EXCLUSIVE: One year ago we told you that a second season of John le Carré adaptation The Night Manager was quietly being developed under the codename Steelworks.
Now, Deadline can reveal that the BBC and new co-pro partner Amazon have gone big on a supercharged two-season order of the thriller, with Tom Hiddleston returning to lead, Hugh Laurie coming back as EP and with a new director in I Hate Suzie’s Georgi Banks-Davies. A third season has also been greenlit. David Farr returns as writer and Stephen Garrett is showrunner.
The Night Manager Season 2 will begin filming later this year and will pick up with Hiddleston’s Jonathan Pine eight years after the explosive finale of Season 1, going beyond the original book, which was written by the celebrated British writer in 1993. Additional plot details are being kept under wraps and there is not yet confirmation as to whether EP Laurie’s Richard Roper, who was last seen in the back of a paddy wagon driven by arms buyers who were not best pleased with him, will return to star. Hiddleston will also EP and will discuss in more depth on tonight’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Produced by The Ink Factory in association with Character 7, Demarest Films and 127 Wall, and in co-production with Spanish partner Nostromo Pictures, The Night Manager Season 2 was sold to Amazon by Fifth Season. The first was co-produced with AMC.
New director Banks-Davies, a BAFTA-nominee who takes over from Susanne Bier, has credits including I Hate Suzie, Garfield and upcoming Netflix series Kaos.
The Night Manager Season 1 was a huge success, watched by millions and winning multiple BAFTAs, Emmys and Golden Globes including best actor for Hiddleston. Also starring Tom Hollander, Olivia Colman and Elizabeth Debicki, it followed Pine – who ran a luxury hotel in Cairo – as he attempted to infiltrate the inner circle of Roper’s crime syndicate after being hired by Foreign Office task force manager Angela Burr.
The first season was commissioned more than 10 years ago and the show has since been remade in India, lapping the UK version by swiftly having a Season 2 greenlit for Disney+ Hotstar in May last year.
Simon Cornwell and Stephen Cornwell, le Carré’s sons who run The Ink Factory, said Season 1 proved “a landmark moment for the golden era of television – uniting on-screen and behind-the-camera talent at the top of their game – and an audience reception which was beyond our wildest imagining.”
They added: “Revisiting the story of Pine also means going beyond the events of John le Carré’s original work: that is a decision we have not taken lightly, but his compelling characters and the vision David has for their next chapter were irresistible.”
Amazon MGM Studios Head of Television Vernon Sanders said: “We are elated to bring additional seasons of The Night Manager to our Prime Video customers. The combination of terrific source material, the wonderful team at The Ink Factory, a great writer in David Farr, an award-winning director in Georgi Banks-Davies, as well as the talented cast truly make the series the full package.”
Hiddleston said: “The first series of The Night Manager was one of the most creatively fulfilling projects I have ever worked on. The depth, range and complexity of Jonathan Pine was, and remains, a thrilling prospect.”
BBC content boss Charlotte Moore added: “After years of fervent speculation I’m incredibly excited to confirm that The Night Manager is returning to the BBC for two more series.”
The Night Manager series two is created and executive produced by Farr, based on the characters created by le Carré. Additional executive producers include Garrett for Character 7, Banks-Davies, Laurie and Hiddleston; Joe Tsai and Arthur Wang for 127 Wall; Stephen and Simon Cornwell, Michele Wolkoff, and Tessa Inkelaar for The Ink Factory; Adrián Guerra for Nostromo Pictures; William D. Johnson for Demarest Films, Nick Cornwell, Susanne Bier, Chris Rice for Fifth Season and Gaynor Holmes for the BBC.

The BBC and Prime Video have announced further cast joining Tom Hiddleston in The Night Manager, which was recently announced to return for two new series. Made by the award-winning London and LA-based independent studio The Ink Factory (The Pigeon Tunnel, The Little Drummer Girl) in association with Character 7, Demarest Films and 127 Wall, and in co-production with Spanish partner Nostromo Pictures, series two will star Diego Calva (Babylon, Narcos: Mexico) and Emmy Award nominee Camila Morrone (Daisy Jones & The Six) alongside Indira Varma (Obsession, Obi-Wan Kenobi), Paul Chahidi (Wicked Little Letters, The Serpent Queen), and Hayley Squires (Adult Material, Beau Is Afraid).
The new series of The Night Manager will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK, and, outside of the UK, globally on Prime Video, in a deal negotiated by FIFTH SEASON, which is handling global distribution of the series.
