Summary: Lorelei Browning has just secured a job as an assistant professor at Exeter College in Oxford. Naturally, she is eager to prove herself and meet every challenge sent her way, but what she does not expect is the tall, handsome stranger who will quickly become much more than a colleague…

The sun has begun its descent over the horizon, painting the clouds pink and gold, as Beatrice and I cross St Giles’ later that day. The lampposts shine like torches in the deepening darkness, lighting our path to the pub. A group of students stands under the well-known blue signboard, and Beatrice and I squeeze past them to enter the pub, the old wooden planks creaking beneath our boots.

The Eagle and Child is one of the most famous pubs in Oxford and one of my favourite places in the city. With its low, beamed ceilings, golden lights, and shabby stools, it is like any other English pub, yet it is infinitely more special. During the 30s and 40s, it was home to the Inklings, a group of writers composed of Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, among others; they would meet here twice a week to enjoy a pint and discuss their writing. Nowadays, scholars and literature enthusiasts alike frequent the pub, surrounded by photos commemorating these literary heroes whose spirits still seem to survive in every room. 

Richard and William wait for us in the Rabbit Room at the back of the pub. Every table is packed, with people moving to and fro between them, holding pints and food. Even so, Richard immediately meets my eyes, and he smiles brightly as he stands to welcome us. 

“Hi!” I exclaim once we reach the table. 

“Hello, love,” he says before capturing my lips in a chaste but lingering kiss that instantly chases the evening chill from my body. When we pull apart a few moments later, I rest a hand on his chest, my mind still focused on our kiss, and he smiles knowingly. 

Once I gather myself, I turn my attention to William, who is watching me with a mischievous smirk. “Hey, William!” 

“Lorelei.” He nods before pulling me in for a hug. “It’s nice to see you again.” 

“I’m so glad you’re here!” I reply before gesturing to Beatrice, all too aware of the awkwardness that accompanies first meetings. “This is my best friend, Beatrice. She’s visiting from Edinburgh for the weekend. Bea—this is William and Richard.” 

“We meet at last,” Richard says with a smile, which Beatrice returns.

“Yes—I’ve heard so much about you!” 

Her playful tone does not escape anyone’s notice, and Richard raises his eyebrows as he glances at me, then back at her. “Oh yeah? What has she been saying about me?” 

“Wouldn’t you like to know?” she replies playfully, the awkwardness between them already dissipating. 

“It’s nice to meet you, Beatrice,” William chimes in as she turns to him. 

“Likewise!” 

After shrugging off our coats, Beatrice and I take a seat; she on one of the stools beside William while I squeeze myself onto the bench next to Richard, who rests one of his large hands on my thigh. 

“So, Beatrice—Lorelei was giving you a tour of Exeter?” 

“She was! It’s such a beautiful place—you guys are so lucky to work there!” 

“We are,” Richard and I acquiesce. 

“Did she show you the Dining Hall?” 

“Yes! She also showed me the chapel, all the different courtyards, and her office, of course. Lorelei’s a great tour guide.” 

“I learned from the best,” I say, glancing up at Richard. 

He winks at me, then says, “How about a drink?” 

“Yes!” I nod, but before I can stand up, Richard rises. 

“On me—we’re here to celebrate you, after all.” 

Heat rises up my neck, and I want to tell him that it is not necessary, but I know better than to protest. Beatrice joins him, and they disappear toward the bar, chatting amicably. I smile to myself, glad to see how naturally the conversation seems to flow between them. 

“So congrats on your book!” William says as he raises his pint to his lips. 

“Thank you!” I reply with a smile. 

“Is it something that an average guy like me can understand? Or will I be completely lost?” 

“Well, it is an academic book, adapted from my Ph.D. dissertation, so it’s not exactly light reading,” I explain with a chuckle. “But I tried to keep it as accessible as possible. I didn’t want to write something of worth only to a tiny group of specialists.” 

“Alright, I might give it a try then.” 

“Oh, you really don’t have to!” 

William takes another sip of beer. Then he seems to hesitate as a frown suddenly wrinkles his forehead. “Can I—can I ask you a bit of a weird question?” 

“Er, sure?” I reply uncertainly.

“Is everything okay with him?” 

It is my turn to frown. “What do you mean?” 

“I don’t know….” He shrugs. “He just seems a bit off. Distracted. And I asked him how work was going earlier and he seemed really tight-lipped about it. I don’t want you to tell me—I’d never put you in that uncomfortable position—but just … is there something at work that’s stressing him?” 

