I’ve just finished reading ‘Beyond the Bright Sea’ by Lauren Wolk and what a beautiful book it was. Set in the 1920’s on the Elizabeth Islands in America a baby is found ashore with a letter, a ruby ring and a birthmark in the shape of a feather. She is found by a man who is just as lost as she is, whom she ends up calling Osh and he naming her Crow. He makes a life and home for them on a tiny island and they become each other’s family. But the mystery of her beginnings start to haunt Crow whilst growing up. On the nearby island of Penikese - a now deserted island with only birds as inhabitants, there used to live a colony of people who were suffering from leprosy. It had always been hinted at by the townsfolk that Crow had links to that island and was kept at a distance in fear by many people (that is apart from Osh, their neighbour Miss Maggie and their cat named Mouse.) But after the ache of wanting to know about her past gets too much she sets off to find exactly where she came from and to whom she belonged to. But there is more danger and mystery found than she had first expected. I’ve read both Lauren Wolk’s books and both have a simple quietness to them but with quite complex mysteries at their heart. Although they are children’s books they strike me as more of an adults book that are about children. Absolutely wonderful, lyrical, thought provoking and unique though. And she definitely writes (for me anyway) with the hint of Harper Lee about her. I learnt about a time and place that I hadn’t read about before which I really enjoyed too. It's spring mud season here in the Tetons. So, I did what anyone would-- took walk with a friend and her dog, got coffee and read aloud from a Sunday New York Times from 2 weeks ago.

This story stood out to me.  A woman with a passion for bullfighting? Demanding for her right to be gored by bull horns? A true bad ass indeed-- take a gander and let me know what you think. I was happy to come across this gender-role-defying woman and I think you will too...
