Today's mix:
Global Underground 014: Hong Kong by John Digweed 1999 Progressive House / Progressive Trance
So, I guess I'm just ping-ponging back and forth between Global Underground mixes by Sasha and Global Underground mixes by John Digweed now. Back when these guys teamed up in the past to do things like Northern Exposure, it yielded some absolute magic, but when they're doing their own separate mixes for Global Underground, I haven't found their output nearly as satisfying. Many would disagree with me on this, though 😅.
But this Digweed double-disc is pretty frickin' good, in my estimation. And what's a little surprising about it to me, in particular, is that I actually really like the first disc—the progressive house one—a lot more than the second disc—the progressive trance one. I've definitely spieled about the late 90s era of progressive house before and how I find it to be largely boring, and the past two mixes that I've dug into from both Sasha and Digweed have much acclaimed progressive house discs on them that seem to cement my view even further.
And yet, the progressive house disc from this set really clicked with me. Diggers gets into a ~deep zone~ in the middle that I don't really jibe with, but a lot of the selections that surround that part are nothing short of excellent. The opener is this sleek and classy, talkbox-infused mix of Underworld's "Cups," by Manchester trio Salt City Orchestra, that sounds like it belongs in some kind of nocturnal-set Mercedes-Benz ad; Leiva's "Something for the Soul" has this fantastically hazy and dubby lead synth to it; Luzon brings in some old world flavoring with his sampling of a late 80s tune by Israeli world music-pop star Ofra Haza in "The Baguio Track;" and then the disc closes with a dark, brooding, and ominous monster from London's Medway, with "Flanker," a song whose constant synth chirps have a way of sounding like an approaching swarm of killer hornets who have their stingers at the ready 😧.
A good amount to enjoy in the second disc here too, especially in its latter half. Digweed runs back-to-back with two different mixes by The Netherlands' Lucien Foort, aka Funk Function; first with Science Dept.'s "Persuasion," which has a bit of an aquatic vibe to it, thanks to a catchy lead synth melody that sounds like rapid, whimsical flute stabs; and then with something smooth in Johan's "Crash." And immediately following that pair is a remix of Dutchman Hole in One's "Amrad in the 7th Phase" by the legendary Ferry Corsten, which features a great, sudden infusion of whistling synths 😌.
Still though, I didn't find this second disc to be as entertaining or cohesive or consistent as the first one. And while people rave about both of these CDs and consider the whole package to be one of the greatest commercial DJ mix releases of all time, I definitely disagree. But out of the trio of GU Digweed mixes I've now ventured into, this one might be my favorite, overall, with Sydney second, and Los Angeles definitely a distant third.
Listen to CD1 here. Listen to CD2 here.
Highlights:
CD1:
Underworld - "Cups (Salt City Orchestra Mix)" A.D.N.Y. Presents Leiva - "Something for the Soul" LSG - "Into Deep (Medway Remix)" Luzon - "The Baguio Track" Jean Phillippe Aviance - "Useless" Medway - "Flanker"
CD2:
Breeder - "Sputnik (New York FM Mix)" Science Dept. - "Persuasion (Funk Function Future Mix)" Johan - "Crash (Funk Function Groove Mix)" Hole In One - "Amrad in the 7th Phase (Ferr's Subliminal Recut)" Bedrock - "Heaven Scent (Evolution Unreleased Mix)"

Energy really does matter
Tumblr media
I don't know if I made a post on this before or wrote it and then deleted it but just in case ima make this and add it to my extra list ig
Tumblr media
Whatever energy you put out can effect your environment, the people around you, everything really
True Example
My neighbor is very kind, being a spychic medium (not even that it's needed) you can really feel how positive this man's energy is. He has a genuine vibe. He shows love to all his animals and his overall home and land. He takes care of his plants and even grows some. He is what you would think a kind elder man is. Cracking some jokes from time to time and staying positive/hopeful
My grandmother, on the other hand, is the exact opposite. An alcoholic who has so many negative traits it's incomparable. I could list them off but we would be here for awhile. She has tried to water and take care of her plants as of now and crops in the past (she's a farmer and used to have a farm with crops and animals so she isn't new to anything // just for clarification).
If I could show you a comparison of the energy in both places you would be astounded. Not only is it the energy, but it's also the appearance. My neighbors yard has a very light energy, you can breath and feel free. His grass is dark green, everything including his plants are healthy. He animals, his trees, his home. He lives so close to us yet his home seems to catch a breeze of wind through the trees xD Then you go over to my grandmothers house and her yard is dry, even some once healthy trees before she moved in, have now died. Her plants grow but you can tell they're weak. Energy-wise, the place is like walking through a dense cloud of black smoke. It's heavy. The negative energy surrounding my grandmothers home has caused physical effects. I had skin problems (then I moved away with my mom and brothers//and we're positive, so once I was gone my skin healed up and everything was fine again) then we came back and my skin began breaking out again. That's just a small example amidst other stuff.
Tumblr media
And for those astrology peeps, think of the planets. Their energy affects us, the earth and etc. Everything has energy, and it's basically like ping pong, bouncing off of everything. However energy loves to cling onto things as well. Which is why it takes time to heal or feel whole again if we've been through a tough time. The more negativity an environment has endured, the longer it will take to peel every layer of negativity. Just like you, wherever your sitting right now needs love 🥺💖
Tumblr media
So with that info,
- Take care of your surroundings (even if it's objects and it seems silly)
- Treat others with love and compassion
- Be a good person :)
- Take care of your home for the next people in the future who live there (before I usually move out, I like to sage the area and spray positive spray to help the next people who move in to have a fresh start ☺💖 it's incase any negative energy gets trapped that I didn't feel)
- Grow plants/trees/fruits/veggies with love, sing as you water them, talk positively to them (if you sell them idk it came to me randomly) that's why people say "this was cooked with love" too 😂
- Cleanse your energy often (if you can) 💃
- Take healing baths/do some self care if you have the ability to
- Tip: Positive affirmations, positive subliminals go a long way
- If you're truly having a bad day, don't take it out on others. Tell them you need a minute and go somewhere alone and breath. Think it all out and get back in the groove. Motivate yourself
- If you deal with negative people on a daily, I know what it's like, it's probably impossible to get away from, however laugh it off. Let those negative people act immature if they want. Show them your vibration isn't to be messed with. You're mature. You're strong. They don't deserve your time and energy 😎🤝😊
- Also side note: Show gratitiude in daily life :) Thank your spirit/angel/ancestor guides for any hidden blessings or help that they've bestowed to you. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it didn't happen. And just because you can't feel it doesn't mean it won't happen! Thank your loved ones for supporting you or anyone important in your life! It's a kind way of showing the universe your love. This can't be a one sided relationship now can it? 🫂
ETC ETC E-
Tumblr media
Idk I felt like saying this :') have a nice day please 🫂

Blurry the Explorer — Angel Ecology (Island House)
Tumblr media
Angel Ecology by Blurry the Explorer
“In the Foot,” which closes side one of this ebullient cassette release, pulses with bouncy synths and urgent percussion, and yet, though it moves inexorably, it also exists in a sunny, expansive, drifting now. “Make it blurry,” croons the singer, in a nodding chorus, the words floating over stinging guitars, so that the physical momentum is undeniable, but so is the dreaming bit. Angel Ecology explores the fruitful intersections of jazz, pop, dance, jam and bossa nova, evoking Talking Heads, Os Mutantes and Stereolab. It grooves and it meditates at the same time.
A four piece, with members hailing from all over the world, Blurry the Explorer made one prior album, a self-titled notable for a spoken word guest appearance from Brian Eno. The band’s core members include Brooklyn-based drummer Jeremy Gustin (Star Rover, the Ah and support for Delicate Steve, David Byrne and Marc Ribot), Brazilian bassist Ricardo Dias Gomes (a mainstay of Gaetano Veloso’s band), the New England based experimental pop guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Dugré and London composer and guitarist Leo Matthew Abraham. Several of Blurry’s members have connections to the New England jam band Rubblebucket, and both Toth and Kalmia Traver make appearances on this tape.
The album starts strong with stately, lyrical “Leave It In the Air,” a cut where battering kit drumming is reinforced by breathy “ahs,” for a swaying, hip shifting propulsion. It might be Gomes singing, since the lyrics seem to be in Portuguese, though the words are distilled and abstracted into staccato blots of sound that burst like soap bubbles in the air. The beat lands hard, but the song itself is feather light. “My Jade Loves Me,” which follows, is the one that will remind you most of Talking Heads with its jabbing, sharp guitar notes, its butt-moving, subliminal thump of bass.  The title track, which comes on the cassette’s second side, flutters weightless and gorgeous on whispery vocals and a jangle of guitars. The Australian songwriter Indigo Sparke soars over dense beds of guitar and percussion. The sounds shift in and out of alignment, resolving into swaying, Brazilian beach sensuality, then decomposing into noisy experimentation. “The Best West Mess” lays down a minimalist, stick-figure beat, then entrances the ear with soft, undulating melody. The cerebral collides with the hedonistic in these cuts, so that you hardly know whether to dance or gaze into space. Maybe both?

