Vehicle spotlight – Spectrum hovercraft
A Spectrum hovercraft is deployed from Koala Base in the episode Traitor. The Spectrum hovercraft was the primary guest vehicle of the Captain Scarlet episode Traitor, in which Captains Scarlet and Blue investigated several hovercraft accidents at Spectrum’s Koala Base training facility in Australia. This four-seater vehicle (two crew and two passengers) was shown being used by the base’s cadets…

...soo....this is Tripwire.
One of those nebulous things where technically he's an IDW-canon character, but...there's literally nothing about him besides his name. No visuals, no backstory, no nothing. So. He's mine now, and might as well be an OC.
He's a teenager (young Warborn, equivalent of 17), he's an albino (hence why the 'skin' portions of his body are SO BLOODY LUMINESCENT-PALE), and he's a Point One Percenter.
Abilities: People straight-up do not notice him if he doesn't want them to. He doesn't turn invisible or anything, it's just like people's eyes just simply pass over him, as though he's not there. He can make himself so unremarkable that nobody remembers they saw him, even as they're looking at him. He can also cause intense power surges with his scream (hiiiigh-pitched frequency that disrupts EMP fields), but this ability he really does not use. At all. The third ability is the fact that he has a near-supernatural knack for working out probabilities, and he uses this quite often to calculate the chances of success for almost EVERYTHING he does, or that those around him want to do...eeeven if most of the time people don't listen to him.
Alt-mode is that of an amphibious hovercraft ATV, whiiich is why he's built more like a motorcycle than a car -- aka he's rather SHORT. Also why the 'spokes' of his wheels look so weird: they tilt up to form the fans for his flight-mode, and thus are more solid than not. He's perfectly at home on land, in the air, or in the water, he just doesn't advertise this little fact.
Trip is a sweet, introverted kid. He's on the spectrum, and since discovering fidget toys from Earth, he always has at least one stashed on him somewhere, to help with the anxiety that DEALING with the day-to-day brings him. He likes people, but he's not so great with dealing with them. He's very intelligent, but his social cues are somewhat lacking, and he gets anxious enough that it can make him freeze up if he's not careful. He's highly sensitive to noise and texture and will avoid what he considers bad at all costs if he can, which usually means he avoids medbay like the plague because of the beeping noises the machinery makes in there. Puts his teeth on edge and he can't stand it.
Damus (Glitch) is something of his guardian, in that Tripwire usually winds up going to him for help if he's stuck on something or if something is wrong. Nothing official, just the Adult He Trusts Most. It's worked out so far.
He's friends with Bumblebee, Strongarm, the Sunnyside twins, and Smokescreen. He hasn't interacted with the other teenagers in this group much, but he's talked to the Jet twins, Gyre, and Solus Prime a few times. He's literally known Bumblebee and Strongarm since before the three of them had names, and Tripwire wasn't even old enough to talk properly yet.
small fun-fact, Drift has a bit of a crush on him and Tripwire is absolutely clueless.

VLD1x09 – “Return to the Balmera”
1x09 – “Return to the Balmera”
“Besides, it’s more like, ‘blam, blam, blam!’” I love when Shiro’s a dork.
As part of the team’s deliberations about an attack plan, Allura says they can track the Galra using Biothermal Life Indicator Point Technology. How would that track the sentries though since they’re robots? Anyway, the team has their plan, and everyone’s got their assignments. The Black Lion informs Shiro about the Jawblade when he’s trying to think of a way to take down some Galra battlements – given that at that point we’ve already seen Lance and Hunk take out battlements with Blue’s tail laser and Yellow just ramming into them, I don’t get why Shiro’s baffled about how to attack the battlements; just blowing them up has worked so far. Beyond that though, if I understand correctly, the Jawblades are an element of Voltron from the original? So, their inclusion in VLD is solely a nostalgia thing then because their design is kind of pathetic. The width of the Jawblade for the Black Lion is barely a bit wider than the Lion itself, so really, it wouldn’t be able to cut anything with the Jawblade and not slam fully into it.
Then Red starts shooting a special laser than melts things. Again, they’ve been doing fine just regularly blowing things up, so there’s been no narrative need for this fire beam. But the Galra’s big cannon is taken down, and it starts to fall, and everyone freaks out. If it falls and crashes to the ground, they think the impact will hurt the Balmera. They weren’t concerned with the debris from the other towers’ destruction, so why now? Also, if the Balmera cannot handle significant impacts on its surface, then it’s got a huge problem. The Balmera is large enough that Hunk previously mistook it for a planet or moon, so it’s big enough – which means it’s got enough gravity – that it would attract space objects. Meteoroids and asteroids would be something a Balmera would have to contend with.
To keep the tower from falling, Blue has an ice beam. At least the ice beam feels differentiated from a normal blaster, unlike Red’s fire beam, but honestly, I’m still not fond of these new weapons. Especially since the fire beam and ice beam are tied to the Keith/Lance rivalry. I’m so exhausted by stories using the cliché pairing of fire and ice as if they’re opposites. The thought behind it is so sophomoric – fire’s hot, ice is cold, thus they’re opposites. No, they really aren’t. They’re two totally different qualities. Ice is physics, a state of matter. Fire is chemistry, an actual chemical reaction. Fire and ice are not on a spectrum the way this pairing tries to portray them as; they’re totally different things.
