Oh this drawing! I wanted to customize my blog and that’s genuinely the only reason I drew it. I threw a bunch of my favorite animatronic ocs on it at the time and called it a day. This one took a while from what I remember but I had a great time regardless.
Sorry I haven’t been real active, I’ve had some major art block lately. But I finally finished this and now I have a decent header image lol

Rugged Prairie (Eventide No. 178, Illus. Fred Fields)
One of the more fascinating aspects of the plane Lorwyn/Shadowmoor is it's size. In the official material, it is portrayed as a rather small world in contrast to bigger planes like Dominaria (which is canonically around 1.5 times the size of Earth). All the important locations that are mentioned on cards and in the story are a few days from each other on foot (or at least on springjack/cervin, I guess), making it feel like it's roughly the size of a big-ish county, or maybe Wales if you want to be generous.
However, paradoxically, despite being relatively small in size, Lorwyn/Shadowmoor also never really ends. The plane is surrounded by a mountain range, which is literally endless, going on and on no matter how far one travels. The specifics are never explained, but it can be assumed that behind the barrier between the physical and the metaphysical (represented by the mountains) lies the Primal Beyond, the place where all things come from.
I've already speculated in earlier entries about the origins of creatures like selkies, angels, or noggles on Shadowmoor. The hobgoblins are another group of creatures that fall under this category. They don't seem to be transformed versions of Lorwyn's boggarts. They lack the horns and more animalistic elements and are much too human-like for that. Plus, despite not all that much time passing after the Great Aurora in the official story, the cards show hobgoblins as having an established society, with agriculture and what appears to be some kind of loose military system.
In reality, this discrepancy is probably due to disconnects in the creative process. Certain card art is already commissioned by the time the story teams starts figuring out the details of the plot, other teams are not communicating with each other, etc. This still happens in more recent sets (Golden Demise, Inspiring Overseer), and can be a bit frustrating from a Vorthos perspective. But it's also kind of interesting how real-world processes lead to the creation of these "liminal spaces" in the lore and worldbuilding, where elements or plot beats exist and don't exist at the same time, or seem to contradict each other. Often, it's not possible to reconcile the contradicting elements ... but for Shadowmoor, it might be possible to work them into the setting.
To me, Rugged Prairie shows a liminal space in a twofold sense. It's liminal in the traditional, anthropological sense - a space where the dead are lead to rest and are expected to pass on into the afterlife (those cairns in the art are hobgoblin graves, as explained in the flavor text). And then, it may also be a liminal space in the in-universe physical sense: Existing on the edge between the real and the not-yet-real in the world on Shadowmoor, as a pocket of land close to the endless mountain range. Maybe the hobgoblins (and selkies, noggles, etc.) came from there, having emerged from the Great Beyond maybe even before Lorwyn turned into Shadowmoor.

Krenko’s Guide to Creature Types: Goat

Art by Forrest Imel
What is a Goat (flavorfully)?
A goat’s a goat. Magic doesn’t do anything special with its goats. Sure there’s a few that are big or scary or have multiple heads, but they’re goats. And while Magic does have a few goat-people, they have creature type Minotaur rather than Goat.
What is a Goat (mechanically)?
Goat mechanical identity is… odd. There are ten Goat cards spanning three colors and there’s no rhyme or reason to any of it. Their abilities are a hodgepodge, their power and toughness range from 1 to 4, and no ability shows up on more than two goats. Goat cards have no identity… Buuuuut…
There are six cards that make 0/1 White Goat tokens, plus one un-card that does the same, and when most Magic players think of Goat cards, these are the cards they think of. With 6 of the 16 cards that provide Goats giving 0/1 Goat tokens, it’s clear that this is the Goat’s mechanical identity, for the most part.

Can I make a Goat deck?
Let’s split this into two questions.
“Can I make a deck that relies on playing Goat creatures and uses Goat tribal synergy to win the game?”
No. Not possible in any format. The actual Goat cards have no synergy and aren’t good enough overall. There’s only one Goat reward, a land that can put +1/+1 counters on a Goat you control each turn, and while that’s fine, it’s not enough.
“Can I make a deck that wins the game with goats?”
Yes, and the only Goat-based cards you need are Springjack Shepherd and Springjack Pasture. The Shepherd provides you with 0/1 Goat tokens equal to your devotion to white, and the Pasture lets you eat those Goats for life and mana. Either throw down some team buff like Nobilis of War (which provides 5 devotion to help you build your goats), or sacrifice all your goats for Fireball or Elesh Norn or Ulamog or whatever. The important point here is that Springjack Shepherd is a very good card that will give you more goats than playing a deck with nothing but Goat cards can even manage.

