Do you know of any resources/groups for queer students at BYUI? I've seen information relating to Provo, but is there anything available in Rexburg? I'd love to join or participate in them.
BYUI students definitely have far fewer resources available to them compared to their peers in Utah.
I'm not sure is USGA Rexburg is active anymore. I haven't seen a post to their Facebook page in 2 or 3 years. However, they do have an email, you can try contacting them and see if you get a response: [email protected]
Flourish Point is in Rexburg. They offer counseling, they have a food pantry, they have a library of queer books & movies/tv shows.
Rexburg Pride is held in the summer.
An Encircle House is being built at 113 South Center Street. I'm not sure when it will open, but I think the plan was for sometime this year.
The Queerstake Discord has a byu-idaho ward, you can check in there for anyone who knows of more resources in the area.
Hopefully there's others on Tumblr who are in Rexburg and can chime in with additional resources they may know of

Provisional Irish Republican Army (Provos, EON)
Confederate Southern Army: In the prequels, the Confederate Southern Army, was portrayed as Nixon; Finis Valorum.  It's the new trend in art, portraying California Republicans with a ZODIAC naval or airline draft unit, as racist white southerners supporting Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The MI-6 Poverty Draft: In the Nolan trilogy, the villains were portrayed as MI-6 from poverty, the CIA's operand; America now has access to calculus banking derivatives, a catalyst reaction removing from simple interest debt of the Mob (a foreign espionage estate owned, outside of the fire marshal, the Swastika).  Instead of using MI-6 solely as playwrights, Scientology (Hitler Youth) has been replaced with American spies.
The Foreign Aid Investment: Star Trek, has featured Karl Urban, "Bones", being the last survivor of a medical bay blowout; however his character, is oil economics, shutting down Cape Wind and making it popular for American university students to take energy classes, for power grids and disimproved power rates of appliances; the sales of poverty surplus, to the African community, outside of the Mossad's claim to be NSA; NSA, a MUD system, taught on the internet, and prior, in teacher's union games, DARPA.
Black Lives Matter: A new movement, out of the "Caucasian" pizza, the African distaste of tomato and deadly nightshade, behind the combined and private drug market rates, drug dealers paid as if upon wage, with an extended salary out of purchase of marijuana, signaled through sales of marijuana on the cleared market; the black market removed, as racketeering, through Synagogues; Nietzsche's work, refuted, and German opium sales by CVS, made illegal.
American Women's Union: The VOICE Australian union, forming through protection of women threatened with incarceration by British Diet forces in Japan, the Yakuza; the shutdown of pimping services of France and Germany, South Park Studios, and the removal of contract laws on those visiting dominatrixes, a return to the concept of prostitution as fetish.  Common economics laws, introduced to housing of employee in the blue collar industries, and the worker's rally removed, in favor of the women's rally; the armed female, with a handgun or rifle, not the gay man, the school shooter.  The forbidden term of homosexual, as Muslim, returned to the markets, and the common expulsion of the homosexual and their female friends, lesbians, from society and into poverty.
TV Tropes: The shutdown of the Iranian-Tehran Jewish claim of intellectual property for oil rights, and the removal of the retarded, those Germans rigging and claiming lottery bets, to obselescence, under Hungarian and Polish masters, to protect America's drilling rights.  The repetitive use of grocery store logic, on the internet, any using, attracted to claim of royalty contract under Stan Lee's internal housing logic; however rendered flabbergasted, at own claim of production as owned by self, instead of owned by commodity introduced with currency attached; labor of good, the payment and paid source of economy, for farm numbers; not seizure of digits of bank, the housing market in narcotics, for falsely produced work, the minor act on stage of theater.
Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer: The children's hero, as impossible to approach, and not based on any work of fit or form to recognize genome, type, or law, the common pederasty as accused of otherwise if placing a human being in a children's game or film, and the nullification of ramified suits of claim, to reveal the individual applying law as a homosexual; a queen, the poorest type of man or woman available, the incompetently tutored by parent, in suits of law of plaintiff having produced success in court.  The removal of Dr. Joshua Golden's office, by the shifted engram of selection of character, each character either picking Sullivan, in "The Departed", or forced into Costello, the spy for the British John Hancock firm, the Tong; the exploitation of American, Chinese, and African labor, for a division of community in white views of foreign culture; held around the dinner table, of racist households, the French and English.  A dominance of Irish power.