I kind of like the mobile hovercraft the Paladins use in this episode; I don’t remember them being used much though throughout the rest of the series. The Paladins split up to do various tasks underground. Keith and Lance are paired together, with Lance proposing the idea that they shut the hanger doors to trap Galra fighters inside. Keith’s hand on the handprint of the Galra tech closes the door. That’s super convenient that the control system is set up to so easily and immediately give them their objective. I assume this moment was supposed to be the first foreshadowing that Keith is part Galra? Especially since Hunk uses a sentry’s hand for a handprint scan shortly afterward. How do sentries have handprints to scan anyway? They’re robots.
Hunk breaks a handful of Balmerans out of a cell. Shay’s been taken to the core of the Balmera. Shiro recognizes that they’re being drawn into an ambush, so he calls all the Paladins to reunite. The Balmera starts freaking out. With Lance and Keith under fire, Lance says, “We can’t shoot back. It’ll just make it worse.” If Lance and Keith returned fire and quickly took out the sentries that are blasting endless cover fire it would make things better, but the show wants some unnecessarily drawn out moment of Keith dropping in to sword the sentries while Lance invites them to shoot at him as a distraction. Hunk finds Shay, and all the Paladins end up trapped in the core chamber.
Meanwhile, the Castle Ship is under significant fire from a fleet of Galra ships. I don’t know why Allura and Coran hadn’t bothered to inform the Paladins of their situation until now when Lance asks her for help. That’s not exactly good tactical communication on the Castle’s part.
The Balmeran communication method of touching the Balmera and feeling Shay’s vibration and sending it to other Balmerans is… easy. Rax has a change of heart, accepts some blame for the situation, and wants to work to free Shay and ultimately all the Balmerans. I welcome Rax ceasing to be a jerk.
“You fool! You dare make plans without informing me?” Zarkon speaks in traditional villain-ese language. If the Galra Empire is as huge as it supposedly is, then various levels of its military would have to make plans without informing Zarkon of every little thing. For such a large organization as a military, the division of labor, and with it, many layers of decision making, is necessary. The idea that every decision, especially something like engaging in a point-of-incursion response to the Paladins’ assault on the Balmera, has to be run through Zarkon is unrealistic. The whole scene just functions to show Zarkon to be a typical cartoonish villain. I want better than that.
A Galra battle cruiser shows up, and it’s bigger than the Castle Ship. Allura is afraid the Castle Ship can’t handle being shot by the cruiser. Rax and some other Balmerans break Shay and the Paladins out. The Galra are trying to tractor beam steal the Lions, but the Paladins quickly recover their Lions and take to the sky and attack the Galra fighters. Again, the fire and ice beams are used for no real reason that regular blasters couldn’t handle. The cruiser shoots a sustained blast at the Castle Ship. The Paladins form Voltron, which we haven’t seen for a few episodes, so it’s kind of nice to see it again now. With Voltron engaging the cruiser, the Castle Ship is able to use its blasters to destroy the cruiser and a bunch of remaining fighters. Since the Castle Ship mostly just sits around getting shot at in this show, I had forgotten that it even had significant weaponry.
Our heroes think they have the chance to breathe and make repairs, but another Robeast lands on the surface of the Balmera, setting up the next episode.
I don’t really feel like there’s much to analyze in this episode. It’s mostly action oriented, it’s connected well structurally to the narrative from episodes before and to episodes to come. Overall, it’s an okay, decent enough episode.

