❝A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on.❞ ― John F. Kennedy
It’s a peculiarly warm day in New England despite traces of snow still blanketing the dead grass in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. A blizzard had blown through the night you arrived, and the remains of the storm are now melting away with each passing moment. A veil of mist hangs in the air by the ocean, the mixture of freezing sea water and balmy air still trickling in from the middle Atlantic lingers. You’re watching the thin fog swirl around in the cool breeze as you stand in front of the formal living room window. The Kennedy Compound is just far enough from the beach that you can see it clearly from the front of the main house where you currently reside. And though a part of you longs to be outside after being cooped up for days due to that nasty winter storm, you’d rather not be bombarded with the still fairly bitter and salty air. Thin, long sleeves cover your arms as they cross over your chest despite the warmth of the fire in the den nearby. The house is still and silent. Everyone seems to be off doing their own thing after dinner wrapped up not long ago.
At 18 years old and beginning your secondary education journey, you never would have believed that you’d be where you are a decade later. You’re now 28, working toward your dual-title doctorate in political science and history at Harvard University. You’re so close to finally graduating, and it’s almost bittersweet. You wish your parents were around to see it. You’re the first in your entire family to go to university, not to mention the first to go to Harvard. Going to such a pristine school is unheard of in your neighborhood. What’s more unheard of, is your privilege to closely study and research your chosen dissertation topic. You decided you would research the life and ongoing legacy of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States.
Except for the amount of data and information you need, you have to interview and research extensively. Which means having to eventually meet the man himself. 18-year-old you also would never believe that you would meet the President and shake his hand. Or even get to know him past the facade he puts on for the world. But it doesn’t stop there. Due to the difficulty of getting ahold of John F. Kennedy after his passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1963 and the Interracial Marriage Act, a decision was ultimately made. The chaos of Capitol Hill and the citizens of the United States pushed John F. Kennedy to leave for the holidays much sooner than usual. After getting to know you well enough over a few months, the decision was made that John F. Kennedy would invite you to stay with him and his family in Hyannis Port. Just for a few weeks, through Christmas and New Year. It isn’t like you had anything else to do or anyone to spend it with. Besides, this will be your chance to get exclusive information about the man and his family for your dissertation.
So here you are in the Kennedy family home. In the last week you’ve been here, you’ve gotten to know Jack and his family quite well. You had insisted on remaining professional and calling Jack by his real name, but he refused that. “All my friends call me Jack.”
You’ve gotten the inside scoop on Jack’s childhood and his chronic illness that has carried into adulthood. The military history in the family has also been spilled to you, and not a single detail has fallen on deaf ears. You’ve filled two notebooks already. When you aren’t scribbling down everything, you’re nose-deep in a book Jack has written. Currently, you’re reading Profiles in Courage and have found it quite interesting. You decide you’ve done enough staring out the window and that you’d join Bobby and Ted outside at the bonfire. Once you’re outside, they’re heading back indoors. But they offer to leave the fire going for you. Graciously, you accept their offer and take a seat by the warm flames, opening up Profiles in Courage.
You’re blissfully unaware of how much time has passed, your eyes eagerly scanning each word in each line as if they’d disappear any moment. You almost don’t notice the sound of snow crunching underneath someone’s approaching feet.
“Sorry to bother you, but Jack is asking for you inside.”
You nearly jump out of your skin at the sound of a man’s voice that you don’t recognize. You peer over your book at him and gauge that he must be safe, even if you don’t know who he is, considering the house is crawling with security.
“Alright, then,” you nod, putting your book down before standing up, stretching, and brushing yourself off.
You look closer at the man before you as the orange flicker of the fire basks him in an angelic glow. His hair is a mess of stark blonde curls, and he’s in a white button-up, the sleeves rolled up his forearms.
“And who might you be, exactly?” you ask, tilting your head slightly in confusion.
“Excuse my lack of introduction. My name is Coriolanus Snow. Jack’s best friend.”
You quirk an eyebrow, exhaling a laugh, “But Lem is Jack’s best friend.”
The blonde man chuckles, taking a step closer to you, “Well, maybe there’s a lot about Jack you don’t know about just yet.”
You narrow your eyes at this Coriolanus Snow, not caring that your shoulder collides with him as you swerve around his tall figure. You walk briskly back to the main house, wondering how this mystery man has yet to be brought up. When you enter the front door, Jackie is holding John Jr. in the foyer.
“I was just looking for you, dear,” she says, “Jack is asking for you.”
“So I’ve heard,” you raise your eyebrows at Jackie, and John Jr. reaches for you. You poke the boy on the tip of his nose.
Jackie gives you a confused look, but you’re quick to explain, “Some man outside said that Jack was. He isn’t Secret Service.”
Realization crosses her soft features, “Ah, Coriolanus, I’m guessing?”
“You’d be correct.”
“He’s a long-time friend of Jack’s from Harvard. I’m surprised you haven’t heard of him. His father was a New York senator for years.”
“Can’t say I’m too familiar with the Snows,” you purse your lips together, “But if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go see what Jack needs me for.”
Jackie lifts John Jr.’s hand to wave goodbye to you, and you give him a big smile, waving back. You walk through the den to the staircase, trodding up the stairs until you reach the landing. The office is immediately to your right, and when you approach the door, you knock. When you do, the slightly ajar door opens wide enough to see Jack laughing and conversing with someone in the room.
“I don’t mean to interrupt-“ you begin as you step inside the office, but you still yourself quickly.
Your eyes meet Coriolanus Snow’s steely blue ones as he leans against Jack’s desk, his forearms bearing his weight. His head is turned to you, his face appearing as if he were shocked by your arrival.
You clear your throat, fixing your gaze back onto your original point of interest, “But I was told you were requesting my presence?”
“Yes, I was,” Jack smiles at you from his spot in his desk chair, “I’d like you to meet Coriolanus Snow, a great friend and colleague of mine. We attended Harvard way back when.”
Coriolanus stands up, straightening himself out. You notice he has an air about him that oozes confidence and prestige. His presence and towering height would seem intimidating to some upon the first meeting. Not to you, however. With your life focus being on politics, you’re quite desensitized from men and their faux personas.
“Nice to meet you,” you bite back a remark about already meeting Jack’s friend and stick out a hand, face blank and expressionless, “I currently attend Harvard myself.”