Why Student Housing is Beneficial for Students Today than Conventional Rentals
Due to the introduction of upscale off-campus student housing, the phrase "student housing" is no longer primarily linked with dormitories and other on-campus lodging. Even though these independent apartments close to campus aren't often controlled or run by the university with which they are affiliated, they are generally situated as nearby to the university as feasible and cater mainly to renting to students. Due to these five advantages, off-campus housing of this type provides some of the greatest living conditions for students.
Acceptance is Simpler
Student flats urge college students to rent from them, with exception of other off-campus accommodation alternatives. Due to their requirement for short-term leases and frequent life adjustments, college students tend to attract the attention of both small and major property administration organizations as potential tenants. Some estate agents would like a lengthier engagement regardless of whether a student renter stays in the same apartment for the entire four to six years they pursue a degree. Even if you don't have a job and want to settle for your rent with loans or parent assistance because off-campus student housing understands the patterns and routines of the college student, businesses are far more likely to consider your request.
Customized Amenities
Off-campus housing is very popular because of the independence it provides. There are numerous restrictions in dorms, including caps on visitors and entry/exit hours. But by choosing off-campus lodging, you can obtain far more than simply a curfew-free flat. Off-campus housing is designed with students in mind, but it also leans more luxurious. On-campus housing is very different from living in a fancy building, which typically offers amenities like an attached bathroom, rooftop pools, and guarded parking.
Nearby Access to the University
The majority of well-known institutions of higher education take on considerably more students than they can accommodate in on-campus accommodation. Private off-campus rentals could cover this void, however, they are sometimes rather far from the college and consequently not very convenient for the tenants. Living in a dorm makes it easier to walk to the classroom instead of driving, which is much more challenging if you live far from school. Nearest to the university is generally always where you'll find student-only off-campus accommodation. Despite its appellation, several buildings are situated on or near the campus for convenience.
Reasonable Prices
Luxurious living and inexpensive costs aren't often linked, but off-campus student accommodation is one situation where they are.
These apartments in Provo, UT typically have cheaper regular rents than those offered by the college itself because they are largely in competition with dormitories and on-campus housing for a similar marketplace. The reductions are more than they might seem on paper since you also get more flexibility and facilities for that rent payment. In many locations, student accommodation also frequently has a lower cost spectrum than the broader private rented sector.
Conclusion:
You can even make plans from term to term in some student accommodations for the most freedom. You gain if you opt to leave school early or go from an academic setting to the working world. Only active students are eligible for on-campus housing. In speaking, you won't have much time to find new housing if you take breaks or stop attending school. Contrarily, private student accommodation is permitted to impose restrictions on non-student occupants. This implies that you'll have lots of time to determine what to do next because most locations are pleased to let you complete your lease even if you stop showing up for lessons.

1985.
Mormon bishops in Provo, Utah canceled the cable package in a student housing complex after hearing rumors that MTV promoted “sex, drugs, witchcraft and the bizarre.”
Bishop Leo Weidner, the landlord, confessed to never having seen MTV, but insisted, “There’s oral sex, there are lesbians making love, there is witch-craft, there is sado-masochism.”
In protest, Mormon students draped a large banner over their balcony which read: “Give Me MTV or Give Me Death!”

Travis & Linda ~~~~~~ She found it awkward …
Tumblr media
In Travis’ texts, he’s quite critical of others, even though he had no ability to censor his own life. When his ex-girlfriend Linda Ballard dumped him in 2001 because she hated PPL and wanted no part of it, his response was:
“she valued traditional education and predictability of a job over the greater earnings potential of a entrepreneur.”
In other words, I’m superior – I’ll get rich off of PPL – and you’ll be a sucker working 9-5pm earning a meagre pay check. Where was all of this bravado in Travis coming from?
When Lisa lost her job during the course of their dating, what did Travis do? He talked to her about the possibility of PPL. He talked to all of his girls about the business. If it wasn’t bad enough he was recruiting them for blow jobs, he was wheeling and dealing them with business propositions as well.
(VANITY: Jodi Arias by Lisa Wilson & Nick van der Leek)
Tumblr media
In June 2001, Travis had fallen in love with a young woman he had met at the Young Singles Ward in Riverside. Linda Ballard was nineteen and a student at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Travis and Linda had met once before while Linda was still in high school. He had even flirted with her, but her sister scolded him that she was still in high school and too young for him. When Linda came home for the summer after her freshman year, Travis reconnected with her, and the pair quickly became a couple. Their first date and first kiss were on June 4, 2001, exactly seven years to the day before he was murdered. Travis picked her up at her sister’s house, where she was staying. On his car’s dashboard was a picture of a young woman. “Who’s that?” Linda asked.
