I had my suspicious as a kid, but I didn't think the situation was this dire.

Way to Go

I read about this guy who had hiked to the top

of Angel Falls in Yosemite National Park, and

when he got there, he wanted to check out the

water, of course he did, but falls look different

when you see them from the top; it’s just water

moving over an edge into a vanishing skyline,

and he got right up to the water’s edge to take

a picture, of course he did, and stepped into the

water to get a better shot, and the moving water

took him away, of course it did, and though he

was an idiot, I understand how such a place can

be intoxicating, how the very last thing he was

thinking about was his own mortality and there

was no way he could die in such an exquisitely

beautiful place, going over the waterfalls; that

kind of thing only happened in movies, it wasn’t

real, and I wonder if he thought all these things

as he went over the edge into the blue sky abyss

of vanishing weightlessness—of course he did.

One thing that makes me annoyed is the fact that all of theese people who makes "disney stickers for their redbubble shop" or "makes my little pony bracelets to sell in their etcy shop" etc...fails to realise that what they're doing is literally illegal...you can't sell ANYTHING not a drawing, not a sticker, not a bracelet, not a handmade shirt no NOTHING that has SOMEONE ELSES charakters on them. Because that counts as you making profit of their creation.

For my sake I'm glad people are doing it because otherwise it be hard to find cheap merch...but I just want people to be honest and realise that it is illegal...it's like they're completely oblivious "making a towel with a mickey mouse print on is totally fine because I made it myself so I'm allowed to sell it"

Well you weren't allowed to use the mickey mouse logo without literally either mailing or calling the disney company to ask them and they would still want a profit of said towel sales.

"The Housebreaker of Shady Hill" (The Stories of John Cheever)

What the hell, Cheever

In a reverse of the SOP of this blog, I'm going to take a bit from the Wikipedia on the story collection that is named for this story.

"If there is any weakness in these stories, it is Cheever's reliance on sudden, fortuitous escapes from or alleviations of his character's difficulties. The crisis in these people's live are real and painful, but the ends of the crisis come so abruptly, and in some cases, so implausibly, that it may be hard for the reader to feel their seriousness" - Lynne Waldeland

So this one is weird because you think that it's going to be some freaky morality tale about a man who lives in the suburbs and starts stealing from his neighbors in order to keep his business going. He mentions his mother hates his wife. He has a fight with his wife and almost leaves her but she comes back to him. He notes that his father showed up when he was a kid and took him to a burlesque theater. His father was a drunk, so was his father responsible for his strange habit of stealing money at parties and trying to break into houses? Why did his kid give him a ladder?

Unlike the previous story which is a slight story, this one actually ratchets up the tension and then...he gets his job back and he does one final break-in to give one family back their money.

Yeah. So I kind of made a point about the previous story being about the rich being cushioned in their bubbles, but this is about a suburban white guy who gets away with crimes because who would suspect a suburban white guy of stealing from them.

And then he gets the money back to the people he robbed and everything is fine.

I am tempted to think that this story has a major theme about privilege and suburban life and that the ending is really genius. Still it feels like a wet fart of an ending.
