"we didn't need to" DESERVES to be number two mashton moment, i've also been thinking about it since the podcast came out because it's?? so?? like what??? i don't even have words at all i'm literally just coming here for the excuse to talk/hear about some more mashton. also in general there was so much mashton in the podcast episodes? and like, just the fact that they essentially were both leading the whole thing... the driving force of the band. opposite end of my battery at its finest. i'm soft for them. somehow even more than before, it's ridiculous, i love them -taylor<3

okay. I have so many thoughts and feelings on this

first of all, the "we didn't need to" in question is part of the 5 Seconds of Summer Talk 10 Years - 2011 podcast at timestamp 23:51. Just in case anyone wants to relive that.

now on to the actual content!!!!!!!!!!! okay. organizing my thoughts. what gets me the most was michael's tone of voice when he said it. he wasn't flippant, he didn't brush off ashton's "but you didn't really know me very well," he didn't turn it into a joke even though he very easily could have. instead, we got the softest "we didn't need to" i've ever heard in my life. there was so much earnestness in his voice! so much sincerity. in that moment, he needed ashton to understand that inviting ashton into the band was never something for them to second-guess. they didn't need to know everything about ashton right off the bat, because they fit. they fit in some intrinsic way that can't be formed after playing 20 questions, in some way that just is or isn't, and with them it is.

not to be overly dramatic, but it's like some part of michael recognized a kindred spirit in ashton, even if he couldn't explain why yet. this band meshes so well together. they had an automatic chemistry. they knew right away that ashton would fit, and they knew that they weren't going to second-guess that. and michael needed ashton to know that in the year 2021 when they recorded that podcast. he needed ashton to know that from the moment he showed up to that first practice, he's been part of this band, even though they didn't officially ask him until december 3.

as for your other thought, opposite end of the battery my beloved, there have been discussions of mashton being a driving force in the band here and here but i feel like it was especially apparent in the podcast. first of all, they in general talked the most, maybe because they remember the most, but i feel like that might partially be because out of the four of them they were the two who were thinking of logistics and career moves throughout the years. michael was hustling in 2011. boy was out here on facebook getting them gigs, he was the one that people contacted, he went out and got them a drummer, and tbh based on what they said in the podcast of that episode it really seems like michael took the band the most seriously out of the three of them at that point. then ashton came in and really kicked them into gear! this is stuff that they actually said this isn't us speculating or anything. they are SUCH a driving force and they always have been!!! michael is the one who got them on their feet, and when ashton came into the picture he prompted everyone to really take the band seriously and commit to it. their faith in the band has never wavered and that is why the battery metaphor works so well!!!!!!

Hello taylor!! @squishmichael yes i see the summer brothers right in front of my eyes. Here we go!

You see, these two guys are getting paid to put on the show. The summers brother was a project these two college students , merely class mates, acquaintances really, started out of money shortage, so every weekend, they show up at this old, charming country style bar where old people go to get drunk and play cards that was desperately looking for an act for the evening hours to keep their customers from leaving. Obviously they didn’t exactly see this going anywhere; yes they can sing and do a little show, but neither of them wanted to do it for longer than it would take to get the money together for the mandatory college workshop from the college they both just barely got in. Nobody said it was easy and nobody said that there would be workshops, so it was either summer brothers or dropping out. Easy choice! They write a few easy and dumb songs, just to try it out.

Turns out tho, it’s actually fun. In the beginning it was hard not to lose it on stage, but after the show, the audience actually cheered for them, and calum looked so proud of himself after michael had to convince for hours before he even considered doing this. But they did it! It was good! Fun even. “We should do it again,” michael says afterwards when they’re going home. “You can’t tell me that didn’t fuck.” Calum just laughed. “Fuck wouldn’t be my choice of words, but yeah, i guess it was.” And so they make a deal. And the next weekend, The Summer Brothers are up again, and they deliver, and the next weekend, there are suddenly more people in the audience, and the word gets around that there’s a new act in town, and suddenly they actually have fans. Old fans, admittedly, but hey, fans are fans right! Michael and Calum actually become friends, close friends, they keep writing (mostly) lighthearted songs and have fun on stage and off stage. And maybe michael really gets attached to him because he didn’t exactly have too many friends so far. And maybe he develops feelings, just a little. And he thinks — hopes — that he’s not reading calum’s signs wrong, until one day the cold and harsh reality catches him totally off guard. Calum wants to quit, because he has made enough money and not enough time anymore, and michael is disappointed and maybe a little angry but he can’t say anything because that was the deal, getting the money and then quitting. So the next time, michael steps alone on stage, playing the songs, but there was no lightheartedness, no fun, no laughter, just a plain show. Something was missing, calum was missing, it was the summer brothers after all, not the summer guy, and after michael steps up to the microphone after the show to announce the end of the summer brothers, theres an uproar, and the whole crowd of old little ladies and gentlemen tells him to fight for calum, because they see it’s hurting him, and they miss him too, they were just too good!! So michael decides to take a chance and catches calum after class one day and asks him if it really didn’t mean anything to him, the song writing, the shows, the glances!! Michael can’t help but confess that he likes calum, more than a friend, that he really likes him but won’t force him to come back if he really can’t. So he gives calum a chance, if he feels the same, then michael will wait for him the next weekend before the show. If not, then he will move on and forget about it and they’d remain friends.

And the weekend arrives, and michael is nervously pacing around in the stuffy back stage, and then… calum shows up. Cowboy hat and everything. “We need a new name,” he tells michael, who’s just confused, obviously, why would that be the first thing calum says to him after a week of careful distance. “What? Why?”

And calum takes michael’s cowboy hat off that gets in the way, and he quickly kisses him and they both grin like the idiots they are. “Because i think we’re more like… ‘summer lovers’.” - “That’s cheesy as fuck.” - “It fucking is.” They don’t change it that day, not immediately, but a few days later, after brainstorming a few ideas that didn’t involve brother OR lover. “Boyfriends,” Calum suggest. “NO.” “You’re no fun.”

Favorite art medium? Like, type of art? I don't know if this counts, but I really like glass blowing. Ever since I watched Blown away I've been obsessed with it, its so cool

My favorite album this year? Does it come as a surprise that my answer is Luke's album? Bc it is. Its been a while since I loved an album to the point where I literally listen to it at least once a day. I also really liked Sour and I know I'm gonna lose my mind when Red (Taylor's version) comes out in november, but for now its wfttwtaf for sure

My favorite T rated 5sos fic is definitely Hey, Sweetheart by CalumSmiles

It was one of the first fics I read, almost year ago I believe, when I started reading 5sos fanfic and I think I might have reread it a hundred times since then. Its super soft and funny and it makes me really happy, Cal and Ash are very cute in it

ok first we have the photo from the live they did for the anniversary of calm and I know they technically werent together bc ash could only invite one of them at a time and it was chaos but it was so good to see them and hear them then we have that bts pic with their heads pushed together and they are being all smiley and cute, the actual pic is great but this one is just adorable. The photobooth pics that I love for the sole reason that they are so dorky and normal? Just four best friends having the time of their lives. The mashton and cake hug combo that needs absolutely no explanation. And last but not least, one of the first sightings of them together since the pandemic started ft. Calum's curly blond hair that I still miss to this day.
