I know this has been done before but here’s my headcanons for LU Chronic illness/Disability boys:

Legend(he/they): Hypermobile type Ehlers Danlos syndrome. Frequently dislocates joints and doesn’t see why the others make such a big deal about it, it happens all the time! Primarily suffers from widespread join pain, instability and chronic fatigue. Has as many different mobility aids as they have magical artifacts.

Time(he/him?): Early onset osteoarthritis and partially blind. All of the time travel and shifting forms was not kind to his joints, so the connective tissue was damaged and BOOM. Arthritis. The old man jokes are becoming less and less of a joke every day. Also experiences debilitating migraines.

Hyrule(they/he): Sensory Processing Disorder (often associated with autism but can be caused by other conditions). Their magic sensitivity can often cause overstimulation in their other senses, and they are very sensitive to light, sound, smell and touch. They are semi-verbal because even his own voice can overstimulate him sometimes, but they don’t know sign very well. Also has anemia.

Wild(genderfluid he/she/they): hypertrophic contractural scarring, partially deaf, semi-verbal because of vocal cord scarring. Also prosthetic arm(set after TOTK). She switches between sign and speaking, whichever is easiest for him that day. They have to perform daily stretches and apply scar lotion to be functional, but they aren’t very good at remembering to do so. Often blows out his voice because he gets excited, but can’t tell how loud he is speaking.

Four(plural they/them): Dissociative Identity Disorder(but not really because of magical reasons), damaged growth plates because of Minish magic. They have very similar symptoms to DID, but there are slight differences because it was caused magically and traumatically, not like in the real world. They sometimes struggle to walk correctly because their growth plates are damaged, causing their legs to be slightly different lengths. They wear adaptive shoes to correct this.

Sky(he/him): POTS(Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), chronic fatigue. He struggles to breathe the denser air on the Surface, but he struggled with it on Skyloft as well. He has a chronically higher heart rate that causes dizziness and (rarely) passing out when moving from sitting to standing, after eating, and after adrenaline rushes. This causes his stamina to be fairly low, and also causes chronic fatigue.

Twilight(he/him): RRMS(Relapse/Remission Multiple Sclerosis). This is caused magically by the Twilight curse eating away at his body’s nerves, but is kept mostly under control by his shadow crystal. Occasionally, he goes through relapses and experiences anything from tingling and numbness in a limb to temporary loss of vision in one or both eyes, balance issues, vertigo and slurred speech. These flares are almost always debilitating, but thankfully they only happen every couple of months and last from a few days to about a week.

Wind(he/him?): A little cliche, but he has a peg leg. He likes to tell outlandish stories about it getting bit off by a kraken or eaten by a cannibal, but the truth is that he got an infection, couldn’t treat it in time and had to amputate. This happened sometime after his quests had finished, and he’s still a little ashamed of the actual circumstances, so he doesn’t open up often.

(edit) I FORGOT WARRIORS

Warriors(he/him): Speaking Disfluency (Stutter). Often repeats sounds, such as “G-g-g-guys”, or extends sounds; “Llllllll-Iove you”. He grew up poor, so he was never able to get treatment for it, so he communicates using sign while Proxi translates verbally, though this isn’t as necessary with the Chain since most of them know sign.

...so I participated in a writing torch relay today, and had a silly idea for this. I had the torch for 2 hours straight, though, and just... kept writing... So this is rather unorganized.

I don't think any context is really all that necessary, it's just part of the beginning of TotK but with the FS boys and Shadow instead, with a focus on established Vidow. The only spoilers for TotK are all drawn from just after you get down to Lookout Landing.

Anyway! almost 2000 words! hope you like it despite it being weird! if you like, you can pretend that it ends after the first break!

Gloom smells weird. Shadow wrinkles his nose as he peeks into the chasm beneath Hyrule Castle, balancing carefully so as not to fall in. It smells like a combination of dust and monsters, but with something rather brimstone-y beneath it all. It looks and smells all too much like Malice, but it's even stronger than that was, before it all disappeared.

The chasm is desperately dark, and Shadow does not fancy going down there. Luckily, Josha likes him, and won't make him do things he doesn't want to do. Even after six years out of Vaati's control, Shadow still sometimes finds it surprising when people ask rather than order.

