#steve and gareth as secret cousins

Someone on Twitter proposed Steve and Gareth as cousins whose family had a major falling out, and then someone else brought it up recently and long story short no idea who to credit the idea too bc you can’t search for SHIT on Twitter but it's theirs not mine.
Anyway I wrote a lil thing as a warmup
PART TWO
"Why don't you come sit with Hellfire?" Gareth asked, angrily leaned against the bathroom wall while Steve fixed his hair.
He'd tried not to cling since he entered high school. Tried to keep things on the downlow, least any gossipy mouths started running.
It was so stupidly, needlessly, hard.
 His cousin was only two years ahead of him but they'd spent the last year in different schools because of it.
 That year, and the lack of Steve's presence in it, had grated. Now that he finally had Steve back, Gareth was loathe to play by the rules.
"Sit with you and Eddie, "the freak" Munson? I'll pass." Steve said, but there was no bite in it.
That, Gareth knew, was because Steve was  using Eddie as an excuse.
"You'd like Eddie if you spent five minutes with him, King Steve." Gareth fired back on automatic. His fingers dug into his arms, as he resisted the urge to pace around the bathroom floor.
Unspoken was all the shit that had taken place.
Steve and Nancy's breakup. The rumor mill in overdrive, first about how Jonathan Byers had taken creep shot photos of them, then about how he'd taken his shot with Nancy herself.
The supposed cheating, the public fights, the crazy background of Jonathan's little brother being missing.
Billy Hargrove beating Steve to a pulp.
Now friendless, Steve had thoroughly fallen from his place at the tippy top of the social hierarchy and between his utter lack of friends and his shit tier parents, Gareth was concerned.
"You do not want me to sit with you, Gary. I'd tell all your little friends that you're apart of the royal family." Steve turned, making an exaggerated face. "How's Munson feel about cozying up to a Prince?"
"I'd technically be an Earl, Steve, not a prince." Gareth grumbled.
He got an eye roll in response. "Somehow I don't think he'll care."
"I do though." Gareth blurted out, absolutely thoughtless.
Steve blinked at him.
"What?" He said.
In for a penny right?
 "I care." Gareth said, looking down and scuffing a shoe, making it squeak against the grimy tiles. "About you. You dick."
"Wow Gary you almost sounded loving there."
For once, he ignored the jab. "I'm worried about you, man." He said it quietly, the painful truth pulled out of him almost by force.
He knew better than anyone how few people Steve had. Knew how his dad was likely taking all the crap Steve had been involved in lately.
Richard Harrington hadn't been the wedge that had separated his and Steve's mother, but the man hadn't done them any favors, either.
His intolerance towards the working and lower classes, his demand for perfection, the way he looked down his nose not just on Gareth's parents but on his own wife and son…
Gareth's mom didn't tolerate it.
Likewise, Stella Harrington didn't tolerate her sister ruining her shot at being a rich trophy wife.
Both their sets of parents were dramatic and neither of them weren't anywhere near the concept of "good" but at least Gareth's weren't neglectful and abusive.
Shitty absolutely, but he never worried about getting thrown out, or that his mom wouldn't acknowledge his birthday because he'd "complimented her outfit the wrong way."
(”It's fine dude she just thought I called her ugly. It was a miscommunication. Dad said it's a good lesson about how women work."
"Casual reminder that your dad's an asshole and also how is telling your mom that she looked lovely in the sunlight telling her she's ugly?”
“It implied she wasn't lovely the rest of the time or some shit, I dunno man.”)
The BMW was a shitty prize when compared what Steve had dealt with to receive it.
"I'm okay." Steve said seriously. "It's almost the end of the year anyways. I can tough out having some extra alone time."
"If you're sure…"
"Yeah man, I'm sure. Thanks though."
Then Steve pulled him into a hug and fuck their parents, who demanded they continued some stupid grudge. Gareth clung to him just as hard as he had at ten. Unsure if he'd ever be allowed to see Steve again.

Short ABO thread, xposted to Twitter.
Secret omega Eddie is obsessed with a scent he can smell at Gareth’s house. He was worried at first it was Gareth presenting, but the scent is only near the basement sofa. Eddie wants to bury himself in the scent. He doesn’t believe in scentmates, —
But whatever this scent is smells like alphamatehome. Eddie pushes the sofa cushions around and finds a red sweater. The sweater is what smells so good. Eddie doesn’t even realize he’s putting the sweater on until Gareth asks if he’s cold.
Eddie thinks he makes an agreeing sound. “Dude there’s like 3 blankets within reach, why’d you find my cousin’s sweater?”
Eddie doesn’t answer the question, he’s gone a little feral. “Sweater. Mine. Keep.”
Gareth mutters to Jeff about not understanding why an alpha would want another’s alpha’s sweater.
Jeff shrugs, “Maybe we should get your mom? Eddie seems a little weirder than usual.”
Jeff’s known Eddie since Eddie moved to Hawkins, if he says Eddie’s being weird than usual, Gareth is going to listen. He gets up to go upstairs for his mom, but she’s already halfway down the stairs with his cousin Steve.
“Baby, Stevie says he left his sweater here earlier this week, have you seen it?”
Gareth coughs, “I’ve seen it.”
“Can you go get it for us?”
“I’m not sure I can.”
“I swear to god Gareth Ezekiel if you caught that sofa on fire again, you’re grounded til you’re 40.”
“No sofa fires.” Gareth turns to go back down and figure out how to get Eddie to give him the sweater. He doesn’t realize his mom and Steve are following until Eddie lunges at Steve growling.

Steve, Gareth and Chrissy are cousins AU (sad edition) [prologue] [part 1] [part 2] [part 3] [part 4] [part 5] [Part 6] [Part 7] [Final Part]
The saving grace for Steve here is that all eyes are on Eddie, so no one witnesses how he freezes, just for a moment, when Eddie tells them who the 'she' is he's been referring to. How he just wanted to help her. Help Chrissy. Whatever Eddie has been saying has turned to buzzing, to white noise, to nonsense in the background of his mind.
He has to be wrong. Mistaking some other girl for Chrissy. Because it can't be Chrissy. It can't. Steve has worked so hard to keep his family away from the Upside Down shit. She couldn't be- there's no way she somehow got caught up in it. There's too many questions and not enough answers and when did the air get too thick to fit in his lungs?
Does Gareth know?
Gareth, who Steve knows is one of Eddie's friends and here Eddie sits before him, a witness to Upside Down shit. A witness to a murder they have no clue how to solve. Gareth, who isn't exactly friends with Mike, Dustin, and Lucas, but who is in the same club as them and on friendly terms. That's too many people connected to the Upside Down in Gareth's personal circle for Steve to be okay with.
He thought this was done. That they wouldn't ever have to deal with this shit again.
Eddie is still talking as the pounding in Steve's ears fades and he listens as Eddie swears, he just wanted to help, that she seemed so freaked out by something, and Steve's insides twist and churn. Why hadn't Chrissy come to him? Just last week he was at her house, hanging out and catching up. She never mentioned an issue. A problem. Something that would cause her to seek out heavier drugs than weed.
They used to tell each other everything. What changed?
His stomach drops as the answer comes to him.
He did.
He'd changed. He started keeping secrets first. Pushed Chrissy and Gareth away after that first incident and hadn't really started to let them back in until after Starcourt. He'd just wanted to keep them safe. Keep them as far away from this horror as possible. He'd ended the weekend sleepovers because of his nightmares, stopped inviting them over to hang out by the pool because he can't look at it without thinking about Barb, started avoiding them at school when he'd ended up beat to shit by Billy because he knew they'd dig for more answers than he could give.