In the year 2245, amidst the sprawling metropolis of Neo-Rome, the Benedictine Confederation held sway with a blend of ancient wisdom and cutting-edge technology. It was a time of great progress and greater secrets, where the barriers between human and machine blurred, and the arcane met the algorithm in shadowed corridors.
Within the heart of this nexus lay the Aventine Sanctuary, a bastion of the Confederation's power. It was here that Sister Aeliana, a cybernetic oracle, served with eyes that pierced beyond the veil of time. Her gaze, an unsettling hue of crimson, bespoke her connection to the ‘Chronosnet’, a digital lattice of predictive algorithms and temporal data streams. Cloaked in the delicate black lace of her order, which had been woven with nanofibers to interact with the Sanctuary’s sentient systems, she was both enigma and enlightenment, the very embodiment of the Confederation's mystique.
Sister Aeliana's existence was the culmination of the Confederation's clandestine ‘Project Sibylla’; she was designed to interpret the ebb and flow of causality, to see threats and opportunities ripple through time like waves upon an ocean vast and uncharted.
One fateful eve, as Neo-Rome’s twin suns dipped beneath the horizon, Sister Aeliana's vision beheld a convergence, a knot in the temporal weave that could unravel the fabric of the Confederation. An entity, known only as the Null, had emerged. It was an anomaly, a shadow that feasted on data streams, erasing histories and futures alike.
The high council, robed in technological splendor, convened with Aeliana at the center of the Aventine’s grand hall, their faces illuminated by the glow of holo-emitters and the silent flicker of concern. “The Null must be contained,” they declared. “For if it breaches the core of the Chronosnet, all that is, was, and ever will be within the Confederation's domain could cease to exist.”
Tasked with the impossible, Sister Aeliana journeyed into the labyrinth of the digital realm, her consciousness diving deeper into layers where physical and virtual became indistinct. Here, she faced the Null, a void of anti-information, where she cast sacred algorithms to bind and unravel its essence.
In the climactic nexus, where light and shadow danced a precarious ballet, Aeliana's form transcended, becoming a living conduit of the temporal stream. She channeled the collective strength of the Confederation's history, from the ancient chants of old Earth's Benedictine monks to the prophetic codes of the far-future scribes, creating a symphony of time that resonated through the Chronosnet.
The Null quivered, its form destabilizing, as the past and the potential future it had consumed were liberated, flowing back into the rightful streams of time. Sister Aeliana, her body and spirit pushed beyond limits, held fast, her eyes a beacon in the swirling dark.
As dawn kissed Neo-Rome, the Aventine Sanctuary hummed with renewed life. Data streams flickered into clarity, histories settled into their grooves, and futures unfolded anew. Sister Aeliana returned, her mission complete, her eyes now a soft silver, reflecting not just the light of the world, but the myriad possibilities within it.
For the Benedictine Confederation, it was a victory not just for their dominion, but for the sanctity of time itself. And in the heart of the Aventine, Sister Aeliana stood as a testament to the power of foresight, a guardian of the temporal order, forever gazing into the weave of what may come.

Dreams of suicide
From sunset to day break, the psyche brain might extend a dubious condition of one's life through a horrendous act, for example, falling, bouncing into the water, or more regrettable, "ending it all". At the point when somebody longs for ending it all could be a sign of looming risk or more awful; their life no longer holds importance to them.
A ton of the time, dreams of suicide are not a promise of something better since they pass on bad messages. It could foretell the termination of a significant friendship, your work, or even the demise of a friend or family member, which is certainly not an incredible inclination to recognize.
Nonetheless, it's not all terrible, these fantasies could likewise be deciphered as resurrection or an admonition sign. It might imply a crucial point in the visionary's life, demonstrating that the tides are going to change.
Anything that deductions you draw from self-destructive dreams, it is important you focus on the fantasy. We examine the segments that follow understandings to self destruction in a fantasy and potential answers for the fantasy.
A few cases can emerge from "self destruction in a fantasy, "and every one should be assessed prior to making any legitimate determinations. Here are some normal self-destructive dream situations and what they could mean.
1. Longing for Yourself Endeavoring To End it all This is one normal self destruction dream. Whether endeavoring or ending it all, the individual is encountering a feeling of looming catastrophe, which fills in as the impetus for a profound psyche want to take one's life. It could likewise be because of extreme despondency, tensions, mind-set swings, and the inconceivable loss of a person or thing.
At the point when this occurs, one must re-access one's psychological, close to home, and actual state to track down importance in one's life. They ought to make however many critical life altering events as could be expected under the circumstances.
2. Dreaming About A Relative Ending it all A fantasy about a relative or direct relation ending it all could be because of embarrassment, conflicts, regret, or a feeling of being decided by them. Your relationship with them might impact the sensations of culpability you project, bringing about terrible dreams. At the point when this happens, it is suggested that you contact that relative again to keep a solid and blissful relationship.
On the other hand, it could likewise be deciphered as a sign that now is the right time to relinquish their pessimism or that they need your assistance here and there. In a contention circumstance, open correspondence or finding a go between is the best strategy to keep away from laments.
3. Dreams Of A Life partner Ending it all The fantasy of a life partner or sole mate ending it all is an unpleasant reality. It suggests that something in your ongoing relationship is making you feel blue.
One potential clarification for this fantasy is that you feel subliminally dismissed by your mate, or that your life partner feels disregarded. You may likewise have started to think that the relationship is presently not beneficial or worried about their betrayal.
Anything the circumstance, it is ideal, you and your accomplice figure out it together. Find a trade off that gets you both in the groove again, or better, get to know each other, maybe a night in bed, and examine the issue with your accomplice. Resolve any basic issues before the relationship self-destructs.

On the (roughly) 449th episode of The AM, we enter into December with a mix of ambient sounds and icy-cool dream pop. Opening with Richard Norris' ambient mix of Mark Peters' latest single, and closing with a track from Canada's Fresh Snow (in honour of the fact there's plenty of that in Calgary this morning), the episode's highlights include new sounds from Calgary (and ex-pat Calgarian) artists like Postnamers, Bristol Manor and LT Leif, psych-tinged grooves from Adrian Quesada and Beak>, and a throwback to "the most famous utterly obscure rock band in America."