Diesel punk wars

Diesel punk wars manual#
Armored vehicles and useable submarines are lessĬommon but still important innovations. Tractors, and diesel-powered electrical generators are even more important The airliner is the prime example of this, but cars, trucks, (better alloys, plastics, etc) makes machinery lighter, stronger, and more Internal combustion and electric power in combination with new materials Period technology encompasses everything found in Steampunk, but Man is dwarfed by his creations and things are subsumed into abstractions. World War I was still fresh in memory as the Great War, the most colossal conflict in the history of mankind. It also saw the first multinational corporations, large-scale social engineering, and mass political movements. This was the age of the zeppelin, the ocean liner, the flying-boat airliner, and the skyscraper. Still, during this period steam engines were gradually being replaced by diesel engines in many areas. The life of an ordinary citizen was far deeper influenced by the oil-burning locomotive, bus, ocean liner or neighborhood power plant. To be noted: unlike the 2000s, the Diesel-powered car in the 1930s was a rare curiosity, only a single model being put into small-scale production in Germany during that age, but on the other side the vast majority of the population could not afford cars back then. (On the other hand, noted reviewer Ken Hite described Children as "Not really diesel, and not really punk.") Pollak stated that it was intended to be on the "darker, dirtier side of Steampunk" and should be considered a "continuum between steampunk and Cyberpunk.". The term Dieselpunk was popularized by Lewis Pollak and Dan Ross in 2001 as the genre for their RPG Children of the Sun. World War II may still happen in some Dieselpunk settings, see below. Typically, Dieselpunk roots itself in urban and wartime settings of the 1920s to the late 1940s, both literally and figuratively 'down to earth'.Ī common point of divergence from our timeline is that The Great Depression never happened, leading to further economic and technological growth and less of the warmongering typical of the inter-war era. Two-Fisted Tales explore settings such as Heroic Fantasy, Space Opera, etc that are not properly a part of Dieselpunk, and Raygun Gothic tends to describe a period both chronologically and technologically later. Both grime and glamour have their place in dieselpunk.ĭieselpunk overlaps with Two-Fisted Tales and Raygun Gothic, but differs mostly in its Punk Punk theme. Like Steampunk, Dieselpunk is a genre dictated primarily by its aesthetics rather than by its thematic content. As this covers a broad spectrum, the precise sources of inspiration can vary greatly between dieselpunk works. Generally, dieselpunk can take inspiration from '20s German Expressionist films, film noir, 1930s pulp magazines and radio dramas, crime and wartime comics, period propaganda films and newsreels, wartime pinups, and other entertainment of the early 20th century. The protagonists are often Heroic Neutral and have low social status. The dieselpunk narrative is characterized by conflict vs the undefeatable ( nature, society, cosmic), strong use of technology, and Grey and Gray Morality. Early 1950s or Mid 1950s period, spiced up with retro-futuristic innovations and Dieselpunk hovercraft by Alexey Lipatov.Ī Punk Punk genre of Speculative Fiction based on the 1920s PAGES WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE IF THEY ARE MISSING BASIC MARKUP.īecause Steampunk isn't dirty enough. DON'T MAKE PAGES MANUALLY UNLESS A TEMPLATE IS BROKEN, AND REPORT IT THAT IS THE CASE. THIS SHOULD BE WORKING NOW, REPORT ANY ISSUES TO Janna2000, SelfCloak or RRabbit42. All new trope pages will be made with the "Trope Workshop" found on the "Troper Tools" menu and worked on until they have at least three examples.Pages that don't do this will be subject to deletion, with or without explanation. All new pages should use the preloadable templates feature on the edit page to add the appropriate basic page markup. All images MUST now have proper attribution, those who neglect to assign at least the "fair use" licensing to an image may have it deleted.Failure to do so may result in deletion of contributions and blocks of users who refuse to learn to do so.

Steven Universe: Marooned Together - Chapter Ten
(thanks again to @real-fakedoors for proofreading!)
It had now been ten years.
Viewed from space, Lapis and Stevonnie's watery world looked much like Earth once had, if Earth were pockmarked by small islands rather than continents. The most notable differences were the twin, light green moons, one much larger than the other, that orbited the planet. Nothing had entered or exited its atmosphere in over a decade. It was a sanctuary - once a prison, now a place of healing. It was calm, peaceful, safe. It was home.
That was about to change.
A small, sleek, blue warship suddenly burst out of warp, cruising between the two moons towards the planet’s atmospheric field. It somewhat resembled a flattened airplane crossed with a hovercraft - a bridge, doubling as a cockpit, featured prominently at the front, with a squat, wide hull with two decks behind. Two engines roared at the back, pushing the craft onwards towards its destination.
This was a Coalescence-class attack corvette - a type of ship that typically belonged to Blue Diamond. It was bound for the watery planet.
It was a beautiful day on the island - it was warm, but not too warm, and a faint breeze blew over the beach. It was far too nice to stay inside, so Lapis and Stevonnie had headed out onto the sand, setting up an old, collapsible picnic table on the sand and getting out a board game.
“Six!”
Stevonnie moved their piece six places along the board.
“Alright, Chance!” they exclaimed, picking out a card, “Let’s see… advance to Illinois Avenue. Do you have that one?”
Lapis smirked and flashed the card.
“Dang,” muttered Stevonnie, handing her a small pile of the fake money, “Well, at least it wasn’t ‘go to jail’ again.”
“You mean ‘Ja.’”
Lapis pointed to the corner of the board. A sizable chunk was missing - the corner space now read ‘JA’ and displayed only two-thirds of a cartoon prison cell.
“Okay,” Stevonnie mused, scratching their chin, “I think I’m gonna buy a house on…”
“You know, I’ve been thinking.”
Stevonnie looked up. Lapis was staring quizzically out to sea.
“You know that one island?” she said, “The one over on the other side of the planet? You know, with that big cove and the cliffs…”
“Oh, with the caves?” replied Stevonnie, “And that underground lake?”
They’d found it about a year ago - at the time, it had been the furthest they’d been from home. The cove itself had been spectacular; protected from heavy winds by the surrounding circular cliffs, the spot was covered in planets of shapes and colours neither of them had ever imagined before. These weren’t green plants - they were blue and purple with streaks of a bright mango yellow and dark red, and some of them towered high above the largest trees on their own island. All of this had been brilliantly lit by the mid-morning sun, patched partially by the shadows of small clouds drifting by. When they had left, much later that day, the strange blue-green sunset had illuminated the cove in a soft, cool glow, contrasted brilliantly against the darkening sky.