No wonder Chrissy didn't tell him anything was wrong.
There's no way for Steve to know if he could have helped or not, even if Chrissy had talked to him. Eddie doesn't have answers; just a story.
Steve hates him a little bit. It's irrational. Eddie didn't do this Chrissy, (even if he had been arguing that point at Family Video) but it doesn't stop the anger inside him from boiling up. He doesn't act on it, of course he doesn't, he's not that person anymore.
Plus, acting on it would kind of negate everything Dustin just convinced Eddie of, such as he's not crazy and they do believe him, and Steve's not about to undo what Dustin's accomplished by taking Eddie by the vest and shoving him against the wall in a reverse of earlier. It wouldn't do any good, not now that they're all sure it's a new, unknown threat from the Upside Down that they'll have to figure out on their own.
No. Taking his anger out on Eddie won't solve anything.
He can be mad about this later.
It does sit heavy on him, though, that he doesn't think anyone in this boathouse knows Chrissy was his cousin. That the Upside Down has taken someone from Steve this time. He can't tell them. Robin wouldn't take it well, and Dustin might not either. They'll be sad for him, and he can't handle that right now.
He can mourn later.
-
Remember the fun lil fic of Gareth not wanting his cousins, Chrissy Cunningham and Steve Harrington, to ruin his street cred in high school? Well, the fun is done. Have some angst. More parts will follow but it's not really a fic? Just... disjointed scenes, rewritten from canon to fit the cousin AU.

It might seem like Steve isn’t close to his family. But he is, or at least he is to his mom and her side of the family. Ever since he was little, it’s also why his family even lives in Hawkins.
His mother refuses to not have a home in her hometown, her siblings (two; an older brother and younger one) live here still. Her parents still live here, she also has an aunt that lives down the street who is Steve’s favorite person (before knowing Robin or Dustin or Eddie) and Steve has cousins in town either the a few years older or younger than him.
Anyway, point is Steve has family and is close with them. Even if his friends don’t know.
It’s not a secret, his family are busy and they keep in contact as much as possible. His Uncles call weekly, his grandparents host a family breakfast every Sunday. His dad is a workaholic and isn’t in town ever, but his mom? She’s there and a social butterfly, that’s why his house seems empty every time his friends crash over. His baby cousins are why he always acts annoyed about babysitting The Party. He’s the go-to babysitter in the family, his baby cousins absolutely love him.
The only reason none of his friends realize this, is last names. Harrington is his father’s name, they’re the only ones in Hawkins with it.
Nancy obviously met his parents when they were dating, she didn’t get along with his dad at all. She and his mom liked each other. (Because of all the Upside Down problems, she never got to see Family Breakfasts. Then Halloween and well, we all know what happened)
Robin ends up meeting his grandparents after Starcount, they saw the fire on the news and immediately went to his house, hoping he wasn’t at the mall. Obviously that hope is gone the minute they pull into the driveway and find Steve’s car gone. A few hours later, Steve stumbled in with Robin tucked under his arm. They worry and fuss over him all while Robin stands back in near shock. (She’s later included to all family breakfasts, she gets the shock of a lifetime to see which classmates are related to him at the first one)
Dustin, Lucas and Mike unfortunately meet his cousin Andy because of Jason Carver. Andy isn’t close with Steve, not anymore at least. The only reason he found out is when the boys are complaining about it. He doesn’t necessarily tell them immediately about knowing who Andy is. He does confront Andy the next time he’s over at his uncle’s. (The boys only find this out because Andy’s little sister runs straight to Steve while they’re at the arcade)
Max finds out through the boys about Andy. But she also meets his uncle, he’s her primary doctor after what happens with Vecna. Steve was passed out in her room when his uncle came in. (Max found out months later, when she wakes up)
Eddie ends up meet his whole family only three months into dating each other. He’s not shocked to see Andy, having been told by Dustin (kid can’t keep a secret). Eddie is loved by nearly everyone, Andy’s sister won’t leave him alone. Saying “if Stevie likes you, you MUST be cool!” And he’s all kinds of smug about it. Steve’s mom loves him, having already met him when Steve admitted the relationship to her. His grandparents don’t quite understand but they still at least like Eddie and don’t treat him like shit. (They weren’t in town during the whole witch-hunt, steve’s uncles are iffy about him but are polite.)
Much later, Steve’s friends confront him on why they didn’t know. Steve just shrugs and used the different last names line on them. Also tells them his mom can be a lot, ya know?
~~~~~~
A world building experience into if Steve has more family. There’s plot-holes and things don’t quite make sense but this literally started all around “what if Steve was close with his mom?”
For a moment I was gonna make Jason his cousin but decided it’s too on the nose, ya know? Also typed Gareth into being the cousin but that didn’t feel right.
This was supposed to be just a small headcanon 😅
Cousin Buckley: Part 6 (NOT the end!)
Summary: With the help of Dusty Bun, you finally choose who you want to be with 💜🖤
Warnings: mention of the skinned knee again, otherwise fluff central!
Word count: ~2.2k
See my masterlist for parts 1-5! My about me is also up now 🤗
A/N: THIS IS IT FOLKS! Y/N decides who she’ll be with after the first cut, then another cut for the alternate ending 😁 Also, fun fact: this was originally going to be one post then a small blurb for Steve and one for Eddie 😆 I’m so happy it turned into this!!!
Tumblr media
Dustin looked in horror at Eddie’s frustrated and flustered face, but he had a mission. He was selected to break the bad news because, apparently, Eddie got angry at him the least. Today’s news was going to be tough, and it seemed to Dustin that the present situation wouldn’t be helping.
“Hi, Eddie,” he said slowly as Eddie huffed.
“Yeah, hi, what do you want?” Eddie chewed the inside of his cheek, leaning against the doorframe.
“I… came to deliver some news?” Dustin questioned himself and Eddie scoffed, standing up.
“Harrington put you up to this, didn’t he?”
“Wait, what?” Dustin asked. “No, no, Eddie, Steve didn’t send me! Gareth did. Hellfire business,” he said quietly.
“What’s Hellfire?” you interjected.
“It’s my Dungeons and Dragons club,” Eddie said quietly, his voice softening at the sound of yours.
“Oh,” you said.
“Do you play?” Dustin looked at you excitedly.
“Me? Oh, no, I don’t, sorry,” you smiled awkwardly. “I’m Y/N, by the way,” you said, extending your hand. He shook it energetically.
“I’m Dustin Henderson, Eddie’s best friend!”
Eddie glared at Dustin, a bit of a smile peeking through. You looked at Eddie for confirmation, smiling widely yourself, and he shook his head, his signature grin finally breaking through.
“Sometimes I wish he was wrong, but it’s true. This is the best buddy I’ve got,” Eddie smirked, pulling Dustin in by his head. “So, what’s the news?”
“Well, you’re not gonna like it,” Dustin started.
“Just tell me,” Eddie sighed. “I promise I’ll keep cool.”
“O-kay, well, for Hellfire, Lucas and Gareth aren’t available.”
You heard Eddie muffle a frustrated sound, instead making more of a high-pitched squeak. He held his hand in the air, making a tight fist, then pulled it back to his forehead, lips pursed.
“And… why not?” he labored, trying to stay calm.
“Well, Lucas is sick, and so is Erica,” Dustin explained as Eddie took a sharp breath in. “And Gareth has a family dinner he can’t miss.”
“How,” Eddie squinted harder, “how… how? I need a minute,” Eddie turned to face the other way. “Gimme a minute, I gotta make some calls. Who else, who else, who else…” he began to murmur to himself. Meanwhile, Dustin looked back at you.
