The other big place for NFTs is the gaming industry. I’m not a gamer except for words with friends and candy crush type games lmao, but holy shit gamers spend a LOT of money! So since I’m not a gamer I’m just going back to the Sims example because it’s one I understand. So atm heaps of games have you constantly buying stuff to advance in an endless story and it’s like ‘if you want to fight this dragon you need one of these swords that you need to buy additionally’ or ‘you need more land to expand your castle’ or ‘you have to have a special piece of clothing to complete this task’ — I consider these to be like expansion packs for the sims lol. Well some games would release something like an outfit but only have it available for a limited time. So people bought this limited time outfit, but then when they advanced in the game they eventually had no use for that outfit anymore, but other players did - so they sold them to the newer players. The original gamers had money to spend on new shit in the game and the new gamers had the cool outfit they missed out on and everyone was happy. Then people realised some gamers REALLY wanted that special outfit and they sold it for twice the price, because new gamers were prepared to pay that much. It’s like it all the sim expansion packs sold out in store and the only way to get them was going on eBay, only by the time they got to eBay, the game was 10x as popular and 10x as many people wanted the expansion pack, so the sellers could make a fair profit selling them again.

The gaming tech keeps getting bigger and moving at a fast rate so another popular NFT to buy atm is in game land. The idea behind owning land in the game is a lot like land in real life, it depends on the location and the stuff around it as to how much it could be worth. So let’s say to play a game you have to cross a field, if you buy the digital space that field fits on, you can charge a tax for people to cross it. Games already do this, and it’s usually a coin of the in game currency; the currency isn’t worth anything outside of the game, but you can use “real” money to buy more of the game currency to advance further faster. The way games are going, the thought is that you could convert the in game currency to real world money. Maybe it’ll be bitcoin or some other form of crypto, but if tech people can do what they want to where you can swap game coins for a real life coin - people will make a LOT of money by owning digital land. I was reading about it and actually thought it sounded good, but most plots of digital land in places that are expected to make a profit are starting at SIXTY THOUSAND USD 💀 $60,000 USD. I thought it’d be like $20 lol.

There are also some people who talk about “digital real estate” as if it will replace real world real estate because cost of housing is too much, so they expect us to sit in a one bedroom apartment and then put on our virtual reality headset and enter our mansion — that we have to pay a lot of real money for ??? — and invite friends over to our virtual homes while we sit on the couch of our actual home, but I can’t see that idea taking off.

You can buy a whole lot of other NFTs that will be able to be used in games - like costumes, add ons (weapons, special powers etc) and scenery, which again can be traded from one gamer to another, or rented / taxed that could see it profitable, but my current understanding is that it’s like buying bricks for a house before you have land to build on — the NFTs are the bricks and the tech is the land — cause atm we can’t do everything I’ve mentioned, but tech developers are working towards making it real, which could happen in six months or six years etc.

But yeah I did a lot of research into it cause I thought maybe there was a possibility of making money selling digital art as NFTs instead of via red bubble designs lol. There is, but there’s a lot of work to get started and build hype to be successful at it.

Sorry for not posting the last few months. COVID is still killing any opportunities to have fun. Still stuck at home. Still not out playing the field. I’m never gonna live that one down, am I :D Okay, let’s go.

He always says it, and Lawrence always shrugs. It’s almost becomean in-joke now.

The prompt was “You don’t have to stay”, and I have no idea why my mind conjured the image of Spy (at the end of a long, eventful life) in a hospital bed saying this to Sniper. But once it took hold it wouldn’t let go. And, y’know, for all that I love writing humour, banter, and/or fluff, sometimes I just have to let rip with the brutal down-to-earth feels. Like when I wrote If.

Of the two of them, it’s hard to say who hates hospitals the most,so Philippe is always grateful when Lawrence comes to visit. Usuallyhe comes alone, but sometimes one of his grandnephews or nieces comeswith him, Lizzie’s and Christian’s kids and grandkids, of course! and the conversation is livelier and dwells less on thepast, which is just as well. Their past is splattered with litres andlitres of blood, half of it their own.