Shadow pulls back so he won't fall in. The Gloom doesn't make him sick like it makes regular Hylians sick, but he still doesn't like touching the stuff. He hears footsteps behind him, and sighs as he turns, ready to chew someone out for being this close to the chasms.

Instead, he freezes, eyes wide, as his favorite face in all of Hyrule, above and below, rounds the bend. Vio looks a little tired, and something weird is up with his clothes, but it's him. He even does that little hesitation thing he does, like he's not sure Shadow actually wants to hug him or not.

Of course Shadow wants to hug him. Shadow snatches Vio around the waist and spins him around once, holding him tight. He smells like the wind.

"Vio, you're back!" Shadow gives him one more squeeze before pulling away enough to look at him. He doesn't really want to let go, but as much as he just wants to keep Vio pressed close for eternity, he also wants to see his face.

Vio's smile is like the sun, and he's a bit breathless when he speaks. "Hi, Shadow. Miss me?"

"Of course I missed you, Vi, I thought—" Shadow's interrupted by the other three arriving, dressed identically but for the colors again.

Something's definitely weird about their clothes, but Shadow lets it go in favor of pulling Blue into the group hug that Red initiates and Green throws himself into. He can't stop himself from jumping up and down a little to let off some of the sheer relief and joy that's filling him up.

"Never seen Vio run so fast," Green says, and Vio smacks his head, but Red laughs.

"It's been a few months." Shadow lets them go and looks them over with a critical eye. "You and Zelda have been missing, we thought you might have died, except people keep talking about seeing—"

"Zelda!" Red interrupts, pointing, and the five of them turn to see a girl standing out on one of the broken towers, a girl as blonde as them. Though the dress is different, Shadow clearly recognizes her. They don't even have time to register her appearance, though, before she lifts into the air and turns into sparkles.

It's… weird, to say the least. Green looks like he's about to cry, and a heavier mood settles over the rest of them.

"Guys?" Shadow begins. "Where have you been?"

The four heroes exchange looks, and it's Vio who answers, sliding his left hand in Shadow's right as a comforting gesture for them both.

"We woke up a few days ago," Vio says. "Up there."

Shadow follows his pointing finger—and that is definitely not a glove, seriously, what the hell—up to the largest island floating in the sky, far above them. "On the skyslands? Wait, wait, wait. A few days ago? What happened?"

"It's a bit of a story," Green says with a sigh, his hands on his hips.

They look tired. All five of them are in need of food, rest, and context.

Shadow takes a breath and nods. "Let's head to Lookout, then. We're safe there. We can fill each other in, and you can grab some of your things. You're gonna get cold, wearing that."

For all that Shadow had meant that they'd tell stories inside a safe room, the others chatter away to him as they head down out of the castle and through the town ruins. He learns what happened when they went to investigate the tunnels below the castle that day months ago. He squeezes Vio's hand again as Green mentions that they'd almost died, so they'd been shoved back together into one body to heal, which also explains how they have identical, magical prosthetic arms. They tell him about finding the sword, but how using it to split again had weakened it too much to use. And if that wasn't enough, it had entirely disappeared into yellow light shortly afterwards.

Blue talks a bit about the new enemies they'd fought, machine things that match up with some reports Shadow's heard. Vio's more interested in knowing how they work, going so far as to reveal that he'd been keeping parts of each one they'd defeated. It would sound stupid, but Red's all too excited to talk about the new abilities that came with their arms, and about how those machine parts came in handy.

"Handy," Green repeats with a grin, and Blue shoves him to stumbling.

"Be nice," Red scolds. "Hey, are those sky island pieces?" He runs ahead to look closer at the rocks that had fallen just outside of Lookout Landing. The area's deserted for the moment, so Shadow just tugs Vio along a little faster to keep up.

"Yeah, a ton of these fell all over Hyrule when the islands appeared," Shadow says, watching Red inspect the rock. "They're kinda hard to climb, and we haven't really found anything we can use on them. Except the fruit."

"Oh, this is easy," Red says, looking directly up at an overhang.

Shadow narrows his eyes. "What are you looking for?"

