*What if… Nova blowing him up was what caused him to have no cybernetics?* Dang. I didn't even think about that. Nova and Mandarin have the most brutal background with each other. It's even more of a hostile relationship when you remember that when it came to Clone Mandarin, Nova's the one who gave him the most savage beat down then other HF member has. Inside the worm after she saves Chiro she just glares at him and punches him to oblivion w/complete indifference to his fate. Back to your-

Mandarin left the most visible psychological scar on Nova w/her blaming him for her phobia of cold and inability to control her temper because of it (which she got over but she obviously still credits Mandarin w/that triggering). Nova possibly left the most physical trauma on him (the original. Chiro seems to have left the most visible scar on the clone by chopping his arm off and sending him inside the worm. Even then Nova's beat down looks behind Valina's abuse and Chiro's actions)-

3 One that probably affected him for the rest of his life. I doubt before then Mandarin had ever been hurt by someone on his team like that. I'm curious what his reaction afterwards was? Did he blame Nova completely or consider maybe he went about it the wrong way (in his own Mandy way)? Makes me wonder if Nova and Mandarin ever had a completely positive relationship. Even as babies he scared her and she always proclaims he was never good or could be good again. I wonder if Nova had the worst-

4 of him out of everyone even at the start? Not in a I hate him way because I do think back before Mandarin went tyrant wannabe they both cared about each other as teammates. I do bet she had respect for his leadership and trusted in him to guide them in the war. They're professional relationship was probably ok. But their personal bond was probably like iron and clay. 2 things that shouldn't mix at all. Mandarin and Nova might have been those 2 sibs that can't stand each other.

This is a damn good Mandarin & Nova analysis, Anon. I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to reply to it! 

I could absolutely see all of this. Nova & Mandarin definitely had the most antagonistic relationship, I’m thinking. Her and Sprx’s, while a little cringy for a modern/older viewer, was still built on affection & fondness. But hers and Mandarin’s...

I think there was part of each of them that loved each other, like you said. They were family. Siblings. But at the same time, there was a part of their personalities that would just. not. mesh.

Nova has been shown throughout the series as being one of the more empathetic/compassionate members, consistently doing her level best to stick up for the little guy & protect those she cares about. She does care about being good at her job, but I don’t think being the Best is something that concerns her. She just wants to help. 

& then you have Mandarin, who--based on flashbacks/inferrance--has been ambitious from the start. Perhaps not fully power hungry, but definitely concerned with being the Best of the Best and judging his own/other people’s worth based on their abilities and power levels. (I’m not going to go digging for the post right now, but either @monkeymindscream or @projectaffectivity did a post on how he is one of the only characters to actually. Not bash Sprx as being only the “dumb monkey” or dismiss his abilities, which is a good example of how this quality can be good!) In addition to this ambition, he also strikes me as a... big picture guy isn’t quite what I mean, but it’s close. He’s less concerned on the small pieces and more on the bigger prize.

So I can see where these two would have clashed from the beginning. Nova would have seen Mandarin as a bad seed from the get go, I think, even though she tried not to. Meanwhile, Mandarin would have seen her as resistant to his authority & perhaps even weakwilled for her emotional connection to things. So then you have the clash.

But combine that with Mandarin seeing POTENTIAL in her, and wanting her to be the Best, and pushing her hard so that she could BE the best, and then Nova likely misinterpreting it as more of their sibling rivalry.... and you have the big KABOOM we see in Snowbound’s flashback.

Which brings us to present day, & a lot of hard feelings and hurt between the two of them. After Mandarin’s bid for power, Nova looks back on all their negative interactions & uses that as confirmation that he was a bad egg--regardless of his intentions. & then Mandarin looks back at said interactions & sees Nova always pushing against him, not respecting him, and then even blowing him up while he was trying to help her... and sees a teammate who likely never wanted him around. Which furthers his resentment against her & then the rest of the team for “taking her side.” 