Inspired by the characters in John le Carré’s best-selling novel, the upcoming second series will once again be written by show creator David Farr and will be helmed by BAFTA winning director Georgi Banks-Davies (I Hate Suzie, Paper Girls). Tom Hiddleston (Loki, The Essex Serpent) reprises his celebrated role as Jonathan Pine, eight years after the explosive finale of series one.
Series two director Georgi Banks-Davies says: “I wrote my dream list of actors to join The Night Manager, and I can’t quite believe that I am now welcoming that list of talent to the show. What an incredible cast joining the brilliant Tom Hiddleston for this next chapter… I cannot wait to get them in front of the camera now and see the magic come to life.”
The acclaimed first series of The Night Manager was nominated for more than 30 awards and won multiple BAFTAs, Emmy Awards, and Golden Globes – including Best Actor for Tom Hiddleston. Commissioned by the BBC, in the UK it was watched by more than 10 million viewers, making it one of 2016’s most watched TV shows.
The Night Manager series two is created and executive produced by David Farr, based on the characters created by John le Carré. Further executive producers include lead non-writing EP Stephen Garrett for Character 7, Georgi Banks-Davies, Hugh Laurie, and Tom Hiddleston; Joe Tsai and Arthur Wang for 127 Wall; Stephen and Simon Cornwell, Michele Wolkoff, and Tessa Inkelaar for The Ink Factory; Adrián Guerra for Nostromo Pictures; William D. Johnson for Demarest Films, Nick Cornwell, Susanne Bier, Chris Rice for FIFTH SEASON and Gaynor Holmes for the BBC. The series is produced by The Ink Factory in association with Character 7, Demarest Films and 127 Wall, and in co-production with Nostromo Pictures.
The Night Manager series one is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Hunting of the Wren in the Isle of Man
“By many European peoples—the ancient Greeks and Romans, the modern Italians, Spaniards, French, Germans, Dutch, Danes, Swedes, English, and Welsh—the wren has been designated the king, the little king, the king of birds, the hedge king, and so forth, and has been reckoned amongst those birds which it is extremely unlucky to kill. In England it is supposed that if any one kills a wren or harries its nest, he will infallibly break a bone or meet with some dreadful misfortune within the year; sometimes it is thought that the cows will give bloody milk. In Scotland the wren is called ‘the Lady of Heaven's hen,’ and boys say:—
“‘Malisons, malisons, mair than ten,
That harry the Ladye of Heaven's hen!’
“...Notwithstanding such beliefs, the custom of annually killing the wren has prevailed widely both in this country [i.e., the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland] and in France. In the Isle of Man down to the eighteenth century the custom was observed on Christmas Eve or rather Christmas morning. On the twenty-fourth of December, towards evening, all the servants got a holiday; they did not go to bed all night, but rambled about till the bells rang in all the churches at midnight. When prayers were over, they went to hunt the wren, and having found one of these birds they killed it and fastened it to the top of a long pole with its wings extended. Thus they carried it in procession to every house chanting the following rhyme:—
“‘We hunted the wren for Robin the Bobbin,
We hunted the wren for Jack of the Can,
We hunted the wren for Robin the Bobbin,
We hunted the wren for every one.’
“When they had gone from house to house and collected all the money they could, they laid the wren on a bier and carried it in procession to the parish churchyard, where they made a grave and buried it ‘with the utmost solemnity, singing dirges over her in the Manks [i.e., Manx] language, which they call her knell; after which Christmas begins.’ The burial over, the company outside the churchyard formed a circle and danced to music. About the middle of the nineteenth century the burial of the wren took place in the Isle of Man on St. Stephen's Day (the twenty-sixth of December). Boys went from door to door with a wren suspended by the legs in the centre of two hoops, which crossed each other at right angles and were decorated with evergreens and ribbons. The bearers sang certain lines in which reference was made to boiling and eating the bird. If at the close of the song they received a small coin, they gave in return a feather of the wren; so that before the end of the day the bird often hung almost featherless. The wren was then buried, no longer in the churchyard, but on the seashore or in some waste place. The feathers distributed were preserved with religious care, it being believed that every feather was an effectual preservative from shipwreck for a year, and a fisherman would have been thought very foolhardy who had not one of them. Even to the present time, in the twentieth century, the custom is generally observed, at least in name, on St. Stephen's Day, throughout the Isle of Man.”
—J. G. Frazer, Spirits of the Corn & of the Wild, part 2 (The Golden Bough, vol. VIII, 1912, pp. 317-319)
This wren, preserved by taxidermy, was still being used as of 2016 for the traditional Manx dance known as "Hunt the Wren."