Spy is French and, I suspect, remains French in certain aspects of his life. Hence the using “litres” instead of “galleons”. Also, while the premise of TF2 is “a bunch of cheerful dumb psychos who can’t die killing each other for a paycheck” - classic video game fare, and goofy as hell - the implications are interesting. By “implications” I mean “possible PTSD” and by “interesting” I mean “fun to explore through writing/torturing characters”, naturally.

Does killing people for a living make you a murderer when said deadpeople keep coming back for more the very next day? Philippe haspondered this more often than not, these past few years. Sometimes,instead of asking himself, he asks Lawrence, because he’s the onlyone left he can ask, but Lawrence has no answer of his own.

See what I mean about the premise? Hence my taking crack seriously. It’s a reasonably good question, too - it makes you an assassin, but does it make you a murderer if you know the people you keep killing keep coming back?

(They’re not the last ones left, but it certainly feels like it.Scout’s in Boston and Miss Pauling lives in Louisiana and theyhardly see each other any more. Sometimes they Skype. Ever sincePhilippe checked into the hospital he’s refused to do anything morethan chat, though.)

TF2 is set in the 1960s/early 1970s. That means this snippet is set in the late 2000s/early 2010s. Notice how Scout and Pauling are the youngest? This is why they’re the only ones left. And the reason why Spy doesn’t want to Skype since he’s checked into the hospital is because he’s wasting away, knows he’s not coming out alive, and refuses to appear as weak/leave a bad impression of him in their memories. Or, how vanity can make you sad instead of making you want to roll your eyes. (but you do anyway.)

Don’t tell me Jane Doe would understand military time :D was he even in the military in the first place? Also, this is just funny to me, because in France we use a version of that to tell the time. 1PM is “13 heures”, 8PM is “20 heures” (but midnight is “minuit”).

Philippe still uses the metric system in his head, come to think ofit.

As I said, for some things he remains 100% French.

When it comes to plunging your knife into someone’s back with theintention of causing as much damage as possible, a centimetre willalways be more precise than an inch.

He brings him news of his nephews and nieces (Lizzie’s andChristian’s kids) and their children, and it’s a treat, watchinghim awkwardly sliding the photos on his phones with his huge, bonyfingers. He loves technology – has a ridiculous amount of apps onhis phone – but the emphasis on touch screens lately annoys him.

I didn’t want to go the obvious route and make old!Lawrence a grumpy curmudgeon with no technological skills. But I liked the idea of him being grumpy because his fingers are getting a little stiff with age and he prefers buttons to touch screens. My dad is the same, btw.

Philippe hasn’t touched his own phone in a couple of days. Justpicking it up seemed like too much of an effort.

Hey, notice how the last time this sentence pops up it’s just a little different? :3

“Keep that up, spook, and I’ll end up believin’ I’minterrupting something each time I come in. Is it that red-hairednurse, ya know, the one with the freckles?”

I purposely didn’t specify the gender of the nurse. That’s because 1) I like the idea of Phil being bi and 2) at the time I wasn’t 100% sure - and didn’t want to decide for the readers, Chaos in particular - whether he and Law were a couple or really close friends. That’s for you to decide. They 100% are each other’s family, though.

Lawrence’s voice is low on purpose, even as he’s gently ribbinghim. Philippe murmurs because his chest feels like a slab ofconcrete.

Or a slab of stone. Like the kind they put on people’s graves.

What can I say? I love wordplay. In this instance it’s effective.

“No.”

“Ah well. Thought he liked ya. I was all ready to get jealous andeverythin’, too.”

He’s ribbing him, of course, as Phil is a little too far gone for Lawrence to get jealous - but again, I deliberately kept the nature of their relationship vague.