“Are you Eddie’s girlfriend?” he asked happily.
“Not exactly,” you smiled. “We met this week, I’m Robin’s cousin. Do you know her?”
“Know her? She’s the best, I love her! I first met her when she worked with Steve at Scoops Ahoy.”
“Oh, so are you and Steve close?” you asked, wanting to pry a bit.
“Yeah, he’s my best friend!” Dustin boasted. “He’s the coolest guy I’ve ever met.”
“I thought Eddie was your best friend,” you smirked.
“Oh,” Dustin hesitated. “Well, Steve used to be, but I spend a lot more time with Eddie now. But I love them equally!” he held his hands up in defense. “Just… differently.”
“Well, can I let you in on a little secret?” you asked, still smirking. Dustin nodded, leaning closer.
“They both like me,” you said, and Dustin’s eyes went wide. “And they’re both great guys, as we both obviously know,” you waved your hand between him and yourself, making Dustin nod excessively. “But the question is, who should I date?”
You were obviously messing around with Dustin, but a small part of you thought he was your chance to see the best in both boys, and maybe even the worst. You definitely had more feelings for one of the boys, but you didn’t want to admit it just yet. Dating made you nervous, wary, and you had only known the boys for less than a week. Dustin could confirm your feelings or completely upturn them, but it was worth the risk.
Dustin’s face was currently pale. He opened his mouth, then closed it. He narrowed his eyes and pointed a finger at you.
“Are you messing with me?” he asked skeptically.
“Maybe… totally,” you admitted. Dustin looked at you blankly, then lit up with a bright smile.
“I love this, let’s make it like a game show! Who will win Y/N’s heart?” he said dramatically.
“Um, okay,” you chuckled, trying to go along with his enthusiasm. “How are we gonna do that?”
“Well, I guess I’d have to know you better to really tell you,” Dustin shrugged. “They’re both great guys. Steve is definitely more… maternal? I guess? Like, if you said you were hungry, Steve would cook for you, but Eddie would order you a pizza, but like your favorite pizza.”
“A home-cooked meal does sound nice,” you admitted.
“Okay, so point for Steve! Eddie likes fantasy stuff a lot more, how do you feel about that?”
“It’s fine, I guess,” you said. “I’ve read The Lord of the Rings series before, does that count?”
“It most definitely does!” Dustin practically yelled. “Eddie loves that stuff! So, you like reading?”
“I do,” you smiled.
“Point for Eddie. Oh, I need a pen.”
After a couple more rounds, Eddie came back with a list of people’s names, most of them scratched out. He was rubbing his head.
“Okay, Henderson, I made some calls, and I--what are you doing?”
“Just getting to know Y/N more,” Dustin said casually. Eddie snatched the memo pad out of his hands.
“Likes home-cooked meals, reading, metal music, mall shopping, strawberry ice cream, pineapple on pizza?”
“It’s delicious,” you argued.
“Who did you find?” Dustin interrupted, hoping to change the subject.
“I’m canceling tonight.”
“What? Why?” Dustin pouted.
“Well, while I was calling Wheeler to see if he had anyone in mind, he told me that his girlfriend is coming over, so he can’t. I asked him if he knew anyone who could fill in, and he said no. I called the other guys, and basically, Henderson, it’s a no go. I’m sorry, man, but summer’s been hard to plan Hellfire. I know I’ve got to train you, but I can’t without a full party.”
Eddie pulled Dustin to his side and gave him a few pats. By this time, Eddie’s demeanor had completely changed. He looked like a caring older brother who hated to let his little brother down. The way Dustin sunk into the side hug showed he felt the same way.
“No worries, Eddie,” Dustin sighed, then saw your caring face. “You know,” he said, a little louder now, “I really appreciate how supportive you are of me, and how your hugs make me feel so warm inside.”
“What?” Eddie chuckled, pushing Dustin away.
“You just have some great qualities,” Dustin shrugged, then not-so-subtly winked at you. Eddie blushed, laughing a bit more.
“You’re a killer wingman, Henderson.”
“A killer what now?”
Steve was standing in the doorway with his hands on his hips, glaring at Dustin, who was now pale, mouth agape.
“Uhhh, ummm…” Steve raised his eyebrows, continuing to stare down the stuttering Dustin.
“Steve is amazing!” Dustin blurted out, making both boys hold their nose bridges.
“Come on, man,” Eddie sighed, leaving to sit down. Steve closed the front door, following Eddie and shaking his head. As he passed you, he turned to you with a kind look.
“He’s got good intentions... somewhere,” he tried to explain. “How’s your knee?”
“It’s okay, thanks,” you looked down at it. “It stings a little more today.”
“That shouldn’t happen,” Steve said, looking down at your knee with concern. “Here, come sit.”
You sat down as Steve crouched beside you, peeling some of the bandaid back to look at it.
“It looks like it’s healing,” he said. “Maybe it’s just that you’re using it more today or something,” he concluded, then kissed his finger and pressed it to the bandage like he did yesterday.
“How are you otherwise?” he looked up at you.
“I’m fine,” you smiled. “And you?”
“I’m good. I just came by because Robin needed something she left in her other vest. I can’t stay,” he said with a sad look.
“We can catch up later,” you smiled, which he returned, then left to Robin’s room.
“What were you thinking for lunch?” Eddie asked, scooting closer to you.
“I don’t know,” you said, looking at him. “Maybe we can get burgers or something?”
“That sounds good to me,” Eddie smiled. “Let me just get rid of him,” he whispered, making you giggle.
“Alright, kids, I’m off,” Steve said as he jogged down the stairs. “Y/N, I’ll be dropping Robin off tonight, so any movie requests?”
“Something funny,” you smiled. “Surprise me.”
“Sounds good. Bye, you guys,” Steve said as he left. When he closed the door, you looked back at Eddie.
“Shall we?” you held out your hand, which Eddie grabbed.
“We shall. Beat it, Henderson,” he said jokingly, then softened. “I’m sorry about tonight, we’ll make it up.”
“No worries, man,” Dustin grinned. “Have a good day,” he sang, winking at you again.
Dustin got up to leave, mind occupied with his observations of the three of you. He could tell that Eddie and Steve obviously cared for you, and he could see how you looked at each of them. Even though he had just met you, he saw the difference between how you responded to each boy. As he thought through your actions, the way you made eye contact, the tone of your voice, his eyes went wide and he stopped on the sidewalk.
“It’s him!”
🖤💜🖤
“Sorry about that,” Eddie smiled as he closed the door, a bit embarrassed.
“Don’t worry about it, he seems sweet,” you said.
“So,” he said, turning around, hands in his pockets. “We sort of left off on an important moment.”
“We did,” you said, blushing a bit. “Come here,” you patted the couch. He sat down beside you, looking into your eyes hopefully.
“Eddie,” you said, grabbing his hands. “I-I actually don’t know what to say. When we first met, I thought you were goofy and funny, and that you’d be an amazing friend. I was proved right on all of those points, but, as this week has gone by, I realized that there’s something more.”
Eddie gulped and looked down, breath a little shaky. He smiled, then looked back at you. He held your hands in his, playing with your fingers.
“And Harrington?” he asked nervously.
“Steve is sweet, and he’s a great guy, but he’s not who I want to be with. Everything you said before… I feel the same way. When I look at you, my heart feels like it’s being lifted, and my stomach gets all fluttery. It’s cliche, like you said, but I think that’s what makes it so wonderful and real. You get to the point that you feel like you’re never gonna have what people have in movies, but I think that’s just an excuse to give up. That feeling, it’s real. When I’m with you, it’s real.”
