STMicroelectronics transmitter and receiver evaluation boards accelerate Qi wireless charger development

【Lansheng Technology News】On December 6, 2023, STMicroelectronics launched a wireless charging transmitter and receiver evaluation board based on STWLC38 and STWBC86 chips to simplify the development of 15W Qi wireless chargers.

The STEVAL-WLC38RX board is equipped with the STWLC38 5W/15W receiver chip, and the STEVAL-WBC86TX board is equipped with the STWBC86 5W transmitter chip, which helps developers quickly develop and test wireless charger prototypes. Both boards support the STSW-WPSTUDIO graphics software environment to assist in charger development.

STWLC38 receiver chip supports Qi 1.3 Extended Power Profile (EPP) 15W charging protocol and Baseline Power Profile (BPP) 5W charging protocol. Therefore, this receiver chip can also be used as a 5W transmitter in a wireless charger and has a reverse power transmission function to charge the device. This chip integrates a synchronous rectifier and a low dropout (LDO) linear regulator, which can convert the power of the receiving coil into an adjustable DC output voltage of 4V-12V, with a power transmission efficiency of 85%. STMicroelectronics' Adaptive Rectifier Configuration (ARC) mode maximizes the effective charging area, extends the typical detection range of the receiver by 50%, and increases the freedom of device spatial positioning for the most efficient power transfer.

This 5W transmitter chip STWBC86 that complies with the Qi 1.2.4 BPP protocol integrates a high-energy-efficiency, low-impedance full-bridge inverter and driver to ensure that the receiver chip has very low power dissipation and minimizes the bill of materials cost. By adjusting the applied PWM frequency and duty cycle, the chip is able to control the power delivered by the transmitter coil.

Both chips support wide-voltage inputs, simplifying integration with consumer and industrial products. Each chip uses an Arm® Cortex®-M0+ digital core to dynamically manage charging power for optimal energy efficiency. On-chip integrated non-volatile memory (NVM) can host advanced functions and upgrade charging protocols through firmware updates.

Both chips come in tiny chip-scale packages, making them suitable for very compact applications. The STWLC38 wireless charging receiver chip comes in a 2.12mm x 3.32mm WLCSP40 package, while the STWBC86 transmitter comes in a 3.26mm x 3.67mm WLCSP72 package. Both chips have built-in thermal management and electrical protection features.

Both evaluation boards accelerate the development of transmitter and receiver chip-based solutions for a variety of consumer, medical and industrial applications including smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, wearables, personal medical devices, Drug delivery devices, portable ultrasound equipment, toothbrushes, razors, computer peripherals, hearing aids, charging cases, power tools and mobile robots.

I saw them at STSW this year, only got to see a couple songs before I went to go meet up with a friend. My friend Jonah was like "we gotta see them" and I felt terrible for dipping. I checked them out later and started listening to their song "Deaf". Looped that shit. Was listening to it all of April/May 2022.

When this album dropped I was...unwell. My family was going through it because we had some health scares. This became an album to confide in.

If you're just discovering them, I'd recommend sitting down and listening to their discography front to back. All in one go. Particularly on a rainy midwestern day in Cleveland, Ohio. lol. jk you can listen wherever but maybe in a dark room with a candle and when you're feeling melancholy.

Katie Ball, she also just has the loveliest voice. I love her singing in "Early" and "I Am You" in particular.

The Manchineel Tree, An Eldritch Floridian Abomination!

Introduction to my favorite tree

The manchineel tree is a caustic nightmare of deadly poisons and debilitating venom. Touching even the bark will give you a rash! It’s so toxic that people near the trees begin coughing within minutes of standing near it. People put warning signs onto the trees in order to keep people away from them. Here is a picture!

The toxins emitted from the tree

According to Wikipedia, the tree contains the following toxins:

12-deoxy-5-hydroxyphorbol-6-gamma-7-alpha-oxide, an acid I don’t know much about

hippomanins, an antidote for some toxins

mancinellin, supposedly an acid

sapogenin, a steroid

phloracetophenone-2

4-dimethylether, present in the leaves.

These can cause burns, blisters, and rashes when applied together on the skin. The chemicals are so common in the tree that you can’t take shelter under it when it rains, because the water takes the chemicals with it (because they appear as powder on the leaves, and act as such), and they can still burn you because water is caustic by itself, and it accentuates the horrifying acidic burns you get. The burn marks I found googling this were posted here once by @mrmolite​, I’m sorry for using the photo without permission, I hope you’ll forgive me.

