BEST MOVIES OF 2020 (Arranged alphabetically)

1. David Byrne’s American Utopia Director: Spike Lee Cast: David Byrne, Chris Giarmo, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Angie Swan, Bobby Wooten III, Mauro Refosco, Tim Keiper, Gustavo Di Dalva, Jacquelene Acevedo, Daniel Freedman, Stephane San Juan Critic’s Notes: Stop Making Sense is my favorite concert of all time. So, American Utopia easily slots in as one of my favorite. And boy, this is the most urgent film of 2020. It is that watchable as David Byrne possesses his inner Mr. Rogers to guide Americans to an ideal society.

2. Driveways Director: Andrew Ahn Cast: Hong Chau, Lucas Jaye, Jerry Adler, Robyn Payne, Christine Ebersole, Brian Dennehy Critic’s Notes: Just the sweetest swan song from Brian Dennehy before his passing. Generally, this film is a slice-of-life story of the unlikely friendship between a lonely boy and a lonely senior, and the poignancy is too precious that it struck a chord.

3. Fan Girl Director: Antoinette Jadaone Cast: Charlie Dizon, Paulo Avelino Critic’s Notes: For my native pick from Philippine cinema, here is an unlikely story between a fan and her idol. It is a predictable deconstruction of an acclaimed, who becomes an over-the-top antithesis to his onscreen persona. But the script is sharp, so as the delightful leads.

4. First Cow Director: Kelly Reichardt Cast: John Magaro, Orion Lee, Toby Jones, Ewen Bremner, Scott Shepherd, Gary Farmer, Lily Gladstone, Alia Shawkat Critic’s Notes: Kelly Reichardt became the Yasujirō Ozu of 2020, for this film contains the year’s most meditative shots and moodiest atmosphere on an otherwise simple story of friendship.

5. I’m Thinking of Ending Things Director: Charlie Kaufman Cast: Jesse Plemons, Jessie Buckley, Toni Collette, David Thewlis, Guy Boyd, Hadley Robinson, Gus Birney, Abby Quinn, Colby Minifie Critic’s Notes: Charlie Kaufman is one of the pioneers of meta storytelling. And him helming one of the most unnerving suspense novels is a strange one. But it brings to light the subgenre of existential horror. First viewing may not be scary, but lingering on its subtext is the scariest part.

6. Minari Director: Lee Isaac Chung Cast: Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Youn Yuh-jung, Scott Haze, Will Patton Critic’s Notes: My pick for the best film of 2020, Minari is another slice-of-story about a Korean immigrant family wanting to achieve the American dream in Arkansas. What it lacks on dramatic stakes, it has the heart of a striving family. And the best subplot comes from grandma Soon-ja.

7. Palm Springs Director: Max Brabakow Cast: Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, Meredith Hagner, Camila Mendes, Tyler Hoechlin, Peter Gallagher, Chris Pang, June Squibb, J. K. Simmons Critic’s Notes: The emblematic comedy of the last year, Palm Springs takes in the time-loop trope and gives it a fresh twist. The true heart of it is the chemistry between Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, whose signature personas seemingly blend.

8. Soul Director: Pete Docter Cast: Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House, Alice Braga, Richard Ayoade, Phylicia Rashad, Donnell Rawlings, Questlove, Angela Bassett Critic’s Notes: Aside from Brad Bird, Pete Docter just become one of the Pixar directors whose films are worth waiting. Soul is an intriguing character study of two souls needing to find the purpose of their lives. With its layers and layers of themes, this is the boldest Pixar project since The Incredibles.

9. Sound of Metal Director: Darius Marder Cast: Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke, Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff, Mathieu Amalric, Chelsea Lee Critic’s Notes: Riz Ahmed is the reason to see this film that honors the deaf and disabled community. His character’s deconstruction and subtle expressions give such gravitas that it is heart-wrenching to watch. Also, the best sound design of the year. (Sorry, Tenet.)

