After many hours of online research, talking to distributors, and on-farm working demos, Stuart Tait and his father, John, chose the Horsch Tiger over other contenders because there was simply no better machine for the job.
Stuart and John farm on 2000ha at Mandurama in central New South Wales. They grow wheat, canola, faba beans and forage crops, and breed beef cattle. The farm also hosts soil trials for the NSW Department of Primary Industries, studying subsoil acidity.
Most of the property is undulating land with basalt clay loam soils, alluvial grey loams and a few areas of sandy chocolate loams. For lime incorporation, the Taits had been using offset discs and then doing a second pass with a scarifier.
Stuart said his father was heavily involved in assessing costs, savings and capabilities of various brands of machines and was “over the moon” after working with the Horsch Tiger and seeing what it could do.
“We bought our 3-metre Horsch Tiger MT a year ago and chose it because of the high quality of the build, and because it did a much better job of incorporation and left a great finish on the paddocks,” Stuart said.
“It had been taking two passes for us to get the lime incorporated. Sometimes we’d get one pass done when the moisture was right and then we’d have to wait for rain before we could do the second pass.
“With the Tiger, we can get it all done in just one pass, exactly when we want it done, with better results and considerable savings in time, labour and fuel costs.”
The Tiger MT is a combined heavy 2-row disc system with a cultivator. The 4-bar frame gives good clearance and its features include TerraGrip shanks with MulchMix points, 45cm tyne spacing and single row levelling discs in front of the large packing system.
The Taits got their Tiger fitted with aftermarket sweep points to help with the lime incorporation. They use it with an 8270R John Deere tractor.
Stuart said government trials indicate that surface lime does not effectively penetrate subsoil layers. Lime needs to be fully incorporated to balance soil ph and improve soil biology.
“Our Tiger is also used in soil trials on other farms and there is a lot of interest in how easily this machine incorporates lime and heavy stubble leaving a very good seedbed.
“It’s easy to set and maintain the right depth and get the machine performing the way you want it. You can have the discs in the ground or run it discs-up with just the tynes and the leveller, which is another advantage.
“The Tiger is very robust. We get rocks in some places here and it handles them with no problem. It has been built and engineered to outlast other machines.
“We used it to plough in a green manure paddock of waist-high brassica and we sowed a wheat crop afterwards. No other machine will do as good a job and that’s where the real Horsch value comes through.
“We’re getting great incorporation and improving the soils while minimising damage to the soil structure. The Tiger doesn’t turn soils to powder like other machines do. You look back at the land you’ve worked and it’s the best finish we’ve ever seen. It’s hard to believe it’s been tilled to 200mm.
“We think Horsch machinery is the future of farming. We’re investing in the future of our farm and getting the best results right away,” he said.
“The Tiger is very robust. It has been built and engineered to outlast other machines.”

Sunflower from AGCO Corp. is entering the strip-till field with its new 7600 Series strip-till system.
Available in both eight- and 12-row models, the machines feature a 7-inch by 7 3/8-inch wall toolbar designed with a 10-inch range of vertical travel, adjustable dual down-pressure springs and shearbolt protected shank assemblies. The system effectively manages residue and subsoil compaction and is designed to create an exceptional fertilizer and planting zone.
"Sunflower has been a leader in tillage equipment for many years, and the new 7600 Series strip-till system delivers quality and durability," says Tom Draper, product marketing manager for tillage equipment. "The 7600 Series features a simple design, solid construction and nearly unlimited adjustability to match each farm's unique field conditions and create an ideal seedbed."
Large 24-inch coulter blades and adjustable dual-function scrapers feature depth bands to open the soil at a controlled depth. Steel-fingered row cleaner assemblies move residue away from the row just ahead of the shank.
Knife shank options – for liquid, dry or anhydrous – are available to match any applied fertilizer product. The popular NH3 knife shank features a 15-degree mole point to shatter subsoil hardpan and create the perfect fertilizer zone. Point depth ranges from 4 to 10 inches and is adjustable in 2-inch increments.
Berm blades are fully adjustable with 4 inches of vertical adjustment and angle adjustments of up to 10 degrees. In addition, the berm blades are mounted close to the shank, ensuring the containment of soil flow from the shank, maximizing berm construction.
The spring-loaded, 12-inch diameter berm reels are mounted on 1-inch arbor with triple-lipped greaseable bearings.
Two folding-frame styles of the 3-point mounted machines are offered, including a narrow-transport toolbar with 150-degree fold appropriate for GPS-equipped operations; and the 95-degree folding toolbar for use with (optional) hydraulic row markers.
The machine's simple design translates to fewer service points, which increases ease of service. Heavy-duty construction enhances machine life.

Coggan Farms is a 53,000-acre family-owned mixed farming operation in Queensland’s Western Downs.
Production includes Angus and Speckle Park beef breeders, Dorper/Meatmaster cross sheep, a Meatmaster stud, a feedlot, grazing, and 30,000 acres of irrigated and dryland cropping.
The farm’s undulating terrain has mostly brigalow belah soils, firm to hard-setting with a clay loam surface and medium to heavy clay subsoils. Plant available water capacity ranges from 100mm – 200mm.
For more than three years the Coggans have been using a Horsch Tiger 8MT. They deep rip grassland and prepare it for crops, deep rip irrigation country and general broadacre paddocks, and also use it to incorporate urea and feedlot fertiliser.
The Tiger, engineered to last, has a heavy 2-row disc system and ripper tines. The Coggan’s 8-metre model has a 4-bar frame with good clearance, TerraGrip shanks with low disturbance points, and single row levelling discs in front of the packer tyres and steel packer rollers.
Goggan
Philip Coggan is Manager and part owner of Coggan Farms, and a fourth generation farmer. He said he’s never seen a machine do as good a job as the Horsch Tiger.
“We’ve deep ripped close to 35,000 acres with the Tiger and it leaves the hard dry country very soft. It’s the best tillage machine we’ve ever owned.
“After the Tiger’s been through, we can get up to 12-inches of rain before any water runs off the paddock, even in storms,” he said.
“It does 3 operations in one pass, getting the weeds out, deep ripping the land and leaving a seedbed you can sow straight into when the rains come. It adds up to excellent savings on fuel, time and labour.
“It’s easy to maintain the depth we need. And we can have discs in the ground whenever we want to. 90 percent of the time we run it discs down using the tines and the leveller.
“The frame is extremely tough, and it needs to be, to handle rough conditions where we can turn up big sandstone rocks.
“Getting a Horsch Tiger is one of the best things we’ve ever done,” Philip said. “The only way to top it would be to have another one.”
