an undescribed Calomyxa sp. - the only representative member of this genus with a stalk. The name Calomyxa means ‘beautiful slime’ as this species dries and becomes beautifully iridescent with intricate patterns of folds and wrinkles.

“Stemonitopsis typhina and a different type of ‘myxo’. The orange specks on the wood below the slime mold are Stigmatella aurantiaca, a myxobacteria. Myxobacteria have a similar life cycle to myxomycetes (slime molds), despite being only distantly related. They can look similar, but they make even tiny slime molds look large. Each orange fruit body is only about two tenths of a millimeter tall.” — by Stu Pickell

“An interesting plasmodium found under a log a few days ago. Slime molds can only be identified from mature fruit bodies, not indistinct plasmodium like this, but i didn’t get a chance to see what this became.”