I could probably keep chattering about this, lmao, especially in a hypothetical redeemed Mandarin AU/CD, but I’m going to stop here because I’ve already talked long enough! If there was something in your asks that I didn’t reply to but you want me to, please let me know!

i feel like ultimately antauri was like never super inclined to be a leader because he always seemed to be happier and more fulfilled around the team as support and really mightve taken the actual leadership role out of dutiful necessity rather than because its what he wants from his life and he was just getting able to ease into this new dynamic as chiro matured and progressed as the leader before suddenly being thrust into making this insane sacrifice and change to his life and his dynamics with the team that he probably anticipated would come eventually and aauggghhtrvrhh

Dude!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sprx and Gibson!!!!!!!!! Season 1+2 vs 3+4

okay im finally in the Mood again. okay. okay

sparx and gibson. have literally one of my favorite relationships in the show, theyre SO fun every time theyre onscreen together. they love each other so much bro

i realized after my 3.7k gibotto meta that writing a huge analysis like that will literally fucking kill me, but this is probably still gonna be long anyways!

sparx and gibson are... honestly pretty similar to sparx and nova in how they tease each other a lot, but really do care for each other. however, where sparx and nova have... a LOT of trouble just TELLING EACH OTHER how they feel, sparx and gibson... dont actually have that kind of trouble? its more that they respect and trust each other but dont say it because their relationship consists so much of making fun of each other.

doing a seasons 1/2 vs 3/4 thing is kind of difficult, mostly because (sort of like gibotto) theres no real turning point in their relationship, more that they just. learn to openly trust each other more

trust is a big thing with these two, i think? i just. they have almost completely unwavering faith in each others skills! even when theyre arguing over who should lead in the savage lands, theyre not insulting each others abilities at all! theyre just arguing over whose abilities are more valuable at the moment.

like, early on you... REALLY cant see this. mostly season one. but. heh. hehe. swivels my gaze over to hidden fortress. “if gibson says itll work, then thats good enough for me.” “oh, why- thank you, sparx.” BRO!!!! “big brain. glad you could make it.” “yes, well, someone had to pull your fur out of the fire!” BRO!!!!!!!!!

like, even this early on you can see that. once sparx is done teasing gibson for being a smartass, he has SO MUCH RESPECT FOR HIM!! and likewise with gibson!! as soon as theyre finally able to go “hey, we dont need to be angry with each other for a god damn minute” theyre just. so fucking fond bro!!

not to talk abt dumb stuff like character arcs but. lol. their relationship transfers so smoothly from bickering to just- genuine affection and fondness as their characters grow! see that as sparx learns to be more open with his feelings and not always default to the teasing/nonchalant persona (especially with nova) he stops going for gibsons throat all the time, and- gasp!- actively appears to care about him and goes out of his way to ask gibson for help or to help him.

its been days and i literally cannot stop thinking abt this shot like.... novas finally back shes BACK and she just got shrunk by tv monster and sparx is going to help GIBSON up???? i cant believe this motherfucker

and yknow, over the course of the show their teasing goes from resentment (ie ape new world- “oh, that explains it doctor brain strain. wuh-huh.”) to more just. fun and friendly! brief moments of smugness rather than actual malice towards the other

sparx tends to tease gibson because he just- straight up doesnt understand what hes sayin sometimes! gibson is. EXTREMELY fucking pretentious. and sparx hates it. i mean who wouldnt?? but! sparx knows that the reason gibson is so pretentious is because he DOES know what the fuck hes talking about. sparx knows gibsons The Smart One and even though he can be bratty about it he still acknowledges it just fine

and like, eventually that distaste/resentment on sparxs end morphs into just. plain old trust! sparx trusts gibson and he knows that gibson can think on his feet and give them a solid plan. like, theyre put in several life-threatening situations and sparx is immediately like, hey, yknow who would know what to do? gibson.

gibson, likewise, cares about sparx a LOT! like. ive said it a million times but gibson views pretty much everyone as inferior to him bc of his intellect. wspecially sparx and otto! and ESPECIALLY SPARX bc every time gibson says something smart sparx makes fun of him. and up until hidden fortress, small tender things like “‘course i can grab him. i hope i can grab him.” in thingy were Not Heard by gibson. so gibson was very pleasantly surprised when in hidden fortress sparx let his guard down for a moment to be like “yeah, gibsons the smartest, i trust his judgement.”

and eventually, theyre just. buds! theyre straight up buds. gibson teases sparx in return and theyre just. BRO THEY R FRIENDS!!!!

