Lover is the second mini album released by Superbia Entertainment’s five-member boy group, ULTRAVIOLET. It dropped on November 9th, 2017, and featured the title track Eyes Wide Shut, as well as five other tracks.

The overall concept this era was odd to say the least, and featured an aesthetic best described as technological surrealism. The music video was a stunning but confusing amalgamation of technological imagery, glitching text effects, and hypnagogic themes that seemed to blur the boundaries between dreams and reality.

ERA/AESTHETIC NOTES

Despite the complexity and the confusing nature of the concept, the styling and overall visual aesthetic was kept pretty consistent. There was an emphasis on screens in the music video and in the teaser photos, especially when considering the manner in which the members were posed amongst TV screens in their individual concept photos.

The hair colors for this era were as follows:

King - Black

Siyun - Rich blue

Taesong - Silver

Minsung - Black with silvery strands

Jamie - Mid-toned purple

Some of the key points in styling were colorfully tinted glasses, long coats, messy, wet-looking hair, and slightly glossy makeup.

Many of the shots in the actual title music video were especially artful. Most notably, there were a variety of scenes that incorporated the usage of TV and computer screens, including transitions into them to reveal another member, and an iconic scene with Siyun lying down on top of a multitude of TV’s with surreal, colorful images glitching behind him.

The fan theories were honestly pretty wild. Many of them surrounded identifying when a scene was supposed to be considered dream or reality. Despite the potentially playful title of the album, UV truly focused on the darker side of things, including cognitive and romantic dissonance, as well as the shifting nature of reality as intertwined with technology and the advance of media.

The choreography is notably very difficult. It relies on the members having extremely fine-tuned body control, and has been described as similar to Taemin’s Move in its emphasis on fluidity and difficulty. However, there were instances of sharper movement that didn’t seem to match the portions of the song when they occurred. Many fans attributed this dissonance, as well, to UV’s overall concept, in order to truly emphasis the point that not everything can always be as it seems.

Taesong and Siyun’s rapping portions were especially notorious for being killer for fans.

Honestly...a lot of fans went pretty feral this era. While more skin was out, technically, during their debut era, their concept wasn’t obviously sexy for that fact. This era, the boys truly allowed their more mature and alluring sides to take the spotlight, and the sheer number of hard stans that joined the fandom when the music video dropped was...almost astonishing.

Jamie worked on the production of Eyes Wide Shut with successful producer and member of X2, Lim Junsik. Additionally, Minsung worked extensively on the lyrics for this album.

The physical album packing was gorgeous. There were two versions, a dark orange, blue, and black version, and a white, blue, and purple version.There was a particular Minsung photo card that became very sought after, as he’s showing a bit of collarbone in the selfie, and everyone knows Minsung stans go feral over the slightest amount of skin.

Bang Chan and I - 5

The training room the next morning was even warmer than usual. Seojun had beat you into work this morning and was already warming up by the time that you walked in and handed him a coffee. He smiled and ran towards you.

"Is it iced today, pleeease tell me you got your Oppa an iced coffee, Y/N?" He was practically jumping up and down from the thought of cold coffee.

"Yes, it is iced coffee. Just like it has been for the past couple of days," you stated, handing him the cup. He started gulping it down while you put your bag in the back of the room and took your sweats off. You thought you saw him looking your way when you were taking your sweater off but you couldn't be sure. And if he was, it only made you more confident. You weren't too confident in your body but you didn't care if someone looked at your exposed skin. You didn't have feelings for Seojun other than friendship but you loved when other people liked the way you look. You chose a pair of dance shorts for today that hit at the top of your thighs and a flowy crop top with a matching sports bra underneath. You knew you looked cute today, you dressed this way with hopes that Chan would notice. Not that he had said he was interested in you, but maybe you could will it into existence.

You warmed up with Seojun and went over the dance before the boys arrived. Everything was ready by the time the knock on the door sounded, thirty minutes later. Chan entered the room first, followed by the rest of Stray Kids. The familiar butterflies found their way to your stomach when all the members were in the room. But this was no time to fangirl, yes they were your favorite group, but you had to remain cool today. There was a lot that needed to be accomplished.

