Gay Giant by Gabriel Ebensperger. Translated by Kelley D. Salas with Mercedes Guhl. Street Noise, 2022. 9781951491161. 256pp. https://www.powells.com/book/-9781951491161?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Ebensperger's comics are big and bright and his font of choice and drawings make everything feel positive, even when he's working through some stuff. It's probably got something to do with the art being overwhelmingly, wonderfully pink.
As a little boy Ebensperger played with girls and girls toys, and people often thought he was a girl. He didn't feel that he fit in. He was a bit of a fashion trendsetter. He had a crush on both Chris Pine and Ferris Bueller at different times, and loved Jem and the Holograms. For a long time h kinda avoided admitting, even to himself, that he was gay. I don't remember a big coming out scene with his parents or family, but there's a hilarious description of the first time he masturbated, and a very touching first kiss. My favorite moments: the pages showing that he's not really a giant compared to his brothers and others (including Totoro), and, when he's a little kid, when he puts on his mom's red shoes and asks his dad to pretend it's his wedding. The whole thing has a bit of a science fiction ending that I didn't see coming (and that I don't think mentioning in this way will ruin for you).

Ultima Generazione blocca l'Autobrennero in Austria
“Tutti abbiamo diritto…

Graphic memoirs don’t get any better than this. @jim.terry.73’s COME HOME, INDIO invokes Will Eisner and Daniel Clowes all while telling a very relatable tale of upbringing while exposing you to aspects of indigenous culture. But don’t take my word for it, check out those reviews (picture 2)! Here’s another character from my light novel series, Street Noise! Her name is Pitch, who can control a giant yellow arrow that she can ride on and move in right angles! She’s so much fun to draw and I really need to do the whole gang sometime! I did Focus first, and you can find her on my tumblr by using this link!

HEATWAVE IN THE ANTHROPOCENE
There is no sudden storm, no breaking.
What happens:
the sun shines, and shines, and no more green-springing grows the grass
(though: fuck grass. Let me baby my tomatoes instead, baby,
watch me water-bearing, bare-armed and gallon-gallant, freckling for fruit; for the gift made to the tooth).
The days slide yellow, unfiltered, they play like an action movie, like shot on location
in somewhere with a sky that shimmers. Like INT. - HOUSE, hazy sunset through the window,
the light condensing and refracting, atmosphere keeping time to the fan's endless oscillations
in the moments before dinner, before thunder, before the crash.
What happens:
the scrape, the scrape and fat-muffled thump of pastry, vegetal sawing of a knife through rhubarb,
a bit of juice in the air. The click of my wrists, fingers twisted — these bones are my grandmother’s, a legacy
of swollen stalks, and knuckles like strawberries.  The pie melts before it goes in the oven. I cannot serve it
except to myself, bowl of overrun over-red steaming. (I picked the fruit, sliced it into bruised hearts. I want it
sweet and visceral, devouring without violence.)  It leaves its scent with me for days.
Once, I shot out questions over the trellised afternoons: Why do you kneel instead of bending? Why do you peel peas from their shells in your chair?
Now, I pry them out. Sat at the table, one bowl of cherries, one of stones.
What happens:
two girls lie on the floor and watch the ceiling fan. They touch,  or don’t. Talk, or don’t. A hand trails its memory through the carpet,
connects to forearm, to hipbone, to hand.  Are you cold? It’s so hot out.
The day hums like cicadas, like a television tube,  like ice cream freezing. Like twenty-years-ago hot, thirty.
The leaves turn up silver, cloud-coloured,  and the lake shudders.
What happens
one year, the summer of you and I at odds, at throats,  summer of we need a fucking air conditioner, summer of
we know it will only get hotter. Summer of tornado warnings  and warnings blown past, and three a.m. streetnoise
drifting in, and drifting out.  Summer of salt and flesh.
We stay up all night and then the next day, and the next,  and forget supper because our mouths are full
(of howling, of magic words,  of each other).
What happens:
the evaporation of everything. In the plague year we lose touch, lose track, lose whole months to fight, or fever, or fatigue.
We lose some stories, find others. Strata form and are uncovered:  fossilization, and the recherche of fossils.
Specimen: hot balcony concrete underfoot, which is also          the granite boulder where the green snake sleeps.
Specimen: shock of a warm wind blowing its menace          through the amusement park, the wedding tent, the picnic, the funeral.
Specimen: an ammonite, endlessly unfurled          into the sharp teeth, the hot breath of time.
Dawn comes early and tramples us. Helios erodes the day into each day, into those days, into the eternal afternoon—
There is a difference between the days in the street and the days in the park;
the days in the suburbs, or on a rocky island; the days of smoke and the days of haze;
and the days spent searching the city for a stranger, screaming; and the nights, and all the ways to gasp for breath.
That which has been unearthed can be remembered;  each epoch, precious, catalogued.
What happens:
eventually, slow rain.

That was probably my favourite new Favourite frank show. Felix Hagan nailed it for support, and Frank solo (Journey of Magi!), joined by Felix for the encore and everyone singing The Ballad Of Me And My Friends when the lights had gone up. Just a great night and exactly what I needed ❤️ #streetnoise (at O2 Ritz Manchester)
