My zero waste experience.
My process/experience of reducing my waste in the past 12 weeks hasbeen challenging and simple, expensive and inexpensive, frustratingand also incredibly rewarding. What has been most rewarding, is thechange I’ve seen in other people and the conversations that have sparked because of my journey. The awkward conversations when someone buys you a coffee out of kindness and you have to politely take it but also say that you’re anti-plastic and would prefer that they wouldn’t do that but also appreciate the gesture. Or considering everything you buy and do and whether that will impact your zero waste journey. The countless times you forget to say no straw at a restaurant and then you get a plastic straw and then get annoyed that they still have plastic straws and not paper ones or bamboo but also feel annoyed at yourself for not saying anything. There seemed to be a fair bit of frustrating moments and almost overwhelming moments as I felt no one else understood, that all these people I see in the street everyday just don’t care. Buying a really expensive soap shaker for your dish soap and then having arguments with your partner as they think it’s stupid and they can’t see the point in it or being blamed for them being hungry because they can’t eat anything out of plastic. It’s been a real challenge to be honest, but it’s also been really insightful on what the main challenges are. I think we can ignore my partner as he’s extremely stubborn but I know that within my family and friends, I’ve sparked so many conversations and they’ve made some really great changes to their lives. My parents bought a compost bin after a week of me collecting all our food scraps, they saw how much there actually was and how this didn’tneed to go into land ll. My aunt now tells me how much packaging comes with children’s toys and how I’d hate it. When someone hastaken on board something I’ve said, they want to tell me and that makes it all worth it. Again, a conversation has started. Becoming zero waste, you have to be resourceful and creative, cheating doesn’t exist as it’s all considered part of the process.

Welcome to my next gallery! Susan @blueinthemoonlight is back with some beautful new original jewelry pieces. . Cases from left: necklaces and pendants, rings, and earrings. The tiny case on top is a pair of stud earrings. . Drop in while they're here and while they last (a ring sold before the cases were even hung! 🤯). Studio VI - Rock II
The final step of creating the stone is to cover it in cement. I went to he local Bunnings to gather materials according the the youtube video that I lonked in the previous post. The video suggests using a sand and cement mix to create mortar and then mixing with a black dye to create a darker colour instead of the normal cement grey shade. When I got there the worlers at Bunnings suggested that i used some sort of primer for the cement to ensure that the cement sticks onto the polystyrene.
I had to mix the mix and the black dye together with water to create the mortar.

I had to prepare the polystyrene by painting the primer onto it, this whole process of plastering the grout on had to be quick as the primer took 20 minutes to dry and if it did dry th whole process might take a lot longer to do.

The grout was then applied in chunks and spread to cover all of the polystyrene, initailly the colour iof the black dye was darker than expectied but as it dries it will get slightly lighter and I think it will look pretty good. To texture the stone i first used a hard bristle brush to cerate texture in the grout and then after i went over and patted the whole thing down with a scrunched up plastic bag to create a textured smoothing effect which was effective as it amde it look more natural.

This whole proccess took around 4 hours of priming the polystyrene and covering the stone in the grout mix. The back of the stone was another hurdle to jump over as it had to have a door to get into the batteries and circuit. i covered the door in smaller bits of polystyrene and then literally threw the grout mix onto it. The mix used for the door was more watered down so it stuck more effectivley.

[insert more photos here]
I think one thing I would have changed was to make the stone less boxy with the polystyrene, but I also didnt want it to be too large otherwise it might not fit into studio as it barley will fit through the door anyway.
Here is the top of the stone with the sword in it. I love it i think its super effective and it looks like a real stone.

How great is biodegradable packaging?
Biodegradable/compostable packaging seems to be the latest greatest thing. I haven’t seen a plastic coffee cup in quite a while, many coffee places have changed their ways. It’s more an more common which is great right? There are a few companies in NZ that supply these options, such as Innocent Packaging and Friendlypak.
Is it just a hoax? Great in theory, consumers feel like they’re making a difference yet are they disposing of the product correctly? This doesn’t just include these corn starch plates, lids, cutlery and cups it includes paper also. If they are just being placed into landfill, there’s no consumer habit change. They are still single use.
Also, we assume by placing these biodegradable items into landfill that they’ll eventually break down right? Unfortunately not... “Although much of this waste is biodegradable, the anaerobic burial conditions in many landfills can prevent decomposition” ("Waste generation and disposal in New Zealand | Ministry for the Environment", n.d.)
Why is Innocent Packaging is amazing? They are setting up ‘compost’ bins all around Auckland cafes so that they know that their products are ending in the right place to degrade properly. To sum it up, they’ve taken accountability for their actions and are doing something about it. These bins are in 50 cafe locations around Auckland CBD as they start this initiative.