Lawrence’s slight smile – the sort that says ‘Come on, playalong’ – is warm and gentle, and it makes Philippe almost not saywhat he means to say.

Almost.

Okay, truth: this was the point I knew death was imminent. 

“Lawrence…”

Even whispering is an effort. Putain de cigarettes.

“Fucking cigarettes”. I usually put translations when I write in other languages but I thought this one was obvious enough.

There’s a French series called Lazy Company, about a handful of idiots through the Battle of Normandy; it’s three seasons of 10 episodes and while hilarious is a big case of Cerebus Syndrome and mood whiplash. In one of the last episodes, one of the main characters is shot and another character is there for them, but the dying character asks them to look away as he dies. It’s not for the same reasons at all, but it was such a powerful moment that it stayed with me a long time, and was still on my mind when I wrote this.

Lawrence says nothing, but his eyes narrow.

“It’s just… I need… intimacy.” Suddenly he’s not sureit’s the right word. He’s been speaking almost exclusivelyEnglish for over fifty or sixty years; words usually flow withoutthinking. But right now he has thrown his whole body into the laststruggle, and it’s an effort that dwarfs all others, including thesearch for vocabulary.

Do you know the worst part of being bilingual? You end up searching for words in both languages, especially when you’re tired. Incidentally, I love writing characters who speak more than one language, especially if they live in an environment where they have to speak a second language.

Lawrence still squints at him silently, as though he’s waiting foran explanation. Philippe isn’t sure he’ll hear the end.

“T—thank you. For staying. Thank you. But…”

They’ve dealt death so many times, the two of them; they’ve diedso many times, too, whether in the heat and chaos of battle or curledup on themselves, bleeding to death in a corner. They’ve never diedalone. There’s always been someone – the enemy standing overthem, allies running towards them in a last ditch attempt at rescue,their comrades’ and the Administrator’s voice in their earpieces…

Again, crack taken seriously. Usually in fiction, dying alone is about the worst fate a dying character can meet: there’s just something about facing that pain and that terrifying unknown without the comfort of a fellow human being that’s heartbreaking. But when your life used to be death, repeatedly, with someone ALWAYS watching you or listening to you… Well, I thought Phil might see dying without someone else’s eyes on him for once as going out with dignity.

And then there is the other sort of death that Philippe saw wellbefore that, the slow death of the human mind as he strugglednot to turn into a living shadow because it was just one step awayfrom the corpses the SS guards cleared off the ground as though theywere refuse.

Look, Em, I don’t know when you got the idea that Spy was a death camp survivor, but you pulled it off magnificently and when I think of TF2 it’s your version that comes to my mind first. So - Phil has seen that kind of impersonal, industrial death (mental and physical) before the violent, repeated kind of his chosen profession. I used the reminder to segue into the next idea:

Philippe has never seen death as being dignified and intimate. He’sseen way too much of it for that. But if this is to be the end, he’llbe damned if he doesn’t do this on his own terms.

And that’s what this is about. Dying with dignity, side by side with a friend who doesn’t think any less of you for not fighting one more minute and allows you the respect of not prying while staying and holding your hand.

Lawrence stares at him, waiting for the rest of the sentence. ButPhilippe is struggling for breath now, not vocabulary. So Lawrencenods slowly, takes his limp, emaciated hand in his own, big andgangly and calloused, and resolutely turns his head right, towardsthe window.

It’s not a bad sight.

I’m usually pretty uptight about third-person limited PoVs, and only switch PoVs after a dash or something else that makes it clear you’re seeing the action through the eyes of a different character. In this instance, though, I didn’t, and made the switch from Phil’s to Law’s mind just as Phil passes away.

Philippe’s hand twitches at some point. Lawrence waits a littlebefore looking down again.

Then he reaches out and slowly, gently, closes the half-open eyes.

The reason I didn’t write tears was because I thought I didn’t need to. Which also means you’re free to imagine whatever you want. Is Lawrence crying? Will he cry later, when it sinks in? Yes.