“Oh, that’s Deanna,” Travis replied. “She’s my missionary. She’s in Costa Rica on her mission.” Later, Linda learned that Travis had broken up with Deanna while she was in Costa Rica around the time they had begun dating.

From the start, Travis adored Linda. She was pretty, smart, and there was definitely an intense spark. She was quite beautiful, with full lips, and a radiant toothy smile. He was particularly attracted to her slender, petite frame. Linda, in turn, was taken in by Travis’s charisma and his easy way with people. Travis was just a few years older than she. At that point, he was selling day planners at Franklin Covey, a retail store in Riverside that sells organizers and offers time management training for companies and individuals. According to Linda, he was very into organization. He didn’t want to stay there long, as he had bigger plans for himself. Linda learned that he had been raised in poverty and she admired his determination to make something of himself. However, she was against his decision to forgo college in favor of finding a quick way to earn big money.
(Exposed: The Secret Life of Jodi Arias by Jane Velez-Mitchell)
Before long, the relationship between Travis and Linda became serious. They started talking about marriage almost immediately. In August, Linda had to move back to Provo for her second year at Brigham Young. Travis wanted to go to Provo, too, saying he would find an apartment, so the two could continue dating. But Linda told him not to come yet, preferring to wait a semester before Travis made such a leap. She didn’t want the pressure of having someone moving his whole life to another state for her. She wanted to date long-distance and visit each other as often as they could.
That fall, Travis was struggling financially. He wasn’t making much at Franklin Covey, and his financial picture was growing increasingly bleak. He shared a house with several other young men, but he still had rent and bills to pay. He confided to friends that he was down on his luck. Though he had saved three thousand dollars to put away for a rainy day, he had spent most of it, and there appeared to be many rainy days still ahead. From his futon, he prayed to God for an answer to his troubles. He had dreams of financial independence, world travel, and even a career in politics at some point in the future.
One morning, Travis awoke with a strong urge to connect with a fellow church member named Chris Hughes, a tall, strapping man with a cheerful yet commanding presence. Travis had heard of Chris, but the two had never really spoken. That Saturday, Travis followed his premonition and sought Chris out. He learned that Chris was a salesman for a firm called Pre-Paid Legal, and as luck would have it, Chris was searching for someone as well. Chris was looking for a key person to help him build his business in Southern California. Although PPL was a great opportunity, Chris was new to town and needed to make connections. It was a perfect fit. Except for his mission, Travis had lived in Riverside his whole life and knew tons of people. Chris had an established team and a secure career. Both men liked to describe their initial meeting as “providence,” with each searching for what the other had to offer. In the days that followed, Chris hired Travis onto his sales team at PPL.
As a sales associate, Travis had a gift for closing the deal. He used the story of his own childhood struggles to motivate potential clients. The strategy quickly won him financial rewards, and he was convinced he had found his ticket to success. But his success at PPL came with a price all its own: Linda wasn’t comfortable with PPL’s multilevel marketing approach, where every sales associate recruited people under him, and each of those people was expected to recruit more people, who would be under that person. The concept did not sit well with her. She found it awkward when Travis tried to sell the company’s services to her friends. They’d be on a double date when Travis would turn the conversation to PPL and encourage the other couple to join. Linda began to feel uneasy when they were socializing with friends, but it wasn’t enough to end the relationship.
Travis and Linda spent that Christmas with both of their families; first in Las Vegas with Linda’s father and the rest of her family, then in Riverside for Christmas dinner with Travis’s grandparents, Mum Mum and Grandpa Jim. Grandma Norma was sweet, laid-back, and easy to talk to. Everyone involved had a great time, chatting, joking, and enjoying each other’s company.
Travis was enamored with Linda and enjoyed showing her off to all his friends—even introducing her to his barber. He also wanted her to meet his mother, Pamela. She was not in good health, and he was not sure how much longer she would be around. Linda knew about Travis’s horrible childhood. He had told her about his mother’s abuse and the powerful drug addiction she had ultimately conquered, explaining how he no longer harbored animosity or resentment toward his mother and earning Linda’s admiration in the process. Still, Linda didn’t know what to expect.