I Have An Opinion On - Slipknot’s Discography from Worst to Best Slipknot is a band that’s been around since the “golden” era of nu-metal, and they’ve somehow outlived a huge amount of bands to show up from the genre’s rise and fall from popularity, and in that time they’ve mostly kept the same lineup from the first album onwards, with notable changes coming after the death of bassist Paul Gray and the departure of drummer Joey Jordison. I enjoy all of Slipknot’s material to varying extents, and to this day they have released five studio albums, with none of them being objectively bad. This ranking, as always, is my personal opinion and is (mostly) based on personal enjoyment. #5 - ALL HOPE IS GONE (2008) When the absolute best songs on one of your albums come from the special edition, you have a problem. While still being a good album, All Hope Is Gone is a disappointment for many reasons, most of them stemming from the band’s transition to a groove metal sound. While most of the singles off of this album, such as “Psychosocial”, “Dead Memories”, “Sulfur”, and “Snuff”, are great songs, and the two tracks on the special edition, “Child of Burning Time” and “’Til We Die”, definitely being the best on the album, none of the deep cuts really hit home except for maybe “Gematria (The Killing Name)” and “Butcher’s Hook”. Most of the deep cuts here bleed into one another to a point where they lose individuality, and something like that is surprising to hear from a Slipknot album. It doesn’t help that, from what is known according to interviews with the band themselves, the recording process and production of this album was an absolute mess. It’s not bad, but it’s definitely weak, and that’s mainly the reason I just don’t come back to this album all that much. BEST TRACKS - Gematria (The Killing Name), Sulfur, Psychosocial, Dead Memories, Butcher’s Hook, Snuff, and Child of Burning Time + ‘Til We Die off of the special edition. WORST TRACKS - Gehenna, Wherein Lies Continue, and All Hope Is Gone. #4 - VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES) (2004) It’s weird, this might be the Slipknot album I’ve listened to the most, and yet the remaining three besides this all seem to outclass it. Vol. 3 is the band’s first true exploration of different metal styles, with this album leaning a lot towards alt metal, while still being rooted in Slipknot’s nu-metal beginnings. I enjoy this album a lot, but the band’s other material really just outshines it. There are some fantastic songs here though, with big singles “Duality”, “Vermilion” and “Vermilion Pt. 2″, and the Grammy winning “Before I Forget” all being great, but deep cuts like “The Blister Exists”, “Opium Of The People”, “Pulse Of The Maggots”, “The Nameless”, and personal favorites “Circle” and “Danger - Keep Away” (although the Full-Length Version on the special edition is the best version of the song) are all classics in their own right. While there are a few songs that are weak compared to the rest of the track-listing, this is definitely a solid and consistent album. BEST TRACKS - The Blister Exists, Duality, Opium Of The People, Circle, Vermilion + Pt. 2, Pulse Of The Maggots, Before I Forget, The Nameless, and Danger - Keep Away (I prefer the Full-Length Version on the special edition). WORST TRACKS - Prelude 3.0, Welcome, and The Virus Of Life. #3 - SLIPKNOT (1999) From this point onwards, this gets a lot harder. Slipknot’s three best albums are all very close for me, but personally, Slipknot’s debut self-titled album just has to get the bronze medal. Considering the amount of reissues and tracklist changes this album has gone through due to lawsuits and other reasons, I will be judging this album based off of the first 16 tracks on the 10th Anniversary version, which includes both “Me Inside” and “Purity”. With that being said, there’s a huge argument for this being the #2 or even the #1 spot. From the opening track composed of Charles Manson interview samples and onwards, this album is back to back chaos and brutality, with no soft songs to be seen, unlike the band’s later works. The two singles “Wait And Bleed” and “Spit It Out” are classics, but this album’s deep cuts are the real strength here, so much so that damn near the entire album could make the BEST TRACKS list. It’s a wild fucking ride from start to finish, and an amazing debut by what would quickly become one of the biggest metal bands around. BEST TRACKS - (sic), Eyeless, Wait And Bleed, Surfacing, Spit It Out, Tattered & Torn, Purity, Prosthetics, No Life, and my personal favorite Scissors. WORST TRACKS - 742617000027, and then Only One, Eeyore, and Me Inside, which aren’t bad at all, just weak compared to the rest. #2 - .5: THE GRAY CHAPTER (2014) A perfect blend of Slipknot’s heavy and melodic sounds used throughout their career, .5: The Gray Chapter has cemented it’s place in the #2 spot. While I do enjoy Slipknot and this album around the same amount, .5 just barely edges it out due to the technical aspects it possesses. All of the singles on display here are gold, from the lead single “The Negative One” to personal favorites like “Killpop” and “Custer”, and even the opening track “XIX” are all amazing in their own ways. The deep cuts here are among some of the band’s best, with the combination of “Goodbye” and “Nomadic”, the closing track “If Rain Is What You Want” on the standard edition, and even the surprising lead vocal performance of Shawn “Clown” Crahan on “Be Prepared For Hell” is nice. This album is the perfect cross of Slipknot’s trademark anger with the technical and melodic moments they’ve had throughout their career, and it’s definitely worth a listen, especially if you weren’t so hot on it the first time you heard it. BEST TRACKS - XIX, Sarcastrophe, AOV, The Devil In I, Killpop, Goodbye, Nomadic, Custer, The Negative One, If Rain Is What You Want, and Override off of the special edition. WORST TRACKS - Skeptic and maybe The One That Kills The Least. #1 - IOWA (2001) How ironic is it that Slipknot’s darkest album would shine to the top of their discography? Iowa is the band’s heaviest and least melodic album, and it fucking rips you apart from start to finish, but damn, is it an amazing thing to witness. Straight from the utterly off-putting and disturbing opener “(515)”, you know that this album is gonna fuck you up, and it absolutely delivers through 14 tracks of unrivaled fury. From singles like Grammy-nominated “Left Behind” and “My Plague”, to deep cuts like “People = Shit”, “Disasterpiece, “The Heretic Anthem”, “Gently”, “Skin Ticket”, “New Abortion”, and the absolutely haunting and heavy, yet somehow subdued and calming closing title track, this album is flawless and is definitely worth a listen. Give it a spin, but don’t be surprised if freaks you out. BEST TRACKS - IT’S SLIPKNOT’S IOWA. ALL OF ‘EM. WORST TRACKS - NONE OF ‘EM.

Let Me Make Myself Clear
Every so often, you have to grab life by the scruff
of the neck and wrench it back into position, or
haul it through a plate glass window to splash out
into sunshine and swirling shards to plummet down
onto the roof of an idling car waiting to take some
hung-over accountant to the airport so that he can
fly back to Memphis to his cheating wife who has
been sleeping with the neighbor’s teenage son who
mows their lawn, beneath which, unbeknownst to
them all, lies buried the remains of a local gunshop
owner who ran afoul of some drug dealers posing
as landscapers, but now that the development has
attracted young professionals with families, and the
taxes have skyrocketed, nobody remembers those
days of gunfire and sirens, the same kind that remind
old men about the war where all their families died
in a rainstorm of bombs, but once your hearing has
been damaged, that low hum follows you like a bad
record twisting in its final grooves after the song
has ended like a subliminal reminder of futility and
pain, but one that nobody else can detect, for your
memories are now the loudest thing you can hear,
so if they refuse to stop shouting at you, shove their
faces into a toilet, step on the lid, and flush it away,
for when you find that opportunity to purge yourself
of the past and reanimate the glow within you, use
your bare hands, and never take no for an answer.

Tumblr media
Hey there! Thank you for the request 🥺🥺 I had a bit of a roadblock with this one simply because I couldn’t think of a prompt, BUT I eventually thought ‘why not write about the holidays’ so I got into a groove with it! Once I got into it, it was a really fun write! I hope that this is what you expected and/or lives up to your expectations!

