Here’s my day 7 outfit of the Spring 10x10, which I wore this morning to get brunch to celebrate our 7th anniversary. And then to browse around a record store and buy some anniversary vinyl (which is I thing I made up but would now like to honor on every anniversary).
Now i’m off to the pottery lab, though, so nice clothes have to go because I’m mixing glazes for the first time today and I just know I will get them all over my shoes. In between I’ve been doing some Feminist Security Studies reading for one of my final projects. Some days grad school is full of stuff I don’t want to do, but today it is full of the things I’m 100% interested in, and that feels really nice.

Spring 10x10 outfit recap
Here are my 10 looks from my Spring 10x10 challenge! Here are the 10 pieces I started with, and here’s my breakdown (with links) of each outfit. Now, for some loosey-goosey thoughts...
Overall, I had a lot of fun during this #spring10x10, and the best part was following everyone else’s outfits on Instagram and getting inspired. It wasn’t too challenging, namely because I chose to keep outerwear as “accessories.” I will definitely use that trick again, because it worked out so well to feel liberated in that sense. The challenge made me try some different things (like tying shirts in knots), but I ultimately was content to repeat certain items more that I had initially planned. It was nice to see that sense of contentment coming through, and I especially appreciated my low heels and blue button-up as if they were shiny new pieces. I am definitely ready to start wearing some different pants, though.
My accessories stayed pretty minimal, and shifted ever so slightly from those I had thought I would grab originally. I loved having 3 pairs of shoes, because I think it really helps shoes stay comfortable when you’re not repeat-wearing them every day. Laundry was easy, except for a little lack of planning on my part. Despite this recent purchase, I was out of appropriate underpants by day 4, and because I also got a chocolate stain on my white jeans early in the challenge, I had to do an “emergency” load early on. But all my tops were totally fine to wear multiple times before washing.
When I do 10x10s, I like to look at the list as a whole and judge whether it would make a good packing list. Here, I think there’s some potential, with a few key changes. I would probably swap a pair of shoes for a third pair of pants, and would have to add a piece a outerwear that works with everything.
Outfit 1: Even though a white button-up seems to be something that goes with everything, I was really struggling with how to style it in a way that didn’t feel too uptight, so that’s why I included it here in my 10x10--I knew it would force me to try things. I started off by a) doing a recent go-to I love, white-on-white and b) keeping it super relaxed with a front-tuck, scrunched sleeves, and an open neck. Tucking my sunnies into my collar when I wasn’t wearing them also helped me feel like the shirt was staying “in place.”
Outfit 2: I sometimes wish that I had gone nude or brown with my low heels, but on days like this, when the color palette is super soft, I’m so glad I picked black. It feels a bit more fashion-y to have that high contrast. When I first bought this top, my husband encouraged me to pick this blush color, rather than white or gray or black, and I’m glad I did. It’s so pale that it’s nearly a neutral, so it’s a “gateway” to color for people who are afraid of color haha. I tried something weird with my shirt here, tucking it at front and back, but letting it drape at the sides a bit. It creates a nice waistline shape without feeling too constraining. I often feel tight in silk tops even if they’re billowy, because they don’t have much give, so this was a real lightbulb moment.
Outfit 3: A bit of gray + white, warmed up with my tan bag. I really like all these pieces together, especially with a blue denim jacket, but I’m not feeling the full tuck on my shirt. It makes the sleeves feel out of proportion, and it’s a bit too bulky in the back. How do we feel about the length on these jeans? They’re frayed, so I could easily cut some length off, but I’m a bit nervous I’ll go too far. I experimented with rolling them in some of my later outfits.
Outfit 4: I love t-shirts, and this might be the best one I own. It’s almost perplexing how soft and thin it is, given that it’s a more substantial weight than most. As far as this outfit goes, I’m little worried it got too sailor costume-y. I was originally planning to wear my black bandana, but swapped it out for a white one I got as a wedding favor, thinking it might be more subtle. I think is almost works, but in the future, I might nix the bandana altogether and let this be more minimal.
Outfit 5: Because I wore my jacket on most of the day before, I repeated the same tee here. Hopefully no one at work noticed! Isn’t the stigma attached to repeating funny? I didn’t need to wash it between wears, but I still felt weird wearing it again right away. Anyway. The hat is because I needed to wash my hair, and it was likely to be a pretty relaxed day at work, so I leaned into it. I didn’t roll my sleeves here, but I probably should have.
Outfit 6: I got a little gussied up for date night and stole this jacket from my “formal capsule.” It’s old from Steven Alan, and I got it for a steal on eBay--it’s the perfect jacket for ordering martinis, which I did. I also tried something new with my top, tying my shirttails in a knot. It took me a couple tries to get right, and I ultimately had to move the knot down to just the last bottom button to nail the proportions. It looks a little smashed here under the jacket, and tucking might have been better, but it actually was something I’d try again if wearing the shirt alone. Check it out without the jacket on my instagram.
Outfit 7: I originally had more variety planned for my 10 outfits, but this top-bottom combo just felt right to repeat. I was off to a BBQ with friends, and I love how the Birks give it a much more casual vibe. I kept the shirt big and floaty with a front-tuck. This shirt was one of my biggest “splurges,” even at a huge eBay discount, and it’s been so worth it. It might be one of my favorite shirts ever. And this is probably my favorite outfit of the whole experiment.
Outfit 8: Are you sick of these pants yet? Don’t worry, this is my last wear of them in the challenge. I just wanted to try another something different with the white button-up. I tied it up in a knot, and I think I like it, but not for work. It might work better on the weekend--it just kind of gives me vacation vibes.
Outfit 9: My favorite shirt gets a 3rd repeat, this time with double-rolled sleeves, and a full-tuck. I felt self conscious about how polished this looked, so I ended up pulling the back-tuck out when I got to work, but now I wonder if I should have stuck with it. The jeans are distressed, so I guess it’s not that polished. I really like this color combo of blue, pink, and white--makes me feel very Haley Boyd. I also liked trying this bandana as a neckerchief, inspired by Stephanie.
Outfit 10: I repeated the same color combo from yesterday in a new way, and I like the results. One of the reasons this silk top doesn’t get a lot of wear is because sometimes I think it’s too fancy for everyday, but paired with Converse, it has a new, very chill life. I full tucked my shirt, because a few Insta friends encouraged me to try it again after yesterday.