10. Wolfwalkers Director: Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart Cast: Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whittaker, Sean Bean, Simon McBurney, Tommy Tiernan, Jon Kenny, John Morton, Maria Doyle Kennedy Critic’s Notes: Cartoon Saloon just landed itself as one of the prime animation studios, next to Pixar, Studio Ghibli and Laika, with their most ambitious film yet. Wolfwalkers is perhaps their Princess Mononoke with a fresh twist on Irish history.

The Nike Shek Lei Grind court

According to nike

Basic to Nike’s belief in sport creating change is seeing places of sport as the transformative grounds for fun and self-discovery. In June, Nike is extending that vision, while practicing responsibility to the planet, with the Shek Lei Grind court, a refurbished community basketball court in Hong Kong.

Located in the city’s Kwai Chung residential neighborhood, the court’s surface is made of Nike Grind, composed of up to 20,000 pairs of used sneakers. The spot was chosen for its proximity to 14 primary and secondary schools in addition to the region’s need for open recreational space for kids to play. For a touch of whimsical fun, British artist James Jarvis created illustrations of spherical cartoon characters playing basketball that appear across the court.

To assist with local youth programming, Nike is partnering with InspiringHK, a local nonprofit that aims to promote social mobility and inclusivity through active participation in sport.

The Shek Lei Grind court joins other Nike courts around the world that serve as reenergized spaces for sport and community. In collaboration with Parisian artist Stephane Ashpool, Nike and Converse helped refurbish three community courts from 2019 through 2020 in Paris, Beijing and Mexico City. The courts form a network of communal zones for kids to engage with sport — and one another.

Hiii, một màn come back Tumblr thật xịn không?

MÌNH CÓ BẦU!

Gần như tất cả bạn bè thân thiết của mình dù trai hay gái đều biết mình có một nỗi ám ảnh sợ không thể có bầu. Thực tế là mình cũng thả 2 tháng, ngày ngày check app rồi còn mua cả một combo 20 que thử ovulation, rồi pregnancy test check đều đặn thường xuyên. Nhưng không dính. Đến tháng thứ 3 thì mình ốm, ốm bết xê lết đến nỗi cả tháng have sex 1 lần, unique sex. Xong không hề nghĩ mình có thể có bầu. Khi triệu chứng đầu tiên là đau ngực, đau lắm luôn không thể nằm sấp được, kiểu cơn gió thoảng qua cũng đau ngực, mình vẫn nghĩ là do mình uống thuốc nên chắc bị căng ngực ^^. Dấu hiệu tiếp theo là ở buổi Pilates cuối cùng, mình thở hổn hển dù bình thường được Stephane xếp vào nhóm tập hardcore. Hôm đấy mình quá mệt đến nỗi chỉ tập các động tác cơ bản như người mới tập. Xong vẫn nghĩ là chắc do dạo này ốm, mệt, sức khỏe không tốt nên tập tành không trâu bò.

Cho đến hôm mình đi làm việc với khách hàng ở cách văn phòng đúng 1km. Bình thường với 1km này mình vô tư đi bộ, cả đi cả về mà không mệt chút nào cả. Thì hôm đấy mình nhớ rất rõ, mình chỉ đi bộ chiều về, mà đi được đến Nhà hát lớn là chừng hơn nửa con đường thì mình mệt muốn chết luôn. Kiểu như vừa chạy xong 10km ấy, tim đập nhanh xong thiếu oxy khó thở. Lúc đấy mình vẫn nghĩ là đói ăn. Vì bình thường mình ít ăn bữa sáng, nhưng không mấy khi bị đói đến mức mệt như vậy. Đại khái thế xong mình cố đi nốt về đến Luklak ăn một bát bún ốc =)). Kì diệu lắm, ăn xong MỆT HƠN TRƯỚC!! Kiểu như đã hết sức rồi lại còn phải dùng nốt chút sức lực để ăn ý. Sau đó mình đi bộ về văn phòng người đầm đìa mồ hôi giữa trời thu Hà Nội những ngày đẹp nhất. Cảm giác như vừa chạy bộ từ nhà đến văn phòng..

