Another reason why I *hate* the direction they went with Sparkpelt (as in not giving her any plot relevance - like being named Sparkfire and struggling with the legacy of being named and looking like Firestar) is that SkyClan received a prophecy telling them to "find the spark that remains", referring to Firestar's descendants. It's right there 😭

If Sparkpelt had been named Sparkfire i think it would have strengthened her and Nightheart's whole deal. If she were named Sparkfire, and felt proud of that it would add a layer to why she's so hurt by him regecting the legacy name, because to her its something that she loves and is proud of for herself, and wanted to share with her child, but him rejecting it would be more easily understood as her feeling like he's directly rejecting her.

Boom! Family tree with everyone’s designs edited now to fit the au and designs previously made. This is before Twig and Violet (so technically still VoS but the two come in halfway through; protags in the Broken Code Arc). Most of them have the same name except for a few for the sake of recognition.

i know ive said wc isnt really a main interest for me but something I am very disproportionately angry about and think about often is how much of a waste of a prefix sparkpelt is. like spark was a great prefix and they just used the most generic suffix in the series with it. there was so much potential and they just threw it away.

I wrote a little snippit for this that I'll put it under the cut, I'm so upset over them you have no idea

despite the war between Lucentclan and Fernclan being over, Newtstar decides that he, Pepperflare, and Violethope will go patrol the borders one last time before the sun goes down. They don't realize the scent of rain or the clouds forming in the distance, as they're crossing the beach, rain begins falling heavily and weighing down their pelts.

"Newtstar!" Pepperflare calls over the now howling wind, anxiety pricking in her paws as the rain brings back unwanted memories of Sablepaw being washed away in a flood four moons ago. "We should really go back to camp! I don't have a good feeling about this."

Newtstars ears flick in acknowledgement, "we need to be sure that Fernclan isn't up to anything. I won't lose anymore cats to those fox-hearts!" He argues back, claws digging into the sand as he thinks of their previous medicine cat, Rippleclaw.

"No sane cat will be out in this weather!" Pepperflare insists, "Especially Fernclan cats! They hate water!"

"I agree with Pepp-" Violethope begins, her meow quickly cut off by a deafening crash and flash of lightning. In the distance, the sound of trees cracking and breaking echo down the mountains.

All three clancats freeze, heads snapping to the horizon where they see a massive wave of water quickly making its way down the hill, rocks, trees, and other natural debris coming along with it. The clancats barely have time to process what was happening before the water reaches them and sweeps them off their paws and into the unforgiving ocean. Their lungs fill with freezing saltwater as they cry out for starclan to save them to no avail.

Newtstar is the first to open his eyes, the yellow a sharp contrast to the darkness around him. Stars now shine in his pelt, and reflect in his eyes as he takes in the vaguely familiar area. He had been here when he lost his first life protecting his clan from a dog the same moon Rippleclaw had been found dead on Fernclans border. It had been nice to see the tom again to be assured that he wouldn't be alone, their starclan guide, and Newtstars own kin, Shardfoam being there to keep him company.

He sits and sighs, watching the water drip from is glimmering pelt and dissappear into the stars beneath his paws. He couldn't help but feel as if he had let his clan down.

Pepperflare and Violethope join him soon, appearing with splashes of salt water and gasping breaths that didn't take any oxygen. The she-cats meet eyes for a moment, confused as they look towards their leader.

They realize the stars at the same time, dismay filling them. Quietly, they step forward to sit beside their leader in quiet mourning.

"I'm sorry it had to be this way," A familiar voice says, a cream tabby tom stepping into sight. Sympathy reflecting in his grey eyes as he looks at the warriors. Beside the medicine cat is a younger spotted gray apprentice, Sablepaw, who is looking at them with the same sympathetic look.

"Rippleclaw! Sablepaw!" Newstar cries, standing. "Whats going on? We can't actually be dead, right? What about my other seven lives?" The words tumble out of his mouth before he can stop them, needing answers. Beside him, Pepperflare tries to speak but just hacks up a mouthful of water. Violethope remains quiet.

Rippleclaw sighs, "Unfortunately there was no way for starclan to bring your body back, it was washed too far out to sea for it to be possible." He steps to the side, the area behind him now streching out into a vast area, stars littering ground. This was starclans hunting grounds. The medicine cat dips his head, tears in his eyes as his friends try to process their deaths, "Welcome to starclan, my friends. Here you can watch over and guide Lucentclan."

Down below the sky, Quailcall sits outside the medicine den, blue eyes watching the entrance of the camp. It's been far too long since the patrol had left, and the elder was starting to get a bad feeling. He looks up at the dark clouds as it stormed and shakes out his pelt before standing and turning to enter the den.

Sparkfire lays in a nest against the far wall, curled up tightly as she sleeps through the infection in her wounds. The she-cat twitches and whimpers in her sleep, shifting slightly. The tom silently makes his way to sit beside the nest, watching the slow rise and fall of Sparkfires back, half expecting it to stop at any moment.

