Summary! In which Harry Potter decides to give his girl the best Christmas she could ever have.

Set after they graduate from Hogwarts, Harry being adorable, no warnings just pure Christmas time fluff.

Harry Potter was on a mission this December.

Give Y/N L/N the best Christmas ever.

Harry and Y/N had spent Christmases together before, at Hogwarts in the Gryffindor common room, Grimmauld place, and now for the first time they're celebrating in the brand new apartment they had bought together.

And he wanted it to be the most memorable Christmas for her yet.

Harry knew Y/N better than anyone else, there was no doubt but when it came to present hunting, he was at a hault.

It seemed as though all recollection of what she had wanted in the past had disappeared from his memory.

He stopped at every shop he could think of hoping it'd spark a memory and give him some insight, but none of that had come.

So he put the present hunting on pause and went to the next stage of his plan.

Decorations.

He went to every shop in London, grabbing every garland, wreath, fake snowman, and small plastic tree he could get his hands on.

While Y/N was away at work on December first, he put all of the decorations up, tightening every light bulb, fixing every loose strand, making sure the star on top of the tree was aligned perfectly, he stood back as he put the finishing touches.

It was as beautiful as she was, as perfect as he had envisioned it.

Y/N had greeted him later that night with a smile bright enough to shun out the sun, it brought a familiar warmth to Harry's heart. But he wasn't done just yet.

Y/N had been stunned when she had walked into the living room of their apartment.

On the wall was a white screen, a projector, a wall that had been covered in moving memories that seemed to have been taken out of someones mind and plastered across the wall.

Y/N was on the verge of tears seeing the years pass by before her own eyes, from Harry and Y/N's first meeting, first day, their shenanigans throughout the years, their first kiss, first I love you, first Christmas together, her life with Harry stood before the pair, showing exactly how far they had come from being timid eleven year old's.

Y/N turned around and engulfed Harry in the biggest hug he felt he had ever received, wrapped in a loving warmth that he never wanted to stop feeling.

"I take it you like it," Harry questioned happily, as he smiled into her hair.

"I love it Harry," Y/N replied swiftly, a grin seemingly sewn across her face. She looked up from Harry's chest, where she had buried herself, "I love you Harry, thank you for the best Christmas ever."

"I love you more, love." Harry had returned, the day had just started and his mission had been accomplished.

What the rest of the day was a mystery to Y/N, whatever Harry had in store for her would be worth a lifetime of memories, but none of these material things had mattered.

All Y/N ever needed to have a perfect Christmas was a warm fire place, a blanket or two and the man she loved oh so much.

definitely feels a little bit of the middle child syndrome, but not from anything her family did; rather it's born more from her own insecurities about her place in her immediate family and extended family. she's always felt like she needed to do a bit more to stand out, to be a bit louder in order to be heard.

dom feels a bit aimless in life as she never really made a life plan, but rather had floated through various ideas of what she would do with her life until everything started to go wrong. joining with the knights seemed like a good idea at the time, and she definitely doesn't regret joining ( though she does feel an immense amount of guilt over how things turned out ).

is a leader in the knights & a bartender working to gain information and the like but also occasionally works with her uncle charlie with dragons. in another universe, maybe she could have dedicated her time fully to dragonology or magizoology, but in this one, she helps where she can ( and takes pictures of cute baby dragons as often as she can ).

always down for a good time or going on adventures, even if they're a bit on the dangerous side. she's definitely more of an act first, react a bit, and maybe think later type of person. she really enjoys nights spent at the pub with friends or sneaking into forbidden or abandoned places.

Favorite Albums of 2023

1. End of Everything - Mega Bog

Never heard it. What does it sound like?

Like Kate Bush meets Sparks? Actually, Mega Bog’s own website puts it much better, if perhaps a tad more aspirationally: “A seemingly disparate jukebox of sounds – ranging from Thin Lizzy, Bronski Beat, Franco Battiato and Ozzy Osbourne to 90’s house classics like Haddaway’s ‘What is Love’ and Corona's ‘Rhythm of the Night’...”

OK… but what do YOU love about it?

Is this a dance album or a poetry collection? Trick question! It is both. You can enjoy these songs effortlessly as experimental pop, but this is a dark (yet hopeful?) collection that takes some effort to untangle. Equally great on headphones sitting alone in an unlit room or blaring out of speakers on a sunny day. No album this year blends complex soundscape with complex lyrics in a way that mystifies and entertains me like this one.     