Hôm sau đó thì mình quyết định thử que. Vì thấy dù có lờ đi bao nhiêu tín hiệu cơ thể bằng các cách giải thích hợp lý vđ, thì mình vẫn thấy sai quá sai. Hôm thử que là hôm thứ 2/10 trong chuyến đi bộ đội tập huấn của aHuy, meaning là mình home alone. Và 2 vạch đỏ chót, lần đầu tiên nhìn thấy trong đời các bạn ạ..

Cảm giác? Ui không có cảm giác gì hết ý, không bất ngờ vì had sex without protection thì bất ngờ gì, cũng không vui, thật sự là không vui vì cảm giác chính xác là hơi lo vì đợt đấy mình đang dùng kha khá thuốc và mình biết thuốc đó không tốt cho em bé. Nhưng mình vẫn lạc quan vì thứ nhất là mới dùng thuốc, thứ hai là nói chung không tốt thì đúng nhưng bảo là harm cho baby thì not exactly. Anyway, việc đầu tiên mình làm là đặt lịch hẹn với bác sĩ HFH. Việc thứ 2 là nhắn tin cho Hương người cách mình 5-6 múi giờ. Khi Hương reply do không ngủ được xong Hương bảo mình đừng khóc nhé thì mình lăn ra khóc? =)))) Không hiểu tại sao haha.

Nói chung câu chuyện phát hiện ra bầu bí cũng có một chút kì diệu nhưng quả giống như truyền thuyết các bạn ơi, mình biết có nhiều người canh 1 phát ăn luôn, nhưng cũng có rất nhiều người cứ không canh thì có.

Ah và đến tuần này thì bác sĩ so far confirm là em bé trai. aHuy mấy hôm giờ cứ trêu mình không biết đẻ vì hai đứa thích con gái hơn một chút. Nhưng mình nghĩ một cách lý trí thì em bé trai sẽ chiều mìnhhhhh, nhường nhịn người mẹ đành hanh này, nó có quấn aHuy mình cũng sẽ không ghen vì bị cướp mất aHuy. Hi vọng mini Huy dễ tính dễ gần dễ ăn dễ ngủ như aHuy xong lại chiều và nhường nhịn mình nữa. Hihi cả đời này đến con mình cũng chiều mình thì mình mãn nguyện lắm các bạn ạ.

Bây h 4 tháng rồi bụng bắt đầu to thật. Nhưng mình vẫn cứ không tin. Tối qua vạch bụng bôi kem chống rạn mình bảo aHuy, huhu anh ơi em chửa thật này =))) Mình đến giờ vẫn chưa tin lắm chuyện mình có bầu, vẫn sợ béo các bạn ạ, dù tăng khoảng 2kg nhưng mà sợ cân khủng khiếp, lần nào cân cũng phải poo pee xong naked vào sáng ngủ dậy để cảm thấy là lúc người gầy nhất =)))). Bụng thì to nhưng ai hỏi vẫn mạnh dạn thú nhận là bụng béo bụng mỡ chứ em bé nào 4 tháng làm to bụng được như thế. Hôm qua mẹ mình bảo, béo bụng mà như này thì nguy hiểm thật Giang ạ =)))) vì thế thì quá béo mất. Huhuhu. Nói chung là chửa thật, béo thật, bụng to thật.