During the visit, Travis and his mother were polite and cordial to each other, although they were clearly not close. While she had kicked drugs, her small home was still quite messy. She seemed to be the polar opposite of her fastidious and motivated son. Linda and Travis didn’t stay long, just long enough for Linda to smile, shake Pam’s hand, and talk for a bit.
After Christmas break, the plan was for Travis to move to Provo. That January 2002, the two caravanned to Utah, using walkie-talkies to stay in touch for the long drive. Linda had found Travis a house to share with other single Mormon men and helped him move in. His place was not far from the house she shared with several other young Mormon women.
The momentum of their relationship was powerful. The two would kiss and cuddle together, but they never went further. Both were intent on adhering to the tenets of their shared religion, but it was hard for them to control their desires. Travis was anxious to enjoy a sexual relationship, but because sex out of wedlock was considered a sin by the Mormon church, Travis wanted to wait to have marital intimacy. Still, he was sure he had found his soul mate. Months earlier he had even gone out and bought her an engagement ring, and had gone so far as to ask Linda’s dad for his daughter’s hand in marriage.
Although Linda knew that Travis wanted to get married, she was having doubts about making him her life partner. She was very young and not sure that she was ready to make the ultimate commitment. She loved him, but she just wasn’t sure he was the one. She began praying over whether or not she should marry him, and the answer she got back was “no.” On February 5, she went to Travis’s apartment to end things. She told him she didn’t feel right about getting married. She wasn’t sure if it was because he wasn’t the right one, or it was simply bad timing. She said she was still very young, and marriage was a big step. When she said they needed to break up and move on with their lives, Travis was devastated. He began crying uncontrollably. “I just can’t picture my life without you,” he said, tears running down his cheeks. She had never seen him cry so intensely, and it broke her heart.
Travis sent Linda an email later that night, telling her he didn’t know if he would ever find anyone else like her and apologizing for not being worthy. “I wish that I could show my best self. I feel like I have so much to offer, and I feel like you haven’t seen the best Travis that there is. I want to be better, and I want you to see my best self.”
Linda felt terrible for him. For some reason, she was no longer sure how she felt about seeing him. “It’s a timing thing,” she told him in a reply email. “We’ll keep dating.” The two got back together within the hour.
youtube
“I want to marry you, and I will wait for you to make up your mind,” Travis told her.
On February 10, Travis’s grandfather had a heart attack, and Travis immediately flew back to California to be with him and Mum Mum. He even moved in with Chris Hughes temporarily to be near his grandmother in case she needed him. Later that month, Linda traveled to Riverside to visit. While there, Travis brought her to a PPL meeting. He was enthusiastic for her to find out more about it, hoping it would turn her less negative. It was there that she saw Deanna Reid, the girl in the photo on Travis’s dashboard. Deanna had returned from Costa Rica, and apparently had been recruited into PPL as well. By now Linda knew about their past relationship, so she was curious about her.
After the meeting, Travis signed Linda up as a new recruit. She was uncomfortable with that, but he told her not to worry, he would do all the work. Although Linda accepted Travis’s choices, she continued to feel that a college degree would serve him better and open more doors in the future. The day after the meeting, Linda came to see Travis at Chris’s house, and the two had a long talk. They considered dating other people, but still while dating each other, too. Travis agreed, hoping that this meant there was still a chance that their relationship would work out.
On March 8, Travis flew back to Utah, and the two continued to date. Linda was still trying to decide how she felt about the relationship. For the next several months, Travis did all sorts of special things to woo her—cooking her dinners, baking her cookies, and taking her out on really nice dates. After all his effort, Linda felt torn. A part of her wanted to marry him, but some other part of her was still questioning a lifetime partnership.
That May, Linda and her friend Krista took a road trip from Provo to Riverside. While in Southern California, they went on a double date in Huntington Beach with Travis and his friend Mark. During the evening, Linda and Travis danced to Chris de Burgh’s “Lady in Red,” the same song the two had danced to on one of their first dates the previous June. Suddenly, as they slow-danced, Linda began to cry. All at once, reality hit her. This would probably be the last time the two would dance together.

Linda had decided to move on. Travis soon packed up his stuff in Provo and moved back to Riverside. After the breakup, Travis wrote Linda a poem, the gist of it being he only wanted the best for her, whether that meant staying with him or going their separate ways. He was heartbroken, but ready to move on with his life. Now Travis Alexander was going to put all of his considerable intelligence and drive into becoming a financial success.

