Hi Auntie Bree, I have what's probably a silly question. I've been calling my magical notebook my grimoire, but apparently because I also do some journaling (related to my practice) there, I've been told it's better to call it a 'Book of Shadows.' My problem is I think the term is a bit too Wicca-adjacent, and I'm not Wiccan- is it really that big of a deal to call my notebook my grimoire?

Not in the slightest.

The term "Book of Shadows" is indeed Wiccan and it's certainly not a universal term for a book or journal that holds a record of someone's journey with the craft.

I think what the people giving you that info are missing is that you're not Wiccan and they're mistakenly applying Wiccan ideas as if they're meant to be the baseline rule for all witches. Moreover, you don't want to use the term because you prefer something else. Which is FINE. Even if you WERE Wiccan and didn't want to use the term, that would be fine too. There's nothing wrong with the term, it's just a matter of personal preference.

The word "grimoire" used to be reserved for those big hefty magical tomes that were basically like textbooks or instruction manuals for a given practice, usually something with a lot of rituals or correspondences or details involved. Nowadays, it's just as likely to be a combination of study materials and personal reflection, since that's what modern witches need.

So yeah, if you want to call your personal record of your craft a grimoire rather than a BoS, go for it.
