main character while denying they feel these feelings themselves 

-Both willing believe anyone who stops to listen to them for a little while is definitely their friend (Papyrus with Frisk and Spamton with Kris) 

-Both have eccentric dressing styles that they find the height of fashion 

-Both like cars and driving (Papyrus with his car bed and dreams of driving and Spamton when he sold cars and when he talks to Kris about taking rides around town in special “Cungaderos”) 

-Both have people talk about them behind their backs in a sort of pitying way 

-Both loudly exclaim their dreams and how they hope to achieve them. They were both very optimistic about these dreams while others say they would never achieve these dreams. These dreams are not actually what would make them happy though. (Getting into the royal guard, becoming a Big Shot) 

-Both can heal you when battling (Papyrus heals you if you lose at his battle, Spamton can heal you if you press F1 even though he is fighting you) 

-Both really like Mettaton (Papyrus likes Mettaton in general, Spamton really likes how Mettaton’s body looks even if he doesn’t know him personally) 

-Both have a unique laugh (Papyrus’ NYEH HEH HEH and Spamton’s HAEAHAEAHAEA) 

-Both appear to easily idolize people on TV (Papyrus loves Mettaton’s shows and idolizes being like him, Spamton really idolizes Mike from the 1997 Big Shot commercial and idolizes being like him) 

It seems like they are very similar. If this is true though, why do they seem to have such differing views on life? It may be that Spamton is older than Papyrus and was led down a bad path by someone he thought would help him. In a way, Papyrus may be what Spamton was like before he was abandoned by everyone, controlled unwillingly, and shown so much depressing information about the world that he lives in that he went crazy. Spamton (despite fandom headcannons) also doesn’t have a brother and was grown up told that he needed to Advertise as an Addison (even if he wasn’t very good at it without help). 

It is also implied that Spamton was exactly like the Addisons before but was shrunk in by falling into the Queen’s acid lake. If this was true, he may have looked a little like this picture below (I’m also just noticing this now, but I think the green pants on the other Addisons may have also been a clue of what happened to Spamton’s legs as the green is the same color as the Queen’s acid). If he did look like this, then he also would have appeared to pose a very similarly to Papyrus and had his white complexion.

Other visual similarities include their perpetually smiling faces. Spamton himself also has pointed cheekbones that look skeletal. Both of their face portraits also have slightly off-kilter eyes (one shorter or smaller than the other).

They also both do the silly eyes.

I wonder if this has implications to why Spamton was seen as important by that mysterious caller that is implied to be Gaster… 

Plus some other weird connections...? 

-Spamton used to go to the Cyber Grill with his friends before he was abandoned by them. Papyrus is stated to really hate Grillby’s. 

-Swatch has stated that Spamton was a valued customer of his Café at Queen’s mansion. It seems like the only food they serve there is SpaghettiCode besides the ButlerJuice. Papyrus loves Spaghetti. 

-Papyrus very much likes order and cleanliness. He hates how trashy Sans room can get. Spamton is noted to really hate living in his, “GOD DAMN GARBAGE CAN.” 

-Papyrus is noted to like cool sunglasses in promotional art (so much so that he sometimes puts sunglasses on his shoulders). Spamton also likes cool sunglasses.