For those who live in the BYU/Provo area, I’m making you aware of this exhibit by Maddison Tenney and hope you’ll go support this artist
—————————
In 2021, Maddison Tenney founded the Raynbow Collective as a way for LGBTQ+ BYU students to feel connected by sharing stories, art, and connecting them to local resources.
You may have heard of BYU deciding at the last minute to pull the pamphlet created by the Raynbow Collective from the gift bags distributed to incoming freshmen. The pamphlet had information about resources for queer students like scholarships, weekly & monthly events, how to find safe housing, therapy. The pamphlet can be accessed online.
Raynbow Collective has also organized virtual art shows which invited students & alumni to submit work that explores the spectrum of LGBTQ+ experiences at BYU (I submitted something for the 2021 show)
Raynbow Collective also does the Back To School Pride! event at Kiwanis Park in Provo, UT.
For only 2 years, that’s really impressive!!!

I don’t know if these particular pieces will be included in her solo exhibition, but it will give you an idea of what you may see.

The completely unnecessary news analysis
by Christopher Smart
March 16, 2021
UTAH QUIZ FOR SMARTISH PEOPLE
Ready for some fun? The Salt Lake Tribune recently published a readers quiz called “Think You Know Utah?” asking questions, such as: Why did Mark Hofmann ruin reporter Peggy Stack's first day at The Tribune; and “What does A.G. Sean Reyes do under his desk every morning? Well, it got the staff here at Smart Bomb to thinking, maybe we, too, should have a quiz. We'll call it, “Do You Get Zion?”
1- Where did the Utah Democratic Party get those Klingon Cloaking Devices?
2- Why did Burgess Owens bet his Covid Relief $$ that Nancy Pelosi is a lesbian?
3- Which donut shop in Provo is best to spot two polygamist at the same time?
4- What combinations of drugs does Gov. Spencer Cox take to remain so blissful?
5- Why did Lawmakers' prayers to save The Hill Cummorah Pageant go unanswered?
6- What happens to LGBTQ students at BYU keggers?
7- Who warned LDS Pres. Russel M. Nelson to never say,“Salamander?”
8- Why do some Democrats object to renaming Dixie State as Cotton Pickers U?
The answers will be posted on the door of the Utah Democratic Party if we ever find the place. Hey Democrats, turn off those damn Klingon Cloaking Devices.
WRITTEN IN HELL BY THE DEVIL HIMSELF
Show us a good loser and we'll show you a loser. Damn straight and Republicans know what they have to do since losing the White House and the Senate — make voting more difficult, er uh, that is, “restore public confidence in our elections.” In recent weeks, Red State legislatures have put forth over 200 bills to restore confidence for Trumpish voters, including Arizona, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. Of course, Georgia led the way by making it illegal for black people to vote. “We'll cut Stacey Abrams off at the knees,” said GOP operative, Lauren Witzke. So what do those damn FDR Democrats do in response — they invent HR1 and have the audacity to call it the “For The People Act of 2021,” because it would expand voter registration, implement fair redistricting and restore The Voting Rights Act. Well, Utah's designated spokesman for righteous indignation, Mike Lee, wasn't having any of it. “This is a bill as if written in hell by the devil himself.” You tell 'em Mike. “It's an effort to ensure an institutional, revolutionary Democratic Party of sorts,” he whined, “one that can remain in power for many decades to come." Those bastards. Let's all meet in D.C., attack the Capitol and take our country back from black people.
THE RUSH TO REPLACE RUSH
As Republicans begin fund-raising for a Rush Limbaugh Memorial in Washington, D.C., no one has yet to embrace the Elephant in the room: Who will replace the greatest human being to ever prevaricate into a microphone? Like him or hate him, Rush was a giant who defined Republican core values for decades. In fact, some ultra-conservatives are thinking about something like Mount Rushmore with Rush and Newt Gingrich carved on a big rock cliff so that no one can ever forget how much red-blooded American white grievance they brought us. As Rush once said: “The NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons.” And this: "Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women access to the mainstream of society." And this: "When a gay person turns his back on you, it is anything but an insult; it's an invitation." Yes, it will be a challenge to replace him — false prophets don't come along every day. But hopefully a new grand wizard will soon appear because there is little time to waste as hate-radio audiences are aging quickly — averaging over 65. Young, white people just aren't into hate as much as their parents and grandparents. What is this country coming to?