“as you would say, sparx- ive got your back!” HRHRHRNGNNFND!!!!!

like. i CANNOT emphasize enough how supportive nd empathetic they are towards each other by the end. or, well.... earlier, its more sparx showing that he trusts gibson, and then later, its more gibson giving sparx more reason to trust him! its gibson being fun and friendly (as shown above) in response to sparx showing him that “hey, i dont actually hate you that much.” like.... need i remind you that in fire of hate, gibson warns sparx to be careful before touching it. in soul of evil, during the final scene with sparx tearing up nova, gibsons the only one who still looks sympathetic to him!! thats love bitch!!

so like. gibson and sparx are EXTREMELY fond of each other and once the gate is open for them to realize they both trust and like each other they finally start acting like it! they go from genuine distaste for each other to unregulated fondness and well i just think thats very cute and epic of them :]

So like everyone focuses on Sprx's unresolved issues w/Antauri. But does Antauri have unresolved issues with Sprx too? He doesn't seem as close to Sprx as he used to be (even though they are still close but there's more distance and readiness to turn on the other).

i think that like.... hmm. i think its less that antauri has issues with sparx specifically, but more just...... issues in general that make him less close to the team individually? like. he doesnt play chess with gibson anymore. he (like you said) doesnt seem to have that Unspoken Trust with sparx anymore. i get the feeling that silver antauri wouldnt be quite as helpful to nova if the events of snowbound had occured later in the series.

but like. honestly im ngl as a clowny sparx kin i am always more inclined to think more about sparxs side of his various relationships and also i am WAY too tired for critical thinking rn so u can drop ur thots on why u think antauri could distance himself from sparx in tags/replies/etc

above all, he wants whats best for the team. YES, he wants to stop skeleton king, but. yall remember when the probe said “you will say anything to keep your friends from destruction” and how when he was literally being mind controlled he was able to break free from it just enough to warn the hyperforce? and how he was the only one who could help nova quell her anger?

HOWEVER! i DO see where youre coming from. antauri is just as young as the team- just because he has better emotional regulation than the rest of them doesnt mean he isnt also scared, and confused, and goofy.

like.... my general opinion is that he isnt exactly a FATHER-figure to the team, more of an older-brother-figure, ESPECIALLY to chiro. but. he is DEFINITELY the teams dad.

literally the only well-written version of the “insufferable flirty pilot and dynamite gal who takes none of his shit” trope that ive ever seen. theyre SO good for each other and like... they get on each others nerves and have jealousy issues im ngl but they trust each other SO much and like. god. im not gonna wax too much poetic abt how much they love each other but. once they work through their communication issues theyre literally. so excellent. a LOT of fans have problems w how they handle their feelings for each other imho, either portraying sparx as too cynical/rude and forgetting that he has actual redeeming qualities that nova likes about him (lightening the mood in dire situations (like in hidden fortress/the skeleton king), spends down time playing video games with her, someone she knows she can rely on no matter what) or portraying nova as if she cant tell her feelings bc of some warrior/hero complex, when the fact of the matter is that she IS the one who confessed to sparx first. really one of my favorite god damn ships of all time and i REALLY wish there was more stuff that could explore their feelings for each other in a way that didnt feel so ooc T___T

literally every bit of fan content ive seen for it has been better than canon. however, i cannot even begin to bring myself to enjoy it, because of how inherently ooc it is. i like GIBOVA more than ottova because of how repulsed i am by ottovas in-show writing.

like. let me ask you one thing: what is special about otto and novas relationship? what kind of romantic chemistry do they have? what do they bring to each others metaphorical tables that they find appealing and unique?

the answer to all of that is nothing! NOTHING!!!!!

antova has more chemistry based on ONE EPISODE (snowbound) than ottova does in the entire god damn show. i could go on abt how antova has a slight power imbalance just because of how high regard nova holds antauri, but thats irrelevant atm

ottovas entire romantic chemistry revolves around nova sometimes acting like an exasperated big sister to otto, and her sometimes complimenting him and him blushing in return. its LAZY.

otto and novas dynamic changes nearly episode-by-episode. sometimes theyre teammates who trust each other a lot, as the respective foot cruisers, who support each other in battle and support each other emotionally. although, to be fair, name one time otto actually supports/helps nova in a way thats unique to her rather than something hed realistically do for any of is teammates 🤔🤔🤔

but then... sometimes shes the exasperated more ‘mature’ girl who reigns in his antics, who acts maternally and still.... is the one with more responsibility in the relationship, who does more and picks up his slack.

but phineas, you cry! how is this different from sparx and novas relationship, or gibson and ottos, both of which you love!

simple: the reasons behind their dynamics, and how those dynamics are integrated into the show.