Nobody has a chance to answer, because Red jumps straight up, his arm glowing. He jumps into the rock above him like a Zora headed off a waterfall into deep water.

Blue laughs at Shadow's stricken expression, and Red appears on top of the rock again, climbing out as if it were just thick water. He goes to investigate the ruin on top.

Vio takes pity. "He can do that now. That's Ascending."

"He can—swim through solid stone?" Shadow manages. "He can walk through walls?"

"Not walls, just ceilings."

"How does that make sense?"

Vio shrugs. "Is it really any weirder than being able to produce giant blocks of ice out of sufficiently large puddles, or having an infinite number of bombs, or"—he glances at Shadow—"teleporting through darkness?"

Shadow has to admit, Vio has him on that one. He sighs heavily. "No."

Red calls down at them, poking his head over the edge. "It's just a steward construct, nothing dangerous. Hey, Green, how many crystallized charges do we have?"

Green pulls out a device that looks suspiciously like a Purah Pad—when had he gotten one of those?—and answers. "Twenty-two?"

"We need a hundred for another energy cell!" Red drops back down to the ground and hands off a few of those new fruits over to Green.

Vio hums. "So that's how you get more."

"I have no idea what any of those words are," Shadow says flatly.

"That's okay. We'll fill you in. But you need to fill us in, too."

Lookout Landing isn't very big, but there are a few private rooms in the walls, mostly used by older folks. Shadow manages to snag two empty ones for the night, and the four of them sneak in without raising too much of a hullabaloo. Night falls, and things calm down enough that Shadow can breathe again. Things feel right with Vio sitting next to him on the balcony, looking up at the stars. He'd really missed this.

When they'd gone down to investigate the tunnels with Zelda, Green had brought along the Sheikah Slate, despite its declining functionality. It appeared that once they weren't needed, all the shrines and towers and runes just… disappeared. The storage functions still worked just fine, though, so they didn't feel the need to switch to one of the prototypical Purah Pads.

Somewhere in the chaos, the Slate had disappeared, too, taking with it most of their magical clothing, which was pretty much all the clothing they ever owned. Shadow's pretty sure that they'll find more out in Hateno, but for now, they're wearing borrowed clothes from Shadow. He doesn't mind.

He especially doesn't mind Vio wearing one of his outfits, dark sleeves and pants under a silvery lavender tunic. The moonlight bathing him makes him look ethereal.

"I'm sorry we vanished there," Vio says quietly, nestled against Shadow's side. "I know there wasn't anything I could have done about it, but…"

Shadow pulls him a little closer. "You're okay. That's what I was worried about."

Vio nods. "You, too. I'm glad to see the outpost growing. People here really respect you."

"I'm the closest thing they had to a Hero while you all were gone." Shadow snorts. "Thanks for coming back and taking some of that pressure off."

"Oh, I'm always glad to come and save my boyfriend from being too noble and chivalrous. Now you can get back to your regularly scheduled evil."

"See? You get it." Shadow lets out a deep breath and settles further into the contact. Vio is so relievingly warm and present. It makes Shadow feel more real, to have someone who knows him.

Vio holds up his new hand to look closer at it. The nails are long, and he'd explained that they're really more like claws than nails. The skin is deep purple, but Shadow had seen it glow brighter when Vio had shown off his own new powers a little. Red could jump through ceilings (not walls, and not floors, they'd tried), Blue had a sixth sense for what weapons could be attached together for the best effect, Green pulled objects back in time, and Vio could make things. As if he needed a way to make his devious ideas a reality.

It truly is a bit strange to see a different arm, but Shadow isn't really put off by it. He knows that he has a few strange traits of his own, and Vio loves him anyway, so of course Shadow would do the same.

Shadow reaches out after a few seconds and takes the hand, lacing their fingers together to show Vio be doesn't care, just in case the idiot worried about it. "I assume you'll all be off soon? Are you going to stick together again?"

Vio lowers his hand and turns his head into Shadow's shoulder. "We've got to go find Zelda, yeah, and help out with whatever's going on. Some of it sounds really bad. We already have one adventure down, so I'm not too worried about splitting up if we need to, but… it feels strange to think about actually doing that."

"Yeah, I get it. It does feel strange to think about."

