"Never Forget Srebrenica / 11 July 1995" 26 years has passed since Europe was shaken by the genocide of more than 8000 muslim boys and men in the Bosnian city of Srebrenica, at the hands of Bosnian Serb troops during an operation of ethnic cleansing, witnessed by UN peacekeeping troops who failed resoundingly in their protection mission. Since then, limited justice has been rendered by international tribunals, and the repeated denial by several government officials of what happened reminds us of the still pressing need for the international community to support efforts to obtain truth, justice and reparation for victims and survivors. In the midst of the conflict in the Balkans during the 1990’s, the small city of Srebrenica, in Eastern Bosnia, was established as a “safe area” by the UN for civilians fleeing fights between Bosnian government and separatist Serb forces, during the breakup of Yugoslavia. On 11 July 1995, Serb forces attacked Srebrenica lead by Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladić, conducting a ten-day operation to take over Srebrenica and subject it to ethnic cleansing. More than 8000 people were killed, mainly Bosnian muslim boys and men. The reality of the genocide in Srebrenica was officially recognized in 2007 in a judgment delivered by the International Court of Justice. But countless Srebrenica survivors remain awaiting truth and justice. On 11 July each year, newly identified remains are buried at the Srebrenica memorial cemetery at Potočari. Organisations like Mothers of Srebrenica or movements like Women in Black advocate to continue the search for the missing persons and to identify those who were involved in and responsible for the massacre and bring them before local and international courts. Yet, the government of Bosnia & Herzegovina still lacks resources and a comprehensive strategy to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the crimes committed. Moreover, the communities are still deeply divided, and both the governments of Serbia and Republika Srpska continue to deny the reality of what happened at Srebrenica.

25 years ago today, Serbia committed the Srebrenica Genocide, the worst atrocity in Europe since World War II.
The youngest victim of the Srebrenica Genocide was Fatima Muhić, who was only a couple of hours old when she was killed. She would have turned 25 this year. She should have turned 25 this year.

TW: mention of rape
8372 Bosnian including men and women (who were also raped) were slaughtered by Serbian forces in the middle of European continent in the UN controlled zone.

Bought some lilies at the farmers market yesterday. They didn’t have any Bosnian lilies, so I bought some pretty Asiatic ones. Bosnian lilies are yellow. Their official name is: Lillium Bosniacum. “The native lily is said to symbolize the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is sometimes described as a symbol of their suffering, with the red stamen representing their blood during times of conflict. Bosnians all know the sweet musky smell of the golden flowers that blooms from May through July.” ⚜️🇧🇦💙💛 Today is July 11th. If you know a Bosnian, be kind to them on this date as we are all walking wounded. 😢 Today Bosnians remember the #SrebrenicaGenocide that took place on this date in 1995. It’s hard to convey the weight of this date and what it represents. If your people have not lived through a tragedy such as this, you may not be able to relate. For those who have and are currently undergoing war and displacement, we feel you. I posted the official #srebrenicaflower in case you come across it somewhere online today so you may understand what it represents. If you want to dig a little deeper, hit the link in my bio. “This small crocheted flower is a sign of remembrance of the genocide that took place in Srebrenica, Bosnia, in July of 1995. A symbol worn as a pin by many, the crocheted flower was developed in Bosnia by a crocheting association, Gračaničko keranje (“Gračanica Crochet”), which exists to conserve Bosnia’s traditional crocheting techniques. The eleven petals on this flower represent the day the genocide began, July 11th. The white petals represent innocence, while the green represents hope. In addition, the colors and shape also represent the burials of the victims. In Potočari, when the victims of the genocide are laid to rest, the casket is draped in green (the center of the flower). The white petals represent women mourning, dressed in white, surrounding the green center.” 🤲🏽 #neveragain #neverforget #neverforgetsrebrenica #bosnian (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf4UieHJIhH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Some times of our lives pass by waiting. In general, we wait for things that end well. Tonight's photos are from the 33 funerals at the Potoçari Cemetery on July 11. On that day I waited at the grave where burial 28 would be buried and I watched the ceremony from beginning to end. I'm sure the woman in the last photo was a relative of that funeral. Maybe it's her husband, maybe her son, or maybe her brother. It has been 24 years since 1995. If I say this woman has been waiting for 24 years ... It is a bad result when we look at the surface, but now she is happy that the location of the relative she gave to the ground is certain because there is a tomb that she can visit now, after the last 24 years. I edited these photos with Skylum Luminar3. The full version can be downloaded from the link on my profile. #treserbiduemusulmaniunlupo #bosnia #genocidio #guerra #1992 #srebrenicagenocide #genocide #bookblogger #bookblog #bookstagram #books #libri #librichelascianoilsegno #libridaleggere #libriconsigliati https://www.instagram.com/p/BzK42EdIUek/?igshid=wjgehfdqcgh