sparx and nova are the traditional insufferable guy and feisty gal. HOWEVER, they have a lot of respect for each other, and are on EQUAL FOOTING: sparx pokes back when nova teases her- when she gets tired of his antics, it isnt her having to reign him in like with otto, its the two of them bickering with each other. their romance is well-done because it shows they care about each other underneath the bickering and that they trust each other- they would do ANYTHING for the other, they dedicate a lot of time and attention to each other, they even spend their downtime together.

gibson looks down on otto because of his own issues- he looks down on EVERYONE. gibsons arc involves learning that he doesnt HAVE to be the smartest, that there are things he doesnt know and has room to learn, and to stop being a condescending motherfucker accept that hes no better than the rest of the team. his relationship with otto as it grows and changes is a great way to show it- by the end of the series, he and otto are GOOD FRIENDS- they trust each other, and gibson holds a lot of fondness and respect for him.

what nova and otto offer to each other is very one-sided, and even then, nothing they would do for each other is unique or special. nova trusts him because hes her teammate, and she respects his engineering skills because hes a fuckin mechanical WIZARD. otto cares about nova because shes compassionate to him and shares his more sensitive side. nothing more, nothing less. their dynamic doesnt change meaningfully or reflect their character arcs. hell, their dynamic changes literally depending just on what the rest of the team is doing at any given moment.

i LOVE their friendship, really! i think its cute and i love their more tender moments together. them being the legs of the robot being a metaphor for them holding up the team, emotionally? brilliant! but god DAMN does their romance sour it for me!

i SEE the appeal, really! their friendship IS nice! but the way their “”romance”” is written in the show is just... SO painfully lazy and dull, i literally can never get myself behind it.

tl;dr their romance is SO basic and boring. theres absolutely nothing remotely compelling about it, and while theyre CERTAINLY amazing friends to each other, they are absolutely nothing more. u think nova getting with the insufferable pilot who secretly cares is bad? try her getting with a guy who she has literally never treated as anything more than a little brother. (beats the shit out of canon ottova)

so like, he cares abt their general wellbeing and safety, but cant exactly pick up on their emotions or anything. a combination of hyperempathy when it comes to like.... personifying and attaching to people and low empathy when it comes to actually Understanding Their Feelings

im ngl, im like... as diehard a gibson/otto shipper as u can get. but antauri/otto has definitely grown on me over the past couple weeks! otto is able to be actually honest about his feelings (which is something a lot of the team unfortunately lacks) and like. if he hadnt had to run away to protect chiro, OTTO COULDVE HELD HIS OWN AGAINST A FULLY MIND-CONTROLLED ANTAURI SO LIKE.....

otto actually has a LOT more emotional maturity than people give him credit for? he can be a bit of a doofus but when it comes down to it hes MASTERED being calm and taking charge when its necessary. night of fear, galactic smash and a bit of belly of the beast is what mainly comes to mind.

and im NOT just making this an otto meta i swear im just setting up my thoughts and to establish that like. even if he can come across as the Team Dad antauri with his overly-cool ways is like. still on Equal footing with the rest of the team (and by extension, otto, who usually gets the short end of the stick when it comes to how people portray him age-wise. i could go into a thing abt the infantilization of autistic people/characters but that isnt what were here for)

so.... in season one, lets be honest, we really.... dont get much antauri/otto interaction. we get more of antauri and GIBSON, and by season four theyre... barely even friends imho. BUT I DIGRESS!

the first REAL interaction between them off the top of my head? when antauri is reassuring otto of his skills in circus of ooze. so we can see right off the bat that antauri holds a LOT of respect for ottos engineering prowess. “your abilities are unequal in the universe” like HELLO?????? WE LOVE A SUPPORTIVE KING

so like... earlier on, otto and antauris relationship mainly is of otto giving up on SOMETHING and antauri reassuring him. which like.... isnt really the BEST base for a relationship, but u could argue that antauris character arc is about coming down and leveling the playing field with the rest of the team as chiro takes charge more and taking less of a paternal role to the main team and more of a ‘im just the friend who happens to know more sometimes’ backseat. so.

then we get to parts like i, chiro and both parts of the savage lands, where otto is like “hello i am still in the denial stage of grief” which HURTSSS but also. heh. as the mechanical genius of the team of course he would be the one who would believe that you could rebuild antauri via the silver monkey 😳😳😳

i also feel like ottos total faith in the super robot couldve worked itself nicely into antauris whole “machines can have a soul” thing in ghost in the machinder but.... alas.