“Coriolanus, this is the bright Ph.D. student I was telling you about. She will be here until the New Year,” Jack says, a prideful grin on his face as he motions to you, “Be nice to her, she’s known to hold her ground.”
“I can tell,” Coriolanus gives Jack a close-lipped smile, his eyes averting to you.
You stand by Jack almost protectively, unsure of how to feel about the blonde man before you. The fact he managed to beat you inside and upstairs when you left him outside first made you wonder. Coriolanus’s physique in itself is alluring and piques your interest. He also seems quick-witted and the type to be a few steps ahead of everyone. It’s not hard to gauge this just from a few exchanged words. You’ve been studying and shadowing long enough to know who you’re interacting with. You study political science, for crying out loud. You know a born and bred power-hungry man when you see one. But at the end of the day, they’re just flesh and blood like those outside of the game. That’s the historian part of you trying not to judge Coriolanus so hard. You don’t know all the facts yet. If Jack is friends with him, he may not be so bad, despite the dark vibe he gives off. But you want to figure out why he appears so stiff.
“Coriolanus will be staying with us until New Year,” Jack turns to you, patting your back as he notices your shift in mood, “You don’t mind some extra company, do ya?”
“Not at all,” you smile sweetly at your mentor before turning to Coriolanus, “Besides, there’s still a lot about you that I don’t know about just yet. And I’d love to hear all about it.”
Jack hums in agreement. Coriolanus raises his eyebrows at you, and you raise yours back. He clears his throat, standing up slightly straighter than previously.
“I can always pour us some wine, and we can discuss some lighthearted details before turning in,” Coriolanus offers you, “If that’s okay with you, of course.”
“That sounds lovely. If you gentlemen will excuse me, I must grab my belongings from outside, and then I’ll be available in the den, Coriolanus.”
Jack and Coriolanus watch as you leave the room, closing the door behind you. Jack feels fairly content and is proud of his esteemed shadow getting along with his best friend. Or, appearing to be, anyway. Coriolanus is silent and remains neutral in his facial expression. He carefully turns the idea of you over and over in his head. There’s something to your character that intrigues him. And he’ll be damned if he doesn’t figure it out.
When Jack and Coriolanus wrap up their conversation, you’re getting settled in the den. You’re curled up on the couch in front of the fireplace, continuing your book from earlier. You circle a sentence that catches your attention, gnawing on the tip of the pen as you think of what Jack could have meant by this specific statement. You’re ripped from your thoughts when a hand delicately holds a glass of blood-red wine in front of you.
You abruptly close your book, taking the glass of wine, “Thank you.”
You don’t look at Coriolanus as he sits down, and he does so quietly without breaking his eyes from you. He keeps his focus on you as he sips his wine, and you can feel him do so as you stare into the flames in front of the couch.
“So,” Coriolanus clears his throat, “How long have you known Jack?”
You pause, taking your time to swallow your wine before glancing over to Coriolanus with little to no expression. You flash him a closed-lip smile before setting your glass down on the table, “Don’t ask questions you already know the answers to.”
Coriolanus is taken aback, not showing it other than his raised brows before responding, “I see. And what makes you think I already know the answer to that?”
“Despite what society may think, a woman isn’t as daft as she appears to be. Given a man in her presence is smart enough to know that she isn’t, anyway,” you stare at him, unblinking, “No offense Senator Snow, but I know you’re a man of Harvard. And you know I’m a woman of Harvard, so let’s cut the chit-chat.”
Coriolanus slides his tongue across his teeth underneath his closed mouth before chuckling smartly, “I can see why Jack chose you. And you’re right, I did know the answer. But not every source is reliable.”
You lean down to retrieve your drink, “And why would Jack be an unreliable source?”
Coriolanus shrugs, “Well, as I’m sure you know, Jack knows his way around the ladies.”
“Am I supposed to be offended by this common knowledge, Mister Snow?” you swirl your wine around in the glass, peering up at him warningly.
“Of course not,” he furrows his brows, shaking his head in light disgust, “But you’re not unattractive by any means, miss.”
You scoff, “I’m very well aware. But your suggestion that I would entertain a superior I’m studying for one thing is pretty crass.”
Coriolanus waves a dismissive hand, “You know how Jack is-”
“Yes, I do,” you say sternly, “However, I’d never involve myself in nonsense.”
“And why is that?”
You tilt your head at the man, laughing in awe at his brazenness, “For starters, he has a loving and caring wife. Someone I rather respect and admire, actually.”
Coriolanus nods, sipping his wine without a word. It’s not the only reason, of course. But it takes anyone with common sense to know why you wouldn’t so much as poke Jack with a ten-foot stick. Yet you still decide to take this friend of Jack’s by surprise.
“And besides,” you shrug, “I prefer blondes,” you say plainly, throwing back the remainder of your wine as Coriolanus fights to keep his jaw from dropping.
“Now,” you lean against your knee that’s crossed over your other leg, holding your empty glass out to Coriolanus, “I’m studying the man and have studied him for years already. So, how about you tell me something I don’t know, hm?”
It takes a little while for Coriolanus to warm up to your snarky attitude, given he is the reason you have one. But you also take some time to soften up yourself. You aren’t always so bitey- not unless deeply provoked. And all that Coriolanus Snow has done is provoke you as long as you’ve known him, which has only been a few hours. But the more the two of you talk and drink, the more you both begin to unravel. It takes about three glasses of vintage wine to make Coriolanus crack a genuine smile for the first time in front of you. Which, by all means, was not normal for him, especially around someone he just met. More so around a woman in general. However, just as you know there’s something to Coriolanus, he knows there’s something to you as well. And he has barely even scratched the surface.
“One night during his campaign, he had a little too much to drink at a dinner, and his accent was so thick I had to translate,” Coriolanus says, his chin resting in his hand. His arm is propped on the arm of the couch that you are perched on where he now also sits. Coriolanus is far enough from you to be civil but close enough for you to feel the heat radiating from him. For someone with such a cold demeanor, he could put the fireplace to shame.
You cover your mouth to stifle a laugh, “That’s actually quite funny, considering how thick it is in general. I can’t imagine how it must sound while he’s a few sheets to the wind.”
“Exactly,” Coriolanus lifts his finger from his glass to point at you, “But in actuality, it was a test.”