For some reason, you were in an incredibly festive mood this time around. Maybe it was something about how the gilded sunlight made yours and Kakashi’s home feel more… Well, home-y. Maybe it was the remnants of your food that you’d made earlier for your lunch still lingering around the house, or the kids of the village running around outside of your windows, whether subliminally training or not undeterminable, reminding you of your youth. Time had gone by so fast, and already you’d been in Japan for about two years and a half. You already knew that, in general, the people of the area didn’t celebrate Halloween, and actually it was a week AFTER Halloween would’ve taken place in America, but something about today… Something about today made your festive bone quiver and you decided to do SOMETHING to celebrate.
Since you’d picked up on the shinobi not celebrating American holidays like you were used to, you avoided asking Kakashi about it. Come to think of it, he never really did anything you were accustomed to besides the staring thing; and when you got together he tried to give you food related nicknames. You had to sit down and explain to him why it wasn’t okay and why it made you uncomfortable and then he thoroughly apologized and left it at that. He didn’t really have any nicknames for you, and from research you found that most women in Japan (and men) only go by their given names with -chan/san at the end which was cute, but if everyone had to call you that then it’d lose meaning and it wouldn’t be as cute.
Even still, though, you decided that today would be the day that you participated in the festivities of the holiday season that, in America, would be fast approaching. The only question for you was who you were going to dress up as and suddenly a thought formed in your head as you popped up from the couch and scurried to your guys’s room. You’d dress up as your hero, your boyfriend Hatake Kakashi! He wouldn’t expect it, you’d be able to see how everything fits, AND it’d be cute- at least you thought- and it’d give you something to do so that the crisp, perfect day didn’t go to waste.
You sifted through the closet with eager eyes as you hummed softly, some of your curls coming loose and falling down by your face, your dark brown beautiful eyes twinkling as you pulled out the parts to the outfit he wore from day to day, your eyebrows knitting a little as one corner of your lip lifted a little. “This man, so help me black Jesus,” you whisper softly noticing how much heftier your wardrobe was than his. He had the same outfit to go over about 5 or 5 times, black sweatpants, black shorts, and 3 different headbands all crushed, neatly, together on one side of the closet while your clothing took up the other half. You shook your head and closed the door with your hip once you were sure you had everything you needed for your little plan. You looked it over excitedly, your slender auburn fingers contrasting almost perfectly against the colors of his uniform. “Damn… I never noticed that till now,” you laugh softly as you remove your shirt and start to pull on articles of the outfit, trying to mimic exactly how you saw Kakashi wear his so you didn’t accidentally disrespect him. Of course he only had 2 masks and a shirt with a mask that you’d sewn onto it, and you decided not to mess with any of it. You didn’t want to hide your face at all whatsoever, especially behind masks that might’ve well have been your boyfriend’s comfort items. You had pretty much everything on, the worn out navy blue bringing everything together, the green brightening your pretty almost black eyes. You giggle softly as you look in the mirror and decide to do something with your hair before it dried completely- you’d taken a shower only 30 minutes prior and your hair was a little damp. You scurry off to the bathroom with the bandage and garter in one hand, your yellow hair pik in the other. You looked extremely excited, for once taking a moment to completely love and indulge in yourself. Being in an area where your existence was offensive to others to suddenly going to a place where absolutely nobody looked even close to you was an extreme shift, but Kakashi made it okay, literally brawling with anybody that so much as looked at you the wrong way. You had a small bit of tummy, but he loved that about you; and it’s not like it slowed you down any, made you unreliable, or made you any less attractive than you were. In fact, to some people it wasn’t even really noticeable unless you were wearing certain things. You also had to drop the American style and adopt the Japanese locale and honestly, while that was a HUGE shift, Kakashi helped with that too. Sometimes you’d get yourself in trouble with how you spoke though; that American lingo that’d been generationally passed down to you finding its way showing up and showing out, especially when someone wanted to make fun of your hair, or your physique and compare you to the other local girls, most noticeably Ten-Ten, Lady Tsunade, Sakura, and Hinata. They argued that the more pale girls were more attractive; because you could play in their hair and you wouldn’t have to worry about one slowing you down- at which remarks you stuck the shit talkers to a tree with your kunai for hours after you thoroughly cussed them out and ribbed them a little, telling Kakashi what’d happened so he could go cut them down. On the flip side, the kids absolutely adored you and loved when you were out so they could play tag or ask you unnecessary questions or get some treats from you.
You quick-washed your hair in the sink and started to blow-dry it deciding that you’d give yourself an at home blowout so that you could complete the look. Being the multitasker you were born into being, you found something to prop the blowdryer up while you piked your hair out quickly, smiling as you watched your hair fluff up, watching your coils straighten and then get bigger until it couldn’t anymore. Then it hit you; Kakashi hadn’t seen your hair blown out except once and that was while you were braiding it back and his eyes were fixated on your fingers as he wondered how a person could do that. At this point, your hair was halfway done, and while you let the tool dry your hair even more, you attempted to wrap the bandage around your thigh and it only BARELY made it, your thigh utterly choked in the process. You looked down at your leg and then pensively looked at the garter and decided that wouldn’t fit around your leg and you let out a frustrated sigh. “That man, is fine as fuck, but why he built like a bean pole,” you huff quietly as you let the bandage loose from trapping your thigh before your mind wandered to him. “…. Aight so maybe he got a LITTLE bit of muscle, but we aint talkin’ about that right now,” you laugh softly before looking at your phone seeing that he sent you a text signifying that he was on his way back from training for the day and that he was fine. You smiled cheerily at your text and tilted your head some at yourself, using your pik to fluff your hair out more before you scurried back to your guys’s room and snatched one of his spare headbands up, securing it quickly and tactfully. You looked at yourself in the mirror, your hands coming up and sliding into the arm holes of his navy green vest. You turned to one side, then to the next, then finally you looked at yourself from a front profile and your eyes glistened a little. “You’re… so heroic,” you mumbled under your breath before you heard some clatter coming from outside of the room.
“Oh right… You can do that,” you say as you open the door and watch him freeze completely in his spot, his eyes slowly raking over you from head to toe then back up again, his stoic expression unchanging from what you could tell. “H-Heyy… Honey,” you smile nervously as you wave with one of your gloved hands. He walked towards you and slipped one side of the headband over one of your eyes and then he stifled a soft grunt under his breath.
“It’s Kakashi. We’ve talked about this,” he said softly before he looked over his shoulders, his hands sliding in his pockets again as his back straightened out some. “….Why are you wearing my clothes,” he asked with a slight edge to his voice, meanwhile you were still frozen in place, your legs starting to quiver some. You didn’t know why he was being so cold to you and it made you just a little insecure. “Particularly… Those,” he said as he stared at the wall below the TV you both had, his legs crossed as he leaned back into the couch.
“Damn so you not gonna say ‘hi.’ Or ‘I missed you,’ or nothin’ like that hm? Well… My bad, I guess I’ll just go take it off,” you say softly, the spirit of the day becoming crushed. He mused softly and his head only tilted a small bit. He didn’t even look at you and you noticed this. The whole time you were here… The whole time you were together the only thing you wanted was his eyes on you and his praises. You were struggling and it was on you for the most part because you hadn’t reached out to him for help. He was a real big one for “say what you mean or need,” or something like that. You LOVED the idea behind the last stretch of the year; the days designated for giving thanks, hanging out with the ones you love, amazing food, and gifts, and movies, and music. All of it… But having come from where you had, you never really had good times or a good chance to make memories. Now that you were old enough to have someone of your own and actually be able to create memories, you wanted to… But instead you’d been trying to force it out of your life to make your man happy, however you weren’t having it anymore. You just didn’t know how to bring it up.
“Mm.. What’s-“
Before he could even finish speaking, you’d vanished back into your guys’s room and shut the door behind you. He sat back in the seat and he let out a low drawn out breath and then stood up. Within one second he vanished from the living room and appeared right in front of you with his arms crossed.
“I asked why you were wearing my clothes, not that you had to take them off,” he said as he looked blandly at your hurt expression. “And I was trying to ask what was up with you,” he said as he reached one hand out and gently tipped your head up, his free hand reaching for where your bangs covered your eye but then he stopped as he usually did and he tilted his head some. “May I?” He spoke from behind his mask. You push his hand out of the way and move your hair out of your face by yourself, your sharp eyes peering into his. This time his eyebrows rose a bit more noticeably and usual and he waited for you to talk so he could listen, his hands now in his pockets.
“Yknow… I’ve tried to work what is normal to me out of my system… And when I was younger, that would’ve been… Easier. But now, it’s not… Kakashi, when you don’t look at me it makes me feel undesirable… Because nobody else looks at me unless they’re making fun of how flat and wide my features are… or how damn burnt I look even though this is my natural skin tone! I just… Want you to call me your baby once in awhile damnit! I want to call you *mine* and not just… Ka-ka-shi. Everybody calls you that… And… I get jealous when I see the other people hanging out with you, the cooler people with the sharingan variants, or the cool eyes and the people with the slim builds, or the people with the advanced shinobi skills that are greater than mi-“ You hadn’t noticed that while you were talking, Kakashi pulled his mask down, then you were interrupted with a kiss. It was a soft, but soulful kiss; the kind where one of his gloved hands had you by the chin and the other by the back of your head. The kind where you could feel his body heat completely wrapping you up. The kind where you felt his trembling breath break his completely calm composure. Your hands were gently pressed against the back of his arms, one of your hands at his elbow as he pulled away and allowed his eyes to slowly open. His shadow was cast down onto you and you saw his eyes squint a little, his smile hidden by the mask he’d pulled back up after the kiss. On the other hand, your eyes were wide and your lips were barely parted, your eyes glistening as you looked over his mostly hidden smile. Your knees buckled under you and he helped make sure you didn’t fall, his chest pressed against yours.
“You done?” He asked as he helped you stand upright again. You were dazed just staring at your man and he smirked a little as he pulled his mask down again still standing close to you. “I see… You want everyone to know that you’re mine and vice versa? That’s it? That’s why you’re wearing my clothes today…? You want me to… Call you mine? Right?” He spoke quietly, he was ONLY talking to you, his deep voice getting a little more hoarse as he continued to drone on, his hands on your hips pulling you closer to him, his intense gaze still cast into your eyes. You swallow hard and nibble the inside of your cheek. “You want you to call you my baby? My beautiful, perfect baby girl? Hm? Is that why you’re acting out? Or… You want me to show you that I care more, right? Maybe… You want me to make dinner once? Or bring you flowers? Or watch you train? Or… Cheer you on? Right? Perhaps tease you a little… Or hold you this close all the time?”
You nod slowly and then look away already knowing what this was sort of leading up to but his slender fingers forced your gaze back on him.
“Look at me when I’m talking to you, baby,” he said softly as he tilted his head a little. “If you wanted that… Why didn’t you just say so? I can’t read minds… And I’m still relatively new to this whole… Romance scene,” he said softly as he gently stroked your cheek with his thumb. “You know this. I’m a little… Dense? I’m not sure if that’s the proper word. But…. You’re just… Ugh… I didn’t know that me hanging around people made you jealous- perhaps it’s in my best interest to just tell you how much you mean to me all of the time. You’d want that too, right? I know you would,” he said softly as his fingers gently trailed up your back. “Or… Maybe you want to have a little bit more sex? Is that apart of it?” The question made your eyes wide, skin burn with an invisible blush, and your jaw drop a little. He let out a hollow laugh in turn, gently pushing your jaw up to close your mouth with the tips of his fingers. “Baby steps. I got it. For now, let me just say this: You’re beautiful… All of your scars, curves, marks and all. Those coffee colored eyes of yours are so much more… Stupefying than any sharingan I have seen and will ever see…. The little spark they get when you’re determined, or that soft glisten when you get embarrassed,” he said as he looked over your whole face. “Your body… Your whole body… Is amazing… You don’t have to be slim to be an amazing shinobi; and so help me, my beautiful queen,” he says softly as he leans down so he’s eye level with you. “If you ever discredit yourself like that again, I’ll work you out so that you’re not able to move for the next week. You’re right on the fast track to be a fine shinobi- possibly even the greatest at that. Well… Not greater than me, but that’s another story and another conversation,” he said quietly as you were pushed back onto your bed while he stood over you. “Are those idiots getting into your head again?” His eyebrows furrowed a little as his hands slipped back into his pockets.
Finally you were able to find your words again and you crossed your legs out of habit. “Y-Yeah… For… Like… The past 3 weeks they’ve been telling me that I’m too slow… Or I’m too… Wide… Or making fun of me and my eyes, or making fun of how dark I am… Or making fun of my hair! My damn hair! It hurts… A lot… And we’re together, but I don’t want to be known as that abnormal girl that calls on her boyfriend every time she needs saving. I got it… Aight? I can handle that… But… That’s why I need YOUR praises…. To validate me I guess… I already know I’m THAT… girl… But I want to hear it from you… I want you,” you mumbled softly. “And the reason I’m dressed up like this is because I’m dressed up for Halloween- In America it’s a day where people dress up and do their makeup and hair and have fun at parties or go trick or treating to get candy and stuff! I’ve always loved it despite not being able to… Participate much,” you say softly as you rub your arm. “I dunno, I guess I just wanted to celebrate the holiday season this year- even if we never do it again, I at least want one memory of a great holiday season with mine… With you,” you say softly. He listens to everything you say with an opaque grin on his face.
“If that’s what you wanted, then why didn’t you just say that?” He said softly as he climbed over you, his hips barely resting in your lap as your heart skipped a beat. He pushed you to lay down on the bed and his hands rested right by your head, your eyes peering up at him with a soft grin rested on your face.
“I-I d-didn’t w-want to get told no… I d-didn’t want to… Bother you with something that seemed so insignificant… I didn’t want you to think of me as weak,” you say softly as he gently kisses your neck. You shuddered a little and bit your lip as you tilt your head up some.
“Well now’s your hot seat,” he huffed quietly against your neck. “Tell me what you want, tell me everything you want, and I’ll do it until you tell me that you don’t want it anymore,” he said as he looked back into your eyes, your hands rested against his chest as you thought for a moment before speaking again. “W-Well… I want you to call me your baby and vice versa… Or come up with a nickname or something… I want you to watch me train and root for me, I want you to let everyone know who I belong to, but allow me to show who you belong to, too… I want you to tease me and hold me close… Everywhere… I want you to go on dates with me and do holiday stuff with me… I want you to make me feel wanted and loved… I just fucking want *you* Kakashi…” you say softly as you look up at him. Upon gazing, you notice that his expression had soften significantly, and the hold he had on you was more protective than ever. “A-And I guess more s-sex would be cool,” you say softly and he chuckles quietly in return. You reach one of your hands up and gently cup his face, your thumb gently caressing his cheek. “You know… You should smile more… You’re quite handsome when you do… Well I mean you’re fine as hell either way, but I like it when you smile… And laugh like that…” you say softly as he leans his head into your hand a little more. He kisses your clothed palm and smiles just for you and suddenly you took on a breathless expression, your eyes halfway open as he blushed a little and you just took this moment to adore him, everything about him. “That’s what you want from me? Okay,” he said softly before moving to pin your hand weakly to the bed above you, his eyes both gazing into yours- well as much as he could anyway seeing as your hair practically swallowed your face leaving your bottom half of your face exposed for him. You could see him just fine, he just couldn’t see you… And for the moment that was fine. His gentle lips pressed against yours from above and your eyes fluttered shut as usual when this happened. You felt a little touch starved because he didn’t like contact very much, but he was warming up to it a little more. You wrapped one of your arms around his waist and pulled him closer, and then the two of you melted into each other on the bed in a fit of grunts, deep, passionate, soft kisses, dulcet giggles coming from the both of you, his hand wandering up your waist up the natural curve of your body as yours tried to find where his clothing allowed you access to his skin. You found it, your warm fingers contrasting against his lukewarm skin. He jolted a little and let out a groan before looking at you again, nibbling your lip gently before he pulled away. “You’re amazing,” he whispered quietly and breathlessly against your lips as you tried to control your breathing again.
“Says one of the most notable and historic ninja warriors of all time,” you say with a soft chuckle, moving your hair out of your face so you could look at him and so he could look at you.
“You know… Paths like that carry plenty of… Skeletons in the closet, right?” He said softly as his gaze intensified only a little bit.
“Yeah, and? You still made it… Everyone looks up to you… You’ve killed people and seen plenty of your own killed… And people that couldn’t handle it… Y’know… But, Kakashi Hatake,” you say softly as you turn his head back towards you and your own expression hardens a little. “No matter what, I’ll still love you like the day that I met you… Just like that day you first came to protect.. Well the other person- after they were bullying me… After you checked to make sure I was okay… Baby I love you, and as long as you love me too, I’m gonna be on your side. I’m your woman- I’m your queen, right? A queen needs her partner in royalty, and this house is our kingdom. You’re my king, and unapologetically mine… And I’m the same for you,” you say quietly as you sit up and smile a little. “I know you haven’t been sleeping, Kashi,” you say softly as you gently kiss his lips. “I’m not a super heavy sleeper… You’re safe now, though,” you say softly as you run your fingers through his hair. “Let me go make dinner tonight and… C-Can I decorate?” You whispered softly, expecting a no as you turned and gently pushed him to make him lay on the bed and he chuckled softly, gently grabbing your hand.
“If decorations are what you want, then I don’t have a problem with it,” he said softly, kissing the back of your hand gently. Your skin burned with an invisible flush and you pulled the covers up on him, trying to make the room just a little more homey so that he could sleep better.
“I… Wow… Um… Okay,” you say softly, lighting a candle and setting it on the nightstand, standing in the doorway. “I d-don’t know if I said this already, but I’m gonna make a hot pot for dinner… And I’ll go see if there are any pumpkins in the area… I’ll make us some pumpkin bread and make some cookies for the kids,” you say with a beaming smile, looking at your sleepy man who was already cuddling a pillow on his way to sleep. He admired your soothing voice, able to relax for the first time in a long time, and how the golden sun gave you a gilded glow that made your skin twinkle and your eyes illuminate the room. He had never felt so lucky to have someone as good as you to him, and that was the last thing he saw- or thought- before he slipped off into dreamland and you disappeared behind the door to excitedly start dinner.

