(Scene where Kirk and the Crew first meet the Apollo-Guy in person)

Apollo to Kirk: I said you will worship me!

Kirk to Apollo: And you´ve got a lot to learn!

German version (translated back into english by me):

Apollo to Kirk: I said you will worship me!

Kirk to Apollo: You are not quite my type ...

The German dub of TOS is the gift that keeps on giving. One of these days I have to do a side-to-side comparison of the original and the translation (as if I needed any more time-consuming hobbies...)

In this scene of That Which Survives, Spock, Kirk and McCoy talk about the (long dead) woman on screen. McCoy admires her beauty, Spock tells him that beauty is transitory. In the original, Kirk concludes the argument and the episode with a sort of poetic "beauty survives". In the German dub, it's a much more mundane "Was wissen Sie denn, Sie Sex-Muffel?", aimed at Spock.

I don't even know how to properly translate that... "What do you know, you [sort of an adorable word for a person who is very 'meh *shrug emoji*' about sex, maybe even slightly repulsed by it]?"

Like, why? Why would you do that? I love it, but why? What was the thought process here?

Quick question: my friend says Star Trek is a uniquely US cultural phenomenon, is it true? Like she says Japanese and EU people can be into Star Wars but if you say “Live long and prosper” they give you the blank eye??? Do people outside the US even know what Trek is outside the reboot movies??

I don't think the nazi star trek episode is banned in germany, I'm pretty sure I saw that one on tv this year 🤔

oh, weird. but i guess i mostly watched tng, so if that's from tos then i wouldn't have seen it anyway

patterns of force was banned until 1995. it was first shown with a german dub on pay tv in 1996, and on november 4th 2011 it was finally shown on public tv

Like, you watch the original and the german version back to back and compare and sometimes there is not even a faint similarity in the topic they are talking about