Eddie’s eyes met yours and he breathed in deeply, then licked his lips. He blinked quickly, taking another deep breath as he leaned towards you. He placed a hand softly on your jaw and kissed your lips, breaking the space between you two. You held his cheek as you leaned into the kiss, brow furrowing. It was soft, careful, innocent, but overwhelmed with finally-fulfilled emotions. As you broke away, Eddie rested his forehead on yours, breathing out slowly. He kissed your lips again quickly, then smiled widely.
“Thanks for picking me,” he gushed.
“Any day,” you smiled, kissing his forehead.
✨Don’t like the way it ended? Read on!✨
“Sorry about that,” Eddie said as he walked back in. “He can be a little embarrassing at times.”
“Don’t worry, he seems fun,” you smiled. Eddie looked over at you as you touched your bandaid, blushing. Eddie nodded slowly, then breathed in.
“Y/N?” you looked up. “What I said before, I-I don’t think you feel the same way. Am I right?”
You looked up at Eddie sadly. You didn’t want to hurt him, but he was right. You had fallen for Steve Harrington.
“Eddie, I’m so sorry,” you began, but Eddie smiled softly at you.
“Don’t worry about it, Y/N, really. I get it. He’s a stud. Thank you for being honest with me.”
“Thank you for understanding,” you said, standing up to give him a quick hug. “Can we still be friends?”
“Of course we can,” Eddie chuckled. “As long as you’re still taking me to the Metallica concert, cuz you may think Harrington's cute, but he’d be a drag.”
You laughed as you playfully hit Eddie’s arm. “I wouldn’t dream of taking anyone else, Munson. Like I said before, I really do think we’re gonna be best friends.”
“Sounds good to me,” he smirked. “And hey, so what if I find my future best friend gorgeously attractive? It’ll just be a perk.”
“Uh huh, sure,” you laughed.
“So, let’s go get some lunch and then find you something breathtaking to wear when you admit your feelings to Steve tonight.”
To be continued!!!
Favorite Podcasts 2016
I have a data entry job in a lab processing bodily fluids. I hate the monotonous job, but one perk of the job is I get to listen to podcasts 40 hours/week,  time flies by, and I feel somewhat productive.
PERSONAL OPINIONS… -podcasts are best done between 2 people, preferably comedian friends. Sometimes, there can be too many cooks in the kitchen (Filmdrunk Frotcast, for instance, runs into this) -it’s usually best in person: you can sense that in some podcasts where they do it via Skype or on the phone -I avoid local sports talk radio like the plague—so you don’t get blowhards with hot takes/talking points where they have to have controversy to get ratings. Generally, everybody on podcasts gets along, it’s natural, funnier, and doesn’t fill hours. -while I don’t think some of these podcast comedians will ever become household names, they are doing some of the best work out there that’s ever been done comedically. It’s like Howard Stern and what Chris Rock said and I’m going to fuck this up: he might be the funniest person of all time if you compile what he did into a single hour. I feel like you could do these with a LOT of people. But they never will. -you listen long enough, it should feel like a friendship you are a part of. You know the people, get the inside jokes, and enjoy the banter. -best episodes tend to run 60 minutes or less—otherwise, it can get real bloated.
BEST EPISODES -End of World Election Night (Joe Rogan)—Bill Burr steals the live show from Stanhope, Rogan, Kreischer, etc—tour de force that came out the night of the Election while shit was going down. Burr is going for pure humor and some guests come on who have an issue with how he views things in a blunt, fair way where everything gets shit on and everything sucks: but, at the end of the day, his life is not going to be ruined. What I like about Burr is this: he will say awful things that you don’t agree with...but by the end you are on his side and laughing with him. -600 Dollar Podcast-‘Voyeur Motel’—Halpern reads out Gay Talese’s story of a guy who ran a hotel and had a secret viewing station set up above every guest’s bed and he would watch people have sex. It’s creepy, but here? Funny as hell. The ‘Back to the Future’ joke Halpern quickly gives almost made me crash on the Mass. Pike -Dollop/My Favorite Murder crossover-‘Otto in the Attic’ -Dollop does a murder w/ My Favorite Murder as guests. It is wild. -Dollop-‘Bundy 2: Oregon Takeover’ –one of the first Dollops was about Cliven Bundy, the anti-government rancher. This time, his kids took over Oregon—and, most recently, they went unpunished despite a takeover with guns. Just unreal. -Pardon My Take-‘Cat Killer Michael Rappaport’ (first part interview goes for 15 minutes or so) -Justin Halpern’s Papa Roach story on Frotcast—I was in tears at work listening to this. It helps to have been of age when Papa Roach was a thing in the late 90′s/early 2000s (Filmdrunk Frotcast; 3:30 mark on the ‘Best of 2016’: 90 second story basically)
BILL BURR’s Monday Morning Podcast (funniest comic alive mostly does a 1-man rant by himself) 2 episodes a week—1 of which is half throwback episodes
I don’t get how Burr does it: it should be impossible for Burr to carry a podcast each week by himself for an hour, but he does. He rambles for an hour, takes listener e-mail. He is THE only person I listen to advertisement readings for: he somehow makes that funny, shits on the ads who sometime remove them. But it’s like listening to a guy workshop some material and improve himself in small ways as a comic.
I will say this though: when somebody else enters the podcast, it becomes funnier. His wife, Nia. He can play ball with and you can sense him having an audience and naturally be funnier. 600 Dollar Podcast: a comedy podcast between 3 comedians/writers who talk about marriage & raising kids—but it’s totally not that at all and always goes AWOL 1 episode per week—but hasn’t been one in months Horrible title for a show—started off as ‘Wild’n’Out Without Nick Cannon’ but they got a cease and desist from Cannon’s lawyer.
Justin Halpern (Shit My Dad Says), Tommy Jonaghan (breakout guy of the show and a stand-up) and Patrick Monaghan (another TV writer)
This podcast has come the closest since Walking the Room to genuinely making me laugh out loud each week. Consistently. Great and funny stories of failure. Fucked up in the best way and goes FAR down the rabbit hole of topics.
BEST EPISODES…. #7-‘Voyeur Motel’ (Halpern’s Back to the Future joke) #11-‘It’s Called a Vagina’ (when Halpern loses his shit at the 10:15 mark) Dollop (two comedians: American history read to a friend who has no idea what the topic is about. Point is, you realize America has NEVER been great and it’s supremely and endlessly fucked up) Walking the Room is my favorite podcast ever. Laugh-out loud funny friendship and THE best and funniest take on unending failure and, like Patton Oswalt said, being a shit-magnet for people/things. They do live reunion ones once a year—and they generally suck and aren’t the same but I’ll take what I can get. Anyways, that podcast is over—and the Dollop, a history, took over as Dave Anthony’s main thing (He’ll do conversations with Wil Anderson on TOFOP/FOFOP that are fun and closest to Walking the Room, but it’s not the same: he’s much more relaxed/normal whereas Dave was putting on a face as someone who hated his goofy friend, Greg, part of the time and was angrier than he was—and if you follow him on Twitter, he is comically angry and outspoken)
Sometimes, the Dollop can be hit-or-miss and I tune out a bit. Within first couple minutes, I can tell if it’s going to be amazing. Gareth can improv too much at times—but when it’s on, it’s on. They’re incredibly quick and it never tires how incredulous Gareth can get to the stories to Dave’s sarcastic, nonchalant storytelling while EVERYTHING that is happening is fucked up.