Visual signs.
I had a talk with Clinton during the last class and showed him the progression of my project and how to play the objects. However, I did need to explain how to play them to him and the other people that I have shown these to. This is where I wanted to include some sort of visualization of how to play these works. he showed me some circuit bent instruments that had vinyl decals to instruct users how to operate them. These were interesting and did provide a lot of insight into how these operated to an outsider with no previous context. I decided a good place to start this was to draw up some logos and see what people responded to.

Hand drawn symbols representing the different effects that I have on the objects such as power, sci-fi, demon noises, speed control and body contacts.
I tried to come up with the symbols that I felt most represented and simply described what they needed to. I asked around and unsurprisingly, the more simple ones were the most well responded to. These were the symbols such as POWER, The spaceship, The link with ‘touch us’, speaker, CANCEL and FAST. This was interesting as people tended to read these and understand them more than decipher what they meant.
I put these markings on the baby’s head as this was the most complex out of the toys, what I got out of doing this was a baby that looked like it has served some years.

The completed baby’s head with instructions for use.
I did not want to create vinyl decals as they have the potential to fall off, not stick to silicone or be too small/big. I penciled out the symbols before drawing over them with permanent marker. In addition, the hand-made look adds to the overall aesthetic that I wanted to achieve with this piece.
Although these were the symbols that on average the most people responded to, when they were put onto the object, people did not follow them and were still confused on how to operate the toy and make it work. This was puzzling to me as they were the same, simple directions that people responded to, yet when people picked it up for the first time, they seemed to not notice the arrows and wordings. Instead, people touched all the buttons APART from the massive red one on the top of the head - which people told me was the most obvious place to put the power button. Many people turned the potentiometer on the side or flicked the switch before pressing the button, which I still have no idea why.
Looking over many different circuit bent toys online, I have seen that most of them do not have decals, like the only user is supposed to be the creator. I want people to pick up and interact with the objects to understand the concept behind these works, which seems to be the case when I just leave them out in the open - however they don’t know how to play them. Can this be combatted or overcome?

Examples of circuit bent toys found online without decals
Although the decals were a nice idea and I personally agree that they make the piece more easily understood - this did not seem to be the case even after user testing. I still have to explain how to play this object to people, which means that I will possibly have to do a live performance or demonstration on open studio night.

finish?
What have we could have done more: OR Fix for exhibition
Paint - because we only decided to change the idea (paint it) the night before the submission, the spray painting job was rushed so we didn't have time to polish it.
UV Lighting - I had a suggestion to mount two small spotlight lamps on the side to get more lighting inside, but Krisma didn't agree on it because she didn't want to buy more things and wanted to rely on the UV lighting material that Kim provided. The spotlight that Kim provided, I thought it was too bright, and I thought it just didn't feel right into it. They gave us the spotlight about 2 - or an hour before the deadline, and I was in Kmart ready to buy the small spotlight lamp (I already got one, which I tested mounting it on the sculpture) so I didn't see the full thing in person, and they said it was fine enough, and trusted them for that statement.
We needed to buy two screw-on UV light bulbs (Kim’s one didnt fit in the spotlight) and just one spotlight since I already got one.

Bigger rings - way too late for bookings. if we decided to only have one row, then we could have made bigger rings.
Secure the stand more - more material and not enough time.
Sound - We were planning to put rice inside the stand and connect a contact mic into the stand, so whenever someone interacts with it, it would make swishing sound, creating a more surreal experience.
This is one of the simplest project I worked on, but I think, this is the actual project that needed more time to be more polished, we spent a lot of time developing the concept behind it as well as prototyping rather than the actual finished work.