Even more enchanting had been the caves. The walls within were smooth to the touch, and coloured in an vibrant spectrum of teals, sea greens and pale blues. It looked almost like a wave curling over them. The lake deep within those oceanic walls was crystal clear, like an enormous mirror, and lit by strange, pulsing fungi that lit the cavern up with a deep green colour. The sight, combined with the cool air, was enough to send a chill up Stevonnie’s spine. If they didn’t know it was water, they might have attempted to walk on it.
“Yeah,” nodded Lapis, “That place. I was thinking maybe we should go back there.”
“Sure,” shrugged Stevonnie, “There might’ve been something we missed around there, and…”
“No, I mean… just for fun,” replied Lapis, “To… camp.”
She shook her head.
“I mean, if you don’t want to, I…”
“No, that’d be great!” exclaimed Stevonnie, “We can make a campfire and sing camp songs and… well, we don’t have any marshmallows, but we could try using fruit instead…”
They trailed off. A strange, droning noise could be faintly heard on the wind - it seemed to be coming from above.
“What is that?” they asked.
“Stevonnie…”
Lapis pointed to the sky in a combination of awe and terror. A dark blue dot could be seen against the blue sky, slowly getting closer and closer.
“Captain! Lifeforms detected! One Lapis Lazuli and… wait, that can’t be right…”
“What can’t be right?”
“It’s… I can’t tell. I think it’s half human, but that’s impossible…”
“What? It can’t… take us in closer, I wanna see this.”
Lapis stepped back as she watched the blue ship approach. She was shaking all over - Stevonnie put a hand on her shoulder and squeezed it in an effort to calm her down.
“I-it’s an attack ship, I think,” Lapis stammered, “They-they used them to chase down criminals and stuff… but those only have ship-to-ship weapons, I think, they-they’d need to get out before…”
“So they can’t hurt us until they land,” nodded Stevonnie.
“No.”
Lapis’ expression hardened.
“But we can hurt them.”
She stepped forward, raising a hand.
A massive watery hand burst from the ocean, roaring upwards into the sky. It’s digits formed into a titanic fist, and with incredible speed and force it shot up towards the oncoming ship. Stevonnie swallowed - advanced or not, there was no way the ship would be able to weather such an attack undamaged.
“Lapis,” they said, “Maybe we should…”
Suddenly, as if crashing into an immovable object, the fist broke apart against thin air. Water sprayed across nothing, as if the ship was protected by an invisible bubble - then, useless spray came trickling back down to the sea, having done no damage to it’s quarry.
“Is that a shield?” gasped Stevonnie.
“They… they’re not supposed to have that!” exclaimed Lapis, “I mean, I don’t think they are - I haven’t seen one in thousands of years…”
She shook her head, clenching her fists in anxiety.
“We can still go,” she said, “We can fly away… maybe you can make a bubble or something, I…”
“Stay calm, Lapis,” replied Stevonnie, although they noticed their own voice shaking slightly, “Maybe we can hide - if worse comes to worse, we can ambush them when they don’t expect it, but maybe they’ll just check the beach and go away!”
“But what if we can’t…”
“I won’t let them hurt you, Lapis,” declared Stevonnie.
Lapis grit her teeth, closing her eyes. She told herself to calm down, to breathe - in, count to four, out, count to four, in, count to four, out…
She opened her eyes and looked Stevonnie in the eye.
“Well,” she said, “That… that makes two of us.”
Stevonnie grinned, and they doubled-back behind the treeline as the ship came in for landing.
“And we’re on the ground, but… uh, you sure you wanna go out there? That attack - no Era 2 could have pulled that off!”
“Yeah, I appreciate the concern, but I need to see who did this.”
“Uh… yes ma’am! Just… just be careful…”
“Ugh, I know what I’m doing…”
The ship had touched down. It wasn’t especially large compared to a Diamond’s ship, but it was still an imposing sight. It had deployed stilts upon landing, standing about two metres off the ground - it only served to make the ship look taller. It was at least twice the size of the barn, Lapis reckoned.
It began to hiss, and a panel moved on the underside of the hull. It shifted slightly, and then began to lower like a ramp. Absently, Lapis found herself reaching for Stevonnie’s hand - the fusion took it, and she immediately realised what she’d done. She bit her lip and focused her attention back on the ship.
The ramp finished lowering, the end gently ruffling the sand. There was another hiss - perhaps a door on the inside was opening up? Then came the sound of footsteps on a metal surface.
“They’re coming,” she whispered.
“Don’t worry,” Stevonnie whispered back, “It’s gonna be okay.”
The footsteps continued to approach, each step twisting something within Lapis into more and more twisted knots. A boot appeared, then another, until they could see a figure strolling down the ramp.
“No…” Lapis breathed, “It can’t be…”
The gem that emerged wore a long, grey, ankle-length coat with off-white gloves and a black trim along the sleeves. Underneath this was a white shirt that exposed part of her gem at the collar, and black shorts over white leggings. She wore large, grey boots with white stars on the heels, and her hair was done up into a ponytail. Her bangs covered her right eye. She was short and purple in colour.