"Are you going to come, too?" Vio asks.

Shadow blinks up at the stars, wondering if he'd ever become so weightless he'd float up there. "What, me? Really?"

"Sure. You have a Purah Pad too, a newer one. You have a lot of skills, and it isn't as if you'd be taking resources we need. I bet we could use the extra combatant, if you're willing to come along."

"I am so willing. I'm coming. You can't stop me, now."

Vio smiles. "We're going to cause so many problems."

"Hopefully fix a few, too."

"Yeah, that too."

First ever published: you're the prize (i wish i'd won) EXO, kyungsoo/jongin lord almighty, it's almost been six years! how surreal is that. yeah, i had this idea for an enemies to lovers fic while watching parks and recreation. i dont know. it was one of those things that just absolutely compelled me. it's kaisoo bc i was reading a lot of kaisoo before jumping into the fandom. i look back on this one fondly, but i dont think i'm confident enough to reread it. might hurt my feelings lmao

Last fic published: i aim to be your eyes EXO, sehun/junmyeon my fuckin baby!!! still ongoing. probably will finish sometime in 2024. well. Crossing my fingers anyway. it's long and silly, but i love writing it. once i start reading over some part of it, i immediately feel like i need to add more to it. i love writing all the little characters and reading how people think things will end up. i still have yet to decide on the ending, but who knows, maybe i'll sopranos it.

Fic that you wrote for a fandom/ship only once: the million roads that lead to you MDZS, lan zhan/wei ying wrote this before even watching the live action. definitely not sure how it holds up. will almost certainly never write another fic for this fandom, but it was fun to write regardless!

Favorite fic you wrote in a fandom/ship that has the most works: in the blood haikyuu, keishin/ittetsu had no idea that haikyuu had more fics than any of my other fandoms. so it goes. it was interesting to see that nct has surpassed exo too. cwazy daisies. anyway, i love this fic, i think its kinda my masterpiece for haikyuu. i sometimes want to return to this pairing, but the lack of engagement sours my mood abt it a bit. i love writing it, but i feel like the more i shove it in people's faces, the less likely they are to read lol

Fic you wish more people read: lawyers, guns, and money EXO, sehun/baekhyun i thought this was a great little fic (she says, looking at the novel length word count) and i was really shocked that it didnt get more love. i mean, its fun, it's spacey, it's found family. i still really like a lot of the passages, i think they're very pretty. maybe i'll reread it myself since NO ONE ELSE WILL!

Fic you agonized over the most: chronos-826 EXO, sehun/junmyeon i can hardly remember the way this fest was run, but lord, i remember being irked. like there was noooo communication if you weren't on the discord, and i was like jeez, i know it said you could join but i didnt know it would be MANDATORY if you wanted information about the event lol. but yeah. despite all that, i really enjoyed writing this. and by enjoyed, i mean went insane. literally i felt like i was going crazy throughout the majority of it, and while the finished product is a lot different from what i had envisioned (something more along the lines of House of Leaves with that element of interactivity.... sigh) im still proud of what i managed to produce

Fic that sprang fully formed from your mind without any effort: pilgrimage EXO, sehun/baekhyun yeah this fic was just so weird and like. Fantastical. it felt like it was dropped from god's hands into my brain. like i sat there and wrote the first 10k almost in a Flow state, didn't touch it for months, and then just banged out the rest like it was nothing. i doubt anything will ever come so easily to me ever again, but yeah. what a time to be alive!

Work you are proud of—for whatever reason: i write to you from the road and the red king's consort BOTW/TOTK, sidon/link i just think these are some really nice examples of my writing. idk. like i think they accomplish what they seek to accomplish, i think they're stylish and pretty, i think they have a lot of earned emotional weight to them. Just some nice fics by me imo. anyway. that's it.

TOTK SPOILERS AHEAD

OKAY OKAY GUYS links first diary entry as a sneak peek from my fanfic!!! This is a prototype so I mightttt rewrite it but this should be how the fic opens up!

Anyways, heres the entry from my draconic au fic!

First entry

A lot of things have happened since I wrote anything in this diary, things that I probably couldn't have imagined happening at all. But here we are.