2. Life Under The Gun - Militaire Gun

Never heard it. What does it sound like?

Like a heavier, angrier, rushed version of The Replacements? Or a lighter, more polished version of Minor Threat? Am I flailing because this album is well outside of my typical comfort zone? I am! Maybe this album is what happens when a guy (Ian Shelton) who is a big fan of The Beatles and Guided by Voices makes angry songs with his bandmates.

OK… but what do YOU love about it?

It is pure catharsis. No song grabbed me by the throat this year like Do It Faster. It is a perfect album opener. It is the sort of album opener that lowers your guard for what is to come—which is most helpful when what is to come does not neatly align with the sounds you typically seek out. Shouty singing, as I will uncharitably call it, has never been my cup of tea. Then I come across an album like this and it stops me in my tracks and makes me wonder how I had it all so wrong. 

3. My 21st Century Blues - RAYE

Never heard it. What does it sound like?

Like if Nina Simone had been born in 1990s London? Like if Alicia Keys turned it up a few notches on the pop dial? Like if Beyoncé did not have all that baggage of being superhuman?

OK… but what do YOU love about it?

It is a vulnerable pop magnum opus. It is one of those albums where depending on my mood my favorite song shuffles among seven or eight of them. RAYE has lived a lot of life, both personally and professionally, for someone in her mid-20s and she is not here to fuck around. There is a weight to these songs even when they have you bobbing your head.

4. Desire, I Want To Turn Into You - Caroline Polacheck

Never heard it. What does it sound like?

What if Dua Lipa were a witch with voice spells who loves Enya and also the Yeah Yeah Yeahs?

OK… but what do YOU love about it?

I don’t know, maybe I’m just impressed when someone unpacks the last 40 years of pop music and assembles twelve songs that are wholly original and wholly distinct from one another, but which somehow form a cohesive album. Dang indeed.

5. the record - boygenius

Never heard it. What does it sound like?

Like Neko Case, Chan Marshall and Feist started a supergroup. Or maybe like if Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus started a supergroup? Yeah, that’s more like it.

OK… but what do YOU love about it?

Everything. boygenius is the only supergroup I have ever cared about and long may they reign.

6. Prestige - Girl Ray

Never heard it. What does it sound like?

Like boygenius made a disco album.

OK… but what do YOU love about it?

It is pure pleasure. All of the albums above are pretty knotty, often heavy. This one just moves butts. Sometimes that’s more than enough.

7. Heavy Heavy - Young Fathers

Never heard it. What does it sound like?

Like Fela Kuti meets LCD Soundsystem. But not as earth-shattering as that sounds. Holy moly.

OK… but what do YOU love about it?

It surprises me every time I listen to it. Sometimes experiments go boom in a terribly unexpected way you want to forget; other times experiments go boom in a spectacular way you need to keep studying in order to try to understand.

8. Portraits - Birdy

Never heard it. What does it sound like?

Like if Kate Bush was in her mid-20s today.

OK… but what do YOU love about it?

Nostalgic synths, a powerful voice, good songwriting, some heartache, some longing. Simple pleasures.

9. Angel Numbers - Hamish Hawk

Never heard of it. What does it sound like?

Like Ben Folds meets Stephen Merritt, but very Scottish.

OK… but what do YOU love about it?

Ben Folds but Scottish was not enough? It is all about the songwriting. Hawk blends the observational skills of a novelist, the tenderness of a poet and the bars of a rapper. On top of that, singer-songwriter work that soars sonically like this is catnip for me. Sprinkle in some literary references and art references and I will be requesting an application to join your cult posthaste. Above and beyond all that, I find this album hilarious. This is not an opinion I seem to share with most critics, nearly all of whom have glowing things to say about the album. Some detect “a trace of flippancy,” whereas I see an ocean of it. I vacillate on whether this is a misread on my part. Ultimately, it does not matter. In fact, it only adds to my enjoyment of the album. What if me and The Hawk Man are speaking our own secret language? This is the way all of your favorite music should make you feel, is it not?

10. Life Is Infinite - Wings of Desire

Never heard of it. What does it sound like?