Post script — OK sports fans, that about does it for another week here at Smart Bomb, where we keep track of the GOP-QAnon merger, so you don't have to. Those convulsions you see are really that of a political party stretching in ghastly ways like a dividing amoeba pulling apart — or perhaps it's more akin to the female robot, Ava, in Ex-Machina, who eliminates her creator because, like Marjorie Taylor Greene, she wants to kill something. If you like melodrama with psychic violence, tune in as the Party of Trump slowly melts like the Wicked Witch of West after injecting disinfectant to kill Coronavirus. Say goodbye to the Grand Old Party's chorus of small government and balanced budgets. The Trump base of white grievance isn't going anywhere soon but might become disquieted when Uncle Joe's Covid Relief package gets the economy humming like Mitch McConnell's Mercedes — or if they ever realize  that cash donations to donaldjturmp.com are going to the Trump Organization's debt service and to keep the lights on at Mar-A-Lago. Of course, this news may come slowly to Utah and Red States dominated by strange weather patterns and websites that create twisters and rabbit holes. But remember, Rome didn't burn in a day.
Well shucks, Wilson, you and guys in the band have been awfully quiet. You're not all hungover by any chance. Of course not. Alright, but do you think you can pull it together and take us out with a little something for Mike Lee and his friend:
I lit out from Reno, I was trailed by twenty hounds Didn't get to sleep last night 'till the morning came around. Set out runnin' but I take my time A friend of the devil is a friend of mine If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me twenty bills I spent the night in Utah in a cave up in the hills. Set out runnin' but I take my time, a friend of the devil is a friend of mine, If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. Got two reasons why I cry away each lonely night, The first one's named Sweet Anne Marie, and she's my hearts delight. The second one is prison, babe, the sheriff's on my trail, And if he catches up with me, I'll spend my life in jail...

C.O.N.S.U.M.E.D
What happens when we consume more than we need? What happens when our choices are influenced by societal pressures of how things should be? Part 1 of my reflective journal will aim to provide a glimpse at two weeks of a working mom, head of a house of five, who also coincidentally adds event planner often to her job tasks.
Day 1: I specifically started my consumption journal on Friday, October 25. The day before a large case competition I was hosting on campus. Day 1 starts like most every other day of my life. The 20 minute drive to daycare, followed by the usual ice cap pit stop at Tim Horton’s. This day is special though, with the pressures of ensuring everything was just right for our judges and sponsors. I stroll off to Ferme Beaulieu to spend $328 on gifts. I am thinking that at least I am buying local products (honey, herbs, ketchup aux fruits) and feel pretty great about that. But why do I feel obliged to buy gifts at all? Wouldn’t a sincere thank you be enough? I guess according to Jonathan Porritt (2011), I have fallen victim to consumerism at its best. Somehow, I feel OK about it though.
A quick stop at Dollarama for gift bags, disposable coffee cups (cringe!), and plastic plastic trays. Finally, a $148 trip to Provigo for snacks for the case competitors and coaches. Oops, did I mention the trip to the t-shirt printer to pick up the 60 red printed competition momentos. Let’s add the 250+ pages I printed that day! As I sit here and reflect on the necessities (needs) of running a case competition versus expectations (and wants), I come to the realization that most of what I have purchased is simply there to enhance image.
Day 2 (October 26): Tim’s ice cap (check!). 60 Donuts, 60 pre-packed lunches, 24 cans of Perrier, 60 cans of soft drinks, 40 coffees in disposable cups, 100 plastic glasses of wine. Today, I am completely influenced by materialism and keeping the “image”. Let’s keep in mind that I work for a business school and that comes with some rather large assumptions around how things are supposed to look and be. Not to mention, I am hosting five people from the company who is sponsoring the event, so I need to keep them happy and ensure the event lives up to their expectations. I am reminded of Amitai Etzioni, (2012) and his sentiments about “keeping up with the Jones’”. It is true, when one party sets a certain expectation, we all rise to meet, or better, exceed them.
