I Have
————————
I have bathed in
Tranquil turquoise waters
felt the power of a wave
against my chest
-
I have felt
The warmth of summer breeze
against my skin
and the chill of winter wind
on my face
-
I drank from a cool spring
On a hot summer day
And tasted a snowflake
on my tongue
-
I have embraced the sun
at dawns first light
and felt it burn
with mid days heat
and in the evenings
implored it
to stay a little longer
-
I have loved the moon
It shows me
the deepest darkness
at edge of the land of dreams
-
I have marveled at the heavens
and the billions of stars
that guide me
-
I have felt the love
Of a beautiful woman
The joy hearing
the word Dad
From the mouths of my children
-
I have lived
I have loved
I have been loved
And for that
I am grateful

This Day in History: Battle of Green Spring
On this day in 1781, the Battle of Green Spring is fought. Technically, the battle was a British victory. Strategically, it was anything but! The British might have won the field, but they squandered an opportunity to squash American forces in Virginia. That failure would set up the British to lose the all-important Battle of Yorktown. British General Charles Cornwallis was then in Virginia, moving his army from Williamsburg to Portsmouth. He planned to cross the James River near Green Spring Plantation. The Marquis de Lafayette was also in the area, leading Patriot forces. He didn’t have enough men to take on Cornwallis’s entire army, but he planned to attack the British rear guard after the main army was already across the river. If only he’d known that Cornwallis was on to him. Cornwallis intended to set a trap. The story continues here: https://www.taraross.com/post/tdih-green-spring

Ramnivas Laddad - Developing Declarative Backends.
Ramnivas Laddad is a technologist, author, and presenter who is passionate about doing software right.
Ramnivas has been leading innovation in Spring Framework and Cloud Foundry since their beginning. He has led a group in Cloud Foundry and started the Spring Cloud project. He is the author of AspectJ in Action (1st ed, 2nd ed), the best-selling book on aspect-oriented programming that has been lauded by industry experts for its presentation of practical and innovative approach to solve real-world problems. He has at many leading industry events including JavaOne, ScalaDays, JavaPolis, No Fluff Just Stuff, SpringOne, and O'Reilly OSCON.
In your work with technology, what is the task, situation, setup when you’re the happiest and in the flow?
I work in two roles: an architect (whatever that means!) and a developer.
For the architect role, nothing beats a whiteboard, markers in many colors, and an eraser. It is nice to be able to explain (often to myself) the system composition. A whiteboard affords an easier way to get your head around a complex system and to refactor it until it makes sense. So even in my home office, I have a large whiteboard.
For the developer role, tests are really important to me. Once I have a failing test, it challenges me to keep going. The process of writing tests also often reveals flaws in the interfaces, makes code easier to understand, raises the level of abstraction, and gives me something to lean on as I refactor the system. Resistance to writing tests often comes from the sheer amount of code needed to write good reproducible tests. So I spend a significant effort creating support code to make writing tests easier. Tests also help me overcome procrastination. Sometimes at the end of the day, I may write a test that I know will fail. Then the next day, I know exactly where to start!
What was the most positive thing you realized, or that just happened to you, during the pandemic?
I started to take meditation seriously. I have been practicing meditation on and off for a while, but with the pandemic, it became important to do it regularly to keep me sane. By taking a step back and tuning in to the “here and now”, I have reduced stress significantly.
I also started to learn music more seriously. I have always loved music (especially Indian Classical) and even have a startup around it (https://learnraga.com (https://learnraga.com/); my co-founder and I have presented at Scale By the Bay about it). It was ironic that despite all this love, my practice was at best spotty and as a result, I wasn’t making any real progress. A few months into the pandemic, I decided to practice for at least 20 minutes a day. So far, I have managed to not miss even a single day (thanks LearnRaga for the accompaniment and pitch accuracy feedback!). Many times I can’t find time until late at night and by that time I am really tired. But since I committed myself, I end up practicing and almost always feel energized once again!
And I got a new puppy: Iroh. I was never a dog (or for that matter any animal) person, but with Iroh all that changed!
Which person, in tech or anywhere, gives you the most inspiration?
So many people have inspired, mentored, and made me a better person, it is impossible to point to a single person.
As a whole, the open-source community inspired me a lot. While many successful projects lead their developers to fame (and sometimes fortune), there are many unsung heroes who produce high-quality projects simply because that is what they are passionate about. I am also inspired by bloggers who write deep articles to help understand the nuances of software systems. Thank you!
How much time do you spend on your setup that you need to do actual work? What are the things that you cannot do without in your environment?
Multiple monitors, a good keyboard, a comfortable chair, and good speakers/headset to allow me to tune in.
Which other SBTB 2021 talks do you want to attend? Which ones look like complementing yours well?
So many!
These days I use Rust as my main programming language (besides Scala), so I will be attending the talk “Single-Serving Values with Linear Types in Scala” by James Douglas. Rust has been my introduction to linear/affine types. They are very powerful and take some time to get used to. In Rust, the main purpose they serve is to ensure single ownership and thus memory management. Of course, they can be used to ensure a stronger type system by effectively encoding a state machine. For example, you can enforce--at compile time--rules such as “cannot call read on a closed file”.
Due to the availability of GC, the first kind of use is not so important in Scala, so I think the focus of the talk will be the type-safety aspect.
I am looking forward to “Distributed Systems with Swift” by Konrad Malawski. I have been interested in Swift since it kind of sits between Rust and other high-level languages such as Scala. So in this talk, I hope to learn the server-side usage of Swift especially in the context of distributed systems.
The “Relational Databases: Don't call it a comeback!” by “Rob Hedgpeth” looks interesting and relevant to my talk. Relational databases have come a long way and knowledge of their true power can dramatically simplify application code.
Should we stay online, go all-in for in-person, or do a hybrid setup next year? Which one do you personally prefer?
I guess the virus gets to decide this :-(. If the conditions allow, I would prefer in-person. Nothing beats meeting new people face to face.
We are happy to invite you to the 9th conference Scale By the Bay!