I think if they could make a lot of these Dollops into movies, they would be amazing. Some Mel Brooks-ian shit. I would rather see the Dollop’s version of Hugh Glass than Leonardo DiCaprio’s version in ‘the Revenant’. The show got a nod of the head in the ‘Tickled’ documentary.
But my jaw drops at American history I didn’t know about—or to its extent—and then laugh hard. Some of it is minimal characters/events that are just funny—others are wildly serious or show parallels to today.
BEST EPISODES… -‘Otto in the Attic’ (crossover live w/ My Favorite Murder) -‘Bundy 2: Oregon Takeover’ (anything involving Cliven Bundy’s family and their anti-government militia) -Black Panther Fred Hampton’ (not a funny one—but a guy I never heard of who should have been up there with MLK/Malcolm X had he not been assassinated by the FBI/American government) -‘Girl Watchers’ -‘Domino’s Pizza Story’ -‘Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo’ (pre-Trump guy) -‘Boston Busing ’74 & ’75 PT 1 & 2’
All-Time? ‘the Rube’ is the best in a runaway or me. ‘Purity Ring’, Tickled, Hugh Glass, some of the earlier ones are great.
IF YOU LIKE THIS: history’; Drunk History comedy…My Favorite Murder My Favorite Murder (true crime—one comic and her affable friend read 1 true crime murder to each other) 1 episode per week; 90 minutes-ish
True crime is all the rage—so it makes sense as to why this podcast has become insanely popular. It might be easy to shit on, in a morbid way, to go over murders in a ‘fan’ way: but it’s the same way movies/TV shows/news each night centers around murders. The show might glorify people—but there’s a common bent/theme around certain killers and their upbringings—or possible life-saving life mottos (‘fuck politeness’). I can see the show doing more positive things, giving $ to rape kits being tested (how the fuck was that NOT a thing?!?!)
I was aware of Karen Kilgarif because Dave Anthony dated her and she was a guest on Walking the Room. But it’s AMAZING when people you are vaguely aware of find their own avenue. And become stars in their own right—and people you look forward to hearing each week.
Her friend, Georgina, is just as easily likable. DEFINITELY comes across like a gossiping girly-girl (I heard that criticism), but she’s so damn cool, genuinely funny, and cute (even before I saw how pretty she was—there’s no way to describe it and you can sense it with how Karen adores/views her). It could be a really dour show OR droning in the wrong hands, but they make the topic rightfully serious but fun simultaneously in the best way. It is respectful to the victims.
But yeah, they read Wikipedia entries to each other and bring in a heavily-informed obsession to the podcast. But it’s the humor and chemistry that helps saves the show in tone. It’s not as heavily-researched as the Dollop or formatted in a natural storytelling bent, but it’s successful.
KEY EPISODES…. -Live from LA Podfest (crossover with Dave Anthony of the Dollop) -Chicago Podfest (changing point for the show: you realize that they are massive in this episode in ways they didn’t expect—with a rabid fanbase) IF YOU LIKE THIS: you’ll like the Dollop
PARDON MY TAKE (sports podcasts) 3 episodes per week; 60 minutes each I want to slap myself in the face listening to this—because these are the two best young, likable stars in comedy/sports. IT IS HARD TO DO SPORTS COMEDY DONE SUCCESSFULLY BECAUSE PEOPLE TAKE IT TO SERIOUSLY! Big Cat comes across like Jimmy Kimmel; PFTCommenter, however, steals the show—and he’s incomparable (maybe Stephen Colbert for being able to stay in character?): basically he’s born out of ‘hot-take’ culture and mocking it. There’s a format to the show, some interviews, segments.
Yes, it’s part of the Barstool Sports empire—run by douchebags (a friend of mine is cousins with Portnoy—tried getting an autograph for her boyfriend who loved Barstool Sports, he refused), but forget that.
LAUGH OUT LOUD… -Stingray Steve calls the fall of the Berlin Wall (a southern college football fan—they get him to announce each week’s big plays; when they FINALLY get him to call a key moment in history, I lost my shit at work) -Jimbo of the Week (mailbag fails from readers) -Monday Mornings after NFL games where they mimic Chris Berman’s recaps of the games
BEST EPISODE… -Catkiller Michael Rapaport (Rapaport is an actor/personality easy to shit on—but he comes across great as a podcast guest on Bill Simmons, Bill Burr, Pardon My Take: he’s game)—September 6th -Marlins Man/Foul Ball Fan (July 6th) -Martin Shkreli –when they shit on him; it’s interesting to hear them be affable/likable/funny with people they clearly hate. Marlins Man & this episode are pretty great interviews to hear how naturally funny they are, easy to get along with, even while still getting jokes in at people they hate. It’s not easy.
TOFOP & FOFOP (Australian comedian and funny actor friend poke at mostly American pop culture) -Charlie Clausen is the co-host on TOFOP -FOFOP gets its name from the show ‘Fringe’: it’s ‘Faux-TOFOP’, typically with American comedians. Dave Anthony is the best guest for FOFOP.
Wil Anderson is an Australian comic—he’s ridiculously affable, charming, and naturally funny. This is my closest substitute for Walking the Room, in a way, with its chemistry between two comics. It doesn’t come close, but that’s fine. I don’t get all the Australian references (rugby, pop culture, politics), but I don’t need to as an American—because America dominates just about every episode.
Clausen, on TOFOP, is damn likable. I can’t say enough about how naturally great Anderson/Clausen are on podcasts. It’s not just the accents that do it.
BEST EPISODES… -#263-‘Should I Go Home?’ : post-election w/ Dave Anthony I don’t think that’s right, but I’ve laughed out loud with pop culture breakdowns like Game of Thrones, Westworld, or shitting on Zach Snyder Batman/Superman movies in the funniest way I’ve heard (miles funnier than Filmdrunk-but no real format to the show) Inactives: NFL talk, fantasy football…and some parenting
In a just world, Matt Ufford should be a mammoth sports media star alongside Katie Nolan. He’s likable, outspoken, funny—plus he’s a military veteran/Captain in the Iraq War (though he does not come across as that).
So yeah, an NFL podcast with Ufford (Seahawks fan) and Nick Stevens (Pats/Star Wars fan and stand-up comedian). Stevens should be easy to hate as a stereotype of a Boston sports fan—but he’s naturally funny and likable, quick with jokes/takes on a spot.
The first episodes of 2015 are great for Matt’s all-time depressing Wal-Mart riff and Stevens’ reaction or Stevens bringing up the Butt Fumble that made me cry laughing—and Ufford lost his shit.
Also, I’ve NEVER done fantasy sports, but I still enjoy the show—most NFL show (NFL Ringer; Simmons; Barnwell) aren’t funny, have chemistry, and maybe too nerdy—this is wildly funny, enjoyable.
YOU’LL LIKE THIS: football, comedy, Star Wars
Filmdrunk Frotcast: Pop Culture, Movies, Comedy As I said, sometimes this show can have too many cooks in the kitchen. There can be 4-6 people on the show sometimes—some of whom aren’t funny or interesting like Laremy, Lindy West. Matt Lieb grew on me heavily. I found him unfunny and someone who comes across as funnier than they think and the other people on the show let him do his thing, don’t cut him off, laugh too hard, or know what to do. But he’s become a centerpiece of the show and now I don’t mind it. I dig Brendan, Joe Sincilito, and some other dude that’s been on more of late But Lieb does not really have an equal comedically to play with him, so he feels very much like an excited dog who just wants to play but could use another dog to play with. Horrible analogy, but feels right.
The show—and Uproxx, in general—hits on topics I am VERY familiar with and want to hear discussed. I hardly tend to agree with Vince Mancini’s tastes and sometimes opinions—he’s more of a critic than a comic. Lieb mostly looks for pure comedic bents and can derail the podcast, in a good way.