Vitamin Supplements Consumers today are faced with a myriad of information concerning vitamin supplements. Should they take them, should they not? Are they helpful or are they harmful? Are consumers simply wasting their money, flushing it down the toilet so to speak? One day the experts say one thing and the next day there are new studies by other experts. This all creates quite a dilemma for those who are trying to do the best for their bodies. However, through the years there has been a steady stream of overwhelming evidence proving that vitamin supplements are helpful and beneficial for physical health, and moreover, may affect behavior. Many in the medical community have advised their patients for years that taking multivitamins only gives them expensive urine, since severe vitamin deficiencies such as scurvy and pellagra are all but unheard of in industrialized countries (Gorman 2001). However, evidence amasses that they were wrong. A growing number of studies indicate that even a small vitamin deficiency can be harmful to your health (Gorman 2001). The New England Journal of Medicine states that one of the B. vitamins, folate, has been proved to limit the neural-tube defects in embryos, and that folate combined with B12 and B6 decreases the re-blockage of coronary arteries after angioplasty (Gorman 2001). The "American Family Physician" reports that "dietary antioxidants and folic acid may play a role in the pathophysiology of coronary disease and stroke" (Pearce 2002). Aside from the physical health benefits of vitamin supplements, recent studies show that nutrition plays a key role in behavior. Studies by Dr. Stephen J. Schoenthaler, California State University, Stanislaus professor of criminal justice, and Dr. Ian D. Bier, medical director of the Dietary Research Foundation in New Hampshire, show that low-dose vitamin supplements are "proving to be preventive medicine against violent behavior" (Cal 2002). According to the studies, "pre-adolescent schoolchildren, teenage delinquents, and adult offenders who received vitamin and mineral supplements produced a 45% greater reduction in violent behavior compared to control groups who received placebos" (Cal 2002). These are the first studies using clinical trials, to indicate a link between diet and antisocial behavior. Schoenthaler's and Bier's studies have been authenticated by Senior Scientist Bernard Gesch of Oxford University. Gesch study, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, found that "inmates who took vitamins were 37% less likely to break institutional rules compared to inmates taking placebos" (Cal 2002). These studies have drawn impressive attention. Schoenthaler and Bier have recently been authorized by Congress to work within the public school system. Their contention is that "children who received vitamin tablets also produced significantly better grades than children who received placebos" (Cal 2002). According to one of their more recent studies, serious rule violations of young adult offenders in two Northern California institutions were "38% lower for those taking a special vitamin and mineral supplement than a placebo group" (Cal 2002). Furthermore, of 468 elementary school children and 62 confined teen-age delinquents who took dietary supplements, all showed significantly less violent and non-violent antisocial behavior compared to groups taking placebos (Cal 2002). "Schoenthaler said, "Thousands of children and adults have now participated in these international studies. The most important finding here is that violent behavior can be reduced significantly at a very low cost" (Cal 2002). For years researchers have studied the benefits of vitamin E on the skin, hair, heart, and over-all health. Now researchers have proven that vitamin E supplements could save millions of health care dollars each year. A study published in the "American Journal of Cardiology" showed significant savings from various supplements, especially vitamin E In a "double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 2,002 patients...vitamin E reduced non-fatal heart attack risk by 77%" (Natural 1998). Researchers found a savings of $578 per patient in patients taking vitamin E supplements compared to those who took placebos. The savings were based on a reduction in hospital admissions for nonfatal heart attacks. Another study published in the "Western Journal of Medicine" calculated the "cost savings from taking folic acid to reduce the risk of certain birth defects, multivitamins and minerals to reduce the risk of low birth-weight infants, and vitamin E to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease" (Natural 1998). Their findings showed that "hospital charges related to coronary heart disease could have been reduced by as much as $5.6 billion annually for men and women over 50 if large number of Americans had consumed at least 100 IU of vitamin E daily" (Natural 1998). Evidence of the benefits of taking vitamin supplements is mounting daily. It is all too clear there are health benefits for the body and for the pocket book as well. Those in the medical profession who claim that vitamin supplements are simply flushed down the toilet are being proven wrong. In fact, it is proven that not taking vitamin supplements is more costly to the consumer due to the fact that reduced vitamin intake increases chances of hospital visits. Moreover, with the increase of youth violence and anti-social behavior in society today, the studies by Schoenthaler and Bier are worth heeding. The old adage, "We are what we eat" is now being proven scientifically. With the increase of junk food in American diets, as well as the depletion of nutrients in the soils of crops, it is even more important to rely on vitamin supplements to ensure a healthy mind, body, and pocket book.

The Night Manager will be returning for two more seasons with Tom Hiddleston at the helm once again, it has been reported.
The renewal of the hit adaptation of John le Carré’s 1993 novel, which aired to great fanfare eight years ago, has been greenlit by Amazon Prime and the BBC, according to Deadline.