You look at him confused as you pour a fourth glass for yourself, “How so?”
“Jack wanted to make sure I knew what to say to voters and donors,” Coriolanus says, finishing his wine.
You offer to pour him more, to which he accepts, “Why would that matter?”
“He knew I was planning to run this year.”
You set the bottle of wine down, “To run?” you repeat, openly laughing now, “For what? Cabinet?”
“No. President.”
The burn of alcohol shoots pitifully through your sinuses, nearly exiting your nose as you struggle to cover your obvious laugh. You sniff harshly, covering your mouth and nose with the back of your hand as you swallow the remainder of the wine, recovering the best you can before answering.
“Normally, I’d believe a senator who says that, but before today I had no idea who you were, Coriolanus,” you look at him incredulously, “The election is eleven months away now. You need to, and pardon me when I say this, light a fire under your ass.”
Now it’s Coriolanus’s turn to laugh, “Shocking you’ve never heard of me, considering you’re a political science guru.”
“Shocking that I’ve never heard of you, considering you’re a senator of the United States of America under John F. Kennedy and running for the thirty-sixth President of the United States,”  you bark in response, your initial disliking of this man rising back to the surface.
Coriolanus’s jaw jerks to the side before he looks down in his lap, nodding to himself, “No, you’re right. I do need to light a fire under my ass.”
You shrug, finishing your wine and not bothering for another glass.
“How about since you made me realize this, you can help me out.”
You set the empty glass on the table before sinking back into the couch, crossing your arms as you look straight at Coriolanus, “Help you out with what, exactly?”
“My campaign,” Coriolanus says.
“You’re terribly hilarious, you know. I have too much to worry about right now to help a grown man who should already have a plan if he truly wanted to win the election.”
Coriolanus goes to defend himself, but you interrupt, “Before you give me some sort of excuse, yes, I know you’re a grown man. Yes, I do have too much to worry about. I’m literally writing a book about a man and his entire life. Yes, you most definitely should already have a plan by now if you want to win.”
Coriolanus just stares at you, unsure of what to say, but again you give your two cents, “And yes, as much as I probably shouldn’t, I will help you. But you will owe me big time. Got it?”
It takes a moment for Coriolanus to realize you’ve agreed to help out, but when he does, there’s a slight glow of gratitude in his eyes, “Thank you. I know I’m seriously behind, but I know I can do this. Especially if someone as well-endowed as you is helping me.”
“Yeah, well, I’m well-endowed in more ways than one, but politics is just the icing on the cake, sweetheart. So, let’s continue this tomorrow before I fall asleep here.”
Standing up from the couch after numerous glasses of wine has proven tricky. Your head swims, and you sway slightly from side to side. Coriolanus has to rest a gentle hand on the small of your back in order for you to steady yourself. You glance at him, letting your eyes linger in silent thanks, before collecting yourself and walking out of the den into the hallway. After putting your book and notes away, you strip your clothing and curl up under the soft duvet on your bed. Hopefully, your craving for political experience and curiosity in your interest won’t land you into trouble with Coriolanus Snow. But you’re eager to find out.

I'm not sure if it's because I've been out of touch with the lore for a while or if it's just because more information hasn't been released yet, but I'm still so confused on what's happening in the Sunset cinematic :/
putting all my ramblings under the cut because it got long lol
I've seen some people say that the Sunset facility was using the purple portal to get more radianite. And I guess that would make Brimstone's conclusion about how the root problem is Omega Valorant make sense, since if the theft of radianite stops, then A.Kingdom might no longer feel the pressure to use the portal to get more radianite? But what does that have to do with the radivores?
Considering Deadlock said "radivore response project" and the real objective of A.Kingdom was to get more radianite, does this mean the radivores weren't the end goal but rather test subjects? Like how scientists do animal testing before sending in people; were the radivores just normal animals that interacted with the portal to see if the other side was safe, that then became radivores? Or is it the opposite way around, where the radivores are the "response"? As in, A.Kingdom purposefully wants more radivores? In the emails, I think Gekko's crew was called "missing goods" or something along those lines. So A.Kingdom clearly sees some kind of value in radivores, but I can't tell if it's as a final product or as research data?
Furthermore, Deadlock's warning said "the technology will sunder them from within, no extraction chamber needed". Is the technology referring to the portal? Or is it referring to the radivores? I'm assuming the portal because the cinematic was largely focused on shutting it down (and exploding it). But what makes it particularly volatile, that Deadlock and Viper are both so sure that the facility will encounter the same fate as Svalbard?
If the portal and Gekko's radivores are made of the same material, and radivores consume radianite, is possible that the portal drains the facility's power? As in, long-range consumption of radianite? It might be why Svalbard was found to be on reserve power when Deadlock and co first arrived, and later the reserve power runs out/gets shut off. But I suppose Svalbard being on reserve power could also just mean that the bear radivore had been munching on the power supply.
This is more in reference to Unmade than Sunset, but the extraction chambers. It looks like the extraction samples were filled with the same purple stuff that makes the portal (and Gekko's summons). Were they extracting that *from* the radivores? I feel like this implies the portal material can be used for more stuff than making radivores and portals.
And this is just off-topic ish, but in one of the emails, Sova mentions an "interverse". Is that where the portal leads? When Valorant first revealed how Gekko got his summons, I think it showed a shot of Alpha and Omega Earth kind of touching. I first assumed this meant that the summons came from Omega Earth, but what if it just means they (and the rest of the radivores) come from the space in-between the two Earths? Or where Astra goes in her astral form? I'm still stuck on how the colors match, and also once Deadlock damages the portal and the surroundings go all hazy/muffled, it looks similar to how Astra sees the world in her astral form (as shown in the Lotus map trailer cinematic).
Also, what's in the crate that was pulled out of the portal? From the way the glass window shines, it looks like something is in there, but not sure if it's another radivore or what. The other crate on the ground doesn't have that shimmer, so I assume it hasn't been put through the crate yet.
Or if it has, then it means that Kingdom has already made some kind of base on the other side of the portal, wherever it leads.

April 10 was a very bad day in the life of celebrity gamer and YouTuber Atrioc (Brandon Ewing). Ewing was broadcasting one of his usual Twitch livestreams when his browser window was accidentally exposed to his audience. During those few moments, viewers were suddenly face-to-face with what appeared to be deepfake porn videos featuring female YouTubers and gamers QTCinderella and Pokimane—colleagues and, to my understanding, Ewing’s friends. Moments later, a quick-witted viewer uploaded a screenshot of the scene to Reddit, and thus the scandal was a fact.