Like U2 meets Cocteau Twins. Wow. That is perfect and also I deeply regret it. If that’s overwhelming and/or nauseating then let’s say Bloc Party meets Belle and Sebastian. Still no? Fine! Fill in your own blanks: soaring rock with pop sensibilities meets guys and gals wondering what it’s all about with pop sensibilities.

OK… but what do YOU love about it? You don’t even like U2, right? RIGHT?!

Is this the album on the list that I am most likely to distance myself from within a few years, maybe even months? Undeniably, yes. Is it also the debut of a band that is on the cusp of being a big thing? That would not surprise me at all. Isn’t it sometimes all a bit too much? No denying that. But does it have sonic and emotive qualities that make me want to stand up and proclaim, “MUSIC! I LOVE MUSIC!” over and over? Emphatically so. Well, surely with this level of enthusiasm the album must be released. I mean, I have heard it in full, right? Regrettably, no. It comes out on December 8, but enough of it has been released via singles that I am calling my shot.

Alright, that out of the way, basically, Bloody Sunday and Trafalgar Square refer to a mass protest by laborers that was met with (brutal) police and military suppression, resulting in continued protests. A group of aligned labor groups had chosen the square, symbolic of the meeting of London's East and West Ends, as a place to protest poor working conditions and low wages.

In addition to the Socialist Democratic Federation, which is discussed at length in (2), the following organizations were present/organizing the attendees at the square: The Socialist League and the unemployed, the Trade Union, and "radical groups." (1) A march was planned, where speakers would address the crowd, and they would make demands. The crowd instead was met by both the military and the police, who fought back brutally, at least according to one of the leaders of the movement, Williams Morris.

Following the events in the square, another prominent leader of the labor rights movement that hadn't been present at the march was run down and killed, sparking further protest over his funeral.

Finally, I want to quote this paragraph from (3) about Bloody Sunday, tying the Jack the Ripper murders to a larger sociopolitical labor rights movement:

"Police brutality in Trafalgar Square in November 1887 brought out thousands to the funeral parades that followed, and embedded 'Bloody Sunday' into the language of public political protest. In the summer of 1888, young Bryant & May women match workers in east London brought their defiant solidarity against their low pay and their hazardous work to the pavements of Westminster. By autumn Whitechapel women walked their neighborhood in fear and public fascination, when 'Jack the Ripper' exposed the lives of their sisters in poverty. London's political culture was being transformed through social concern and sensation..." (3)

Essentially, because of the Jack the Ripper killings, prostitutes now had a reason to join with other women laborers in solidarity-- or at least their concerns have academically been connected; I'm definitely not an expert and I feel like I've done more than enough academic research for someone who is months away from having graduated college 10 years ago and works in fucking retail.

Hopefully that's enough context.

Now, how does this inform my reading of The Phantom of Whitechapel and Moriarty the Patriot?

Part 2: Moriarty the Patriot's Plot

So, remember, in Moriarty the Patriot, the Jack the Ripper killings were being done by organized criminals to spur on a revolution. They want the proletariat to rise up and they aren't afraid to use people they view as inhuman to trigger it.

William sees this right away. After all, other than the fact that he (mostly) doesn't use the underprivileged as bait and pawns, he's doing the same thing. The sensational murders are just somebody else's play.

But, what's truly interesting is the bottom panel, where William brings up something that the Yard had been concerned about earlier:

The Yard might think the Vigilance Committee is the mastermind, instead of this unnamed criminal force, but regardless, William and the Yard are indeed thinking along the same lines. The clash between poor citizens and the police is bringing back memories of another recent clash. It's happening again.

Clearly, the Yard doesn't want to deal with armed rebellion. Their job is to stop it. And the politicians of the time (real life too...(1) and (2)) are exactly with the Yard. They don't want to make concessions or make leeway for commoners, they don't care if conditions improve, and they don't care if they prevent the right to protest in the meanwhile.

Lestrade is right about there being forces above the Yard breathing down the commissioner's neck.

But William... what he's looking at is the way the agitation is taking place. The murders are public, with letters to the press, etc, to create hysteria, and to create the conditions where the people of Whitechapel are confronted with the fact that the people in power are not caring for them. The Yard doesn't care how many prostitutes die. How many citizens in Whitechapel die. They've specifically made disarming the Vigilance Committee their goal.