The boys introduced themselves one by one, the last was Felix. He ran up to you and gave you a hug. "Chan has told us so much about you, Y/N. It is great to meet you," he whispered in your ear, making you blush and laugh as he stepped away. Chan shot him a look and he went back to join the group.

Seojun introduced himself to the group and motioned for you to take the lead. You remembered what he had said about wanting to fool the boys into thinking you had been here for longer than you actually had. You stood tall and introduced yourself to them.

"We are going to be going over the basic dance today and once everyone has that down we will work on the individual moves and positions after that. For now, I am going to arrange everyone in your starting positions for the song and we will learn from there." You took care to lead everyone to their spots on the floor and didn't realize your face was as serious as it was until you lead Chan to his spot and he brushed his hand against the back of yours. You looked up at him and smiled as he took his place.

You went to the front of the room and started some basic music to get them to warm up before starting. Seojun was to your right as you lead everyone in warmups. He was smiling a lot more than usual today. You made a note to ask him about that later. After everyone was ready to know you turned around to face the group.

"Okay, so I think it is going to be best that Seojun and I show you the full dance first and then from there we can get started on the finer details." You went over and started their song. You and Seojun moved around the floor taking extra care on your facial expressions to convey the right emotions for the song. The boys watched closely as your bodies moved in sync to the music and when it ended, they were quiet for a moment, then everyone was talking all at once. You could only pick out bits and pieces and you couldn't tell who said what but someone said that they liked the dance and someone said they thought you and Seojun danced really well together. You pretended to ignore it but you noticed that Chan had heard it and a flash of annoyance showed on his face before he quickly controlled it. Very interesting, you thought.

They got up after they were done discussing it and you all got to work. By lunch, they all had the basics of the dance down. They were quick learners. Han, IN, and Seojun offered to go down and grab lunch for everyone before they started back up again. When they had left, Felix made his way to you with Chan behind him.

"Y/N, Chan and I were wondering if you could go over the dance with us while we wait? I learn the dances slower than the other boys and I want to make sure I am not missing anything." Felix asked you.

"Yeah! I would love to!" You watched them as they did the dance this time making sure to pay attention to small details. Felix did have all of the basics down and was doing good so far, but Chan was struggling with a body roll. You were sure you saw him doing it right before everyone left but it didn't hurt to slow it down. You stopped the music and stood next to him.

"This time when you do the roll, Chan, watch the way that my body moves and see if you can replicate it." He nodded and watched as your rolled your body in the right position. You were vaguely aware that Felix was smiling behind you and were sure that this could be considered some form of suggestive looking but decided to ignore it. You wanted to be sure that Chan could do the dance, that was it. Chan watched intently as your body relayed the move, his eyes traveling down your body as the roll happened. You couldn't help but blush at the way his eyes traveled downwards and back up again slowly. Were there other people in the room beside you and Chan, yes. Did that matter to you at that moment? Absolutely not. You felt like it was just you two in the whole world.

"Ahh, I will start the music and see if you can do it now, okay?" You broke the trance and fast-forwarded to the right part of the song. You watched Chan as he danced and executed the roll to almost perfection. "G-great job! You did it perfectly that time." You blushed and looked away.

The boys came back from getting food and put it in the middle of the floor for everyone to grab what they wanted. You noticed that Minho was giving you some pretty weird looks but it didn't really bother you too much. You knew that if anyone was going to be sassy with you, it would be Minho.

The rest of the day went smoothly as everyone nailed the moves. It was not nearly as late as it usually was when you finally ended for the day. Seojun pulled you aside after you had finished.

"Hey, you did amazing today. I would not have even known that you were new by the way that you lead things. The next song that needs to be choreographed is supposed to be a solo job. I would like you to take it and start planning things as soon as you can in your spare time. We won't have many late nights since we are training this song already. Make sure you use your time well."

You smiled so big when Seojun told you that. "I can't wait! Which song is it?" you asked him.

