So I read Tatooine Ghost, by Troy Denning. Like most of the later Legends canon, I wasn't greatly enthused overall, but there was nothing terrible, and there were a number of good points to make it worth my time.  

Anyway, the Macguffin is a famous Alderaanian moss painting with a hidden Rebel spycode in it, that used to hang in Leia's bedroom when she was a child, and now it's re-surfaced at a less-than-legal Tatooine art auction. ART ART ART. I love art heists. I love the moss painting, it's such a cool idea. I love the details with Alderaanian worldbuilding.

Sadly, the art heist is only there for the first third of the book and then we veer to other things before we come back to it at the end, where it feels like an afterthought. The rest of the book is spent chasing people around Tatooine and Leia coming to terms with her heritage. I love Leia having a relationship with Shmi's recorded diary and Beru's sister, even if it is a little too--convenient- for my tastes. It's interesting watching her struggle between her experiences with Vader and their memories of Anakin Skywalker. Sadly, Anakin's ghost is a no-show, which could have been really fun.

Like Allegiance and Choices of One, the book features canon and Zahn OC characters almost-but-not-quite-meeting as they chase each other around (instead of Luke and Mara, it's Han and Leia vs. everyone's favorite red-eyed Imperial Grand Admiral), which feels odd to me. It seems appropriate that it's Thrawn the Art Admiral who is after the painting, though.

This book attempts to bridge the gap between The Courtship of Princess Leia and the Thrawn books, which is fun. Han is rightfully pissed at the NR goverment for trying to marry Leia off to Isolder and Leia is distressed that she didn't figure out some other way to get an alliance with the Hapans BEFORE it interfered with her personal life. It also explains why they decided to have children - i.e., how Leia got over her fear of her children following in Vader's footsteps.

This book is ALSO an attempt to reconcile the pre-prequel Legends canon with the prequels and it sorta-kinda-works - or would, if I was invested in the prequel's version of young!Anakin, which I am not, but that's not really the author's fault. (I have a hazy relationship to prequels canon - sometimes it's in my fics, and sometimes I just make vague allusions to it without putting in details, allowing readers to draw their own conclusions. So far I haven't felt invested enough to write a different version of events, though.)

Also, this is not a flaw, per se, but Luke is barely in this novel - he makes a brief cameo when Leia needs someone off-world to talk to and Mon Mothma is asleep - which saddens me greatly, because COME ON, it's TATOOINE, you didn't bring LUKE back? But I'm already writing that fic, so whatever.

I'm also annoyed that there is little attempt at original Tatooine worldbuilding, which again, is not really Denning's fault, it goes back to the very beginning. I mean, Legends canon just gave a number of Tatooine features like the Hotel Sidi Driss and the Great Chott the same names as their earthly counterparts. They didn't even TRY to come up with something original. (For consistency, I have kept the same names in my Tatooine fics, even though it annoys me -  I noticed this in the first place while doing fic research. It would not have been my first choice.)

In conclusion, I hope to write a fic about Alderaanian moss paintings someday. You have all been warned.