Look 10/10: "In like a lamb, out like a lion." 😕 #spring10x10 🖤 It's nearly freezing right now and will be cold for the next handful, so you can expect that I'll be wearing some version of this #arenitepants + #stratatop top + jean jacket + warm accessories for the upcoming week. ❄ In other news, my youngest two are heading to the (cold) beach with my husband and his parents for five nights. I'll miss them something crazy, but it means that I'll have my eldest to myself for the first time in since he was 21 months old! I'm planning some long hikes, art museum vistits ... you know, the things you can't really do in the company of a four year-old! Those of you with older kids - what are some of your favorite mama/kid dates? ✨💖

Day 9: this is what I planned on wearing today, except I got the kids’ cold and of course I feel WAAAAAAAAY worse than they seem to, so I’ll be in track pants all day, please and thank you. . Hope you’re enjoying your Saturday. I’m about to let Moana work some magic while I lay on the couch only half alive and when Maui sings “You’re Welcome,” it’ll be to me. . . . #spring10x10 #ES10x10 #10x10friends #stylebee10x10 #springwardrobe #capsulewardobe #capsulewardrobechallenge #springcapsule #springcapsulewardrobe #springoutfit #10x10challenge

I’ve always enjoyed keeping my feed a mixture of business and personal. There are several reasons for this, but the biggest one is because I like to show the person behind the art! It’s so easy with Instagram to forget that everyone is living a real life with problems and feelings and other interests, and I want there to always be a clear person and voice behind the squares. In that vein, after some deliberation, I’ve decided to join the #spring10x10 challenge! Sustainable style and having a small and intentional wardrobe is really important to me, so I knew I would enjoy this challenge! I honestly thought it would be easy for me because my entire wardrobe is already under 40 items for the whole year. However, I had a surprisingly hard time choosing my 10 pieces! Feel free to follow along in my stories for my picks and daily outfits! https://ift.tt/2GrC9Dh www.estherclark.co