Mình vẫn cứ thấy kì kì. Không biết mọi người kiểu có bản năng làm mẹ hay trưởng thành thế nào, chứ mình tâm hồn đối với việc chăm sóc người khác vẫn như một đứa trẻ. Kiểu như là cho đến giờ người duy nhất mình take care là Sisi, chị mèo nữ hoàng của mình. Mà từ hồi ở riêng mình đã ít take care Si nhưng vẫn tự mình ràng buộc rằng mình là người bảo hộ của Si, là người phải có trách nhiệm với sức khỏe, sự sống còn và an nguy của Si. Poki thì không, vì Poki mình chia sẻ trách nhiệm đấy với aHuy, và rằng aHuy luôn coi Poki là ... Poki. Well, quay lại chuyện mình vẫn cảm thấy mình quá bé nhỏ, quá trẻ con để lo cho một ... em bé. Hôm qua mình ở nhà, aHuy về quê. Mình lười đi grab sang nhà mẹ để ăn cơm. Nên mình gọi ... gà rán về ăn. Sau đó gọi cháo trai và trứng vịt lộn nữa. Ăn xong thì nôn chắc vì đầy bụng khó chịu. Xong về aHuy mắng là không lo cho con, không có trách nhiệm chăm lo cho sức khỏe của em bé. Mình cũng suy nghĩ một chút. Đến bây giờ mình vẫn theo kiểu thích gì ăn nấy, thích gì làm nấy, ít khi nào nghĩ là uh làm cái này thì tốt cho em bé, mình phải cố làm. Mình không có cái đức hi sinh đấy. Như đã nói, ngoài Si, mình chưa từng hi sinh điều gì cho ai cả. Mình ích kỉ và vô lý, bao nhiêu năm vẫn làm mọi thứ theo ý thích của mình.

Có thể vì mình chưa có kết nối với em bé lắm, chưa thấy em bé rõ rệt lắm. Nên vẫn hờ hững. Chứ như Sisi với Poki, đi làm 8 tiếng mà còn nhớ muốn gặp chúng nó. Chắc con mình đẻ ra mình không đến nỗi hờ hững với nó đâu nhỉ?

Paying tribute to the lost stars of Mexico 86...

Many of our heroes have unfortunately passed away since that glorious Mexican summer of 1986, including the tournament's greatest icon.

Here's a celebration of those no longer with us…

Italia Gaetano Scirea

Italy's Mexico 86 skipper was a World Cup winner, who was capped 78 times. The Juventus legend, who retired in 1988, sadly died in Sep 1989 in a car accident in Poland while scouting for the club. He was just 36.

Paolo Rossi

Italy's star of 1982 did not feature at all in Mexico. He moved from Milan to Verona after the World Cup and retired a year later at just 30, moving into real estate and TV punditry. Rossi died in Dec 2020 at 64.

Gianluca Vialli

The young Sampdoria striker appeared as a substitute in all 4 of the Azzurri’s games in Mexico. He joined Juventus for a world record £12.5m in 1991 and won his 59th and final cap in 1992. Later coached Chelsea. He died in January 2023, aged 58.

Bulgaria Georgi Dimitrov

Bulgaria's captain in 1986 joined Saint Etienne after Mexico and would go on to win 77 caps before retiring in 1990. He died in May 2021 aged 62.

Anio Sadkov

The midfielder won 80 caps during a 10-year international career that ended in 1991, although he only retired in 1996. Sadakov later managed Lokomotiv Plovdiv. He announced he had MND in 2014 and died in 2017 at 55.

Zivko Gospodinov

The attacking midfielder won 39 caps between 1983-87, and retired in 1992. He died at 57 in May 2015.

Argentina Diego Maradona

The ultimate football icon played for Argentina at two more World Cups after 86, and was his nation's coach in 2010. His passing at just 60 in Nov 2020 was marked worldwide.

Jose Luis Cuciuffo

While absent from the Panini album, he was a key man in Argentina's defence, starting all but the first game. He died aged just 43 in 2004 after suffering a fatal gunshot wound while out hunting in Buenos Aires province.

Jose Luis Brown

The defender was a key man for Argentina in Mexico, scoring the opener in the final. After retiring in 1989 he enjoyed a long coaching career, including a spell with the national team. He died at 63 in Aug 2019.

South Korea Chung Yong-hwan

While not in the 1986 Panini album, the defender played every game in Mexico and was captain in 1990 on his way to 86 caps. He retired in 1994 and died following a long illness in 2015, aged 55.

