The Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory added a new neutron scattering instrument to its powerhouse of discovery at the Spallation Neutron Source, charting new territory for neutron imaging through artificial intelligence. In July, DOE's Office of Science approved the final commissioning of the Versatile Neutron Imaging Instrument, or VENUS. "It's a dream come true," said ORNL neutron scattering scientist Hassina Bilheux. "It has been an honor and privilege to work with so many talented people dedicated to seeing VENUS through." Thanks to its cutting-edge features and the world's most intense pulsed neutron beams, VENUS will help transform research in multiple areas of science. These include energy storage for better batteries, materials science for more efficient building materials, plant physiology for drought-resistant plants and more.

Those of you who tuned in to my last horrified ramble about painting damage might've picked up on when I talked about craquelure, lifting, and flaking. Well, here we have some examples caused not by physical stressors alone, but by water damage

Damage caused by exposing an oil painting to water begins within 5-10 minutes. The resultant effect depends on the solutes in the water and the regularity to which the painting is exposed. Water causes the various components of the painting to swell, and as each part swells to different degrees through a combination of its natural reactivity and varying exposure to the water, you get lifting (the hinging of the paint and ground layer entirely off the canvas), and spallation (the separation of layers due to the stresses caused by the swelling action).

It is fairly typical to see the loss of both the paint and ground layer from the canvas by this action. The canvas, being textile, swells and shrinks in a way that causes the adhesion between the ground layer and the canvas to fail, resulting in complete loss.

Damage tends to follow faultlines as the weakest parts are subjected to the distortion of the canvas. In this case, the technique used by the artist (many thin layers of paint) engenders this typical damage pattern, where fissures and lifts roughly follow a gridlike pattern, reflecting the weave of the canvas. Similar colours will exhibit similar damage owing to the like-like nature of their chemical composition, as seen above where the brown of the tree has fissured, by the yellow of the sky has not.

Water will also deposits salts, which fall out of solution as the water evaporates and causes further damage as crystals form, and will also act as a medium for acid attack.