Summer 10x10
It’s that time again! After lots of hemming and hawing (don’t worry, I have all kinds of little sayings like that--my husband loves to make fun of me for them) I decided to do this challenge.
I was hesitating because these next two weeks are my last in the place I have called home for the last 5 years. I’m going to miss Madison like crazy! And, I felt like I wanted to have all my favorite options to wear to all my favorite spots in my city for the last time.
Isn’t that strange how we tie clothes to really making the most of an experience? I decided it was really silly to obsess about having full access to my closet for the next two weeks, and that paring down my closet might actually help my stress level as we pack up our lives here (literally and figuratively).
I also need the 10x10 challenge.
Whenever I have a lot of stress in my life, I go to shopping as a way to distract + soothe myself. It’s not something I’m proud of, but it’s been a long-standing part of my personality. It’s the way I watched women in my life cope as I grew up (my mom and nana are big shoppers) and so I come by it naturally. But it’s something I’ve been working to change. My hubs is a saver and I’m a spender, so we’ve worked on ways I can enjoy this “hobby” of mine and we can meet our financial goals as well. Lately, I’ve found shopping in terms of specific pieces works well for me. We usually agree on 5 pieces/season (~3 months) and that has helped me to weigh which things I like more.
But lately I’ve been off track.
I had to do a shopping freeze for most of spring as we saved money for our big move. However, when June rolled around--I went nuts. I dealt with all my stress by browsing, purchasing, and having “new” outfits to wear. Plus, June is my birthday month and I get all kinds of coupons and promos and I wanted to be sure to use them! I also got birthday money so I felt I could spend. The thing I haven’t learned so well is that even with a coupon, you’re still spending.
I’m fairly happy with the purchases I made, but there are a few things that were definitely “fun” purchases and won’t be closet workhorses.
I’m disappointed in myself, but I also recognize that this journey to be more “minimalist,” resourceful, sustainable with my closet, whatever you want to call it, isn’t a straight path. There are curves, lessons, and room to grow.
One thing I’m proud of with my purchases is that I went for natural fabrics only. I’ve noticed that even in my fast-fashion days, that the clothes I love + last are ones that are made out of 100% natural fibers (cotton, linen, tencel, silk). So when I was looking for things in June, I set myself the rule of only natural fabrics.
However, I have also realized that once I turn the shopping habit back on, it is really hard to turn it off. Enter the 10x10 challenge.
One thing driving my shopping was a realization that my summer wardrobe doesn’t fit the rest of my style. I had a lot of “easy” casual tanks, tees, and 3″ shorts, but I noticed I wanted to feel more put together, even though I work from home or coffee shops in the summer.
In June I did a big closet re-haul (in part to make room for some of the things I had purchased). I realized I have a more flirty, girly style in summer, but still want structural, minimalist pieces in there to balance that style out.

(proof of my overhaul--love seeing all those empty hangers!)
All that being said (#bachelorettelanguage), my goals for the 10x10 are:
1) Figure out my summer style uniform. (I’m working on a post about uniforms and why I think they’re useful--stay tuned!)
2) Stave off my shopping appetite.
3) Focus on/try out the pieces I think are key to summer style.
After stressing about what to include all weekend, I realized that the point of this exercise was fun + making dressing easier and stress free. So I’m bending the rules *a little*.
I figured out with the #spring10x10 that I am happier when I have my full shoe selection. I’m pretty choosy about my shoes--They’re one area of my wardrobe where I’ve put to work the idea of quality over quantity. I only have a few go-to pairs per season anyway.
I have ten clothing items and then I’m limiting myself to two pairs of shoes.

The items are:
*long-sleeve chambray
*striped cotton jumpsuit
*power of my people linen button down (this has been a closet hero all summer)
*zara cropped embroidered short sleeve cotton top
*old navy chambray dress
*j.crew linen skirt
*loft seersucker skirt
*formation design co. linen shorts (the only pair I’ve been wearing other than my cut-offs)
*j.crew cotton tank top
*loft black basic tee

(proof I wear my shoes a lot! Check out the wear on those birks!)
Stay tuned! I’ll post a recap on how it goes + what I learn. Early lesson: I had a hard time picking 10 things, which means I have a lot I like in summer wardrobe already!

Taking my "Frauline Maria" up a notch for look 9/10 of the #spring10x10 ! 😆 I may or may not have landed upon a completely acceptable Halloween costume ... and I may or may not remove my kerchief for the rest of the day. The hills are ALIVE, in any case, and I'm singin'. 😉🎶 Wearing: #gypsumskirt over a #hinterlanddress, both patterns coming soonish.