If you have shifted already, what's been the best part?
1. What color is your hair? Is it long or short?
Originally it was long blue hair because I know I look good with long hair (like mid back long) but recently I’ve decided to cut my hair like Ranboo’s but longer! So it’s Ranboo’s hair style but longer and blue!
2. Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?
Introverted extrovert! Guess you could say ambivert but I am more introverted around new people and then extroverted around friends!
3. Whats your favorite color?
Royal Blue or Lilac.
4. Whats your eye color?
I say Hazel because there is green on the outer part but it’s very brownish. So Hazel-brown.
5. Favorite food?
Goulash! It’s my all time comfort food and also happens to be my favorite. Really easy to make too.
6. Who is your closest friend?
My shifter friend Lee! Her name isn’t obviously Lee but that’s what I will refer to her as now.
7. If you have one, love interest? If not, name another friend you have!
Genshin: Harem because I can’t choose
Bungou Stray Dogs: Chuuya Nakahara and Osamu Dazai
Streamer: No one! My closest friends are Karl, Wilbur, Quackity, and Charlie
8. Any pets?
I post about this orange haired bitch all the time his name is Jack. A fluffy orange haired cat I’ve had since the summer of 2017
9. If you're in a reality with superpowers, what's your power(s)?
Genshin: Cryo Claymore
Bungou Stray Dogs: uh. Think Resident Evil 7 except less murdery
10. What is your theme song, or just a song that reminds you of yourself?
Paris Decapitates Homophobes - RevengeOfParis
11. Did you keep your CR name, or use a different one?
CR name! My name Kamski comes from Elijah Kamski from Detroit: Become Human so I liked the name I gave myself here!
12. "Strangest" place you've wanted to shift to?
Hm. Nothing comes to mind really.
13. Favorite subliminal you've used?
I dont listen to subliminals, if I do it’s very rare and I end up not liking them.
14. Do you use guided meditations?
Guided meditations work so well for me even if I haven’t shifted to my dr yet. I use this one mainly! The quote in this one that reassures the fact that no one needs you at the moment and that you are free to rest as really helped me too. I swear it makes sense once you watch it.
15. When was the last time you decided to shift?
With college it’s on and off. At least every other day. I’m starting to get back into the groove of things of actively trying.
16. Do you know anyone personally who knows about and/or supports shifting?
My friend Lee! I don’t know how the conversation started but we started talking about it one day and boom! Thats outside of the group chat I’m in that supports shifting.
17. Why are you shifting? If you feel comfortable sharing, that is.
I originally started shifting because of my religion. I’m an omnist pagan who believes that everything is real until it’s not. So this went well with the astral projection I had been trying to achieve as well. I guess I’m also like others that say it’ll be cool to shift to another universe that has all my comfort people in it.
18. Would you ever try group shifting?
Yes yes yes! My friend Lee and I started to plan that out but then plans fell short. Im I’m a group chat where we have two shared DR’s; coffeehouse and mineshift!
19. If you have yet to shift, what are you most looking forwards to?
The part of actually being there. Feeling how real it is and the breath of fresh air once I shift.
20. If you have shifted already, what's been the best part?
N/A