Deepfakes refer broadly to media doctored by AI, commonly to superimpose a person’s face onto that of, say, an actor in a movie or video clip. But sadly, as reported by Vice journalist Samantha Cole, its primary function has been to create porn starring female celebrities, and perhaps more alarmingly, to visualize sexual fantasies of friends or acquaintances. Given its increasing sophistication and availability, anyone with a picture of your face now can basically turn it into a porno. “We are all fucked,” as Cole concisely puts it.
For most people, I believe, it is obvious that Ewing committed some kind of misconduct in consuming the fictive yet nonconsensual pornography of his friends. Indeed, the comments on Reddit, and the strong (justified) reactions from the women whose faces were used in the clips, testify to a deep sense of disgust. This is understandable, yet specifying exactly where the crime lies is a surprisingly difficult undertaking. In fact, the task of doing so brings to the fore a philosophical problem that forces us to reconsider not only porn, but the very nature of human imagination. I call it the pervert’s dilemma.
On the one hand, one may argue that by consuming the material, Ewing was incentivizing its production and dissemination, which, in the end, may harm the reputation and well-being of his fellow female gamers. But I doubt that the verdict in the eyes of the public would have been much softer had he produced the videos by his own hand for personal pleasure. And few people see his failure to close the tab as the main problem. The crime, that is, appears to lie in the very consumption of the deepfakes, not the downstream effects of doing so. Consuming deepfakes is wrong, full stop, irrespective of whether the people “starring” in the clips, or anyone else, find out about it.
At the same time, we are equally certain that sexual fantasies are morally neutral. Indeed, no one (except perhaps some hard-core Catholics) would have blamed Ewing for creating pornographic pictures of QTCinderella in his mind. But what is the difference, really? Both the fantasy and the deepfake are essentially virtual images produced by previous data input, only one exists in one’s head, the other on a screen. True, the latter can more easily be shared, but if the crime lies in the personal consumption, and not the external effects, this should be irrelevant. Hence the pervert’s dilemma: We think sexual fantasies are fine as long as they are only ever generated and contained in a person’s head, and abhorrent the moment they exist in the brain with the aid of somewhat realistic representation—yet we struggle to identify any morally relevant distinction to justify this assessment.
In the long run, it is likely that this will force us to reevaluate our moral attitudes to both deepfakes and sexual fantasies, at least insofar as we want to maintain consistency in our morality. There are two obvious ways in which this could go.
The first is that we simply begin to accept pornographic deepfakes as a normal way of fantasizing about sex, only that we outsource some of the work that used to happen in the brain to a machine. Considering the massive supply of (sometimes stunningly realistic) pornographic deepfakes and the ease with which they can be customized for one’s own preferences (how long before there is a DALL-E for porn?), this may be a plausible outcome. Knowing that people probably use your photos to create fictive porn may assume the same status as knowing that some people probably think of you (or look at your most recent Instagram selfie) when they masturbate—not a huge deal unless they tell it to your face. At the very least, we can imagine the production of deepfakes assuming the same status as drawing a highly realistic picture of one’s sexual fantasy—weird, but not morally abhorrent.
The second, and arguably more interesting option, is that we begin to question the moral neutrality of sexual fantasies all together. Thinking about sex was, for a long time, considered deeply sinful in Christian Europe, and has continued to be a stigma for some. It was only after the Enlightenment that whatever goes on in a person’s mind became a “private matter” beyond moral evaluation. But this is definitely an exception, historically speaking. And to some extent, we still moralize over people’s fantasies. For instance, several ethicists (and many other people I reckon), hold that sexual fantasies involving children or brutal violence are morally objectionable.
But deepfakes may give us reason to go even further, to question dirty thoughts as a general category. Since the advent of the internet, we’ve been forming a new attitude to the moral status of our personal data. Indeed, most Westerners today take it for granted that one should be in full control over information pertaining to one’s person. But wouldn’t this, strictly interpreted, also include data stored in other people’s heads? Wouldn’t it grant me a level of control over other people’s imagination?  The idea is not as wild as it first appears. Consider the Friends episode “The one with a chick and a duck,” in which Ross teases Rachel by picturing her naked against her will, claiming that it is one of the “uh, rights of the ex-boyfriend, huh?” Rachel repeatedly begs him to stop, but Ross merely responds by closing his eyes saying, “Wait, wait, now there’s 100 of you, and I’m the king.” The joke is portrayed as completely uncontroversial, with added audience laughter and all. But now, some two decades later, doesn’t it leave you with a rather bitter taste in your mouth? Indeed, in the age of information, the moral neutrality of the mind seems to be increasingly under siege. Perhaps, in another 20 years, the thought that I can do whatever I want to whomever I want in my head may strike people as morally disgusting too.
We are probably going to see some of both scenarios. There will be calls to moralize over people’s imagination. And people will probably react with less and less shock when learning about the deepfake phenomenon, even when it happens to themselves. Just compare the media coverage of deepfake porn today with that of two years ago. The (legitimate) moral panic that characterized the initial reports has almost completely vanished, despite the galloping technological development that has taken place in the meanwhile. Yet, we will probably not arrive at any moral consensus regarding deepfakes anytime soon. Indeed, it has taken us thousands of years to learn to live with human imagination, and the arrival of deepfakes puts most of those cultural protocols on their heads.
So, which of the options are preferable from the viewpoint of moral philosophy? There is no simple answer. This is in part because both options make sense, or at least have the potential to make sense (otherwise there wouldn’t be any dilemma to begin with). But it is also due to the very nature of moral judgements. Moral truths cannot be stated once and for all. On the contrary, we need to begin every day by asking them anew.
Think of it like this: We know how many electrons are in a hydrogen atom, and so we never need to ask that question again. Questions like “Who should we be?”, “What is a good human life?”, or “Can we blame people for their fantasies?”, on the other hand, are questions that need to be asked again and again by every generation. This is because moral philosophy is an activity that dies the moment we stop doing it. For our moral lifeworlds to make sense, we must consciously reevaluate them, because this activity is always dependent on the social, technological, and cultural contexts in which it takes place. So, the moment we arrive at a definitive answer to the question of which option is preferable from the standpoint of moral philosophy, moral philosophy ceases to be.