Is Goat a good creature type?
Uuuuuuuuuugh.
I respect and love the 0/1 Goat token. I do. It’s great and funny and has lots of uses, but there’s no good reason Goats should be a separate creature type from other caprines and bovids, especially sheep. Now, I’m a firm believer that the entire Ungulate branch would be best off being one creature type- not including whales and dolphins- but especially goat, sheep, and serows. Especially especially Serows which have creature type Antelope and while commonly called a ‘goat-antelope’ is closer in relation to the goat than the antelope.
So here’s my basic proposition for this: All sheep should be Goat. Serows should be Goat. Because the subfamily IS Goat. If you divide any further, Goat and Mountain Goat are no longer the same creature. If you divide any less, well, then we hit bovids, which I would love and would make the game so much better mechanically. And as I think I’ve said before, if you think people won’t grok Bovid, make it something like “Creature - Herd” because we all understand the concept of a Herd animal, and the term Herd primarily applies to Ungulates.
Fun Fact: I’ve been playing this great (but rarely updating) game called War of Omens, and they use the word “Herd” to lump together their Goats, Boars, and Aurochs. So, yeah. Do that.

Do you have any OCs? If you do, tell us about them
I HAVE SO MANY, My favorite OCs rn is my springjack demons, one is a young boy in victorian times, who was corrupted by his nanny, and has lived til today, and hunts down evildoers (jeff bezos mainly) with his strength, speed and heat vision (also his ability to summon his gloves, which corrupt people into low level demons, way below a springjack), The other demin is the nanny, who is the 1st springjack, and has lived for longer than hell has, and originates from a far off dimension, like a super-hell, but i call it Poly-Gehenna, and the nanny herself is the hive queen of lost gods that have been shattered and formed into the irises of every living thing (which is why springjacks don't have irises)

Flavours of the Multiverse II : Gild-Leaf Salad
This week we are imagining ourselfs as Leilwynn the Lorwyn elf! Leilwynn just got the order to prepare the main course of a banquet in the Gild-Leaf Palace.

Wilt-Leaf Liege art by Jason Chan
First you need to venture deep into the forest to grab some kinds of mushrooms, but be aware not to disturb the treefolk or they become angry!

Bosk Banneret art by Ralph Horsley
If you avoided the treefolk start gathering wild herbs on the plains near the kithkin parishes, but remember thos ugly halflings could blind you if you look to long at them, elves are the most beatiful denizens of the world after all!

Springjack Knight art by Steven Belledin
And if you are already near a Kithkin settlement you should claim some cherry tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers for your recipe.
The last ingredient is also quite easy just sneak into the Gilt-Leaf Palaces pantry and steal some elfish bread! Wait? There are guards everywhere!

Gilt-Leaf Palace art by Christopher Moeller

Flourishing Defences art by Dan Scott
The Recipe
Gild- Leaf Salad ( Wild Leaf Salad)
500g / 1 pound of Wild Herbs ( you can either get them as an already mixed prepacked box or you can choose the one you like)
250g / 1/2 pound of mixed mushrooms
1-2 Spring onions
( 1 Paprika in each color they would not fit on lorwyn but taste great so they are no must)
1 carrot
10 cherry tomatoes
1 cucumber
2-4 toasts
Start with washing your herbs and put them aside for latter. Now we first concentrate on the croutons.
Dice the toasts and spread them evenly on a baking tray and drizzle some oil of your choice over it for example olive oil.
Put the try into the oven at 150 Celsius / 302 Fahrenheit until they are crispy.
While backing the croutons you can slice the cucumber, cut the cherry tomatoes into halves and grate the carrot (also dice the paprika if you want to use it).
Wash the mushrooms and cut the spring onions into small slices. Heat a pan with some oil and put the spring onions and mushrooms in it. While they fry put the herbs on plates and garnish it with your vegetables. put the mushrooms on your salad and the croutons on top and you are ready to dine like an elf!

Did you like the cersion with more progress pictures or should i just post the finished dish like this week? please let me know!
And as i said before this is dedicated to one of my absolute favourites on tumblr @flavoracle