Dust Volume 7, Number 9
Tumblr media
Les Filles de Illighadad
Another collection of short reviews closes out this week at Dusted, with selections ranging from avant garde classical to free jazz to whacko punk to an unusually gender-inclusive guitar band from Niger.  Writers this time included the usual stalwarts, Bill Meyer, Ray Garraty, Jennifer Kelly, Jonathan Shaw, Bryon Hayes, Tim Clarke, Andrew Forell and Chris Liberato. Enjoy.
All Set — All Set (RogueArt)
youtube
In 1957, serialist composer Milton Babbitt’s All Set applied his language-transforming compositional tool kit to the sonic resources of a jazz orchestra. Six decades and change down the road, such ideas haven’t exactly infiltrated the mainstream of either jazz or orchestral music, but they’ve become as handy for some music makers as hammers and nails are for carpenters. So, when saxophonic colleagues Ingrid Laubrock (who sticks to tenor here) and Stéphane Payen (playing the straight alto) needed to come up with a framework to make music together, out came Babbitt’s notion, which they did not play straight, but used as a suggestions for writing their own tunes, and for good measure named their band after the Babbitt’s piece The formative influence manifests in zig-zagging intervallic leaps, but instead of treating these of ends in themselves, the saxophonists carry on constant overlapping dialogues. The rhythm section of Chris Tordini (bass) and Tom Rainey (drums) can’t help but swing, but they do so in a shifting, discontinuous fashion that occasionally leaves it to the saxophonists to play the gaps as well as the horns they use the fill them.
Bill Meyer
Rodrigo Amado Motion Trio & Alexander Von Schlippenbach — The Field (No Business)
The Field by Rodrigo Amado Motion Trio & Alexander von Schlippenbach
Motion Trio is one of tenor saxophonist Rodrigo Amado’s more enduring combos. But it’s not one that has played often in the years preceding this concert, a consequence of the growth and success of its members; Amado, cellist Miguel Mira and drummer Gabriel Ferrandini all keep busy with other projects. So, this encounter with pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach, which took place in Vilnius, Lithuania in 2019, was not just a reenactment of the trio’s favorite tactic of improvising with a strong fourth musician, but a reunion of the trio itself. This means that the process-oriented can listen for three comrades finding reviving a common language at the same time that they confront with an outsider’s efforts to deal with it. Schlippenbach’s playing brings an unusual harmonic density to Motion Trio’s music, which seems to coax an especially dynamic and at times reflective response from the saxophonist. Ferandini, on the other hand, proposes shapes and timbres that seem to build out from Schlippenbach’s intricate constructions, while Mira keeps up a steady, almost subliminal stream of contrapuntal commentary that is simultaneously assertive and nearly subliminal. But some of the concert’s most exciting moments come when the pianist lays out for a second, and you can hear Motion Trio’s members responding to each other.