Where does all this put us in relation to Ewing, Pokimane, and QTCinderella? There is no doubt that the feelings of shame and humiliation expressed by the targets of the videos are real. And I personally do not find any reason to question the authenticity of the shame and regret expressed by Ewing. But our moral sensemaking of the situation is a different matter. And we should be open to the fact that, in 20 years, we may think very differently about these things. It all depends on how we continue to build and reevaluate our moral lifeworlds. A good first step is taking a step back and reconsidering what exactly it is we find objectionable about deepfakes.
I think the best place to start is to assess the social context in which deepfakes are used, and compare this to the context around sexual fantasies. Today, it is clear that deepfakes, unlike sexual fantasies, are part of a systemic technological degrading of women that is highly gendered (almost all pornographic deepfakes involve women). And the moral implications of this system are larger than the sum of its parts (the individual acts of consumption). Fantasies, on the other hand, are not gendered—at least we have no reliable evidence of men engaging more with sexual imagination than women do—and while the content of individual fantasies may be misogynist, the category is not so in and of itself. The immoral aspect of Ewing’s actions therefore lies not primarily in the damage it caused to the individuals portrayed, but in the partaking of a technically-supported systemic degrading of women, a system that amounts to something more than the sum of its parts.
While this is the beginning of an answer, it is not the answer. How the technology is used and fitted into our social and cultural protocols will continue to change. What Ewing did wrong cannot be answered once and for all. For tomorrow, we will need to ask again.

Integrating Solar Panels with HVAC Systems: Benefits and Considerations
Tumblr media
If you're looking to make your home more efficient, integrating solar panels with your HVAC system is one of the most impactful upgrades you can pursue. This setup allows you to power your heating and cooling equipment using renewable energy, reducing utility costs and supporting long-term energy independence. It’s more than just a green choice—it’s a smart move that aligns comfort with sustainability. In this article, you’ll get a detailed breakdown of how this integration works, why it makes financial and environmental sense, and what you should plan for if you’re considering it for your home or business.
Cutting Your HVAC Energy Bill with Solar Power
You already know your HVAC system is one of the biggest energy consumers in your building. That becomes painfully clear during peak summer and winter months when the electricity bill spikes. Pairing it with solar panels changes the math. Solar panels generate power during the day—precisely when air conditioning demand tends to be highest. By matching generation with consumption, you’re able to offset your electric usage directly.
This means less reliance on utility providers and more predictable energy expenses over time. If you're in a region with time-of-use billing, the savings can be even greater since you’re covering part of your usage during the most expensive hours. This setup reduces costs and protects you from future rate hikes.
Optimizing for Peak Usage Hours
HVAC systems usually draw the most power when solar panels are producing at full capacity. That’s an ideal pairing. Air conditioners, heat pumps, and even variable-speed units tend to cycle more frequently when temperatures peak. If you’re generating electricity during that time, you're using what your system produces in real time, avoiding the premium cost of pulling from the grid during high-demand windows.
If you add battery storage, you stretch those benefits even further. Your HVAC system can keep running in the evening using stored solar energy rather than grid power. That’s especially useful for heat pumps in colder seasons or maintaining indoor comfort overnight without tapping into peak grid pricing.
Lowering Your Carbon Footprint Without Sacrificing Comfort
Switching to a solar-powered HVAC setup isn’t just good for your wallet—it makes a noticeable impact on your carbon emissions. Traditional heating and cooling equipment tied to fossil fuel-based grid power contributes significantly to greenhouse gases. When you shift that load onto a clean energy source like solar, you're directly reducing emissions.
You don’t need to compromise on comfort to make that switch either. With high-efficiency HVAC units, smart thermostats, and programmable zones, you can fine-tune your climate control while still reducing energy draw. Solar doesn’t limit performance—it supports it in a cleaner, more affordable way.
Extending the Life of Your HVAC Equipment
When your HVAC system runs on solar energy during the day, it operates under less stress. In many integrated systems, the addition of smart inverters, advanced sensors, and programmable thermostats leads to fewer abrupt starts and stops. That translates to smoother operation and less wear on compressors and motors.
Less strain often means fewer repairs, fewer emergency service calls, and a longer service life for your units. If you're running high-efficiency systems powered by solar, you're maximizing the value of both investments. You also gain better data visibility through most solar monitoring apps, making it easier to track system performance and catch inefficiencies early.
Planning the Installation: Sizing and Compatibility
Before you start adding panels, take time to assess your HVAC load. You want to size your solar array based on your heating and cooling usage, not just your overall electricity bill. If your home runs a standard 3-ton heat pump or a central AC unit, your solar provider can calculate how many panels you’ll need to offset that load.
It’s also worth checking the age and efficiency of your HVAC unit. Older equipment won’t benefit as much from solar integration since it draws more power and lacks smart control. If you’re planning a replacement soon, that’s the best time to combine installations. That way, your system is optimized as a package instead of trying to retrofit solar onto outdated equipment.
Financial Incentives and Tax Credits
A major benefit of going solar is the wide range of incentives available. Federal tax credits can cover up to 30% of your solar installation cost, and some states or utility providers offer additional rebates or net metering programs. When you integrate solar with HVAC upgrades, you may also qualify for energy efficiency incentives on heat pumps, variable-speed units, or smart thermostats.
Combining these programs can significantly lower your out-of-pocket costs. In some cases, the total payback period for solar-HVAC integration can shrink to five to seven years, depending on your usage patterns and available incentives. You’ll want to work with a certified installer who understands how to layer incentives across renewable energy and efficiency programs.
Maintenance and Monitoring Considerations
After your system is installed, maintenance requirements are fairly light. Solar panels need occasional cleaning to stay at peak output, and most modern inverters include self-diagnostic tools that alert you to performance drops. HVAC systems connected to solar power benefit from the same smart monitoring options, allowing you to track energy usage per device and make real-time adjustments.
You may also notice fewer maintenance issues on your HVAC system since the smoother power supply and reduced peak strain help avoid sudden failures. If you use a monitoring app from your solar provider or HVAC manufacturer, you’ll often receive reports that highlight usage spikes, giving you better control over long-term energy habits.