Where should I start off.. Well it's been a few months since the battle.

And the disappearance of Zelda. I looked for her all across Hyrule. I went to all of the regions in Hyrule to search for her, I asked the locals everywhere I could. There were sightings of her, so I followed those. Whenever I thought I was close to finding her, I always went a few steps back. All of those traces led to loose ends. Either it was The Yiga impersonating her to trap me, or Ganon's little puppet that played with my emotions. Still I kept on going with the hope of finding her even after all of those traps and loose ends. I alway looked up at the sky wondering where she was, I saw a dragon following me everywhere. Its gaze never left mine. I was really confused where it came from. It was strange, I was wondering why I saw it every time I looked up to the sky. It felt like it wanted something from me. I was fascinated by this dragon so I decided to take a closer look. I went to a sky island, and hopped on the dragon. When I studied its scales I felt something warm, familiar from it. It felt like a warm loving touch that I’ve felt somewhere before. Still I couldn’t put my finger on what it was exactly.

Until eventually I discovered the Dragon's tears. Then I understood everything. She was above me, watching me all this time, without me knowing it was her. She was there when I woke up, she was there the whole time. All I could do for her at the time was just visit her every so often, and leave a silent princess on her back to comfort her. She's been crying all those years and suffering alone without me knowing that. Sometimes in the middle of the night I would wake up suddenly to a dragons growl. The first time I heard it I didn't think much of it. I just thought it was a little odd cause none of the other dragons growled so frequently. It sounded like a person calling for help. I heard a humane voice fading in with the dragons. The scream.. I could hear how much pain she was in, she was desperate for help. It sounded awful. Every night it just sounded worse, I knew I had to help her somehow but how? I’ve never felt so useless in my life before, even now I still do.

Will she be able to come back? I'm the hero of Hyrule, I’ve saved this kingdom and its people twice. If I can do all of that, then why can't I save her again this time, why can’t I help her?

She's right beside me. Her mind is blank and her mouth is shut. She looks like an empty husk. The tears are still falling down from her eyes. Is it her that's beside me, or someone else? What is she thinking? Does she think anything? When she looks around and sees me, does she see a familiar face or a stranger?

how am I supposed to find you, if you are clearly here but your mind isn’t?

The Killing Moon Author's Note

He asks if he remembers her.

He doesn’t answer.

There is quiet longing between them in moments when they are alone that Link still cannot place. He thinks he needs time but Hyrule won’t grant them peace. Especially not when there is a kingdom to rebuild and the Blood Moon still rises. But Link doesn’t want to rebuild, he just wants-

(Two months later, here it is!) Wow. I cannot believe this story is finally done. I started writing this before so much of what defines me and my life today even happened…I look back at 2017 and the things that used to excite me, bother me, worry me have shifted and changed so significantly…and yet LoZ remains

There have been a few games in my lifetime that have touched me this way, becoming sources of comfort during challenging or stressful times, never losing their luster. (“Seriously, you are playing that again, B?” ) The idea for The Killing Moon came following a frantic explosion of creative energy after I finished BotW for the first time. I didn’t want it to be over. I remember diving into fanfiction at the time, hungry for anything and everything that would keep the story alive.

Then I decided to write a multi-chapter, lore-heavy, character-study of a fanfiction. As my first stab at fanfiction. Because, why not.

I churned out several chapters REALLY fast (I think 9??) and then my life got busy, my attention shifted, and before I knew, it had been years.

I would occasionally think about the story, sometimes making a mental note to go back and delete it, only to forget about it again…To be honest, I was nervous to look back at my writing and get stuck….I had had a vague outline of where I was going that was lost, so all I had in my head was a final confrontation under Hyrule Castle (more on this later).

Following a replay of BotW and the 2021 E3…I decided to do a massive edit, removing chaptering 2-9 completely, and reworking the plot to align more cohesively with what we received about the sequel. The story had a clear endpoint and it took off from there.

Major changes/themes/story notes

[MAJOR CHANGE] the tense:

I switched the ENTIRE story from past to present tense (I am positive I've slipped up here and there…I did not have a beta and, alas, I am not an editor…truly, this was written in the sleepy moments I get at the end of the day when my kids are in bed).