Quailcall looks towards the entrance of the den once more, dread filling his belly. "Starclan help us." He says quietly before curling up close to the deputy and shuts his eyes in an attempt to sleep until the patrol returns.

I redesigned him again despite saying I would stop doing that... Prev design and old bio here.

He still has a lot of the same features as my previous design, i mostly just changed his pattern and coloring! I wanted him to be a rustier color!

I also changed his cheek fluff to be round, mostly just for an interesting face shape! his cheek fluff hangs a little more flat when he's older just to give him a more matured look (hes been thru some shit, his cheeks hath deflated)

Notes:

Firesight has chronic pain (and mobility issues later in life):

Fire has the Scottish Fold breed's mutation which effects cartilage in the body, this causes his ears to fold, but it also causes chronic joint pain and can progress into swollen and inflexible joints.

For Fire, he is has the heterozygous version of this mutation, which means that his disability progresses more slowly, as a young cat he does experience some joint pain, with some days being worse than others. He is able to medicate with his own chronic pain herbal mix he created as a Healer. However as Fire grows older his joints will worsen, and by the time of his old age he will be unable to jump and some days is unable to walk.

He is able to still use his medication to aid him and is able to lead a happy life, but he is disabled and I didnt want to leave that out of his character! It's important to have disability rep (and spread awareness of the issues with the Scottish Fold breed) and I hope I serve him justice!

People are so weird about Nightheart. Like, it's not exactly my favorite character but the sheer vitriol people show towards him seems a bit...excessive? Especially when compared to characters like Crowfeather. He's an edgy teenager for like 2-3 books ans he really grows from it into a decent guy...cat.

Sparkpelt doesn't seem to act particularly out of character either. As much as I enjoy the fanon Sparkpelt, the books always portrayed her as more conservative - not wanting SkyClan to come back, giving Twigbranch - her own apprentice and basically her brother's adopted kid - shit for changing Clans etc. There is also the matter of her relationship with Nightheart. While it's not her fault and Nightheart blows it out of proportion (he shouldn't even remember her not being present much after his birth), her interactions with him are awkward and rather formal and I genuinely appreciate seeing that. I'm sorry but I don't buy that she got over Larksong's death that easily and became comfortable in the role of a mother within one book.

Another matter entirely is that, as I said, Nightheart tends to be an overdramatic teenager and not exactly a reliable narrator. From what I remember, people were angry at Rootspring too for having an issue with his dad. But both of them grow from it? It's the whole point of their character development.

As for the name thing, that was kinda weird. Especially since you have characters literally named after other dead cats - Sorrelstripe, Hollytuft, Fernsong, Bristlekit, Graykit, Stemkit, Cinderheart (who was literally possessed). Also why Nightheart in particular would carry the burden of Firestar's legacy? When nearly half of the Clan is related to Firestar? Also Sparkpelt is right there. She should have gotten that arc, without question (if only they weren't cowards and named her Sparkfire, as intended)

(Wanna preface this with i really don't care about Nightheart's character, and add that i am trans and do NOT see the trans reading for his character.)

I'm 99% sure a lot of peoples dislike for Nightheart is absolutely just because of his legacy arc being odd and also his weird hatred of most of the women in his life.

Nightheart is not the only Firestar descendant. There are so many cats related and descended from Firestar it's not even funny. Placing all of Firestar's expectations on Nightheart alone makes absolutely no sense. Do you wanna know which cat DID have that lined up for them, only for their entire character to go no where?

Sparkpelt.

Nightheart's own mother. Who looks EXACTLY like Firestar, was born not long after he died, and who's Clanmates even said they thought she'd be named SparkFIRE, for goodness sake. She was a prodigy in AVOS, it was half the reason Alderheart was so bitter with her and yet... nothing happened.

Her character as a prodigy vanished not long after becoming a warrior. She snarked back at the imposter, defended her mother, almost died to dogs, had kids and then had to watch her mate and one of said kids die right in front of her. She went through Post Partum for like. maybe a month. she was BANISHED for a period of time, something out of her control, which Nightheart fully blames her for and claims she "abandoned him".

Nightheart's entire arc just... doesn't make sense. I don't get people claiming the trans angle either, because he just doesn't like his name. That's it. Cis People very frequently don't like their names, get their names changed, ect. They can have dead names. that is not exclusively a "Trans thing". His arc is just a mess and honestly we could've had this whole arc without it and it'd be fine. Up until his little quest with Frostpaw he does NOTHING to add to the plot or story progression. Even then, it could've been Frostpaw's pov anyways!

Nightheart just... isn't interesting. He's another boring male protag who we're supposed to pity and worship despite him doing fuck all when there are multiple other protags who are so much more interesting but get pushed to the side bc man pain is more important.