“Oh my gosh…”
Stevonnie stood up, no longer caring to hide. Stars appeared in their eyes. The emerging gem’s eyes widened, and she froze in place.
“Stevonnie?” she gasped.
“A… Amethyst?”

Naviband - “Story of my life” 17th place
youtube
ALL ABOARD THE NAVI NAUTILUS!!! WITH A HEY HEY HEY AND A YA YA YA YA HO WE SAIL ON A OCEAN OF ADORABLE.
It was so poetic that the first two songs revealed for this mixed bag of a year were also one of the best and worst, respectively. It was more than “being better than Tako” that drew me to Naviband though. After the Pharrellapocalypse of 2013, I’ve become really picky w/r/t “Happyness Anthems” (”clap along if you feel like a room w/o a roof” a of all um what that doesn’t even make sense? b of all, stfu you suck!!!), still I was SWEPT by Xenia’s cutesy, adorable dance routine and the rest is HERSTORY (Q: is there anything about Naviband which isn’t cutesy and adorable? A: no)
Before I delve further into why I think Naviband are awesome, I’d like to point out some statements I’ve heard from... “haters”. Well not EXACTLY haters because I haven’t come across anyone who *dislikes* sitting through “Story of my life” (because lol how *can* you hate these earth angels, like swallowing with your eyes open or being attracted to Milan Stankovic, it’s physically impossible) but because Naviband are firmly positioned on the “Light” side of Ethnic Entry spectrum, they were OF COURSE greeted with the necessary contempt by Value Seekers:
“REALLY, IS “HAPPINESS” THEIR SELLING POINT? THAT’S SO SHALLOW”
“LOL THEY’LL NEED ALL THE RIGGING THEY CAN GET TO MAKE IT TO THE FINALE. HEY HEY HAYAYAYA HO HA HA HA HA”
“YEAH, THEY’RE FINE BUT NOT FINALE FINE :-/”
“THIS IS NOTHING SPECIAL, I’VE HEARD THIS BEFORE”
or as one Belgian newspaper article put it (translated as closely as I could)
“Riding the wave of “Hey Hey Hayaya Ho”, the Belarussians managed to steer their hovercraft into an iceberg of indifference”
Eh? I sort of get the general line of thought (honestly the above sentence is roughly how I would have written it had I agreed), but I don’t follow it at all. To me, it sounds like people are fabricating excuses to not like it. Debunk time.
1) Joy is not an inferior emotion. Yes, it’s arguably the simplest emotion on the spectrum, but given how *difficult* it is to be *truly* happy, I think shrugging it off as lesser or invaluable is classisist bullshit or the work of jealous bitter people.
2) “Story of my life” isn’t just about “happiness”. Happiness doesn’t just *happen* on its own and unless you’re, like, a living Pixar Character, there has to be a *reason* for feeling that way. Likewise, while Navi relied on their feelgood-vibe to carry them, the underlining story is that of the love between Artiom and Xenia themselves. They love each other so much, that the glow in each other’s eyes brightens their life’s stories. They sing this WHILE LOOKING EACH OTHER IN THE EYE. My heart MELTS like a wax candle at the sight of that. Two beautiful, pristine unicorns of human beings <3
3) “Story of my life” has more depth than it lets on. The translated lyrics show that “story of my life” has fairly poetic, if simple lyrics. Both the blessing and the curse of poetry is that you can take it at face value or analyze it deeply, depending on how you’re feeling at the moment. In other words, the person who decides how deep or valuable it truly is, is the reader themselves. (hence why “too shallow” reeks of elitism and politics and i never buy it as a reason to dislike this sort of entry). The message itself is straight-forward, but that’s only a good thing imo; makes it easier to establish a connection and melt the language barrier.
4) Emotions are always a hard sell and happiness is the hardest of all. Salvador *was* right in that pure emotion is incredibly important. However it can’t be stated enough that emotions can’t be force-fed down your throats. It has to come from the *heart*, pacemakered or not. Try to fake happiness for instance and you get this:
(GET OVER IT, Jacques, nobody bought it and all your votes were for the lolz only)
try to fake love and you achieve this:
(GET OVER IT, Alex, she will never sleep with you)
Meanwhile, Naviband take us on a magical hovercraft journey through their LYF, singing and dancing and Ha Ya Ya Yo-ing their way through all of its candyfloss-like nooks and crannies. It all feels so real and genuine because it *is* (lest we forget, Xenia & Artiom *are* an irl-couple and this *is* the love story of their *IRL* romance put to music.) Candyfloss is the best way to describe this entry, I think. It’s colourful, sweet and festive, if simple. Naviband never pretended to be anything other than what they are (two upbeat people who love each other) and I find that a charming quality.
5) Simplicity is generally a good thing, especially if you sing in your own language. You have three minutes to convince a live audience you’re the best of 26. if you’re singing in NotEnglish, this can be a challenge, so you’re best left using your strengths and not overtly complicate shit. Naviband succeeded, hence why they didn’t too bad. (I don’t think anyone would argue with this? That we’re going to Lisbon next year and not Turin just proves this as an uncontested fact, tbh.)