Why This Integration Makes Sense
Cuts peak-hour energy costs for HVAC
Improves system efficiency and lifespan
Reduces carbon emissions and utility dependency
Qualifies for multiple incentives and rebates
Enhances property value and buyer interest
Enables performance tracking and smart automation
Provides backup options with storage during outages
In Conclusion
Pairing solar panels with your HVAC system isn’t just a trend—it’s a reliable way to lower your operating costs, improve performance, and future-proof your home. By generating your own power and using it to run your largest energy-consuming equipment, you get more control, better savings, and a lighter footprint. Whether you’re starting from scratch or upgrading an existing system, this integration is one of the smartest investments you can make in your building’s comfort and sustainability.

How Dispatching Trucks Efficiently Can Boost Profit Margins
Tumblr media
Introduction :
In today’s fast-paced freight industry, profitability doesn’t come just from having a truck and hitting the road — it comes from how efficiently that truck is dispatched. Trucking companies, especially those run by owner-operators and small fleets, often face a crucial bottleneck: inefficient dispatching. Mismanaged routes, poor communication, empty miles, and missed load opportunities are just a few factors that drain time and revenue.
But what if all of that could change? What if dispatching became your greatest tool for maximizing profit margins instead of your biggest headache?
That’s exactly what efficient truck dispatching does — and in this blog, we’ll dive deep into how optimized dispatching improves every aspect of your operations, drives cost savings, and significantly boosts your bottom line. If you’re serious about profitability, this is where you begin.
Understanding the Role of Dispatching in Trucking
Dispatching isn’t just about matching trucks with loads. It’s the backbone of your entire operation. A dispatcher determines your routes, schedules, communication flow, load quality, fuel usage, and even your driver’s satisfaction.
Think of dispatching as the central control tower of your trucking business. When it operates smoothly, everything else flows — drivers move efficiently, freight gets delivered on time, and payments are processed faster. But when it breaks down, delays, empty miles, and financial losses pile up quickly.
Efficient dispatching focuses on strategic planning, real-time tracking, and proactive communication — ensuring that no asset is wasted and every mile driven contributes to your revenue.
1. Reducing Deadhead Miles to Save Fuel and Time
One of the most significant ways dispatching boosts profit margins is by reducing deadhead miles — those dreaded trips with an empty trailer. Every mile without cargo is a mile spent burning fuel without making money. Multiply that over weeks and months, and the loss becomes staggering.
Efficient dispatchers plan back-to-back loads, arrange triangular routes, and use advanced load boards to ensure there’s always a load waiting at the next stop. This smart planning keeps trucks full, fuel consumption optimized, and every trip profitable.
By minimizing empty runs, companies can increase their revenue per mile and reduce wear-and-tear costs — both of which directly improve profit margins.
2. Smart Route Planning for Maximum Efficiency
In trucking, time is money. And poor routing wastes both. A dispatcher who isn’t using the latest tools and GPS data may send drivers on longer routes, congested highways, or through toll-heavy areas. The result? Higher fuel costs, late deliveries, and unhappy clients.
On the other hand, efficient dispatching uses route optimization software and real-time traffic data to chart the fastest, most cost-effective paths. Some systems even consider weather, road closures, and delivery windows.
The outcome? Reduced drive time, improved customer satisfaction, and most importantly, lower operational costs that lead to better margins.
3. Maximizing Load Opportunities with Real-Time Scheduling
A truck parked at a truck stop waiting for a load is losing money every hour. Efficient dispatching ensures that trucks aren’t waiting — they’re always on the move with purpose.
By staying connected to real-time load boards and broker networks, efficient dispatchers can secure loads quickly and align them with your location, equipment, and schedule. This proactive scheduling reduces downtime and keeps your revenue stream steady.
For example, at MBM Dispatching , we constantly monitor freight availability to ensure our clients are never idle. This constant motion equals consistent income and higher monthly earnings.
4. Better Broker Negotiation for Higher Rates
Dispatchers aren’t just planners — they’re negotiators. An experienced dispatcher can command better freight rates by knowing the market, understanding broker behavior, and leveraging your track record.
Instead of settling for low-paying loads, efficient dispatching means your truck is booked with freight that pays well and comes from reputable sources. This alone can boost weekly earnings by hundreds or even thousands of dollars, depending on your lanes and truck type.
Increased rates with better-paying freight is one of the fastest and most direct ways to improve your profit margin without increasing miles driven.
5. Eliminating Administrative Headaches
Dispatching involves more than logistics — it includes paperwork, compliance, insurance documentation, BOLs, invoicing, and follow-ups. These tasks consume valuable time that could be spent running and expanding the business.
Efficient dispatchers often handle these admin duties as part of their service, streamlining back-office processes and ensuring paperwork is always accurate and on time.
With MBM Dispatching , clients don’t worry about carrier packets, invoicing, or rate confirmations. We take care of it all, allowing truckers to focus on driving — not desk work.
6. Real-Time Driver Support and Issue Resolution
Efficient dispatching goes beyond planning — it involves real-time problem-solving. Whether it’s a last-minute load cancellation, a breakdown, or an ELD issue, dispatchers act fast to resolve the situation and get drivers back on the road.
With fast support, small issues stay small, and drivers remain productive. This agility prevents lost loads, keeps broker trust high, and reduces revenue loss caused by avoidable downtime.
Dispatchers that are proactive — not reactive — ensure the entire operation runs like a well-oiled machine, increasing trust, output, and profitability.
7. Smoother Compliance and Fewer Violations
Non-compliance with DOT or FMCSA regulations can lead to hefty fines, delays, or even truck shutdowns. Efficient dispatching includes compliance oversight, helping drivers stay within HOS limits, manage ELDs correctly, and avoid safety red flags.
Staying compliant protects your authority, lowers insurance premiums, and keeps your trucks running without interruption — all of which contribute to stronger margins over time.
8. Higher Driver Satisfaction and Retention
Believe it or not, happy drivers lead to higher profits. Dispatchers who communicate clearly, provide predictable schedules, and avoid unrealistic deadlines help maintain driver morale.
High driver turnover is expensive. Recruiting, onboarding, and training a new driver costs thousands of dollars and causes productivity dips. Efficient dispatching reduces turnover by creating a smoother experience for drivers, leading to long-term team loyalty and lower hiring costs.