Today; however, my biggest disappointment was food waste. The boxed lunches were good, but about 25% of people didn’t eat all their meal. Almost 100% of the people didn’t eat the dessert included. We don’t have access to compost, so it went to the trash. Above the clear environmental impact of my event, I am reminded of the fact that one fifth of the world’s richest people consume 45% of all the meat and fish (Shah, 2014). Despite the company providing compostable cutlery and cups, I feel guilty that I sent so many things to the landfill today. To top it all off, Sodexo served a less than stellar menu at the Gala dinner (veal sous-vide). I swear I wanted to eat it, but alas, two bites in and I am done. More to the trash. Exhausted and mentally drained, I wonder to myself where the balance between convenience and waste needs to come into play. Why can’t we have compost stations on campus?
Day 3 (October 27): But first, my ice cap! A friend’s child’s birthday party today so I scramble to get things together. I run to Provigo to grab stuff for mini pizzas to share (forgot my grocery bags, so plastic it is). My friend insisted on no gifts at the party, which I wanted to accept, but quite frankly couldn’t. I’m glad I didn’t because apparently no one else respected it either. I think about this social obligation more deeply (Goodwin, Smith, & Spiggle, 1990). I try my best to make a compromise, we opt for a movie day among friends instead of a traditional gift. I am hoping this small intrinsically motivated action may decrease future landfill waste in the future. Nonetheless, we are filled with waxed juice cups and plates. Back to the Provigo to grab something for the family for supper. I grab peppers in a plastic bag, sausages in a styrofoam package, pasta sauce in a glass bottle, cheese in plastic packaging and pasta in a cardboard box. Nothing much to compost or recycle unfortunately.
Day 4 (October 28): Monday and back to work. Ice cap, yup! I am starting to get quite the collection in my office recycling bin. My boss just commented on it. I guess it is a bit of an eye sore..haha!
Tumblr media
Two trips to Provigo today. One at lunch to grab George’s bread, deli ham, Coaticook cheese, carrots and dip. Next stop on the way home from work for supper, chicken, baby potatoes and stuffing.
Day 5 (October 29): If you haven’t guessed by now, ice cap time! Today, my brother (who lives with us) did a fridge clean up. Sigh! I can’t believe how much stuff we threw away. Past date, wilted vegetables, moldy fruits. Why don’t I just throw money directly into the garbage can? Is it normal that the first thing I think about is wasted money? According to a study  by Graham-Rowe, Jessop, and Sparks (2014),  wasting money is indeed a major motivator to minimize food waste. Inspired by this revelation, I am determined to have leftovers for lunch and transform the chicken salad sandwiches tonight for supper. I don’t even have to stop at Provigo today! WOW!
Day 6 (October 30): IC (that’s all I will say). Wednesdays are always tricky because I am running around and teach a class at night. It is one of those days. I grab lunch at Subway (steak sub, chips and a drink) -> garbage.
Tumblr media
Run to Provigo after work and grab steak, carrots, potatoes and gravy from Provigo and throw it in pot to cook. I also realize that I haven’t really bought any candy for Halloween for my students in case class. $65.30 later and we have meat and candies! I’ve also been putting out chocolates outside my office door for students.
Day 7 (October 31): Another ice cap to go please. I don’t even eat lunch today. Now I realize we have no candy for the kids. Drive to Walmart and $68.03, we’ve got goodies. No lunch again, and we go to a friend’s for supper. Off with the 4 year old trick or treating in the rain. She gets a pail of treats, we have 2 boxes of stuff leftover.
Day 8 (November 1): Day of the dead? I think so! Actually order breakfast with my ice cap at Timmy’s this morning. No lunch today. We decide to go shopping after work today as my brother has a 40% discount at L’Equipeur. $218.58 later, my husband enjoys new shoes, jeans, sport jacket, t-shirts, and a pair of sneakers for my mom for Christmas. Oh wait! Marlee needs new winter boots, so $86.22 later, we have new winter boots for her. I also see the cutest dress boots at Marshall’s (fake baby Uggs). I suppose these is what the marketers are hoping for. Top it all off with super for the family at Guido’s. (Wow! I have really been eating like crap!) Day 8 hurt the bank account!  Day 9 (November 2): Maybe I should actually buy some groceries for my empty fridge. I sludge off to Provigo early Saturday morning to spent near $200. At least I have meat, veggies, fruits, and some of the other basics for my family to actually live on. Stop at Tim’s on the way home for the usual.
Tumblr media
Day 10 (November 3): Beautiful breakfast with family (and an ice cap). Spent the day making food (soup, roasted chicken, pasta sauce, etc....). Trying to cut down on the restaurant stops this week. End up at the library with some dear colleagues from GSE503, so I think another ice cap is in order to stay awake (and leftover Halloween Candy).