"But you're leading us to a high school?" Roger pushed, looking at the guitarist through the rearview mirror, eyebrow raised.

"It doesn't matter. Just keep driving, we're going to be late." Brian huffed

"Late for what?" Deacy enquired, adjusting himself in his seat.

"You'll find out."Brian retorted, before leaning forward and barking another direction to Roger.

You sighed, tapping your pen against your cheek, watching the clock intently, despite the fact that it was broken. Your teacher droned on and on about how to find the gradient of a line on a velocity-time graph. It was tedious and your table partner, Adam, was really starting to piss you off. He was constantly harassing you both in and out of lessons. Making fun of your curly hair, the way you dressed out of school, even the way you walked. Adam also teased you relentlessly for being a 'nerd' as he so called it.

An elbow to your side pulled you from your daydream. Your head snapped over to Adam who had a malicious smile on his face.

"Knock it off, Adam. I'm too tired for this, you wanker."` You whispered trying not to distract your teacher.

"I don't care." He shrugged with a smirk. You rolled your eyes, shaking your head, causing your curls to bounce sharply. You turned your gaze back to the work in front of you, noting down your teacher's words. After a few minutes, you quickly grew restless again, discreetly pulling your phone from your pocket. A text lit up on your screen from your mother.

'Going to be late from work, you'll have to walk home. Sorry, sweetheart. XXX' It read. You huffed, glancing at the time on your phone. The bell signalling the end of the day was about to ring and you could already spy kids packing away, so you followed suit. You plugged your headphones in just as the bell went and you shoved them over your ears, throwing your bag onto your back as you walked out of the cramped classroom. You growled as a girl shoved past you, desperate to get outside. That's all this school was, push, shove, fight. You quickly pressed play on your music and the soft guitaring of '39 rolled into your ears. Someone smacked into your arm as you exited the building and you rolled your eyes

Brian was messing with his rings, bouncing on his heels. His bandmates were looking at him strangely as they waited. They were stood outside a school, hoods and sunglasses hiding their features.

"Why are we standing in front of a school?" Roger asked, eyeing his friend strangely as he brought his cigarette back to his lips.

"You're not some sort of pedophile, right darling?" Freddie joked, causing the group to laugh, but Brian just shot them a  glare. Suddenly, a swarm of children came bursting from the building, some walking to the bus, some wandering off down the street and others shoving past the boys. Teachers followed closely behind, watching the students for a while before a few trailed back inside. Deacy, Freddie and Roger were expecting a teacher to come over to Brian. So when a girl with insanely curling hair that bounced with every step she took, came running over to the group, they grew very confused.

"Bri!" You exclaimed as you spotted a figure you hadn't seen for months. You almost ran into another student as you sprinted to your older brother, jumping up to wrap your arms around his neck. Brian returned the hug, instantly wrapping his long arms tightly around your waist.

"I can't believe you're here! I thought you were still on tour?" You asked, excitedly. You'd always been close with your older brother, despite the fairly large age difference. You had been his number one supported for years.

"I came to surprise you, love." Brian grinned down at you before lifting you up and spinning you. You laughed loudly, yelping to be put down.

"Oh, we came to see (Y/N)" Roger stated, a tone of realization in his voice. You'd met Roger a few times when you went to visit Bri in university. You'd met Tim too, but the Smile days were long over. It was a new reign for Queen.

"What other kid do I know, other than (Y/N) and her friends, Rog?" Brian shot back sarcastically, pulling away from the hug, but keeping an arm around your side, keeping you close to his body. You gently smacked Bri's arm before forcing yourself out of your brother's grip to hug the drummer.

"It's good to see you, Rog, it's been too long." You smiled before pulling back, shoving your headphones so they sat around your neck.

"Yeah, four years is a long time. You've grown a lot" Rog chuckled and kissed your temple quickly.