9. Scalability for Growing Fleets
When your dispatching is efficient, scaling becomes easier. You don’t need to reinvent your system every time you add a truck. With strong dispatch processes in place, each new truck becomes a revenue generator instead of a management nightmare.
Dispatchers who use fleet management tools, centralized communication platforms, and automated systems allow for easy onboarding of new vehicles, reducing chaos and increasing scalability.
10. Unlocking Long-Term Business Growth
Finally, efficient dispatching allows owners and managers to focus on growth — not just daily operations. Instead of being trapped in constant problem-solving, you can analyze business performance, explore new routes, negotiate long-term contracts, or plan expansions.
This strategic freedom is where real profit margin expansion occurs — not just by saving a few dollars per mile, but by unlocking opportunities for exponential revenue.
At MBM Dispatching , we’ve seen clients grow from one truck to five within a year — all because they trusted us with the details while they focused on the big picture.
Conclusion: Dispatch Smarter, Earn More
In the trucking world, margins are tight and competition is fierce. But those who leverage efficient dispatching aren’t just surviving — they’re thriving. From minimizing deadhead miles to improving rate negotiation and compliance, dispatching is the secret weapon behind the most successful fleets.
If you’re ready to take control of your profit margins, it’s time to stop dispatching reactively and start dispatching efficiently. Whether you’re an owner-operator or managing a small fleet, partnering with professionals who understand the value of every mile can make all the difference.
That’s exactly what MBM Dispatching offers: a smarter, more profitable way to run your trucking business in 2025 and beyond.

Street smarts

Street smarts
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dozens of major research labs dot the streets of Kendall Square, a Cambridge, Massachusetts, neighborhood in which MIT partially sits. But for Andres Sevtsuk’s City Form Lab, the streets of Kendall Square themselves, and those in other cities, are subjects for research.
Sevtsuk is an associate professor of urban science and planning at MIT and a leading expert in urban form and spatial analysis. His work examines how the design of built environments affects social life within them. The way cities are structured influences whether street-level retail commerce can thrive, whether and how much people walk, and how much they encounter each other face to face.
“City environments that allow us to get more things done on foot tend to not only make people healthier, but they are more sustainable in terms of emissions and energy use, and they provide more social encounters between different members of society, which is fundamental to democracy,” Sevtsuk says.
However, many things Sevtsuk studies do not come with much pre-existing data. While some aspects of cities are studied extensively — vehicle traffic, for instance — fewer people have studied how urban planning affects walking and cycling, which most city governments seek to increase.
To counter this trend, several years ago Sevtsuk and some research assistants began studying foot traffic in several cities, as well as Kendall Square — how much people walk, where they go, and why. Most urban walking trips are destination-driven: People go to offices, eateries, and transit stops. But a lot of pedestrian activity is also recreational and social, such as sitting in a square, people-watching, and window-shopping. Eventually Sevtsuk emerged with an innovative model of pedestrian activity, which is based around these spatial networks of interaction and calibrated to observed people counts.
He and his colleagues then scaled up their model and took it to major cities around the world, starting with the whole downtown of Melbourne, Australia. The model now includes detailed street characteristics — sidewalk dimensions, the presence of ground floor businesses, landscaping, and more — and Sevtsuk has also helped apply it to Beirut and, most recently, New York City.
The project is typical of Sevtsuk’s research, which creates new ways to bring data to urban design. In 2023, Sevtsuk and his colleagues also released a novel open-source tool, called TILE2NET, to automatically map city sidewalks from aerial imagery. He has even studied interactions on the MIT campus, in a 2022 paper quantifying how spatial relatedness between departments and centers affects communications among them.
“Applying spatial analytics to city design is timely today because when it comes to cutting carbon emissions and energy consumption, or improving public health, or supporting local business on city streets, they relate to how cities are configured,” Sevtsuk says. “Urban designers have historically not been very focused on quantifying those effects. But studying these dynamics can help us understand how social interactions in cities work and how proposed interventions may impact a community.”
For his research and teaching, Sevtsuk received tenure at MIT earlier this year.
Growing and living in cities
Sevtsuk is originally from Tartu, Estonia, where his experiences helped attune him to the street life of cities.
“I do think where I come from enhanced my interest in urban design,” Sevtsuk says. “I grew up in public housing. That very much framed my appreciation for public amenities. Your home was where you slept, but everything else, where you played as a child or found cultural entertainment as a teenager, was in the public sphere of the city.”
Initially interested in studying architecture, Sevtsuk received a BArch degree from the Estonian Academy of Arts, then a BArch from the Ecole d’Architecture de la Ville et des Territoires, in Paris. Over time, he became increasingly interested in city design and planning, and enrolled as a master’s student at MIT, earning his SMArchS degree in 2006 while studying how technology could help us better understand urban social processes.
“MIT had a very strong research orientation for even masters-level students,” Sevtsuk says. “It is famous for that. I came because I was drawn to the opportunity to get hands-on into research around city design.”
Sevtsuk stayed at MIT for his doctoral studies, earning his PhD in 2010, with the late William Mitchell as his principal advisor. “Bill was interested in the influence of technology on cities,” says Sevtsuk, who appreciated the wide-ranging intellectual milieu that sprang up around Mitchell. “A lot of fascinating and intellectually experimental people gravitated around Bill.”
With his PhD in hand, Sevtstuk then joined an MIT collaboration at the new Singapore University of Technology and Design, a couple of years after it first opened.
“That was a lot of fun, building a new university, and we were teaching the first cohort and first courses,” Sevtsuk says. “It was an exciting project.”
Living in Asia also helped open doors for some hands-on research in Singapore and Indonesia, where Sevtsuk worked with city governments and the World Bank on urban planning and design projects in several cities.
“There was not a lot of data, and yet we had to think about how spatial analyses could be deployed to support planning decisions,” Sevtsuk says. “It forced you to think how to apply methods without abundant data in the traditional sense. In retrospect some of the software around pedestrian modeling we developed was influenced by these constraints, from understanding the minimum data inputs needed to capture people’s mobility dynamics in a neighborhood.”
From Melbourne to the Infinite Corridor
Returning to the U.S., Sevtsuk took a faculty position at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design in 2015. He then joined the MIT faculty in 2019.