Oh Yun-kyo

The goalkeeper played all 3 games in Mexico, winning the last of his 10 caps in the defeat to Italy. He later coached in the US but died in Seoul in 2000, aged just 40.

Belgique-Belgie Leo Clijsters

The defender did not feature in the 86 Panini album and was used sparingly, although he made a bigger impact in 1990. His daughter Kim became a World No.1 tennis player. Clijsters died in 2009 at just 52.

Stephane Demol

The Anderlecht defender, 20, made his international debut just weeks before Mexico, but played every game as Belgium reached the semis, scoring in the epic win against the USSR. Later joined Porto but won his final cap at 25 in 1991. Was Belgium's assistant manager from 2006-08. He died following a heart attack, aged 57, in June 2023.

Irak Nadhim Shaker

While not in the Panini album, Shaker was a key man in Mexico and won the last of his 57 caps against Mexico. He enjoyed a long coaching career, becoming Iraq’s coach in 2009. He died, aged 61, in Sep 2020 after contracting COVID-19.

Ali Hussein Shihab

The midfielder, part of Iraq’s Asian Games winning team in 1982, played every minute of Iraq’s sole World Cup appearance to date in 1986. He won 73 caps from 1981-89. Shihab died in Oct 2016, aged 55.

Ahmed Radhi

Iraq’s only World Cup goalscorer to date, following his strike against Belgium, was named Asian Footballer of the Year in 1988. He won 121 caps between 1982-97, scoring 62 goals. He died, aged 56, in Jun 2020 after contracting COVID-19.

Natiq Hashim

The defensive midfielder played all 3 games in Mexico, winning 97 caps between 1982-90. He was coaching leading Omani team Muscat Club when he died suddenly, aged 44, in Sep 2004.

Mexico Pablo Larios

The goalkeeper won 48 caps between 1983-91, finally retiring in 1999. Larios’ son died when crossing the US border in 2008. Larios struggled with drug addiction and died, aged 58, in Jan 2019 due to complications following surgery.

Tomas Boy

Mexico's captain won 52 caps between 1979-87, playing 400+ games for Tigres. After retiring in 1988, El Jefe had a long coaching career, and died aged 70 in March 2022.

Rafael Amador

The Pumas defender started 3 games at Mexico 86, which were his final caps. He later coached Pumas, and died aged 58 in July 2018 following a long illness.

Paraguay César Zabala

The defender won 49 caps and retired at 30 in 1991 after his 3rd Copa America. He underwent heart surgery in the early 2010s and passed away at 58 in Feb 2020.

Roberto Cabañas

The former New York Cosmos striker remains one of Paraguay’s football icons. His career later took in Lyon and Boca Juniors and he retired in 2000, when he was 39. He died suddenly in Asunción in Jan 2017, aged 55

Luis Caballero

The defender won 27 caps, but did not make the Panini album or play in Mexico. He was killed during a robbery at his shop in Villa Morra in 2005. His son, Luis Nery Caballero, won 12 Paraguay caps between 2011-13.

SSSR Andriy Bal

The Dynamo Kiev midfielder was a key man in 1982 but played just 1 game in Mexico. He was later assistant manager with Dynamo and the Ukraine national team. He died in 2014 at 56 after suffering a heart attack during a seniors match.

Viktor Chanov

Dynamo Kiev's No.1 through the 80s was Rinat Dasaev's understudy for the USSR, although he did play in the final 1986 group game v Canada. After a successful career in transportation, he died in 2017 aged 57 reportedly due to injuries sustained after falling from a ladder.

Magyarország

Jozsef Kardos

The 1983 Hungarian Footballer of the Year was a stalwart for Ujpest throughout the 1980s. The defender played all three games in Mexico, and won 33 caps in total. He suffered a heart attack in 2015 and died, aged 62, in July 2022.

Brasil Socrates

The iconic midfielder won his 60th and final Brazil cap in Mexico. He retired 3 years later and worked as a physician, coach and pundit. His health deteriorated during 2011 and he died in December of that year aged 57.