The Killing Moon was never meant bring much resolution and I felt present tense lent itself better to the suspense and tension I wanted present throughout with this in mind. Also, from the beginning, this story has been primarily about Link beginning the process of unpacking some of his trauma. I wanted a chance to deepen my version of Link POV and intensify the complexity of emotions he might face after all he has endured…I wanted to honor the complexity living with trauma. At times, it was meant to feel claustrophobic and uncomfortable and confusing. He is actively remembering his past in this story, specifically recalling personal details no one else can give him. Even Zelda is limited in what she can tell him about himself and as Link says, it feels wrong (even though she would gladly do it) to hold her accountable for chronicling his life. So if he wants it, he must endure it.

[THEME] loss of knowledge to time/making decisions on incomplete information:

I also wanted a tense that promoted unreliability…this story is very much a guessing game. For us (the fandom) with the sequel coming, but also the characters themselves…literally working back from the almost-end of the world where many of the information-keepers died and records were destroyed/lost.

BotW is a post-apocalyptic Hyrule. The “golden age” is long gone. Even the “robust” Hyrule we see in the events of 100 years ago do not hold a candle to what is alluded to exist in Hyrule 10,000 years prior. There is little/no mention of KEY elements in LoZ lore because they have been lost to time, purposely concealed, and then forgotten over the ages.

“Goddess, don't tell me you’ve forgotten your sacred charge? “A pause. “The power without equal. The hidden treasure of Sky Keep? Broken by Twilight’s touch? Fa ha ha…The birth of the Calamity has even faded into myth, hasn't it?...Now give me what I ask in return for the secrets of the Triforce.” (Horned statue, Chapter 4)

In the Killing Moon, first time they have ever heard about the Triforce is from a demon.

This Link and Zelda, in a way, resemble the first version of themselves. They have very little guidance. The history they are working through is incomplete and potentially inaccurate (maybe even skewed by those who recorded it) and yet, they must face destiny all the same. As we saw in BotW, destiny doesn’t wait for you to be prepared.

[THEME] the burden of destiny/ trauma across lifetimes:

Jacob Geller provides a beautiful narration to the theme of darkness in the Zelda series as a whole and does a magnificent job of summarizing what sets BotW apart. “It is a game in which each acre, every abandoned stable and crumbled temple and forgotten spring is a monument to your failures.”

I didn’t come upon this video until very recently, but I feel like it captures the essence of the the "big picture stuff" I was aiming for with Link. The first scene I wrote for The Killing Moon was actually his panic attack in chapter 3:

"Nothing - left of me," he continues in a desperate whisper. He can’t read her face. "If we have to - again," His hands are sweeping in front of him, tracing his broken speech in patterns that feel true. “I won't come back. My body but I-”

A new resolve takes hold of him. He doesn’t need her to just hear him -he wants her word. He’s in her face now. She takes him up in her hands again, and furiously thumbs away the tears from his cheeks. He is supposed to be dead. He whimpers and dips his head down, chewing, chewing, chewing on the words.

"Not-not even sure I'm fully alive!"

To die (I know the jury is out on whether he actually dies or not, but in The Killing Moon, he does die 100 years ago), come back without your memories (essentially the stuff that make us who we are), into a world that has seen generations since you closed your eyes, and be thrust back into a destiny you have already failed…and then the WEIGHT of your past lives…thinking about the overstimulation alone breaks my heart. I feel it in my gut.

Now that Link has finally done it, “completed” the task he was charged with 100 years ago, what happens to the weight of duty when the war is won? What happens to a weapon? Does he get put on a mount somewhere, too? Does he turn to dust?

He can’t even figure that out because of the inescapability of his fate. In the first chapter, he is called to destiny a THIRD time in a single lifetime.

He is also trying to make sense of this with another person. Someone he learns he once loved, who still loves him, who he understands has danced with him in these roles over many lifetimes.