In other words, anyone who still doesn’t appreciate Naviband after reading this... our universes are so divergent, they’ll simply never ever align on this plane or the next one. (but thanks for reading anyway ^__^)
Even with all of that, we’re still at the tip of the Iceberg? Both live performances are littered with little, cute moments that I’ve tried to gif and some which I couldn’t, such as this crazed Lithuanian frump from the semifinal who was sooooo into it:
Spirit animal/totem of love/child of the moon/ruler of the sun, etc.
In conclusion, what a fantastic ending to a true underdog arc. Navi had to sit through a really difficult semifinal with no allies, snobistic eurofans who tried to paint them with the Basic Brush and you know, the usual stigma of being from BELARUS, but still scraped through the finale (Ukraine handing them a free 24 points <3) because of their unfiltered goodness, to finish in a respectable THIRTEENTH place with the audience from slot #03, which is generally one the weaker starting positions. They placed ahead of ARTSVIK and DEMY lmfao <3 They may not have won this ranking, but they have WON hearts!! Hey! Hey! Hayayahoooooo~

How Donald Trump Would Attack Iran: Amphibious Landings?
The Marine Corps trains for a broad spectrum of operations, from pilot and aircraft personnel recovery to full-scale amphibious and airmobile assaults. One of the greatest truisms of life is that land wars in Asia are futile. The continent’s vastness allows defenders to trade space for time, extending the logistical lifelines of invaders to the breaking point. This argument holds for Iran, which at a population of one quarter that of the United States and the size of the West Coast is too large for even the largest of modern armies to occupy. But what about an amphibious raid against select targets on Iran’s coastline? Military action against the Islamic Republic is by no means imminent or even on the horizon, but it’s important for the public to understand the tools the Pentagon—and the White House—believe they have in their toolboxes. As The National Interest noted last week, Iran has a sprawling coastline. At 1,550 miles, Iran’s southern coastline is longer than that of California, Oregon and Washington combined. While such a long sea border is useful for projecting power into the narrow Persian Gulf, it is also a double-edged sword. The downside is that Iran has 1,550 miles of coastline it must defend from a highly capable amphibious force such as the U.S. Marine Corps.(This first appeared in July 2019.)The Marine Corps trains for a broad spectrum of operations, from pilot and aircraft personnel recovery to full-scale amphibious and airmobile assaults. One type of operation the service specializes in is the amphibious raid: using a small landing force to capture an objective, occupy it for a short period for a specific purpose, and then evacuate back to the sea.If tensions with Iran continue to heat up, one option would be to stage an amphibious raid against a land or sea-based Iranian military facility. Iran has a large number of military facilities along its coastline belonging both to the Iranian Navy and the naval arm of the Revolutionary Guards. The Navy typically operates east of the Strait of Hormuz, while the Revolutionary Guards operate west of the Strait and generally across the Persian Gulf. The Iranian Navy operates larger, more capable ships, while the Revolutionary Guards Naval Forces tend to operate smaller watercraft, along the lines of civilian speed boats armed with heavy infantry weapons. An amphibious raid would be targeted against an island, oil platform or coastal facility with a military purpose. Ideally, the target would be one directly responsible for some provocation, such as the laying of sea mines, capturing Western naval personnel, or staging small boat attacks. The Revolutionary Guards have historically been more willing to instigate incidents with Western navies at sea, making a Guards base a more likely target. The United States could also choose to deliberately target the more belligerent Revolutionary Guards over the more reserved Iranian Navy, in order to humiliate them and weaken them politically.A raid would involve the deployment of an Amphibious Ready Group of amphibious assault ships and their destroyer escorts backed by at least one carrier strike group. Each ARG travels with a Marine Corps infantry battalion and the air and amphibious assets to get them ashore, plus attached armor, artillery, communications, medical, and supply. Overall, the raiding force could well consist of over 16,000 American Marines and sailors. The operation would kick off with the neutralization of local enemy air defenses. Tomahawk cruise missiles would destroy fixed air defenses and command and control centers that might organize a counterattack, while the five-inch guns of the destroyers sailing with the ARG could strike the objective itself. Lately, the Marines have been experimenting with launching Guided Multiple Launch System (GMLS, or Gimler) rockets from the flight decks of amphibious ships, essentially giving the Corps an organic shipboard precision guided weapon. U.S. Navy F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, F-35C, and Marine Corps F-35B fighters could also strike targets at a distance, using the new Stormbreaker all-weather glide bomb.Once the objective is softened up by missile, artillery and air strikes it is time to launch the raid itself. A Marine Expeditionary Unit can assault a target by air with the MV-22 Osprey and CH-53E Sea Stallion, with AH-1Z attack helicopters in support. By sea, Marines would land by amphibious assault vehicle, LCAC hovercraft, and LCU landing craft, bringing with them artillery, armored vehicles, and in some cases a small number of Abrams tanks. Over the course of several hours a MEU could put a thousand Marines on the objective. After a predetermined amount of time, the raiding force would withdraw to the ships of the ARG.An amphibious raid would be a very dangerous operation, with Marines exposed to air defense weapons, anti-ship weapons, artillery, and infantry close combat. Casualties, whether by enemy fire or the fog of war, would be a certainty. Landing on and seizing, if only temporarily, Iranian territory would be highly escalatory by nature. There is nothing Iran has done at this point, or in the last thirty years, that would warrant such an operation. That having been said, it is a useful option in the event Iran escalates and a major military operation is considered. As belligerent and posturing as Iran is, its armed forces are under-equipped and would find themselves stretched thin if seriously challenged from the sea. Even the threat of an amphibious raid could force the Iranians to rush to defend their extremely long coastline, an expensive and time-consuming proposition that would preoccupy Iran from making mischief elsewhere. In the end, the mere threat of an amphibious raid may do the United States more good, deterring Iran from an action that would warrant such a complex operation, than a raid itself.Kyle Mizokami is a writer based in San Francisco who has appeared in The Diplomat, Foreign Policy, War is Boring and The Daily Beast. Video Game Treatment for Kids with Autism, ADHD Suggests Efficacy
From Benjamin Yerys, PhD
A pilot study has found that a video game designed to treat autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and co-occurring attention/deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is acceptable to kids and parents and feasible. While not statistically significant, investigators did report an improvement in measures of attention for children who played with the multi-tasking game.
