By Kevin Niemann
Hundreds of Denver-area middle and high school students took to the streets on May 12 to resist the ongoing warfare against a woman’s right to choose and reproductive rights generally.
A 15-year-old woman from East High School in Denver did not mince words: “We’re tired of these old white men deciding the future of our country when they’ll be dead in 10 years.” Another speaker, a Denver native attending Florida A&M University, testified to the horrors she has witnessed while attending college. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed HB5, anti-abortion legislation, as well as the repressive HB1557 “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

🚨 #HongKongUpdate: A Hong Kong court has sentenced 12 individuals to 4-7 years in prison over their involvement in the 2019 pro-democracy protests and legislature storming.
This marks a significant development in the city's political unrest, recalling movements against Chinese rule since Tiananmen '89.

Interview with Joshua Wong: the handling of the coronavirus epidemic in Hong Kong

Interview with Joshua Wong: the handling of the coronavirus epidemic in Hong Kong
Tumblr media
Joshua Wong is a democratic activist and the secretary of Demosisto, a pro-democracy political group in Hong Kong.
We interviewed Joshua Wong about China’s handling of the recent coronavirus epidemic that originated in Wuhan, and how this crisis was handled in the former British colony. Joshua Wong also played an important role in persuading US politicians to pass the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act during the 2019 Hong Kong protests. Last year he was prevented by the Hong Kong government from taking part in the District council.

We saw the awkward interview with a senior WHO official who cut off the interview with a reporter when asking about Taiwan’s handling of the situation. Why we are still witnessing this kind of behavior?
I think this is another proof of how the World Health Organization is only serving the interests of Beijing or Beijing’s loyalists instead of trying to manage the global health crisis.
youtube
Recently we saw a new trend in Chinese social networks blaming the US about the Coronavirus or promoting conspiracies theories. Are Chinese netizens buying this version of the events?
Due to the Great Firewall and the political censorship of the Internet, it is difficult to let them know the truth or to have at least sufficient transparency and a free flow of information. The way we deal with fake news is not a specific country problem. The whole West should be more skeptical of fake news from China. People have lost their satisfaction, especially people living in Hong Kong, they have no trust in the government.
Is Hong Kong prepared to manage a possible worsening of the situation? And What is the situation in Hong Kong right now? Are you satisfied with Hong Kong’s government reaction?
After the outbreak of the Coronavirus epidemic, the Hong Kong government did not immediately take emergency measures: they did not seal the borders, and people were allowed to cross the border to travel to Hong Kong from China. Today people queue over midnight just to buy a pack of surgical masks. This is evidence of how the Hong Kong government has been unable to handle the situation, a crisis of top priority.
Hong Kong’s judiciary system will be strong enough to guarantee transparency and equity? For how much longer?
The lack of the rule of law in Hong Kong and the deficiency of the judicial system show the interference and manipulations of the communist regime. We are still in the hands of these people. We have never been optimistic about the Hong Kong legal system.
What is Demosisto’s next step?
In the past two months, Demosisto has imported over 1.3 million surgical masks to Hong Kong. And this shows the lack of efficiency and the inability of the Hong Kong government to deal with the crisis. We are trying to strengthen our contribution to civil society. And once the epidemic crisis is resolved, after the summer, the protest movement will continue.

Hong Kong 721 Yuen Long Attack (terrorism)
What happened last year today in Hong Kong (21•07•2019) has left a permanent scar on our hearts. It’s the day when the reputation of the HK police is gone, entirely. The white shirt triad beat the citizens in the Yuen Long Station with weapons, indiscriminately, including the pregnant woman.
What’s crazier is, the emergency hotline (999) refused to pick up for any calls for help for 2 hours. It spent 39 mins for the police to arrive to the station when it is just a few minutes drive from the police station to the metro station.
What’s more ridiculous is, two policemen turned their back from the helpless citizens and pretended that they saw nothing. The police claimed that they did not see any white shirt triads holdin any kind of weapons. What’s more insane is, they did not tried to stop anyone of the white shirt to attack the citizens, instead they put their hands in their shoulders and acted like ‘allies’. They still claimed that the citizens started the whole thing first and those in the white were just trying to protect their home when it’s fake. They still refuse to beat any responsibility and not willing to explain why it takes so long for them to arrive and why no one pick up the phone. They even shut down the police report station on that day so there’s nowhere the citizens can call for help.
Is this Hong Kong Police? Working with triads and beating teenagers and youngsters who is fighting for freedom and democracy? So what’s the difference between Hong Kong Police and triads when they are basically doing the same thing? It’s police brutality, it’s terrorism. The police force should be disbanded.
Since the establishment and the implementation of the national security law, words like ‘liberate HK, revxlution of our time’ cannot be said or it’ll be regarded as secession. But as a Hong Konger, we will never give up.

Hong Kong author Muk Yu never took part in the 2019 protest movement. But his debut book of eight short stories -- titled "Smoke on the Streets" -- set in the aftermath of mass resistance to the ongoing erosion of the city's freedoms under Communist Party rule has already garnered a literary award on the democratic island of Taiwan.

(4) Reposting these in light of the impending face-mask ban. A month ago legislators were extremely skeptical of the enforcability of such a ban (they still are). I can't believe it's actually happening tonight..