Is there any part of this soul that is his alone? (Chapter 7)

How much of this was manufactured? Does that even matter to him now? Can he allow himself to have feelings? In BotW, we learn 100 years ago Link felt so burdened by duty, he stopped speaking (in The Killing Moon, it is a total loss of the already very little verbal speech he had as an individual who is/was selectively mute.) Now, faced with another “calamity” of sorts, it is his feelings toward Zelda, in particular, he struggles with. And she as well -can they allow this when they know what is at stake? There is a push and pull intentionally through the story, the impact of severely ingrained GUILT for wanting more than what they are destined for. Wanting each other more than anything.

“This isn’t the first time I’ve heard stories about your travels, all you’ve done for everyone else since you woke up. It doesn't feel like my Hyrule anymore. It feels like yours.”

“It can be yours, too.” His voice frays at the end. He sets his hands on her thighs. Something burns in his throat.

“It’s OK. I’m at peace with this. Really, I am. I will do everything I can to protect it. To protect them. For you.” (Chapter 10)

Also a feeling that their timing is off. Their specific time together, that they were supposed to have, has past (I think we see it in AOC tbh). They’ve lost that to destiny, too.

[MAJOR CHANGE] Big Bad

"A Spring is created only when a divine spirit departs from Hyrule." A mischievous smile. “What is born from shadow? A Void. The Blood Moon is a harbinger of what’s waiting beyond. See, look here-” (Hino, Chapter 3)

In the original draft of this story, before 2019 E3, Void was the name of the "Big Evil" in this Hyrule. It was going to be revealed as another title for Demise, trapped inside Ganondorf who was sealed under Hyrule Castle. I shit you not, lol. His sealing was going to have been flawed somehow and the malice or essence that escaped is how we get Calamity Ganon. That is why in chapter 7 the movements of CG in the footage are “off”. Basically a dead spirit carcass being possessed by the Big Evil because, fuck, he’s not going to die that easily after 10,000 years and then another 100 more of being this close.

When we got the teasers, Void became a description for the concealed bit of history. I still wanted to play with the themes of parasites/possession and added in the possibility that after his time with Zelda, a silver of the human he was started to come through. You can read my thoughts on the battery theory, which heavily influenced the connection between Ganondorf, Link and Zelda in this story.

“All three or none at all.” (Master Sword, Chapter 7).

Ganondorf too is trapped by his destiny and how TERRIBLE it is to be on THAT side of it. Imagine if your destiny was the soul of not a Hero or a Goddess, but a demon. What if your destiny was to be the one who will Eat the World? And what if you loved Hyrule? What if Ganondorf was a man of the people, who was trying to do right and the Royal Family tried to ERASE him from history by sealing him away and concealing everything from the records?

“We are bound too tightly in this fate. We’ve been fighting for a long time. More than a century. It was us ten thousand years ago. It has been the three of us time and time again. Link, when I was in the darkness, sometimes I felt like he was a part of me. And that part was lonely and scared and so tired. I think he wants us to save him like we saved you. Is that crazy?”

I am admittedly pretty obsessed with the idea Zelda feels connected to Ganondorf.

[STORY NOTES] Zonai

Mentioning the Zonai came in the rewrites. Not even on my radar in 2017 when I started The Killing Moon. Clearly, I am firmly in the-Zonai-play-a-big-role-in-the-past-and-TotK-camp. But I didn’t think it was realistic for Link and Zelda to figure out everything about them in this story.

[STORY NOTES] Luminous Stones

Another addition to the rewrite. I became obsessed with all the raw luminous-stone looking crystals in the teasers and ran with the detail about them rumored to contain souls of dead. It did not make it into the story but I did have tons of notes about how these luminous stones might be souls of Zonai or the army of the spear-wielding rider in the pictographs/ petroglyphs and their energy is part of the seal.

[STORY NOTES]Losing the Master Sword

The threat of this was always in the original story but it was emphasized more in the rewrite.

The original story had Link’s nightmare in which the Sword is gone (it was actually written to be symbolic of LINK “becoming” the Master Sword in the nightmare, that his body is the weapon, to be bent and broken and forged again and again with the Shrine of Resurrection). Hyrule Forest–resting place of the Master Sword–was destroyed in the original story. It fits well with TotK. I do wonder if the Lost Woods will be inaccessible for the game or for a part of the game.