"Well,  I hope I've grown a lot, considering that I was eleven last time you saw me." You laughed quietly. You were slightly taller than Roger, copying your brother with the tall trait.

"Brian, are you planning to introduce us?" Deacy interrupted awkwardly, shuffling towards the three slowly.

"Oh shit, of course. (Y/N), this is John and Freddie. John's our-"He began

"Your bassist and Freddie's your lead singer. I do pay attention when we skype." You cut him off, with a smile.

"Right, sorry. Fred, Deacy, this is (Y/N), my little sister." He finished, wrapping an arm around your shoulder as you extended an arm. Deacy shook it politely, giving you a small smile.

"It's nice to meet you, (Y/N)," Deacy said, before shuffling back, allowing Freddie to waltz over.

"I didn't know Bri had a sister." Freddie declared but shook your hand with a grin. You couldn't help but grin back. He had that kind of aura around him that made you want to copy him.

"He doesn't talk about me all that much. Wants to keep me out of the public eye as much as possible while I'm still young." You explained before Brian could even open his mouth.

"Don't people notice your last name in school?" Roger questioned, curiously, letting out a mouthful of smoke as he spoke.

"Legally, she has to have May as her last name on her registers and such, but the school agreed to call her a different name when we got famous," Brian answered, casually resting an elbow on your shoulder. You weren't too much shorter than your brother, but just short enough to tease you through simple gestures.

"As far as other students are concerned, I'm (Y/N) Robertson." You added with a small laugh. Deacy snorted slightly.

"Surprised people haven't suspected you as Bri's sister what with the hair, height and jawline." Deacy laughed and you joined in, giggling.

"OI boys, look! It's the nerd!" A voice beckoned from behind you. You rolled your eyes, not even dignifying Adam's comment with a response.

"C'mon guys, let's go." You sighed and began walking. Brian could tell you didn't want to start a scene so he followed you, ignoring the anger he felt running through him. The band followed swiftly, continuing to chat with you as you fell into a line across the street, no longer charging ahead

"Hey, bitch! I'm talking to you!" Adam yelled before you felt a harsh pull on your hair, causing you to jerk back sharply. Your neck made a loud crack, which caused an instant discomfort ( though you knew nothing was damaged).

"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" Roger hissed, instantly grabbing Adam's wrist and forcing him to let go of your hair.

"Don't touch me, you fucking nonce!" Adam snapped.

"Then don't touch her," Freddie growled, moving to stand behind you, next to Brian, who was towering over Adam and his friend completely

"It's none of your business dude, just piss off." Adam's friend, Mike, tried.

"Just leave me alone, guys. You're not funny, and you're not as scary as you think you are. Twats." You added, folding your arms as you muttered the last bit under your breath.

"Hey, Mike, do you think these are some dudes she's fucking?" Adam commented and you narrowed your eyes, feeling all the boys around you tense.

"Probably, she always has been a slut," Mike replied with a harsh laugh. That's when Brian stepped in.

"Listen here, kid. I don't know who the fuck you think you are but you have no goddamn right to speak to her like that. She's a better person than you two will ever be. So just fuck off before we make you." Brian stated, voice dangerously low. The two boys exchanged glances, before deciding they were outnumbered. They were muttering expletives under their breath as they scuttled away. You let out a long breath, finally allowing yourself to relax. Brian was practically shaking in anger.

"What kind of dickhead's go to your school?" Deacy suddenly asked and you smiled, allowing a chuckle to escape your throat.

"A lot of them" You responded, running a hand through your hair, though it got tangled in your curls.

"How about we go for dinner after you get changed, darling?" Freddie suggested, noticing how on edge Brian and Roger were. Honestly, he was furious too, despite only knowing you for about five minutes, but he hid it slightly better. Besides, they'd known you longer and were closer, it was only understandable that they were mad

"Sounds great, Freddie. C'mon Bri, Rog." You answered, taking the two boys hands in yours. They both seemed to relax slightly and allowed you to pull them behind you and Freddie as Deacy led you back to Roger's car.