I am both relieved and troubled by his words. “So it’s not just in my head….” William gives me an inquiring look, urging me on, but my stomach twists itself into knots. “I don’t know what’s going on—he won’t tell me. A few weeks ago, he had a meeting with this famous professor at Harvard, and they were discussing maybe doing some research together, but I haven’t heard anything about it since. He refuses to talk to me about it.” 

“Do you think maybe the research isn’t going the way he hoped? Or maybe the project isn’t happening altogether and he’s disappointed?” 

“I hadn’t thought of that,” I breathe out, and my heart tightens in my chest at the thought of Richard trying to cope with this disappointment on his own. “Why wouldn’t he tell me?” 

William reaches out to squeeze my hand reassuringly. “Well, you know Richard … if something like that really is going on, he probably doesn’t want to burden you with it, what with your book release and everything.” 

That does sound like Richard. “Oh, God, I feel awful.” 

“Don’t,” William hastens to say. “You haven’t done anything wrong. He’s the one choosing not to tell you.” 

“I suppose…” 

“Just give him time. Whatever he’s going through, I know he doesn’t mean to hurt you by not telling you.” 

I nod, but before I can say anything, Richard and Beatrice return. They are both laughing at something and despite the ache in my heart, I smile at them as they take up their places around the table. 

Richard wraps one arm around my shoulder, squeezing me tight, and raises his pint, and we all do the same. “To Lorelei. Congratulations on the first of many brilliant books you will write.” Then he gazes into my eyes and lowers his voice, speaking only to me. “I’m so proud of you, sweetheart.” 

I smile softly, losing myself in the azure depths of his eyes as Beatrice and William raise their own pints and say, “To Lorelei!” before taking long sips. I do not fail to notice Richard’s lingering gaze as I take a sip of my own pint, so I make sure to slowly lick my lips after swallowing, and I have to bite back my smile when his fingers tighten about my shoulder. 

“Thank you all for being here. It means so much to me,” I say, smiling widely, and Richard presses a tender kiss onto my temple. “When I was writing my dissertation, I never could have imagined that it would soon be published as a book, much less that I’d be celebrating that accomplishment here in Oxford, where I work as a lecturer at Exeter! It’s been such an incredible past few months.” 

“You should be proud of yourself! I know I am,” Beatrice exclaims, and we smile at each other. 

“Claire wanted me to congratulate you for her, by the way,” William says in sudden remembrance. 

“Oh, that’s so kind of her. Thank her for me!” I reply, then, after taking a sip from my pint, I ask, “How is she? And how’s Thomas?” 

“They’re both well,” he says, then a fond smile spreads over his face. “I can’t believe Thomas is already halfway through his first school year.” 

“Time goes by so fast,” Richard muses. “I remember when he was a tiny little baby.” 

William chuckles. “Except he was never tiny. He was huge—all Armitage babies are, according to mum,” he adds, and the two brothers laugh. 

“So how old is your son now?” Beatrice asks. “Sorry—I still get confused by the school system here.” 

“Thomas just turned five a little over a month ago.” 

“He’s the most adorable child!” I chime in. 

“He loves you!” William says, then he turns to Beatrice and adds,  “After his birthday party the other day he talked about her non-stop on our drive back home.” 

My heart swells, and Beatrice smiles at me as she says, “Aw, cute! Lor has that effect on all kids. Remember when Prof Anderson invited us to her house for dinner, and only ten minutes after we’d arrived, her daughter was sitting on your lap and begging you to read her a story?” 

“Oh, yeah, I remember,” I reply, chuckling. From the corner of my eye, I notice Richard watching me with a fond smile as he squeezes my thigh. I return his smile and lean in to rest my head against his solid shoulder, inhaling his familiar, comforting scent as the coarse tweed of his blazer rubs against my warm cheek. 

“You’ll make a great mom, one day,” Beatrice goes on, smiling all the more, but I can only chuckle uncertainly. Richard’s hand on my thigh suddenly feels unnaturally stiff. 

Thankfully, William, perhaps sensing the sudden awkwardness, turns his attention back to Beatrice. “So where are you from? I know Lorelei said you live in Edinburgh, but your accent tells me you’re not from there.” 

“Then I guess I need to work on my Scottish accent,” Beatrice says playfully, though not without an uncertain glance in my direction. “I’m from a small town in Maine, in the US. I came here for my Master’s and I fell in love with Scotland so I moved there permanently.” 