[Fun-ish facts]

I love to connect all the LoZ stories and overiously do so with direct references to past lives (this story is SS, TP, Oot-heavy). But there are more indirect references in The Killing Moon I tried to sneak in:

The three comrades from Link's past (Colson, Medin and Jayde) are called "four swords" by their commanding officer. (Four Sword Adventures)

so i played splatoon 1 for 57 hours when i came back to it in the last couple months. that puts it at 440, just under splatoon 2 (which is at 450)

really makes me realize how little i played splatoon 2, relative to how much content it had and how long it was the newest game.

after a year or so of splat1, basically ignoring every other wii u game i got after that to play splatoon more (3ds escaped this only by being portable) i went into splat2 resolving to not leave a trail of unfinished games behind me again

buuuut that just created a different issue. new game comes out, i'm like ok i'll get through this and go back to splatoon.... then another new game comes out before i can do that. and i still didn't even finish most of them. probably the bulk of my splat2 activity comes from the first 3 months before mario odyssey released, and the month or two after octo expansion, and the rest is just keeping up with the new content, splatfests, and hitting the salmon run checkpoints and dropping in for special rotations. i could've played more. i should've played more

i'm taking a different approach with splatoon 3. yeah, they're still making games i want to play that aren't splatoon. but i like splatoon more. so it should have priority. and i've discovered the secret to not feeling bogged down by a lot of unfinished games i've bought is to just... not buy a lot of games. in the past i'd buy stuff if i got a good deal or if i just wanted to make sure i got it when it was available (since i prefer physical). and spending money on that means i feel more obligated to play it and i feel bad if i don't fit it in

but, welllllll, when i got the splat3 oled i hacked my launch model switch and so now uh. i'm not worried about missing out on switch games. if i wanted them i could get them whenever. and it removes the whole "i paid for this i should get my money's worth" obligation. (and yeah i prefer physical but getting a good deal is a good tradeoff to go digital. especially if the deal is free). anyway i haven't actually done anything with my hacked switch beyond setting it up but the option certainly is there. i'd still end up buying games i intend to play online though (which is pretty much just splatoon and pokemon, the latter just for trading and home compatibility)

so yeah in the year and a half since splatoon 3 released literally the only other games i've gotten are pokemon violet (and its dlc) and totk. im not even done with either of them (though in violet all i have left to do is get the rest of the post-dlc legendaries). probably will buy the ttyd remake too. other than that it's just been splatoon 3

i kind of don't want to play it too much though. i burned myself out playing splatoon 1 a lot ahead of the last splatfest (which is why i pretty much didn't touch it again until this year), and it took until splatoon 2 for me to want to play again.

but the issue there was i decided i wanted to hit level 50 during the last splatfest, and i was far enough away that i'd need to get a ton of exp each day to make it (i think something over 200? you get 5 exp for winning and 2 for losing so if that was 200 exp exactly, it'd be over 3 hours a day at BEST. i tended to win about 2/3 to 3/4 of the time in splat1 those days so it was at least on the shorter side, but still, you can imagine the strain this put on the fun i was having playing the game).

this is also why i don't particularly care about leveling up in splatoon 3 (especially since other players can't see your level this time). i recently hit level 50 after over 800 hours, probably about double how long i took to get there in splatoon 2 (i'm in the low 50s in there, maybe 54 at most). if salmon run gave exp though i'd be way higher (it should) (when are they updating it to do that) (seriously if they can add wandercrust support to it they can add exp too)

i do think i really need a break from splatoon at one point. there's enough that i want to do that i'll probably continue after content updates stop, but i don't want to keep playing daily all the way until splatoon 4 (whenever that is). i need to at least turn it into a weekly routine after that maybe. forget the first victory of the day bonus (catalogs wouldn't have anything important at that point i assume? mystery boxes like the extra catalogs i'm thinking), maybe at least catch each salmon run rotation's superbonuses for the cash drops (that's not a once a week thing though. that's like 4 days a week i think. better than daily, but still)

i would totally be fine if the next splatoon game didn't come out for like a decade. there's enough in 3 to last that long. but of course if they're making a new console, they're going to put splatoon on it. it's only a matter of when. would we be looking at 3 years after splat3 content stops, like last time? longer? shorter? who knows. may depend on whether some of the devs will have to do an animal crossing game in between again