Laughed echoed through the mostly empty diner, tears nearly falling from your eyes at Freddie's story.

"And then he locked himself in a cupboard to get his song on the album." Freddie finished and Roger shot him a glare, though there was a soft smile on his lips.

"Roger, I knew you were immature but really?" You said and Roger flipped you off playfully. The three boys fell into conversation and you began talking with Brian.

"How did your physics exam go? Did the tutoring help at all? I know it was harder because it was all on skype and video calls." Brian asked between bites of food

"It helped tons Bri. I went from a D to a B+." You grinned and Brian smiled.

"That's amazing! I'm so proud of you. How's YOUR band?" He had put his fork down, reaching for the milkshake you were sharing.

"There's a little friction between our guitarist, Hunter, and our singer Josh but other than that, it's going well. Doing small gigs at under 18 clubs and stuff like that. It's fun." You answered, stealing one of his fries.

"Why is there friction?" He raised an eyebrow. You were very aware of the fact that Brian's bandmates were listening now, but you'd stopped caring.

"Hunter wants to sing more even though he said in the first place that he didn't want to sing. He's saying it's unfair that I and Josh are getting the solos, even though we're both lead singers. And Hunter is being a bit of a dick, saying I can't play my instrument because I'm a girl. I think he's jealous that I can play his instrument better than him and it's not even what I play in the band." You ranted.

"Well, what do you play?" Roger asked.

"Drums in the band, but I sometimes do guitar, and I sing in the band too." You mumbled. Roger smiled, a look of, what you could only describe as, pride filling his features.

"You sing, dear?" Freddie enquired.

"Yeah, I do. It's hard when you're playing drums." You laughed.

"You can say that again," Roger muttered

"So, (Y/N), we were talking in the house earlier and we were wondering if.." Brian began, trailed off just to annoy you. Your raised an eyebrow.

"If what?" You commented

"Your summer break is coming up, and our American tour starts the week after your break begins and ends a few days before school begins again. So, if you wanted to, we were wondering if you'd like the come on tour with us? See America?" Bri finished and you gawked at him and the boys.

"Are you being serious?" You choked out.

"Yep! I already asked mum if it was okay. So it's completely up to you." he smiled.

"Of course!! Why wouldn't I come?" You exclaimed, climbing from your seat to hug each of the boys.

"I've no idea, darling," Freddie answered as you got to him, causing the table to break out into laughter once more.

Have a culture that everyone has to observe. For instance, tech-free dinner times, strict times for sleeping, making beds when kids wake up, being polite to strangers, taking dirty dishes to the sink among others. Each kid will grow up with a sense of responsibility.

Read with them/for them

Find time to read with your kids before they sleep. Let them read out loud and correct them when they err. Do not be fast to correct frequently though. Let them know they are doing just great. Read to them books that interest them. Occasionally, sit with them as they watch cartoons on TV.

It might seem intrusive to their privacy, but it’s worth it. There are all manners and sorts of abuse and bullying online these days. There is no need to let your children become victims of something you can control. Place limitations and filters on what they can watch online.

Be the boss in the homestead

Children need to look up to someone who has some semblance of authority. Be that person. Let them come to you when they have issues, grievances or concerns because they believe that you will resolve them perfectly and fairly. Be firm with your judgments and punishments but be fair as well.

Do not quarrel in front of your children

Parents quarrel all the time- we are human beings after all. However, try to avoid quarreling in front of your kids as this may have negative implications for their future.

Learn about what your kids love and surprise them now and them

Surprise your kids with stuff they love now and then. This brings them closer to you and keeps them in anticipation of the next surprise.

It’s Ok to fail sometimes

Do not be too hard on yourself. And do not beat yourself too much when things do not seem to go the way you expect with your kids. Fail, learn and try again.