The game, Project Evo, has been previously studied in children with ADHD, but without co-occurring ASD. Investigators led by Benjamin Yerys, PhD, a child psychologist at the Center for Autism Research at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, wanted to test the digital medicine tool with this unique population of children with both diagnoses.
“How feasible is it to use a digital treatment for kids with autism?” asked Yerys in an interview with MD Magazine®. “There are very few such treatments that are out there—there are none that are FDA-approved.”
The question is particularly important because typical medications for ADHD, including methylphenidate, guanfacine, and atomoxetine, aren’t as successful at treating children with autism in addition to ADHD, Yerys added.
The Project Evo game requires children to multi-task by switching between a memory-based task and a visuomotor task. The first requires players to tap the screen to choose a target from a few options, for example, a blue fish as the target with red and yellow fish as distractions, according to the paper. The second task consists of steering a hovercraft along a river. The game’s difficulty increases as the child progresses.
The educational game that children in the control group were given tasked them with generating ever-longer words from a pool of letters.
Children assigned to either group demonstrated high engagement with the games, indicating feasibility of the treatment. Acceptability was measured by questions answered by children and their parents. Most children believed the games improved their attention (72.7% of multi- tasking group answered “yes” or “unsure,” as did 62.5% of educational group). Parents responded that they would want their child to continue playing with the game after the study (90.9% of the multi-tasking group said “yes” or “maybe,” as did 62.5% of the educational group).
Despite the study’s small sample size—just 19 children—the CHOP team also measured promising trends in attention scores for the patients assigned to the multi-tasking game compared to those in the control group.
“While it is extremely early, we did see things moving in the direction that has been seen in other studies,” said Yerys. “The performance on the measure of attention of sustained attention seemed to be in the direction of improving for kids in the active treatment group versus the kids in the control treatment group.”
The multi-tasking treatment group showed non-significant improvement as measured by the Attention Performance Index (API) score from the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA), while the educational group showed non-significant losses on the API from TOVA. The multi-tasking group had a positive effect size (Hedges’ g = .72; 95% CI, − 2.68 – .98; P = .12) about twice that of the educational group’s negative effect (Hedges’ g = -.35; 95% CI, − 1.73, 3.08; P = .55).
“This treatment may be doing what we think it’s doing, which is to improve a certain aspect of cognitive function which can help reduce the negative effects of ADHD,” said Yerys, though he emphasized that with just 11 children participating in the active treatment group these results are not statistically significant.
The research team made minor modifications to the Project Evo game to better suit children with autism as well as ADHD. The study included a pilot phase a week before beginning where the children had access to the games and shared feedback with the investigators.
“One of the most critical things that we changed was in the learning rate,” said Yerys. “That learning rate is a critical piece because you want it to improve fast enough that the game is a challenge, because if the treatment isn’t a challenge, then it’s not actually pushing the system that they want to push with that treatment.”
Yerys indicated that the team is currently pursuing federal funding to continue this research.
“Based on the promising study results, we look forward to continuing to evaluate the potential for Project: Evo as a new treatment option for children with ASD and ADHD,” Yerys said in a statement.
The paper, “Brief Report: Pilot Study of a Novel Interactive Digital Treatment to Improve Cognitive Control in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Co-occurring ADHD Symptoms” was published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

China’s Marine Corps is getting bigger and stronger
A reorganization and expansion brings the program from 20,000 to 100,000 Marines.
www.top81.cn
PLANMC
Chinese Marines, seen in this February 2014 photo at winter training in Inner Mongolia, are traditionally a lightly mechanized elite infantry force. China's recent expansion move, however, will likely coincide with a shift toward more heavy weaponry and missions in intensive conventional warfare.
The People's Liberation Army Navy Marine Corps is in the midst of a massive reorganization and build out that will greatly enhance China's ability to project power abroad.