but!! ottos arc about sort of learning to take charge and stay calm/rational when things are Shit (ie invasion of the vreen) lines up REALLY NICELY with antauris sort-of arc about letting go of the leadership role and taking place among the rest of the team which i think is sexy and epic.

like.... again, otto and antauri have CRIMINALLY low amounts of screentime, and im ngl, i dont.... really pay as close attention to their interactions as i probably could. but will that keep me from thinking about how otto probably became antauris main medic after he became the silver monkey? no. no it will not.

tldr, i think they ABSOLUTELY do not have enough screentime because their dynamic, especially post-sm, couldve been amazing, and WAS from the few bits we got to see. im not exactly an ottauri batter, but its basically the only antauri ship i actually like, which is pretty close, i think.

nova is SUCH a lovingly written character. she has SO much nuance, shes. LITERALLY A TRAUMATIZED FEMALE CHARACTER WHOS NOT WRITTEN AS WEAKER OR IRRATIONAL FOR IT and then just. reducing her complex relationships with the team as ship stuff makes me SO ANGRY

this is.... actually part of why i hate ottova tbh? like dont get me wrong it has potential but in canon? in actual episodes? THIS IS ALL THEIR (romantic) RELATIONSHIP IS. nova says something nice and otto blushes. and its LAME AS FUCK. given how much ACTUAL GOOD STUFF is in every monkeys relationship with her, watering it all down to “hehe girl pretty” just.... is SUCH a disservice to her character.

within the actual FANDOM, chiro is.... probably the MOST discussed character. he IS the main protagonist! at the moment the fandom is more like me and maybe three other people sharing goofy art around a dying campfire but.... trust me when i say ppl like to talk about chiro

we know almost NOTHING about chiros past. in an old promo, he was described as a ‘latchkey kid’, and we know his greatest fear is to be totally powerless- to be himself, but as a little boy. what the fuck was up with his childhood? we just dont know!

anyways.

chiro is by FAR the most important character in the show. he has the kost obvious arc among any of the characters- he grows from being a ditzy teenage boy whos enamored with the IDEA of being a flashy superhero, but when it comes to chores or really anything besides showing off and fighting crime, hes more than a bit of a slacker.

chiro is basically what wouldve happened if your generic showy thirteen year old became a superhero. which IS how the show was presented at first! “omg what if you had superpowers!!” i get the feeling chiro was MWANT to be someone kids could relate to, someone who liked funny cartoon characters and video games and didnt quite know who he was yet but was ready to learn. referring to chiro as the “boy leader” sort of merges his two respective halves- the part that adopts a funny blue fuzzball and wants to see his girlfriend, and the part thats possibly one of the only people to ever unlock the Inner Primate, and the leader of probably one of the most famous and powerful evil-fighting teams of the cosmos.

chiro ends up leaving behind his flashy, childish view of what being the leader of the hyperforce meant, and grows into his role as the chosen one. i know we joke about there being an exact replica of the hyperforce except as frogs, but i really do get the feeling that chiro was the chosen ONE. who was he chosen by? we dont exactly know. maybe his destiny wasnt quite on the scale of something like the Being, maybe their interaction with it was just some sort of accident, but chiro (and by extension, the hyperforce) is clearly meant for something bigger than ONE dark one in ONE planet.

damn. now im REALLY wish we had a season five to tell us what it was.

beyond the obvious ‘i relate to him and his emotional troubles’ kinnie stuff, like.

hes just. SUCH a good character, from a narrative perspective AND from just the As A Person perspective

the main reason is because ive written metric FUCKTONS of sparx meta though lol. like. not an exaggeration theres over 200 pages in the srmt discord channel i use and i bet at least 80% of it is just abt sparx

he has such fun and interesting dynamics with the rest of the team, as well as SUCH an amazing and interesting arc with heroic fatigue and stuff leading up to the foh business. i loved talking about him so much that i just. ended up liking him lol. YES i want to wring sparxs neck 24/7 because hes a dumbass YES i also want to give him a tender hug and let him know that hes doing the best he can despite being in the middle of an intergalactic war we exist

like. hes a whole HOST of tropes packed into one 2’9 pink package and nearly every single one of them is done right. heroic fatigue, jerk with a heart of gold, even his romance with nova that fits every cliche book to the LETTER is somehow done well! hes such a well-balanced character, and also. i really like to make fun of him. whats a favorite character if you dont get to call them an idiot sometimes?