The person who owns these hands was on a hike when they ended up picking up or brushing against some manchineel leaves. They ended up with these blisters that lasted a few weeks. Burning the tree boils the sap, which is also caustic, causing inflamation of the lungs and trouble breathing, not to mention conjunctivitis, rashes, and of course, the titular blisters. These symptoms were reported a long, long time ago, way back when people were taking over america. According to wikipedia, William Ellis, a ship’s surgeon for James Cook, wrote about the experience.

"On the fourth, a party of men were sent to cut wood, as the island apparently afforded plenty of that article; amongst other trees they unluckily cut down several of the manchineel, the juice of which getting into their eyes, rendered them blind for several days.“

The fruit!!

The fruit of the tree is also laden with toxins. It is said to taste blissfully sweet, and then after a while turn into a tearing, burning sensation in the throat. The throat and tounge also swell up after a bit, causing an impairment of the respiratory process, also known, scientifically, as “OH GOD I CAN’T BREATHE!!!” Usually, the person is taken to the hospital before this stage occurs, however, if people do not know that the idiot they’re travelling with picked up a random fruit off the ground, they could fall victim to it as well. Take for example the sad case of Dr. Nicola H. Strickland, whose story pops up as the first result on many of my searches. Strickland states the following in the second paragraph of her post, speaking from her and her friend’s experience with the manchineel fruit.

“I rashly took a bite from this fruit and found it pleasantly sweet. My friend also partook (at my suggestion). Moments later we noticed a strange peppery feeling in our mouths, which gradually progressed to a burning, tearing sensation and tightness of the throat. The symptoms worsened over a couple of hours until we could barely swallow solid food because of the excruciating pain and the feeling of a huge obstructing pharyngeal lump. Sadly, the pain was exacerbated by most alcoholic beverages, although mildly appeased by pina coladas, but more so by milk alone.“

The fruit is shaped slightly like a very small, underdeveloped pumpkin, but is light yellow or green. 

Conclusion

Please, if you’re going to florida or south america, avoid this tree at all costs. It’s not worth the sweet taste of the fruit to end up hospitalized for internal chemical burns, and personally, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Some random headcanons for the Shaun the Sheep/sheep the musical au but with W&G canon because who says we can’t make an insane multiverse?

@is-it-mungojerry-or-rumpelteazer I know you were interested in this so I’m tagging you. I’m not going to tag sheep the musical because I feel like this isn’t that relevant to the general sheep au. All of the stuff in italics are films from the Wallace & Gromit franchise, just saying this now in case anyone gets confused.

-I think Shirley from Shaun the Sheep could be a mix of Bustopher Jones and Jellylorum. She’s very fond of food and stout like Bustopher, but she has a motherly side like Jelly. So I think she can be a combo character.

-The twins from Shaun the Sheep (the generic twins, I don’t think they had names?) could be Jerrie and Teazer. 

-I thoroughly believe that Macafloofy studied the dark arts by infiltrating Reverend Clement Hedges’s (the vicar/priest guy’s) sanctuary in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and read his books on ancient curses.

-Also the vicarage that Reverend Clement resides in, in this universe at least, is the place where Old Deut hangs out when he’s not with the flock. (I have no idea how far away the vicarage is from the barnyard, but maybe Old Deut uses magic to get there lol). 

-Macafloofy is also definitely in cahoots with Feathers McGraw from The Wrong Trousers, he broke him out of the zoo prison and now they’re teaming up to commit crimes and take down the sheep Jellicles.

-I LOVE the idea that Gromit is this universe’s Rumpus Cat (well, Rumpus dog lol). Gromit was basically the sheep’s hero (aside from Shaun) in A Close Shave, so this makes perfect sense to me.

-I also love the idea that Preston the cyborg dog was involved in this universe’s Battle of the Pekes and Pollicles. Actually, the fight that goes down between him and Gromit in A Close Shave could be the battle now that I think about it. 

I’m officially dubbing this the STSW&G multiverse, which I’ll start thinking of as separate from the general sheep the musical au because it’s pretty disconnected at this point. I know this whole mess will probably only make sense to me because I have this weirdly extensive knowledge of the W&G franchise, but that’s okay lol.