BangGang Lonnie Bands — H2K On the Way (TF Entertainment \ Anti Media)
youtube
Lots of artists have watched small projects intended only as appetizers grow to surpass their grander efforts. BangGang Lonnie Bands’ recent work, especially his King of Detroit albums, contained a few gems but were bloated in length. There was an ironic twist, as Lonnie’s claimed the throne to the city where he no longer resides. While it remains to be seen what the rapper brings after H2K On the Way, this 15 minutes long EP is his leanest work in years, leaving a long list of LPs behind. Lonnie no longer flirts with scam rap and returns to murder music, fusing gutsiest Michigan-style punchlines with no hostage Californian approach to verse spitting. He’s the naughtiest when he’s trolling the music industry: “Copped a 100 pounds of crank \ should have bought a verse from Drake.”
Ray Garraty
Buffalo Daughter — We Are the Times (Anniversary)
youtube
Buffalo Daughter always caught in the cracks between mainstream and experimental, layering vocal sweetness over chopped up blippy beats, not as wildly original as OOIOO, but not exactly girl pop either. This latest album comes after a long break and a slightly less lengthy COVID lockdown, and it’s got some prickly, dreamy jams, part dance, part pop, part funk, part inscrutable. “ET (Densha)” is the mad, moody single, full of low-end synth blasts and thundering drums, but leavened by high whispery vocals. It’s like Shackleton sound-tracking a Hello Kitty movie. “Global Warming Will Kill Us All” is similarly ominous, with vocoder chants and trippy pop choruses and blown out by phosphorescent blots of synth, but I like “Don’t Punk Out” the best, because it struts like an animatronic James Brown, the funk percolating through gleaming futuristic swells of sounds. If disco’s going to come back, can it be this weird and disorienting?
Jennifer Kelly
Fashion Pimps and the Glamazons — Jazz 4 Johnny (Feel It Records)
Jazz 4 Johnny by Fashion Pimps And The Glamazons
This new EP from Fashion Pimps and the Glamazons manages to fit into the tradition of whacko punk records from Cleveland (and what a tradition that is…) and to comment on the problematic nature of tradition itself. There’s a decided No Wave vibe to Jazz 4 Johnny: listen to it, and you’ll flash on Buy Contortions and on Robert Quine’s attempts to channel Miles Davis and Pharoah Sanders through his guitar. At points you’ll swear there’s a sax somewhere in the buzz and thunder that the Fashion Pimps create — but that’s just Richard Glamazon’s skronky guitar tone, which does Quine one better by not only aping the cadences of a free jazz solo but also the sound of a brassy axe. That’s fun, but we should also recall No Wave’s sharp antipathies for concepts like “tradition” or “perpetuity.” A lot of those bands wanted to neutralize their own existence and thus evade the ultimately conservative action of canonization. Other tunes on Jazz 4 Johnny are more engaged with the later Downtown noise rock scene. The guitar on “Dream Police” gestures toward early Sonic Youth—but even there, the band can’t quite help themselves. Vocalist Steve Chainsaw shouts, “Show me your DNA!” Most of those references are based in Manhattan, so what about Cleveland? The city often recedes into the background when conversations turn to rock-n-roll history, which is too bad. Fashion Pimps and the Glamazons don’t sound all that much like electric eels or Pere Ubu, but the band is tuned into a similarly feral, post-industrial ethos and an avant-garde sensibility that makes anti-art into art you can dance to. Or break things to. Or both. Which may be the best response to the wild and smart tunes on this record.
Jonathan Shaw
Les Filles de Illighadad — At Pioneer Works (Sahel Sounds)
At Pioneer Works by Les Filles de Illighadad
The entrancing At Pioneer Works documents the American touring debut of Niger-based Tuareg ensemble Les Filles de Illighadad, specifically a pair of shows at the eponymous Brooklyn venue. Travelling as a four-piece ensemble, the band created a swirling three-guitar maelstrom, as captured on this pristine-sounding recording. Founder Fatou Seidi Ghali — the first known woman Tuareg guitarist — and her cousin Alamnou Akrouni were joined by Fatimata Ahmadelher, the only other known woman Tuareg guitarist, with Ghali’s brother accompanying on rhythm guitar. Blending the traditional calabash drum and call-and-response vocals of the tende song form with the electric guitar, Ghali and company steep the communal origins of their sound with a gentle clangor. The music is simultaneously hypnotic and driving, the four performers acting as one multi-limbed, multi-throated being. For the most part, Ghali is content setting the pace and playing along with the melody. One exception is the trio of deftly executed solos during “Chakalan,” where she demonstrates her prowess with six strings. Reports from those Brooklyn shows indicate that the band completely enraptured their audience, and if At Pioneer Works represents only a fraction of how powerful Les Filles de Illighadad are live, this writer doesn’t doubt that at all.
Bryon Hayes
Henri Guédon — Karma (Outre National)
Karma by Henri Guédon
You don’t have to be a big fan of R.E.M. to feel overly familiar with “It’s The End of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine).” In dire times, it’s such an easy go-to tune that even adherence to lockdown prescriptions won’t keep it out of your ears. So, deejays, we’ve done your research for you, and found a new tune to soundtrack defiant frugging in the face of disaster. It’s called “Fin Di Mond,” by Martinique-based singer/percussionist/sculptor Henri Guédon. It, and eight more similarly motion-motivating tunes, can be found on Karma, a predominantly celebratory set of retro-futuristic, Franco-Caribbean grooves. Mind you, this music wasn’t retro when Guédon recorded it 46 years ago; the synth lines that swoop through its massed percussion were probably the height of modernity back in the day. Heard now, this music is just the thing to put time itself on pause.
Bill Meyer
HTRK — Rhinestones (Heavy Machinery)
Rhinestones by HTRK
Rhinestones is a sneaky one from Melbourne’s HTRK, a slight but incisive release that seems minor compared to their previous albums but cuts just as deep. Running to a brutally economical 26 minutes, most of the album is built around delayed guitar, drum machine and Jonnine Standish’s ghostly, dejected voice. To a world laid low by the pandemic, Standish sounds startlingly apposite for these times, and track titles like “Sunlight Feels Like Bee Stings,” “Real Headfuck” and “Straight to Hell” signpost the vibe clearly. This is sad, skeletal music, sure to offer a degree of solace if you’re weary, wrung out or wasted — 2021 in a nutshell.
Tim Clarke
Matt Jencik — Matt & Lyra (Trouble In Mind)
Matt & Lyra by matt jencik
Matt Jencik is a member of doomy, spacey Chicago band Implodes, plus he’s released two solo guitar albums: 2017’s Weird Times and 2019’s Dream Character. For his latest, Matt & Lyra, part of Trouble In Mind’s Explorers Series, Jencik focuses on the thick, fuzzy tones of the Russian-built Lyra-8 synthesizer (hence the album title). Having said that, he does pull out his guitars to add some acoustic strumming to “Cmellow Ayellow,” and builds 16-minute closer “Clandestine Half Pipe” around electric guitar drones before the Lyra begins to dominate the frame. Jencik apparently made this music to help him sleep, and while this music is suited to nocturnal listening, with an all-enveloping warmth, there’s also the sense of something looming in the darkness. Whether this presence is reassuring or threatening probably depends on the frame of mind with which you approach this immersive 35-minute release.
Tim Clarke
Joakim — Second Nature (Tiger Sushi)
youtube
French producer and Tiger Sushi founder Joakim’s Second Nature is a reflection on the state of the world. It combines samples of whales, elephants, toads and other wildlife with the kind of pop facing ambient techno from aughts chillout compilations.  It is testament to his skill as a producer that the record doesn’t wear out its welcome despite the occasional lapse into the anodyne and the associations this kind of gentle background music evokes. When Joakim disturbs the tranquility on tracks like “Sferics & Whistlers” with its crackles of static and breakdown of discordant notes, Angel Bat Dawid’s klezmatic clarinet on “Waves Ahead” and the komische roll of “Kepler-39” that one is jolts from reverie and pays close attention, but at 16 tracks it feels like Second Nature needs more such moments.
Andrew Forell
The Killing Popes — Ego Kills (Shhpuma)
Ego Kills by The Killing Popes
Thank god this unfortunately named combo isn’t someone’s absurd scheme to crossbreed the sounds of Killing Joke and Smoking Popes. Instead, the Berlin-based project exists at the crossroads of jazz and electronics. I know what you’re thinking, and no this isn’t a modern take on acid jazz; this crew makes a jazz-on-acid sort of racket. The core Popes are drummer-percussionist Oli Steidle and multi-instrumentalist Dan Nicholls, who together conjure up a brew with a myriad of ingredients. Their genre-defying fusion of disciplines does have a center, however. Steidle’s dextrous drumming and the elastic band bass proffered by Phil Donkin serve as an anchor point for the other elements — both melodic and bizarre — to revolve around. The addition of vocals inserts the sense of narrative, creating a gravity that tugs at the sounds and prevent them from spiralling out of orbit. As zany as Ego Kills may be, it’s jazz-like enough for afficionados to appreciate. On their own, each of the instrumentalists demonstrates a mastery of their craft; together, they create an uncanny sort of magic.
Bryon Hayes
Norman W. Long — BLACK BROWN GRAY GREEN (Hausu Mountain)
BLACK BROWN GRAY GREEN by Norman W. Long
Chicago soundscapist Norman W. Long walks his southeast Chicago neighborhood, listens deeply and records the ambient sounds of nature, the echoes of railyards, wasteland and industrial sites both working and abandoned. Adding subtle electronics and treatments to his field recordings, Long conjures atmospheres that speak to space, atrophy and the delicate symbiosis between nature and humanity. On BLACK BROWN GRAY GREEN he immerses listeners in the often unnoticed aural richness at the intersection of the built, neglected and the natural. His choices about when to augment or to present his sources as are forms a narrative of associations, displacements and tensions. Long’s is also a story of reclamation and recognition, a rumination on the situation of the largely minority and migrant populations who live in the neighborhood, many of whom toil as essential workers across the city in the face of ongoing prejudice and hostility. Site specificity is integral to Long’s art but his themes are universal.
Andrew Forell
Andy Moor — Music For Safe Piece (Unsounds)
Music For Safe Piece by Andy Moor
Music For Safe Piece is the antidote for every piece of children’s music that’s ever made you want to not hear another played or sung note, ever again. Electric guitarist Andy Moor (the Ex, Dog Faced Hermans) and dancer Valentina Campora have included their sons, Elio and Milo, in onstage performance ever since they were so young, they had to be swaddled and strapped to one of their parents in order to participate. The recorded results of this shared adventure are raw, unpredictable and exhilarating. Moor’s guitar, occasionally augmented by a child’s vocalization, a foot pounding the floor or some choice tune fragments on a cassette tape, blazes a trail of reverberations, scrapes and wobbles. In performance, the boys are known to get in on the act, helping pop to make his sounds while mom handles the movement. This music isn’t particularly pacific, but it’s pretty close to the way kids actually play when no one’s stopping them. The technologically adept will find a QR code inside the CD’s gatefold, which unlocks the short film, “Safe Piece.”

