Set 6231 Speeda Demon VF downUpgrade - 40 pieces
A little guy appears! This is the smallest of the upgraded Villains and that's because I suck at building Technic, I will give him a bike at some point. He is very mad about getting shrunk.

Here's Speeda Demon and his nitro rocket bike in all their glory! It was kind of tricky figuring out the torso build for him but, I feel this is best I could do. I'm still proud of how it came out, it just feels like there's something missing from it. The first thing I had to get figured out was the scaling. I was really worried that he was gonna be way too big for the bike since the frame of the bike is the original but, I think I got it right. Speeda Demon was one of my favorite sets alongside rotor growing up. Well, a favorite I never owned. Anyways, enjoy!

Secret Mission #1:The Doom Box Review
Tumblr media
(Spoilers ahead)
I bought this book in early 2013, just a few months after the BREAKOUT wave had ended. At the time I was sorely disappointed that Core Hunter had not made the cut into the television episode and was relieved to see that Hero Factory actually had plans for him. An entire book dedicated to his capture, in fact!
The Doom Box features three chapters dedicated to previous encounters Bulk, Stormer, and Stringer have had with the mercenary, with Stringer ultimately being the arresting officer who caught him in the first place. While Bulk’s is probably the weakest, all three scenarios paint Core Hunter as the notorious and competent mercenary that the fandom considered him to be.
As such, I have nothing but praise for Greg’s representation of Core Hunter. Throughout the book he emerges from shadows and orchestrates grand schemes, bringing with him a tangible gravitas as a higher class of mercenary, leagues ahead of the bumbling henchbots who entirely deplete their ammunition firing on disarmed Heroes. While the circumstances of his capture remain painfully ironic, it brings me much joy to see him consistently outsmart the Heroes and escape capture. In this department, The Doom Box truly excels, standing as a cohesive testament to the best parts of Greg’s writing style.
As the Heroes close in around their target, it also becomes clear that Surge is the main protagonist of the story. While I would have preferred Bulk to capture his quarry and to see one of the veteran Heroes get the glory, Greg really justifies his creative license here. In a style reminiscent of Ordeal of Fire, Surge demonstrates a notable degree heroism that once again outshines that of his teammates, dealing the final blow that overloads Core Hunter’s highly-unstable, galaxy-destroying superweapon and seemingly kills the bounty hunter. In the end, I feel sympathy for Surge’s struggle and recognize the triumph he has achieved to an extent.
However, commendable though it may be, Surge’s brand of heroism simultaneously serves as one of the few weaknesses I can detect in the narrative. While he consistently blunders his way through the book starting uncharacteristically-angsty arguments with Bulk and failing to follow procedure that unrealistically lands his teammates in trouble, Surge’s resistance to the temptations of the dark side falls somewhat short for this reviewer. Brought up only in the climax, this narrative thread is a tad forced, coming a little out of left field and just barely rounding off the story. I am reminded of Vakama’s brief flirtation with evil in the 2005 story arc and wonder, perhaps, if Surge here acts as a surrogate for Matau and the moral decay that Greg wanted to explore.
Unfortunately, the timeline of this event remains out of sync with the BREAKOUT television episodes, meaning that Speeda Demon and Voltix remain at large, alongside Thornraxx, XT4, and Core Hunter.
Similarly, Nex and Evo barely feature in the story, with their roles relegated to tech support from the Mission Control center. This is somewhat disappointing to me, though it makes sense to keep Alpha Team’s two greenest rookies well away from Core Hunter.
On a lighter note, there are several instances of dialogue being especially memorable. Many of the best one-liners are delegated between Stringer, and Stormer, though Breez and Rocka also emerge with one or two comebacks that would make any fan-fiction writer envious.
Some absolutely fantastic space-age imagery in Stringer’s flashback story. While the premise of his chapter situated aboard an abandoned freighter with an unknown alien lifeform lurking in the darkness feels appropriately reminiscent of Metroid, the encounter itself leaving me with a new-found fondness for Stringer. I finished the chapter wanting to rebuild his 1.0 form again and appreciating him that much more, which is a win in every conceivable capacity.
Breez, Furno, and Surge continue to walk that fine line between competence and naivety that they have since 2010 while Rocka ventures off on his own direction to interrogate Splitface. There are some instances in this book where I’m glad to see Bulk treating Breez as a partner or Stormer taking the metaphorical training wheels off of Furno. Since LEGO remained somewhat unclear as to whether or not the three Heroes had matured to Elite status, I feel this bold move was of Farshtey’s own design.
Overall, there is no doubt in my mind that The Doom Box does more than simply supplement the narrative of the Hero Factory television show – it provides a sense of scope for the line’s intended trajectory whilst presenting what is arguably the most ambitious villain Alpha Team have ever faced. Emerging from a year where the television episodes premiered before the second wave of sets, it is especially satisfying to look back on after constraction lines themselves have been all but discontinued, knowing that this book remains an untapped resource of canon content. LEGO commissioning these books at all was a very intimate gesture, especially when one considers the company’s later trend of letting sporadic television episodes and associated online/mobile games carry their lines for the entire year.
Since The Doom Box is only a partial character study into the mercenary lifestyle of fan-favorite, Core Hunter, it dedicates a significant portion of its content towards developing Surge and restoring both Bulk and Stringer in the eyes of the reader after two consecutive waves of the veterans either being sidelined or downplayed. While not particularly ambitious in the grand scheme of Hero Factory expanded canon, The Doom Box ticks all the boxes that a fan can dare ask for.
Tremendously faithful to the diegesis of the Hero Factory universe and offering a comprehensive, multifaceted insight into the darker realms of expanded canon that Core Hunter has the freedom to inhabit, I thoroughly recommend picking up this book.