Throughout his career, Sevtsuk’s projects have consistently added insight to existing data or created all-new repositories of data for wider use. His team’s work in Melbourne leveraged a rare case of a city with copious pedestrian data of its own. There, Sevtsuk found the model not only explained foot traffic patterns but could also be used to forecast how changes in the built environment, such as new development projects, could affect foot traffic in different parts of the city.
In Beirut, the modeling work on improving community streets is part of post-disaster recovery after the Beirut port explosion of 2020. In New York, Sevtsuk and his colleagues are studying the largest pedestrian network in the U.S., covering all five boroughs of the city. The TILE2NET project, meanwhile, provides information for planners and experts in an area — sidewalk mapping — which most places do not have data on either.
When it came to studying the MIT campus, Sevtsuk brought new a new approach to a subject with an Institute legacy: An earlier campus professor, Thomas Allen of the MIT Sloan School of Management, did pioneering research about workspace design and collaboration. Sevtsuk and his team, however, looked at the larger campus as a network.
Linking spatial relations and email communication, they found that not only does the level of interaction between MIT departments and labs increase when those units are spatially closer to each other, but it also increases when their members are more likely to walk past each other’s offices on their daily routes to work or when they patronize the same eateries on campus.
Urban design for the people
Sevtsuk thinks about his own work as being not just data-driven but part of a larger refashioning of the field of urban design. In American cities, urban design may still be associated with the large-scale redevelopment of neighborhoods that took place in the first few postwar decades: massive freeways tearing through cities and dislocating older business districts, and large housing and office projects undertaken in the name of modernization and tax revenue increases but not in the interests of existing residents and workers. Many of these projects were disastrous for urban communities.
By the 1960s and 1970s, urban planning programs around the country attempted to quell the inadequacy of large-scale urban design and instead focused on the social and economic needs of communities first. The role of urban design was somewhat sidelined in this transition. But instead of giving up on urban design as a tool for community improvement, Sevtsuk thinks that planning and urban design research can help uncover the important ways in which design can support communities in their daily lives as much as community development initiatives and policies can.
“There was a turn in the field of planning away from urban design as a central area of focus, toward more sociologically grounded community-driven approaches,” Sevtsuk says. “And for good reasons. But during these decades, some of the most anti-urban, car-oriented, and resource-intensive built environments in the U.S. were created, which we now need to deal with.”
He adds: “In my work I try to quantify effects of urban design on people, from mobility outcomes, to generating social encounters, to supporting small local businesses on city streets. In my research group we try to connect urban design back to the qualities that people and communities care about. Faced with the profound climate challenges today, we must better understand the influence of urban design on society — on carbon emissions, on health, on social exchange, and even on democracy, because it’s such a critical dimension.”
A dedicated teacher, Sevtsuk works with students with broad backgrounds and interests from across the Institute. One of his main classes, 11.001 (Introduction to Urban Design and Development), draws students from many departments — including computer science, civil engineering, and management — who want to contribute to sustainable and equitable cities. He also teaches an applied class on modeling pedestrian activity, and his research group draws students and researchers from many countries.
“What resonates with students is that when we look closely at the complex organized systems of cities, we can make sense of how they work,” Sevtsuk says. “But we can also figure out how to change them, how to nudge them toward collective improvement. And many MIT students are eager to mobilize their amazing technical skills towards that quest.”

By analyzing this data, AI algorithms can assess the current state of the road network and make decisions on the most efficient routes for each delivery.
For example, if traffic congestion is detected on a particular route, AI can instantly reroute the vehicle to avoid delays. Similarly, if weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow are likely to slow down travel, AI can adjust the route to ensure timely deliveries while prioritizing safety.
B. Machine Learning and Predictive Analytics
Machine learning is a core component of AI-driven route optimization. Over time, AI algorithms learn from historical data, such as previous delivery times, vehicle performance, and traffic patterns, to make increasingly accurate predictions. This predictive capability allows AI systems to forecast potential disruptions and adjust routes proactively.
For example, AI may recognize that a specific route experiences heavy traffic during certain hours of the day, allowing it to suggest alternative routes during those periods. By learning from past experiences, AI-driven systems become more effective at optimizing routes and avoiding common pitfalls.
C. Multi-Stop Route Optimization
Many logistics operations involve vehicles making multiple stops throughout the day, and optimizing these multi-stop routes can be challenging. AI-driven systems are particularly effective at handling complex route optimization scenarios that involve numerous stops. By considering factors such as delivery priorities, time windows, and vehicle capacity, AI can generate the most efficient routes that minimize travel distance and time.
For example, a delivery truck tasked with making 10 stops in a city may have several route options. AI-driven systems calculate the most efficient sequence of stops, reducing the overall distance traveled and ensuring that deliveries are made in the optimal order. This not only saves fuel but also ensures that high-priority deliveries are made on time.
4. Challenges and Considerations
While AI-driven route optimization offers numerous benefits, there are some challenges and considerations that companies must keep in mind. Implementing AI-powered systems requires an investment in technology, software, and training for staff. Additionally, data accuracy is critical for AI systems to function effectively. Inaccurate or outdated data can lead to suboptimal route recommendations and increased operational inefficiencies.
Furthermore, companies must ensure that their AI systems are scalable and flexible enough to adapt to changing business needs. As supply chains become more complex, AI systems must be able to handle increased volumes of data and manage more intricate routing scenarios.
AI-driven route optimization is transforming the logistics and supply chain industries by enabling companies to minimize costs, maximize efficiency, and enhance customer satisfaction. Through real-time data analysis, machine learning, and predictive analytics, AI systems provide businesses with the tools they need to optimize delivery routes, reduce fuel consumption, and navigate logistical challenges. One of the primary advantages of the route optimization approach is its ability to adapt to real-time changes. Traffic congestion Key Software Systems LLC, road closures, and unexpected delays are inevitable in the world of transportation. Traditional route planning methods often struggle to accommodate these disruptions, leading to inefficiencies and missed deadlines. However, route optimization software continuously monitors traffic conditions and dynamically adjusts routes to minimise delays and keep operations running smoothly.
Moreover, the route optimization approach is not limited to optimising routes for individual vehicles. It can also optimise routes for multiple vehicles simultaneously. Whether it's a fleet of delivery trucks or a team of service technicians, the software can generate optimised routes for each vehicle, taking into account factors such as vehicle capacity and driver availability.