“Scotland is beautiful,” William acquiesces. “So is that where you two met—at uni?”

“Yeah, we were in the same program at the University of Glasgow,” I reply. 

“Do you have any wild stories about Lorelei to share, Beatrice?” Richard asks playfully. 

I laugh and shake my head. “Oh, God.” 

“Well, Lor was always a very serious, respectable girl who went to all her classes and studied on the weekends,” she says, but then she smirks mischievously. “But when she decided to loosen up, yes, she could get very wild.” 

To my embarrassment—and amusement—Beatrice proceeds to recount stories of drunken misadventures from our postgrad days, causing Richard and William to burst out laughing countless times. The rest of the evening continues this way, with everyone drinking, sharing stories, and laughing. The moon shines bright in the sky when we step out into the chilly night sometime later, and my whole body feels light and tingly as Richard kisses me good night.

“Sorry about what Beatrice said earlier,” I whisper hesitantly, my lips still mere inches from his as he holds me tight against his chest with his arms wrapped around me. “I’m sure she didn’t mean anything by it….” 

“It’s okay—don’t worry,” he says before kissing me again, the bitter taste of beer lingering on his soft lips. “How am I supposed to sleep without you pressed against me tonight?” 

I smile, his words stirring a wave of affection in my heart. “I should think you’d be getting more sleep without me there?” 

Richard’s rumbling laugh reverberates through me. “We’ll just have to make up for it after Beatrice’s visit.” 

I seal our deal with a kiss, tenderly caressing my tongue with his before I reluctantly pull away. “I’ll call you as soon as I’m up tomorrow morning.” 

“I’m counting on it,” Richard replies with a soft smile. 

I wave goodbye to William one last time before Beatrice and I set off toward my flat in the opposite direction. The streets are quieter at this hour, though we can still hear the distant echoes of pubs and parties, filling the night with that timeless, youthful air that is quintessentially Oxford—an air which, perhaps surprisingly, is in perfect harmony with the grey beauty of the ancient buildings. 

“I’m sorry about earlier—when I said you’d make a great mom,” Beatrice begins hesitantly after a long moment of silence. “I realize I shouldn’t have said that in front of a guy you’ve been dating barely six months. It just slipped out—I’m sorry.” 

“It’s alright. Don’t worry about it.” 

She nods slowly. “I have to ask though … you seemed a bit … sad after I said that. Does Richard not want kids? I mean—if you know.” 

I swallow past the emotions clogging my throat and say, “We have talked about it, and he told me that he would have loved to have kids. But he’s in his late forties, and though it could still happen for him, he thinks he’s too old.” 

“Oh, Lor…” Beatrice breathes out as she reaches out to squeeze my arm. “Honey, I’m so sorry.” 

“Why? It’s alright.” 

Beatrice stops in her tracks. “How is it alright? This is a major thing to disagree on—”

“We’re not disagreeing on anything!” I snap back louder than I intended. 

Beatrice frowns. “But you’ve always wanted kids.” 

I shrug. 

“What do you mean—?” She copies my movement. 

“It’s fine, okay?” I say as I cross my arms over my chest. “I’m not going to break up with Richard just because we’ll probably never have kids.” My heart tightens in my chest even though I mean what I say. “I love him.” 

“Honey, I get that, but—” 

“There’s no but!” I retort. “Look I….” I trail off and bite my lips.

“What?” 

I sigh. “You’ll laugh at me if I say this.” 

“I won’t laugh!” she says incredulously. “Come on, Lor—you know you can tell me anything.” 

I hug myself tighter and look down at my boots and the uneven cobblestone. “I know Richard and I haven’t known each other that long, but … he’s the love of my life.” I smile unconsciously as the words roll off my tongue. “I can’t really explain it—I just know. Would I like to have kids with him in the future? Yes, probably. But if it doesn’t happen … it simply doesn’t happen. And that’s okay!” Beatrice still seems uncertain, though, so I add, “Richard and I have talked about it, and I told him exactly what I told you. So you don’t have to worry about me; I’m not giving anything up for him.” 

After a moment of silence, Beatrice offers me a soft smile. “Okay. I just want you to be happy—you know that, right?” 

I smile back and extend my arms for a hug, which she happily returns. “I know that. Thanks for looking out for me.” 

“Always,” she replies and squeezes me tight before we set out towards my flat, our arms linked as we walk the rest of the way under the moonlit sky.