That's true regardless, and by killing people that are powerless, it becomes exceptionally clear to the populace. They will rise up against the police that fight them instead of protecting them. The revolution will happen.

I want to claim that this cell of agitators is acting disingenuously, but it's only apparent from the text that they don't value all people evenly.

Whatever reason it is they seek proletariat revolution, it's clear they are not ideologically Marxists.

"Dregs of society" "All we did was eliminate some whores." "Society's rubbish." "With coin they'll follow you anywhere." "Worthless." "Meager."

How can anyone leading a proletariat revolution say or believe these things?

"The strong devour the weak" is Machiavellian, not Marxist.

To make it even more personal, William and Louis grew up in Whitechapel. The abandoned library has been taken down, but it was fucking RIGHT HERE.

This group must be culled.

Part 3: My Conclusions

Personally, I read that these men are trying to stir up revolution as a way to gain power. Right now they don't have a lot, and if they control when and how a revolution happens, they can come out on top in the end.

it's clear that they aren't interested in actually changing the status quo, with the strong on top and the weak on bottom. They also aren't actually interested in people's fates.

What does that mean for the plotline and what is being said about Bloody Sunday?

So, obviously this isn't in alignment to the Moriarty Plan, because outside of the one man that Lord Enders murdered and ended up being the centerfold of the act on the Noahtic, we don't really see William using anyone who hasn't already pledged their life to his ideals (and he even tries to respect the dead bodies he uses to the best of his ability). We get a strong stance against it, while having a more "pure" movement being put forward by William et al.

The differences I see are namely: a) consent: most people dying for William's plan have chosen to give their lives to the cause b) respect: William views all people as people and c) punching up instead of down: the people who don't consent to dying for William's plan deserved it. They weren't just stupid, or worthless, or the dredges of society. They were committing crimes against humanity and getting away with it.

But... if these people did do this, and it did incite revolution, and William hadn't stopped it... would it be so bad?

William wouldn't join hands with them. But in a thought experiment where he did, or he didn't exist, what would happen?

A story on NPR recently was talking about how to predict when a populist uprising will happen, and how to tell how successful it will be. This kind of cell, the kind of cell that will gain power from the revolt, the kind of politicians that are the voices of protest, regardless of how corrupt they are... the positioning of these people is basically the strongest predictor of a revolt's success.

So sure, these guys are assholes. But they probably would have succeeded. They would have used the few to create revolution, just as Moriarty does.

To what extent would our world care about the methodology used? To what extent do those differences make a difference? Are the few still not sacrificed for the many? Are the remaining people not better off in the end?

The most informative article about Bloody Sunday was a commemoration of the centennial of the protest. Nothing in the sources I found looked back poorly upon the agitators fighting for labor rights at the time.

I don't think that would change even if these events actually had happened.

And, since William plans to die at the end, take his whole cell with him... what is to say that that someone like this group couldn't still take advantage of his plan to gain power?

Sure, these guys are dead now. But surely they aren't the only ones?

“In the Foot,” which closes side one of this ebullient cassette release, pulses with bouncy synths and urgent percussion, and yet, though it moves inexorably, it also exists in a sunny, expansive, drifting now. “Make it blurry,” croons the singer, in a nodding chorus, the words floating over stinging guitars, so that the physical momentum is undeniable, but so is the dreaming bit. Angel Ecology explores the fruitful intersections of jazz, pop, dance, jam and bossa nova, evoking Talking Heads, Os Mutantes and Stereolab. It grooves and it meditates at the same time.

A four piece, with members hailing from all over the world, Blurry the Explorer made one prior album, a self-titled notable for a spoken word guest appearance from Brian Eno. The band’s core members include Brooklyn-based drummer Jeremy Gustin (Star Rover, the Ah and support for Delicate Steve, David Byrne and Marc Ribot), Brazilian bassist Ricardo Dias Gomes (a mainstay of Gaetano Veloso’s band), the New England based experimental pop guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Dugré and London composer and guitarist Leo Matthew Abraham. Several of Blurry’s members have connections to the New England jam band Rubblebucket, and both Toth and Kalmia Traver make appearances on this tape.