Edivaldo

The Atletico Mineiro winger only won 3 caps and did not feature in Mexico. He died in a road traffic accident on Castelo Branco highway in São Paulo in 1993 at 30. His family later sued Fiat claiming a car malfunction led to the tragedy.

Espana Javier Urruticoechea

The Barcelona goalkeeper was picked for 3 World Cups but only won 5 caps all between 1978-80. He retired in 1988 and died, aged 49, in a road accident near Barcelona in May 2001.

Algerie Faouzi Mansouri

The Montpellier defender played in both the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, and later worked for the Nicollin group, owned by the former president of his club. He died, aged 66, in May 2022.

N Ireland Alan McDonald

The QPR defender was new to the NI set up in 1986 and went on to win more than 50 caps over the next decade. He later became a coach at QPR and managed Glentoran. He died suddenly, aged just 48, in June 2012.

Danmark John Eriksen

The forward scored against W Germany in his sole appearance in Mexico. After ending his career in 1993, Eriksen suffered Alzheimer's disease, and died, aged just 44, after a fall in a nursing home in 2002.

Lars Høgh

The OB goalkeeper started 2 games in Mexico, including the defeat to Spain. He worked as a coach after retiring in 1995. Høgh died after a long illness in Dec 2021, at the age of 62.

Deutschland BRD Norbert Eder

The 30-year-old Bayern anchorman made his international debut in May 1986, started every game in Mexico and then never played for W Germany again. He died, aged 63, in Nov 2019.

Scotland Davie Cooper

The exciting winger, who played 400+ games for Rangers, died tragically young at just 39 in 1995. He collapsed after suffering a brain haemorrhage while filming a TV show and died a few days later.

Andy Goram

The goalkeeper was with Oldham when he was selected for Scotland's squad. Unused in Mexico, he joined Hibs in 1987 and went on to play more than 200 games for Rangers and won 43 caps. He retired in 2004 and died, aged 58, in July 2022 following a long illness.

Polska Wladek Smolarek

The Widzew Łódź forward scored Poland’s winner against Portugal - their only goal in Mexico. Smolarek retired in 1996 at 39 and saw his son Ebi win 47 caps. He died in 2012 at 54.

Marek Ostrowski

The defender won 37 caps between 1981-87 and eventually retired in 1995. He died following heart surgery in March 2017.

Portugal Manuel Bento

Portugal’s No.1 in 1986 broke his leg ahead after the England game and never played for his country again. He retired in 1992, aged 44, after 20 years at Benfica. He died suddenly in March 2007, aged 58.

Vitor Damas

The Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper came into Portual’s team for 2 games in Mexico due to Bento’s broken leg. He retired in 1988 and became Sporting’s goalkeeping coach. He died following a long illness in 2003, aged 55.

Frederico Rosa

The Boavista captain and central defender played all 3 games in Mexico, eventually winning 18 caps from 1985-89. Frederico retired in June 1995, at 38. He died aged 61 in Feb 2019, aged 61, after suffering from MND.

José António

The Belenenses defender did not appear in the Panini album but he did come on a sub for the last few minutes against England in what was his 3rd and final cap. He retired in 1991 and died suddenly at 47 in June 2005.

Fernando Gomes

A legend at Porto, scoring almost 300 goals in two spells. He was Europe's top goalscorer in 1983 and 1985. Gomes was Portugal's captain in Mexico, starting all three games. Gomes died in November 2022, aged 66, following a long illness.

England Ray Wilkins

The Milan midfielder moved on to Rangers after Mexico and later managed QPR and coached Chelsea as well as working as a pundit. He died suddenly in Apr 2018, aged 61.

Maroc Abdelmajid Dolmy

The Raja Casablanca playmaker played every minute of Morocco’s glorious Mexico campaign, eventually winning 76 caps between 1973-88. He died suddenly, aged 64, in July 2017.