KEY GUESTS: Justin Halpern, PFTCommenter, Matt Ufford, Joe Sincilito SONG: Matt Lieb’s ‘Corporate Birthday’
BEST EPISODE: ‘Best of 2016’ (as an entry point, it does a good job capturing what the show does—love it or leave it. So lots of Lieb improv and made-up songs on the spot inbetween conversations)
REVISIONIST HISTORY: MALCOLM GLADWELL 10 episodes total (on hiatus)
Heavily organized and produced. I avoid boring This American Life podcasts like the plague, but Gladwell does that a bit—but better here. It’s interesting.
Best episodes: ‘Satire Paradox’; ‘Lady Vanishes’..the 3-part college episodes is an obsession and interesting political/social axe that Gladwell has to grind.
RECOMMENDED: if you like Malcolm Gladwell’s books even a little—this is otherworldly as an investigative podcast piece. It should NOT be this damn good. BILL SIMMONS (mostly sports) 2 episodes/week; 60-80 minutes each He gets shit on fairly—and sometimes over-the-top unfairly. He has a tired schtick and thoughts, a HORRIBLE voice (the opening segments on his TV show were due to be a disaster), unfunny. I don’t know how to say it: someone like Justin Halpern has a HORRIBLE voice—but he transcends that because he’s so goddamn funny. With that said, he’s talented, inspired/broke the door open for a lot of people, is a good podcast host, easy/affable enough to listen to, and has good taste. I don’t think his friends are funny or worthwhile  (House; Cousin Sal) but I enjoy Jack-O. Mike Lombardi is painfully bad—but I have to sit through it as a die-hard Pats fan since he was in the Pats organization until just a couple months ago. But he gets damn good guests every now and then.
BEST GUESTS/EPISODES: Michael Rapaport, Gladwell, Wesley Morris, Al Michaels, Robert Smigel, Jay Glazer; Key & Peele, Chris Sacca, etc, etc COMMON SENSE w/ DAN CARLIN (a historian rants about politics in a focused way) Carlin is like Burr—he does a podcast by himself for an hour and rambles a bit. Difference is, there is not a single funny bone to Carlin’s body. I agree with Filmdrunk: Carlin comes across like a Right Wing radio host in how he talks—but he’s utterly brilliant. He’s the best guy to break down history in today’s terms. I subscribe more to his thinking as a leftist political-minded person.
I still need to check out ‘Hardcore History’: I hear that’s the shit, but I don’t have time for 12-16 hour anthology pieces. I started listening to ‘Wrath of Khan’ and it’s insane, thorough, well-researched and great storytelling. It’s daunting though.
RECOMMENDED: History/political buffs—with leftist-minded thinking and rambling HOUND TALL: Educational live comedy show where an expert  talks about something and comics engage in it in a panel Basically, an expert comes in (a pimp; a woman who was in a harem; Science; Religion; etc) and a panel of comedians riff on that in a loose way. Moshe is brilliant as a host and he has good comedic guests (Pete Holmes; Joe DeRosa; John Mulaney; Natasha Legerro, etc)
SUGGEST IF YOU LIKE: education, in a weird way HANNIBAL BURRESS: HANDSOME RAMBLER Podcast is in early stages. Mainly it’s just Hannibal and his DJ chilling while Hannibal fucks around with autotune at times. He’s been having more conversations with guests lately (Chance the Rapper, for one)
Episode 2—Hannibal’s experience with Air B’n’B’s JOE ROGAN 3 episodes per week—3-4 hours each The podcast simply goes on for FAR too long (3-4 hours) and the topics meander far down the rabbit hole. But, if you’re like me and have the time, you don’t mind having to listen to a 3-4 hour conversation.
Rogan is a far-out dude, gets shit on for his opinions, lifestyle (Hunting & MMA most likely), and politically correct people (it’s overblown). But he’s an open and fair-minded dude, even if I don’t agree with him.
He’s kind of similar to Pete Holmes: long conversations, deep person—except Pete’s is maybe more focused with questions that come up in every podcast (it’s a funnier version of WTF with Marc Maron) and Holmes is just plain goofier and naturally funny. Rogan is mostly an intense dude—who has more life experience, hobbies, and skills.
BEST EPISODE: End of the World election night podcast Bill Burr steals the show from everybody, including Doug Stanhope. It’s unreal.
OTHER GUESTS: Bill Burr, Dan Carlin, Hannibal Burress, Neal Brennan
Pete Holmes: You Made it Weird (funnier, goofier, deeper Marc Maron conversations) Burr is the funniest comic alive—but Pete is probably the most insanely likable; they both should be massive. Burr does the best panel work on a night show: he’s an angry, loveable, opinionated dude, pushes buttons in a playful way. Holmes is a DEEP-thinking guy—who just is universally likable. Even his face, it’s goofy and instantly funny.
BEST GUESTS… Moshe Kasher (recent); Garry Shandling (month before he died)
SUGGEST IF YOU LIKE THIS: WTF w/ Marc Maron—if Maron was funny/looser/goofier in his interviews
WTF W/ Marc Maron Hardly interviews comics anymore since he’s nearly interviewed them all. I don’t bother to check out as much. He hasn’t had as much good interviews this year. I’ve seen him live, I think, 6 times (and 2 podcast tapings that were in Boston: first one was the best by far)
But reason why his podcast is great is that Marc isn’t a whole person, he’s finding himself—and you can sense he’s trying to make himself better and find himself with the people he’s interviewing. He’s looking for grace, understanding, and just being a better person.
Also, everybody skips the openings to all his podcasts—and just cut to the interview.
BEST INTERVIEWS… Robert Kelly (underrated: might be one of the funniest people I’ve seen live—his own podcast has great moments: him w/ Burr, DeRosa, Kreischer on Bertcast was amazing) Louis CK; Jeff Goldblum
CHAPO TRAP HOUSE Caught this only in the last week.
The Ben Shapiro takedown in the last episode of the year was great (they read passages from his awful book of the extreme conservative writer. Helps to know who he is in a way)
SUGGESTED EPISODE… -Post-Election breakdown ‘We Live in the Zone Now’: My thoughts exactly as a lefty on the election & state of politics
OPIE RADIO Anytime they release a Patrice O’Neal, Bill Burr, Louis CK, or Robert Kelly oldies, it’s special. Some of the most brutal and funny comedy ever was done on Opie & Anthony. A show as PACKED with people as, say, Filmdrunk Frotcast could use is actual comedians who are mostly all on the same level ‘funny’ as each other. Except the main thing with this show is that they bust balls in the cruelest way. Endlessly. With that said, you can easily hate the fans of the show and hate Anthony Cumia’s politics and how far-right/distant he has become (got fired from the show)—and still recognize how brilliant he was as a host. There’s a treasure trove of amazing material on Opie that you can put up with the best comedy ever. It’s the original podcast and when they re-release old shit, it’s a goldmine.
-We’ll See You in Hell w/ Joe Derosa (2 friends talk movies and shit on each other for liking or not liking certain movies: it’s Roger & Ebert basically) Derosa has a mostly HORRIBLE taste in movies.
I don’t think I could recommend this podcast to anybody unless you’ve heard him on a podcast with Pete Holmes, Bill Burr, Hound Tall, or Opie. Pete Holmes would 100% be the best (Pete’s podcast to hear Pete’s impression of Joe, Hound Tall) and Burr would be great to see how easily Burr shits on him. Otherwise, you’d just view him as an unlikable asshole.