It is understood that the new seasons about the hotel-manager-turned-spy will be filmed later this year in London and South America.
According to reports, David Farr – who wrote the original series – has been brought back to write season two.
The first series, which won two Emmys and three Golden Globes, featured an impressive cast including Olivia Colman, Elizabeth Debicki, Tom Hollander and David Harewood.
It followed Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine, the former British soldier who is recruited by the manager of a Foreign Office taskforce to infiltrate an arms dealer’s inner circle while he is the night manager of a luxury Cairo hotel.
The series quickly became one of the top-rated UK dramas of 2016 and spawned a number of subsequent le Carré adaptations from The Ink Factory, the production company run by le Carré’s sons Simon and Stephen Cornwell.
The new adaptation will be set in the present day, according to Deadline, and will follow Hiddleston’s Pine facing a new and more deadly challenge after being informed that arms dealer Richard Roper – played by Hugh Laurie – is dead.
Laurie, Colman and Hiddleston all won Golden Globes for their performances in the 2016 spy thriller, which became an international success and even led to rumours at the time that Hiddleston, 43, could be the next James Bond.
While the Bond rumours may have been put to bed, it remains to be seen where the plot may take Pine, seeing as Le Carré‘s novel has no sequel.
When Laurie was asked in 2016 whether the series would return, he said: “It’s based on a novel, we’ve got to the end of the novel and John le Carré has yet to write another novel. So in cold practical terms, no, we’re done.”
Le Carré, who died in 2020, took a very hands-off approach to the first series, but was said to be pleasantly surprised by the alterations Farr made to his novel for the script.
Charlotte Moore, the BBC TV chief, told The Telegraph in 2017 that “Le Carré is very involved” in discussions about the next series, saying: “We wouldn’t be talking with them if he didn’t think it was a good idea.”
Announcing the new series, Ms Moore said: “After years of fervent speculation I’m incredibly excited to confirm that The Night Manager is returning to the BBC for two more series.”
“Of course he wants to take part in it, it’s his work. He will definitely be involved in what we do next,” she added.
The Telegraph has contacted Le Carré’s estate for comment on the announcement of the new seasons.
Previously, Susanne Bier, who won an Emmy for directing the first series, revealed that scripts for a second instalment were “slowly being developed”, but she said writers were wary about being able to create the same hit again.

Farr agreed with this sentiment at the time, telling Variety in 2016 that he was “not keen” to do a second series, adding: “I liked the fact that the story ended where the story ended.
“But that’s entirely personal. Given the characters, there is a potential for something more to happen, and I’m sure someone could find the right idea. But for me it’s done. My simple feeling is that I wouldn’t be able to make the next one as good.”
Hiddleston, 43, will be returning to executive produce the new seasons as well as play Pine.
The British actor said: “The first series of The Night Manager was one of the most creatively fulfilling projects I have ever worked on. The depth, range and complexity of Jonathan Pine was, and remains, a thrilling prospect.”
Simon and Stephen Cornwell said season one proved “a landmark moment for the golden era of television – uniting on-screen and behind-the-camera talent at the top of their game – and an audience reception which was beyond our wildest imagining”.
“Revisiting the story of Pine also means going beyond the events of John le Carré’s original work: that is a decision we have not taken lightly, but his compelling characters and the vision David [Farr] has for their next chapter were irresistible,” they added.
Vernon Sanders, the Amazon MGM Studios head of television, added: “We are elated to bring additional seasons of The Night Manager to our Prime Video customers.
“The combination of terrific source material, the wonderful team at The Ink Factory, a great writer in David Farr, an award-winning director in Georgi Banks-Davies, as well as the talented cast truly make the series the full package.”

I Don't Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me)
I don't like the drugs but the drugs like me
I don't like the drugs, the drugs, the drugs
Norm life, baby
"We're white and oh so hetero
And our sex is missionary"
Norm life, baby
"We're quitters and we're sober
Our confessions will be televised"
You and I are underdosed and we're ready to fall
We're raised to be stupid, taught to be nothing at all
We're taught to be nothing at all
I don't like the drugs but the drugs like me
I don't like the drugs, the drugs, the drugs
I don't like the drugs but the drugs like me
I don't like the drugs, the drugs, the drugs
Norm life, baby
"Our God is white and unforgiving
And we're piss tested and we're praying"
Norm life, baby
I'm just a sample of a soul
Made to look just like a human being
Norm life, baby
"We're rehabbed and we're ready
For our 15 minutes of shame"
Norm life, baby
"We're talkshown and we're pointing
Just like Christians at a suicide"
You and I are underdosed and we're ready to fall
We're raised to be stupid, taught to be nothing at all
We're taught to be nothing at all