• A celebration of Girlschool’s 40 plus years of rocking the globe, kicking off with their independently released 45 ‘Take It All Away’ b/w ‘It Could Be Better’.

Formed at school in the mid-70s, when friends Kim McAuliffe on guitar and bassist Enid Williams joined forces as Painted Lady, Girlschool formed in 1978, swept up as part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement that also gave us Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Saxon, recruiting lead guitarist Kelly Johnson and drummer Denise Dufort in April 1978.

Debut LP ‘Demolition’ made it into the UK Top 30 in 1980, and the girls even found time while recording their follow up album ‘Hit And Run’ (1981) with producer Vic Maile, to record the ‘St Valentines Day Massacre’ EP with label mates Motörhead as HeadGirl.1982’s ‘Wildlife’ EP would be Enid’s last outing with Girlschool for a while, as she was replaced on bass by Gil Weston for ‘Screaming Blue Murder’ (1982).

Their fourth album, ‘Play Dirty’ (1983), was issued in the States on Mercury Records, who also picked up the option to release their fifth, ‘Running Wild’ (1985). The first album to be released without Kelly Johnson, it saw founder members Kim McAulliffe and Denise Dufort joined by Gil Weston, Jackie Bodimead (lead vocals, keyboards) and Cris Bonacci (guitar).

A new deal with GWR saw albums ‘Nightmare At Maple Cross’ (1986) and ‘Take A Bite’ (1988), by which time the bass slot had been filled by former Rock Goddess Tracey Lamb. Their eighth studio album, the self-titled ‘Girlschool’ came out in 1992 and 2002’s ‘21st Anniversary – Not That Innocent’ marked the beginning of a more prolific time for the band, as they would follow it up with ‘Believe’ (2004), ‘Legacy’ (2008).

CD 4 features many rare B-Sides and non-album cuts, as well as demos dating from 1978 up to 2002 and CD5 boasts an ultra rare live recording from the pre-Girlschool Painted Lady.

This five disc set comes with an extended essay from NWOBHM expert John Tucker, and features plenty of pages of rare photos and sought after memorabilia.

Dozens of Clarence House staff have been given notice of their redundancy as the offices of King Charles and the Queen Consort move to Buckingham Palace after the death of the Queen, the Guardian has learned.

Up to 100 employees at the King’s former official residence, including some who have worked there for decades, received notification that they could lose their jobs just as they were working round the clock to smooth his elevation to the throne.

Private secretaries, the finance office, the communications team and household staff are among those who received notice during the thanksgiving service for the Queen, at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh on Monday, that their posts were on the line.

Many staff had assumed they would be amalgamated into the King’s new household, claiming they were given no indication of what was coming until the letter from Sir Clive Alderton, the King’s top aide, arrived. One source said: “Everybody is absolutely livid, including private secretaries and the senior team. All the staff have been working late every night since Thursday, to be met with this. People were visibly shaken by it.”

Folklore of Tobago: Mermaids and Fairymaids

“There be mermaids here and Leviathans, great denizens of the deep. Among the swirling currents and white-capped blue-green waters, just where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean, close by St. Giles and near to Misty Marble Island, past Anse Gouleme and Anse Briant, towards Bird of Paradise Island and down the coast past Speyside to Fat Hog Bay, it is remembered from long ago that this was where the mermaids came to play.

Tobago mermaids are male and live in the deep, deep sea. They mate with the fairy maids of the rivers and the secret mountain pools. Riding upon the crests of waves, they are handsome men like kings of old or warriors of long ago, beplumed and richly garbed. They may grant a wish, transform mediocrity into genius, and confer wealth and power.

Sometimes the water people seek relationships with mortals. Some men are particularly attractive to the fairymaids, especially men with smooth skin.

The fairy maid is said to be beautiful with long, lush hair and one tiny foot in the shape of a deer’s hoof. She may use her power to “turn” a man’s head. She may steal his shadow and leave him quite demented. In which case, accompanied by friends and family and with the help of a “workman,” he must go to the river and address the water, pleading for the restoration of his lost shadow. This done, he must leave the water's edge and not look back.

Fairymaids may be found in caves behind waterfalls or beneath certain bridges where the river runs deep and swift. In days gone by, they were seen near certain waterwheels.

To discontinue a relationship with a fairy queen, an offering of two pairs of shoes must be made. The first must be burnt on the beach. The fairymaid wil then rise out of the water and ask if she is to be paid for past services. The answer must be, "nothing but this pair of shoes." The second pair must then be thrown into the waves.”