Derosa has a couple albums out and they’re worthwhile. But there is one that he recorded that went AWOL and the crowd absolutely was drunk and derailed his special, so Joe went with, trashed his special, and just went off on the audience trashing them. It’s amazing. It’s “You Will Die” and it’s the second part of the special that was recorded and meant to be the special.
COULD GIVE UP ON AND BE COOL -Bill Barnwell (NFL podcast) -NFL Ringer -the Watch (TV/movies)
Only because I’m a big football/TV/movie fan—the hosts aren’t very good, funny, interesting or standout. I think they are good, straight-forward writers though (all formerly of Grantland). I listen to these episodes at 2x speed to make them go by faster. OVERRATED PODCASTS -Keeping It 1600 Politics podcasts from people who worked for Obama as policy advisor & speechwriter. They get insider guests/journalists. Sure, it’s mildly interesting to hear them go over current events—but it’s ultimately forgettable. Kind of smug. Jokes aren’t funny. They are inoffensive dudes and centrists. It’s a podcast for water-carrying establishment Democrats generally and I think they are blind to see at how limp and ineffectual their party is and why that is so. I guess the podcast that came after the election is interesting to listen to—and how shocked they were. They never thought it would happen—and they never thought Hillary was a horrible candidate.
I’d say the Ringer podcasts (the Watch; Simmons) the people who host the podcasts are NOT funny people at all. There’s laughter going on, but it’s never made by funny people. I like Simmons, but I can’t defend him being naturally funny the way he would like to be.
SUGGESTION: listen to Wil Anderson, an Australian comic, alongside Dave Anthony cover politics on FOFOP. I started listening to Chapo Trap House-that’s better than Keeping it 1600 and what I wanted in a politics podcast MOST DISAPPOINTING PODCASTS -Serial season 2—checked out after a couple episodes. It tried something new and failed miserably. -Deadcast –Drew Magary is the funniest online writer for a decade now, but he comes across as obnoxious and loud on podcasts. Tim Marchman? A boring contrarian killjoy. They go over topics I enjoy hearing about though, but I gave up. Also, they do it via Skype, so it misses some chemistry of podcasts that do it in person.
DON’T LISTEN TO ENOUGH BUT THINK ARE GOOD -Chelsea Peretti (Bill Burr episode is great—but that podcast has like 3 episodes a year) -Guys We Fucked -My Brother My Brother & Me (3 brothers, comedy—and I heard their Dungeons & Dragons podcast Adventure Zone is great—but I’m not into that game) -Sklarbro Country (Sports + comedy) -Todd Glass (Patton Oswalt as a guest was amazing a year or so ago)
PODCASTS I PLAN ON CHECKING OUT MORE IN 2017 -Chapo’s Trap House -Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History
Steve and Gareth as cousins warm up, part two!
First part is HERE.
Next part is HERE.
Reminder: Someone on Twitter proposed Steve and Gareth as cousins whose family had a major falling out, and then someone else brought it up recently and long story short no idea who to credit the idea too bc you can’t search for SHIT on Twitter but it's theirs not mine.
Warnings: Steve and Robin Get (canon-S3) Drugged.
"I'm just saying the other theater is cheaper." Eddie said around the straw jammed in his mouth.
He carried the largest bucket of popcorn Starcourt’s movie theater offered, alongside the two boxes of candy he'd also demanded Gareth buy him.
"Easier to sneak into, you mean." Gareth corrected, with his significantly smaller bag of popcorn. His, he planned to share with Jeff, Grant having snuck in his own food.
Gareth himself would have snuck in the cheaper (and far larger) snacks, but Eddie had thrown a fit about going to the mall to see a new movie instead of Hawkin’s far older theater.
Of course, the older theater also had several disadvantages, key of which was terrible seating, and so, Gareth had bribed him with whatever treats he wanted.
His wallet took a hit but fuck it, at least they got to actually see the screen.
Not that they even made it into the fucking theater, because someone chose that moment to crash into Eddie.
Popcorn kernels and soda flew everywhere, with Eddie only avoiding it landing on him and Gareth both by years of dealing with this exact bullshit in school. Of course, the mall wasn’t school, and neither of them had their guard up.
"What the hell man--" Eddie spat, immediately on the defense, as they both turned to see what jackass wanted to cause problems this time.
Except Gareth had recognized the person who bumped him.
"Steve?" Gareth asked, causing  his cousin to totter around and face him. He was in his Scoops Ahoy uniform, which remained to be absolutely ridiculous, but that hadn't been what had drawn Gareth's attention.
No, that would be the absolute wrecked face staring at him with a doped up grin.
All thoughts of the movie immediately faded away.
"What happened to your face!?" Gareth demanded, immediately stepping up into his cousin's space, eyes darting over the damage.
Recent black eye, split lip, blood splatter all down one side of his neck, nevermind his clothes…
"Robs!" Steve called over his shoulder instead of answering, body moving as if he was walking on a wildly rocking boat and not solid ground. "Come 'ere!"
He beamed, which had the horrific effect of resplitting his lips. "Meet Gareth, my baby cousin!"
"I am two years younger than you." Gareth argued on automatic. He didn’t look to see how Eddie took this little piece of info--he’d figure out what he’d say later, when Steve wasn’t covered in blood.
It did not stop Robin from reaching out to pinch his cheeks.
She too, Gareth realized, was clearly high on something, both of them giggling and weaving on their feet.
At least Robin didn’t appear to be hurt--or at least, not hurt as badly as Steve.
"What the hell did you two take?" Gareth demanded, looking between them as he quickly put his popcorn back off to the side.
"We didn't take anything, dad." Steve said bossily, rolling his eyes. He spoke in a voice so unlike himself that Gareth knew his own face was doing something crazy.
Not that he could stop it because what the hell.
"What my patriotic friend here means is that we don't know." Robin added, smacking a hand onto Steve’s shoulder.
(The entire sentence was slurred and sounded like she'd shoved candy in her mouth before she started talking.)
"You don't know?!” Gareth asked, taking in the way Steve flinched when Robin touched him. Added a mental note to check his cousin's shoulder too. “How do you not know?"
Gareth wasn't panicking, he wasn't, except he absolutely fucking was. Steve's dad was going to kill him, disown him, and throw the body out of his house--in that exact order.
Gareth’s parents wouldn’t take him in, not unless his mom felt she could use it to one up her sister in some way which meant that Gareth was going to have to sneak Steve in and out of the house like he was some--some puppy Gareth was trying to keep and--
"Did someone give you two something?" Eddie asked, interrupting Gareth’s spiraling.
"Give is a very strong word." Steve said with a snicker.
Robin nodded so much she looked like a bobble head. She leaned in, nearly falling into Gareth in the process. “In fact it’s not the word I’d use at all! I’d use…” She trailed off, screwing her eyes up in thought.
“Made us?” Steve suggested as Gareth finally gave in to his instincts and reached out to steady his cousin. “Forced us?”
“Socked it to us!” Robin added with a weird amount of glee, and the two of them once again collapsed into giggles.
Literally, forcing Gareth to try and steady them both.
Which meant Eddie was right--they’d been drugged. It made perfect sense-- Steve wasn’t the kind to experiment with drugs beyond weed. Had in fact, given a very long lecture about how he’d make Gareth go on runs with him if he ever found out Eddie had given him anything stronger than weed.
There was no way he’d change now, and especially not around a jobsite. Particularly one as busy as the mall.
"You can't tell anybody." Robin continued, eyes so wide they were more white than pupils. "But we got truth serumed!"
As if that made any fucking sense.
Gareth turned a half frantic, half disbelieving look to Eddie--whose own face scared him almost as badly as Steve's did.