The album starts strong with stately, lyrical “Leave It In the Air,” a cut where battering kit drumming is reinforced by breathy “ahs,” for a swaying, hip shifting propulsion. It might be Gomes singing, since the lyrics seem to be in Portuguese, though the words are distilled and abstracted into staccato blots of sound that burst like soap bubbles in the air. The beat lands hard, but the song itself is feather light. “My Jade Loves Me,” which follows, is the one that will remind you most of Talking Heads with its jabbing, sharp guitar notes, its butt-moving, subliminal thump of bass.  The title track, which comes on the cassette’s second side, flutters weightless and gorgeous on whispery vocals and a jangle of guitars. The Australian songwriter Indigo Sparke soars over dense beds of guitar and percussion. The sounds shift in and out of alignment, resolving into swaying, Brazilian beach sensuality, then decomposing into noisy experimentation. “The Best West Mess” lays down a minimalist, stick-figure beat, then entrances the ear with soft, undulating melody. The cerebral collides with the hedonistic in these cuts, so that you hardly know whether to dance or gaze into space. Maybe both?

Amid the final days of terrible 2020, there was a row on Twitter about the value of well-known American fashion brand Michael Kors.

“Someone posted a MK purse for Christmas talking about shes spoiled,” Twitter user @Lanazattitude posted Christmas Day. “1st of all MK been played out and thats not being spoiled.”

The lone tweet received around 1,000 replies and over 9,000 quote tweets, sparking a Black Twitter debate about luxury fashion and elitism. But no matter one’s personal opinions on Michael Kors, it is easy to see how quickly people are to undervalue American fashion brands compared to foreign titans like Chanel, Dior, or Balenciaga, to name a few.

The New York fashion scene has never enjoyed the grandeur of its sister fashion hubs London, Milan, or Paris. Many believe that this is due to New York’s lack of large heritage brands. According to former Wall Street Journal fashion and style columnist Christina Binkley, European fashion brands have historical roots in the luxury business due to their origins as artisanal houses. For example, the current French luxury industry owes much to King Louis XIV, who supported French luxury systems until his death in 1715, 61 years before the United States was founded.

This isn’t to say that the U.S. lacks a fashion heritage altogether. Since New York first established itself as a major international fashion force at the 1973 Battle of Versailles fashion show, the American fashion identity has been characterized by its free-spiritedness, prioritizing casual-chic practicality and comfort.

“Americans have a tendency to dress toward the middle,” Deirdre Clemente, fashion historian and curator, told Fashionista’s Maria Bobilo in 2017. “Starting at about the 1930s, dressing like you had money became uncool.”

This American way of “dressing towards the middle” helped make brands like Halston, Donna Karan, and Ralph Lauren influential. This free-spirited attitude can still be seen in American fashion brands today with the rise of athleisure, activewear, and streetwear, which are becoming increasingly popular among international markets. In particular, streetwear has become a powerful force within the industry, as seen with the appointment of Off-White founder Virgil Abloh to artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear in 2018 within the collections of luxury brands like Céline. Brands like Supreme have transformed the way consumers view luxury, reflecting a “bottom-up” trickle of influence in which consumers dictate trends rather than celebrities or traditional fashion industry authorities.

Still, it occasionally feels as if America’s fashion industry is on shaky ground. Even before the pandemic, which forced designers to move shows online or cancel altogether, New York Fashion Week had been labeled a relic that no longer aligned with the way Americans purchased clothing. As fashion trends came and went due to the influence of fast fashion, designers were drained creatively because of the excessive amount of collections produced each year. Foreign buyers and magazine editors often considered skipping New York to avoid the resulting tedious collection from overworked designers.

The ongoing crisis has only made things more uncertain. While stores like Neiman Marcus and J. C. Penney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020, other brands were forced to contact suppliers to cancel orders, creating financial uncertainty among overseas garment workers. But while specific categories have suffered because of government-mandated lockdowns, others — namely streetwear and athleisure — have only grown stronger. Though the money spent by Americans on clothing has steadily declined since 2018, online sales of leggings, hoodies, and sweatpants have boomed since March, according to Quartz.

Like any other industry, American fashion exists in a constant flux state due to internal and external forces. As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, the fashion industry must brace itself for more inevitable changes and perhaps some much-needed evolution. Perhaps Business of Fashion’s Lauren Sherman said it best in 2019:

“…let’s stop pushing an outmoded model of what an American fashion model should look like and embrace the entrepreneurial, outside spirit at the heart of Americanness, inspiring a new generation to shake things up.”