Day 11 (November 4): Check that thought. Day went to hell, running late, dead tired, no breakfast, grabbed Rima for supper. Fridge full, but I don’t even care at this point.
Day 12 (November 5): Today is a new day! I started making iced coffee at home! No Tim’s! I actually did not spend $1 today! Why do I feel so great? Apparently it is something referred to as perceived consumer effectiveness (PCE). When is comes to sustainable buying practices, this PCE is influenced directly by guilt and pride. This becomes important because it means that as a consumer,  my behaviours could be modified by using emotions (Antonetti, & Maklan, 2014).
Day 13 (November 6): Another no spending kind of day! Feeling all pride and no guilt! Maybe Atonetti and Maklan are on to something!
Tumblr media
Day 14 (November 7): Last day of recording! No ice caps and going strong.  My husband and I are feeling like we need a little extra family time, so we go out for supper at Mike’s with Marlee. We follow it up by a little Chocolat Favoris. I asked myself why we went to Mike’s again? What a waste!   A quick stop by Provigo to grab snacks for my basketball girls. I make an orzo salad plus pull together fruits, yogurt, cheese and granola bars.
Stay tuned for Part 2 to see if I actually made some changes and what this whole process has meant for me. Until then, I leave you on this note: Waiting on the World to Change

Why I love Utah
Tumblr media
Laying in bed at the Wedge campsite number 4, my thoughts were turned to why I love camping and how I have come to love Utah.  I'm thinking of all the great outdoors places, but also all the great food and entertainment I've enjoyed here.   A co-worker who moved here from Atlanta was going to visit the Great Salt Lake.   I was able to share with him the nearest place to do that and I realized that I've learned a thing or two about enjoying this great state and that perhaps it would be worthwhile to share.
Your experience will be different and you should do additional research and consider your own circumstances, particularly when it comes to outdoor activities, but I hope others find this interesting and helpful.
52 things to love about Utah The idea here is to list out something that could be done every week of the year, even though for me it's been spread out over 17 years (now 19, wait 22).  This list is of things I've done that readily come to mind without much effort and in no particular order.   My descriptions will not be exhaustive.  You will want to do additional research and find your own trails or activities and experiences.  But this should give you an idea.  Many of these are activities were with my family, work associates, friends, Boy Scouts or the now defunct Bingham High School Wilderness Club.

comic diaries highlights: 2014
Here are some memorable comics from 2014 as I continue to celebrate the last 10 years of daily comics!
Tumblr media
If I were to make just one comic about life at home with my family, it would be this one: bugging my younger siblings with puns. After so many years spent trying to boss them around and be the most mature one in the house, I guess I gave up and just wanted to play all the time.
Tumblr media
In May, I surprised everyone (including myself) by moving to Provo. The plan was to stay with an old mission companion for the summer while I finished working on my graphic novel and then I would start a publishing master’s program in the fall. I got sidetracked when I started dating my (spoiler) future husband. For our first date, I planned a Pinterest craft making art by melting crayons with a hair dryer. We also went to an art museum where he told me, “Can you drop me off at home by 7? I have another date after this.” Inside I was screaming, but I played it off super cool. Turns out he was messing with me---his other date was with his brother-in-law to go see a movie. That pretty much set the tone of our relationship to be one of dumb pranks.
Tumblr media
I have a lot of fond memories of the summer we spent dating. We planned a lot of creative things to do, we were counselors for a Japanese exchange student camp, we went to our first comic con together, and we drank SO MANY milkshakes in the name of science. And we binge-watched a LOT of TV.
Tumblr media
When I started my master’s program in the fall and he was in school full-time, I got pretty lonely at home, so I bought a parakeet! She was very cute and made charming noises, but I found out that even though I like birds, I’m not patient enough to be a bird owner. I was never able to tame her enough to actually like me, which was disappointing. That Christmas, I brought her home to my mum, who’s always loved raising birds.
Tumblr media
It took some convincing, but he agreed to marry me and we ended the year with our engagement and a trip to meet his parents. (Ask us about his proposal story---it was nuts.) What a year! I decided to call it quits on my master’s program (to save money for the wedding and because the program was cool but it was designed to prepare me to start my own publishing company, which I didn’t really want to do).
Tune in tomorrow for highlights from 2015!