He was hiding it, and doing a good job of doing so, but Eddie was the one person Gareth knew better than Steve.
Right now? Eddie Munson was furious.
Not mad, or upset, or even as pissed as he had been the time Tommy Hagan had thrown his drug box in the river.
He was enraged.
"Hey." He said, and the only thing more shocking than realizing Eddie was this mad was hearing him talk in a calming, almost playful voice. "Sounds like you two sailors had a pretty rough time. Why don't we go to the bathroom and get you both cleaned up? I bet you'll feel a little better."
It was clearly the right move, because both of them looked downright delighted.
"He thinks we're sailors!" Steve said, cupping a hand around his mouth and leaning to talk in Robin’s ear as if he was whispering. (He wasn’t.)
Robin’s grin grew impossibly wider, before Eddie stepped forward to help Gareth half guide half herd the two into the nearest bathroom.
"I know you." Robin said, squinting dramatically as Eddie opened the door with his regular flair, bellowing for anyone in the place to get out.
It was Steve's turn to nod enthusiastically. "That's Eddie, Robbie." He said.
"I'm honored King Steve knows such a humble peasant's name." Eddie bowed as Gareth finally got both Steve and Robin into the bathroom, trying to get them to sit on the floor before they fell on their asses.
Which just made a hurt expression appear on Steve's face. "’Course I do. You have really pretty hair."
It had the effect of making Eddie look like he’d been punched and Gareth had to quickly turn his bark of laughter into a cough.
"I bet it's soft.” Steve continued, as he pressed his back against the tiled wall and slowly slid down to the floor. “Gare, is it soft?"
"It's very soft." Gareth agreed, trying to wet a paper towel with shaking hands. Finally he gave up entirely, ripping the plaid sweater he had tied around his waist and shoving one of the sleeves into the sink.
“Oh my god.” Robin said abruptly, sitting up from her own slouched spot on the floor as if she’d suddenly been stricken sober. “It’s him! He’s your type!”
“What’s my type?” Steve turned to her, as Eddie leaned his back against the door to the bathroom, blocking anyone else from entering.
“It’s like--like Nancy! But boy Nancy.” Robin seemed to think this made a ton of sense, and given Steve’s immediate groan maybe it did to him, but Gareth was too freaked out to even begin to process what the hell they were on about.
Probably nothing, given they’d been drugged.
Eddie seemed to pick up on his general anxiety and poor attempts at shoving down his own freakout, because he gently called out Gareth’s name.
“I think it’s wet enough.” He added with a raised eyebrow. His eyes drifted purposefully to the sink and with a curse, Gareth snapped shut the water off.
His hands were still shaking.
“Give it to me.” Eddie said gently, moving to take the shirt from Gareth’s hands. “Here, swap me Gare, and guard the door.”
Gareth did, as Eddie knelt down to take Steve’s chin in one hand, and carefully began dapping his wounded face with the wet sleeve.
“May I ask what battles you two sailors have been involved in?” He said, continuing to sound like playful, fun Eddie and not like he was about to murder half the town (which, Gareth could tell by body language alone, is what Eddie actually felt like) “Did you happen to catch a glimpse of the villains who did this?"
“Robin melted into Steve, rubbing her face in his shoulder. “You wouldn’t believe us.”
Eddie smiled his most charming smile, a full blown rouge grin he played up as he continued to wipe and dab at Steve’s wounds. “You’d be surprised at what I believe in, my fair lady.”
Steve tried to talk, but ended up hissing as he ran into Eddie’s fingers.
“Russians.” He managed to get out, when Eddie quickly took the sleeve away so he could talk. “We got kidnapped by fucking Russians. Also we kinda saw some shit and they’re after us. Possibly you now if they saw you with us.”
There was the briefest of pause as Steve and Robin stared at Eddie, as Eddie stared back.
Then Steve and Robin as one started howling with laughter, so hard that Robin’s head ended up in Steve’s lap with Steve’s own head resting on hers.
Eddie turned to give Gareth a pinched look. “Russians.” He said, still calm despite it all. “Right.”
Which had to be the fucking drugs speaking.
Gareth just took a deep breath as Eddie managed to gently prod Steve back into putting his chin in his hand, shaking his head ever so slightly.
He didn’t know who he was going to actually have to murder, but at least Eddie looked to be on board with acting as his backup.
Based on a twitter thread the lovely @nburkhardt shared in the Discord chat and I just took the idea that Gareth is both Chrissy AND Steve's cousin and ran with it.
Tumblr media
"Harrington, think fast!" Gareth is already lobbing the cream soda at Steve's head before he's even fully looked up but the asshole snatches it out of the air no problem. It barely even fizzes when he cracks the can open. The bastard.
"And for you, Chrysanthemum," Gareth hands off her cream soda gently, because she's his favorite cousin. She laughs at him but takes the soda. She doesn't open it right away, instead opting to set it beside her in the shade of the shed they've taken residency of. Out of sight of the rest of their family and their thousand and one questions.
"You know nicknames are supposed to be shorter than the original name, right?" Steve says, then burps because he chugged half the soda in one swallow.
"Gross," Chrissy says at the same time as Gareth's, "noice."
Steve grins, pleased with himself.
"Hey, so. I wanted to talk to you guys about something," Gareth says after a moment of quiet has fallen over them. He's plopped down in the front of them instead of resuming his spot beside Chrissy, leaning against the shed in the shade. It puts him in the sun but he wants to look at them both as they talk.
"Anything, Garebearringham," Chrissy says to annoy Steve with a lengthened nickanme.
"So, I'll be a freshman this year. And, I love you guys, you know I do, but, uh, I don't want to be seen associating with you. Publically."
There's a beat of silence where Steve and Chrissy just stare back, Chrissy looking hurt and Steve looking offended.
"What I mean is that you're both already, like, known. You know? And I don't want to just be… the cool kids' younger cousin. I want to be uncool on my own."
Chrissy says, "Oh. Yeah, I get that."
Steve says, "You want to be uncool?"
Gareth gestures to all of himself. "I am not aiming to win the popularity contest. I want to join the Hellfire club." He points an accusing finger at Steve. "You told me yourself that the club leader climbs on tables and rants about jocks-"
"Yeah, as a warning to not join Hellfire. How did you read that wrong?"
"-so I can't be seen associating with a cheerleader and the king of jocks. That'll ruin my, like, cred or whatever!"
Chrissy is nodding along solemnly. She's always been understand and sympathetic to Gareth, especially when it comes to being himself. In quiet alone times, she's confessed to being jealous of how easily being himself came to him and she wished she was as brave. Steve, however, was a conformist through and through and while Gareth could understand the why (his uncle and aunt are not the best of people) he's never going to try and fit in just because it makes like easier.
"Your cred," Steve says monotone, his bitch face out in full force.
"Yeah! My street cred!"
Chrissy and Steve share a look. Steve raises and eyebrow and Chrissy shrugs before they look back to Gareth.
"Alright. You're secret is safe with us, Garrington," Chrissy teases.
"Do not!"
"You think people aren't going to put together that you and Chrissy have the same last name?" Steve says, because he's a shithead.
"So? There like 4 Smiths, and none of them are related. It'll be fine."
"True. No one will believe the amazing Chrissy Cunningham is related to the absolute loser Gareth Cunningham."
"Absolute loser! You're a dick, Steve Harrington."
"Yeah, but you know I got your back even if you're a loser."
Gareth doesn't answer. He opens his own soda then, chugging enough to let out his own gross burp for Chrissy to scold him about and Steve to laugh.
It's the summer of 1983 and things can only go up for them all now that they're all in high school together.