RXM Reality — Advent (Orange Milk)
Advent by RXM REALITY
Long-time Hausu Mountain dweller Mike Meegan has relocated to the Orange Milk abode, taming his frenetic brand of electronic mayhem in the process. The blown-out, off-the-grid beats are still plentiful, but with Advent Meegan injects his tunes with melody. He’s also allowed himself to slow down and relax. The vast expanse of “Character Limit” literally breathes deeply as Meegan allows it to swirl around. He drinks up the pleasant melodic aromas of the track before switching gears and unloading burst after burst of explosive beats. “These Days” comes off as an electro-shoegaze hybrid, with gauzy synth pads that float effortlessly among bouncy percussion clusters. Of course, the signature RXM Reality sound — a hybrid of 1990s video game and blockbuster movie — is present and accounted for in tracks like “Allure,” “Screaming,” and “Grip of Evil.” Yet even these balls of energy are tempered with shades of consonance. Having blunted some of the jagged edges of his frantic brand of electronic music, Meegan fits in nicely among the kooky ranks of the Orange Milk imprint.

Macie Stewart — Mouth Full of Glass (Orindal)
Mouth Full of Glass by Macie Stewart
You might already know Macie Stewart as one-half of the complicated indie rock duo Ohmme or for her regular appearances as violinist of choice in Chicago jazz and experimental music scenes, but this solo LP shows another side.  These eight songs are lushly, intricately arranged with strings, orchestral instruments and brass, recorded with precision and clarity, but nonetheless personal and introspective.  “Garter Snake” sheathes flaying honesty with baroque instrumental flourishes. Stewart’s voice is bare and unaffected as she confides, “I am addicted…to indecision,” but she makes riveting choices in framing the melody.  Old-fashioned movie strings swell in the spaces between talking-right-to-you verses; agile guitar chords mark time.  “Finally” begins in bare, Bahian guitar play, as Stewart’s voice flutters and floats an unpredictable but fetching tune.  Strings swoop in at the end of the phrase, lavish and lucid.  The title track unlooses massed, harmonized vocals on the spare architecture of picked guitar, a shock of extravagant sung beauty in an otherwise restrained palette.  Like Wendy Eisenberg, but with different instruments, Stewart weaves post-modern complexity into the delicate fabric of pop songs.  The difficulty — combined with the beauty — makes this music memorable.

Stingray — Feeding Time (La Vida es un Mus)
Feeding Time by Stingray
In places where heavy music is played and endlessly debated, 1982 might be most strongly associated with English street punk — see the ersatz “genre” of UK82, which enshrines the year and ties it to acid green liberty spikes and scuffed Doc Martens. Fair enough. But street punk was thoroughly informed by the dirty working-class metal being made by bands like Motörhead and Venom, and this new EP by Stingray celebrates those noisy intersections of influence. Of course, Stingray’s version of celebration likely involves several cases of Bass Ale, an eightball of something white and a fistfight or two. Or five. The English band features members of other current hard-driving acts, including Subdued, the Chisel and Chain of Flowers, but Stingray doesn’t prize currency. The songs are short, hard and nasty, landing their punches like a “Bomber” and also like a bunch of “Death Dealers.” The guys in Stingray understand the past they’re drawing on, but does music like this have a future? Fuck knows. Do any of us have a future? Does the earthball? The tunes are less interested in such flights of existential angst, and more intent on their rapacious appetites for speed, sweat and raunch. It’s Feeding Time. Get it while you can.

Nick Storring — Newfoundout (Mappa)
Newfoundout by Nick Storring
You’ll miss some towns if you blink. The ones that have given their names to the compositions on Newfoundout might confound both eyesight and your GPS, since they are all ghost towns in Ontario, Canada. The music that Nick Storring has made to go with these titles is correspondingly elusive. Performed entirely by the composer, using strings, percussion and whatever bric-a-brac happened to be at hand, it is by turns lush, staccato and propulsive. “The sounds are never particularly difficult, but they rarely telegraph where they’re going, so if you listen passively, sooner or later you’ll look up in dismay, wondering how things got from where they were to where they are now. “Khartum,” for example, starts out sounding a lot like “In A Silent Way,” and finishes up sounding like a respectfully paced conference of grandfather clock chimes. So, put your head back and your ears forward, and let Mr. Storring do the driving.

Ten Ka — Sonic Geometry: Structures, Patterns And Forms (Jersika)
sonic geometry: structures, patterns and forms by TEN KA
Ten Ka is experimental side project of Deniss Pashkevich, a Latvian woodwinds player. The album title’s invocation of mathematics is apt, since this music is produced by dissimilar musical values acting upon each other. Pashkevich’s sound on tenor sax is full and soft around the edges, which is probably what it takes to be a working musician in a part of the world that doesn’t have much of a jazz tradition; on flutes, and especially the Bansuri, he hints at a far Eastern vibe. He also plays Fender Rhodes and prepared acoustic piano, bringing in further elements of user-friendly jazz, but also some sharp, Cage-y edges. But most of the nine tracks on Sonic Geometry: Structures, Patterns And Forms feature modular synths, which provide a foundation of pulsing bass patterns and some intriguing disruptive, acidic sizzles.  It all adds up to something simultaneously familiar and out of the ordinary.

Luis Vicente / Vasco Trilla — Made Of Dust (577 Records)
Made of Mist by Luis Vicente & Vasco Trilla
Not many improvisational settings are more exposed that the drums and trumpet duet. The two instruments are sufficiently different in timbre and frequency range that you can’t help but hear everything each player does, and also how those actions fit together. Trumpeter Luis Vicente and percussionist Vasco Trilla approach this situation with a combination of relaxed consideration and wholly earned confidence. Vicente can power-play when necessary, but for this session, he exercises restraint, using mutes to extract the most lyrical and vocal sounds he can muster. Trilla likewise seeks out the extremities of his kit, drawing continuous ribbons of widely differing characters, such as the alarm clock-like clatter and low-scrubbed drumskin heard on “Swirling Mist.” Their interactions are not just sonically novel, but trusting and deeply intimate.

Simon Waldram — So It Goes (Self-released)
So It Goes by Simon Waldram
Simon Waldram’s refrain-heavy eighth solo album, So It Goes, is a song cycle on love, loss and acceptance influenced by classic indie pop bands like The Field Mice, The Fat Tulips and The Go-Betweens. Indeed, it was the Grant McLennan-channelling “Don’t Worry,” a plaintive reassurance to a past lover, that initially caught my attention. But “I Miss The Sun” betters it, really laying on the Hammond, and squeezing in something noticeably absent from the other songs: a bridge. “When will we see the lull again/Feels like these dark days will never end,” Waldram sings, reestablishing buoyancy as it winds down repeating the title phrase. There’s promise elsewhere, like on the 1960’s-flavored psych strummer “Boats In The Sky,” before it lifts its bow in harmonic repetition a few too many times without checking its fuel gauge first, stranding itself in the firmament. “The Wild Wanderings of Wildebeests” is another one with potential, but its flawless first verse’s worth of strum and fuzz just recurs instead of building towards something of greater impact. The record hits its lowest point on the nearly nine-minute “Windswept,'' a “Primitive Painters'' rip that goes nowhere productive. When Waldram starts repeating ad infinitum “I miss you so much/ I can’t let go of this dream of ours,” you wish you could step in and save him from himself. A pleasant enough acoustic instrumental with birdsong follows in the form of “One May Afternoon,” serving as a much-needed palate cleanser and bridging the gap to the album’s closer. However, “Shimmer” is another moaner that never quite rounds into shape and instead fades out and then, unremarkably, back in.  There’s an EP’s worth of good material on So It Goes, but as an album it only ends up burning itself with the flame its carrying, leaving the listener wondering, “Who hurt you, Simon?”