"You will be doing Red Lights, it is the song that Chan and Hyunjin sing together. It should be pretty simple since only certain parts need moves for the music video. Other than that, they won't really be performing it."

"Okay," you said calmly, even though the butterflies had invaded again, "I will get started on listening to it tonight."

Seojun made his way out of the room along with Seungmin and IN, as they had voice lessons before going home for the night. Minho, Han, Changbin, and Felix were sat in the back of the room talking. You found yourself in the front of the room by your computer looking for the song that Seojun said was going to be your next task when Hyunjin and Chan walked up to you.

"Hey, Y/N," Hyunjin said, "We heard that you are going to be working on our song next. Are you excited to hear it?"

You couldn't tell why Chan was slowly turning red at the mention of the song. "Yeah, I was actually looking for it right now to listen to it and start getting some ideas." Chan looked absolutely panicked as he shut your laptop.

"Uh, don't listen to it now. You should take a break. You have been working so hard. You can always listen to it later." Chan said in a hurry. Hyunjin looked like he was holding back laughter at the whole situation.

"...Oookay then... I will listen to it later. I guess I could use a break. And I haven't been able to go home before it was dark outside all week." The thought of going home on time and getting a long night's rest was pretty appealing. Chan looked relieved when you started packing your bags to go. You put your sweat pants back on but left your sweater off. It wasn't that chilly outside right now. You said goodbye to everyone and told them to look forward to more tomorrow.

On your way home you stopped by the convenience store and grabbed some comfort snacks and soju. You honestly did deserve to treat yourself for all your hard work. A little unwinding would be totally worth it. You headed into your apartment and started to enjoy your finds. The night wound on and you got more tipsy as time passed. You learned from your first soju experience to take it slowly. You remembered Chan's reaction to the thought of listening to the song in front of everyone and it made you blush. Was it really that bad? There was only one way to find out, you grabbed your laptop from your bag and set to work finding the right one. Red Lights, Bang Chan and Hyunjin. As the music started to play you felt your jaw slowly drop to the floor. This song was incredibly sexy. You hadn't thought that Chan would produce something so sultry but here it was. The song was over quickly it seemed and you realized you were fully flushed.

You decided to listen to it a couple more times and were mapping out some general moves when there was a knock at your door. What time is it? 11 PM? Who was here at this hour? As you made your way to the door, you completely forgot that you had stripped out of your sweatpants and crop top earlier and were only wearing your strappy sports bra and short shorts. You opened the door to find a stunned-looking Chan staring back at you. His eyes roamed over your body and when you looked down, you remembered what you were wearing and blushed. You were tipsy enough that it didn't matter to you right now.

"Hey, Channie," you said, "What brings you to my door at this hour? Wanna come in?"

Chan smiled and nodded, at a loss for words. He walked into your apartment and heard the song that was playing in the background. He found the blush work its way to his face this time. "So, what do you think of the song, Y/N-ie?" Chan asked. A slow smolder working its way over his features.

"Well, I have been listening to it on repeat while I drink my soju. And I can't stop dancing to it either. I just didn't realize you would come up with a song that is... it's so..." You seemed to have something caught in your brain that wouldn't let the words come out.

"So...? So sexy?" Chan's voice was impossibly deep when he said the words out loud that my brain thought in secret. "You know, I am a human. Most people do feel the need to express themselves this way too." Was your skin the color of a tomato yet? You were sure it was getting there. Chan started making his way towards your laptop. He restarted the song then walked to you and grabbed your hand. Where was this confidence coming from him? You had never seen him like this before. You liked it, but you weren't used to it.

He pulled you closer to him, gauging your thoughts about the situation with his eyes. You smiled as you were practically touching his chest. How were his shoulders so wide? You hadn't noticed before. "How are you feeling? Let me know if this is crossing a line. I don't think it is, but you should know you can stop me at any time."

You calmed yourself before you answered. You didn't want to let it slip at how eager you were for the night to take this turn. "I am very okay with this. I don't think you will catch me stopping you any time soon." you managed.

"Good, why don't you show me how you were dancing before I interrupted you, kitten?" Kitten? You had never been called that pet name before but it was already your favorite.