Chinese Ministry of Defense
Swimming Tank
The ZTD-05, the light tank variant of the ZBD-05 armored vehicle, has a 105mm cannon in a wielded turret to provide fire support against enemy armor when storming beaches. The ZDB-05 and ZTD-05 can extend the hydroplane, as seen in the picture, from the lower front hull. These vehicles can also go over 15 miles per hour, making these the fastest amphibious armored vehicles in the world.
At the center of the plan multiplying the relatively small force five times—from about 20,000 uniformed personnel to potentially over 100,000 Marines. This force increase is largely accomplished through folding up to eight PLA amphibious brigades, which were Army units responsible for amphibious missions, into the PLANMC order of battle. This expansion will make the PLANMC more of a full spectrum expeditionary force like the Marine Corps in the United States. Historically, China's Marine Corps was an elite light infantry formation akin to the British Royal Marines.
Let's take a look at what the PLANMC has right now, and the heavy equipment it could soon gain:
Chinese Internet
Beach Tank
This ZTZ-96A main battle tank, the lighter of China's modern tanks, is deploying from a landing craft. Specialized amphibious brigades and divisions in the PLA Ground Force (Army) have heavy weaponry and train for amphibious assault; it is likely that the PLANMC may be transferred some of the Army's mechanized amphibious units.
The heavy hitters of the PLANMC are likely to be the ZTZ-96 (pictured above) main battle tank (which has equipped PLA forces) and the ZBD-05 infantry fighting vehicles (IFV). The ZBD-05 is the only fast amphibious IFV in the world, carrying eight infantry and three crew at speeds of over 15 miles per hour in the water and 40 miles per hour on land. It achieves its high speed by hydroplaning (using flat surfaces to reduce hydrological drag).
=GT via China Defense Forum
PLZ-05
The PLZ-05 howitzer is one of the best heavy artillery cannons in China and the world; it's 155mm cannon can fire extended range WS-35 shells up to 100km away.
For long range fire support needs, the PLANMC can count on the 122mm PLZ-07 and 155mm PLZ-05 self propelled howitzers (pictured above). The lighter PLZ-07 can fire 50-pound shells to a range of about 17 miles, making it a perfect fit for organic brigade artillery, while the larger PLZ-05 can fire special ammunition with a range of about 62 miles.
Chinese Navy
3325
Zubr hovercraft, number 3325, blasts onto a beach during Chinese naval exercises. As one of the world's most heavily armed and largest hovercraft, it can lift three tanks or a full infantry company straight into battle, relying on its speed and heavy weaponry of 30mm Gatling cannons and rockets to make forcible entry against enemy opposition.
While hovercraft for rapid amphibious landings will continue to be controlled by the PLAN proper, the massive Zubr and Yuyi landing craft air cushion (LCACs) will be a key part of PLANMC landing capabilities. Buoyed by massive air cushions, the LCACs can rush in at speeds of over 70 miles per hour onto land, rapidly landing heavy armor and Marines to storm defenses and hold the beaches for reinforcements. The Russian origin Zubr can carry 145 tons of cargo, and is armed with 30mm Gatling cannons and 140mm rocket artillery. The Yuyi LCAC, while smaller (a 60-ton payload), can be launched from the well decks of the Type 071 landing platform dock, which are the premiere amphibious warfare ships for the PLANMC.
CCTV 7
Naval Z-10
Chinese Army pilots and their Z-10 attack helicopters train regularly with PLANMC and PLA amphibious forces to give them close air support. With the PLANMC's force structure's rapid increases, China's Marines could soon fly their own attack helicopters.
While the PLANMC currently has no aircraft, there exists the strong possibility that Chinese Marines will field its own organic aviation attack assets, as opposed to relying on PLA and PLAN helicopters. Army Z-10 attack helicopters are already operating from landing ships in support of Chinese amphibious exercises. The Z-10's battery of guided anti-tank missiles and chain cannon make it a useful system for both supporting amphibious and inland combat, as well as operations against lightly defended enemy shipping.

HQ-17
The short range HQ-17 SAM, derived from a Russian design, can keep up with armored formations (and deploy during amphibious operations) at the regimental level to defend against enemy aircraft, drones and cruise missiles.
In air defense roles the PLANMC could use HQ-17 SAM tracked launchers for frontline air defense. The HQ-17, a Chinese modified variant of the Russian TOR short range SAM, uses high tech radars to guide 7-mile-range missiles against hostile aircraft, drones, and missiles.

A Ship Full of Hovercrafts
The Yuyi Type 726 hovercraft, each capable of carrying a tank or several smaller armored vehicles, is China's primary conveyance for transporting vehicles, infantry, and supplies from the well decks of amphibious warships to the shore. The increase in PLANMC numbers will likely see more Chinese hovercraft built for expeditionary purposes.
The expansion and reorganization of China's Marine force is another key aspect of China building up the traditional tools of global power. Akin to the role that U.S. Marines play, they can be stationed at home, potentially based abroad (such as in a future at ports like Gwadar, Pakistan or Dijibouti, to secure Chinese trade routes), or aboard PLAN ships. Focus on the maritime will enhance China's ability to carry out amphibious landings as well as deploy light expeditionary forces. A force with the motto of "Tiger of the land, dragon of the sea" is taking a big step forward.
