Quilt Block Mania - May is Graduation
Welcome to my stop on the Quilt Block Mania Blog Hop. Each of the designers participating in the hop are sharing a block pattern inspired by this month’s theme, which is Graduation.
When I heard that the theme was Graduation I thought of my daughter’s joy upon graduating two years ago. So I used that feeling to design my block—Success.
She had so many hopes and dreams that day, including going on to grad school. Little did she did she know that COVID other ideas. Still, she’s made it work and is a senior tech in a lab that stores vaccines and samples.
Her grad school plans are still in the works and she hopes to go when things open back up.
Graduation is a time for great joy, COVID or no COVID, and my hope is that my Success block will help you to celebrate the milestones in your family. The pattern includes numbers 0 to 9 so you can personalize your block with the graduate’s year.
I used deep red in Katerina’s version because of her school colors. It just happened to match this month’s color palette!
My original design closely follows the color palette, but when I began sewing up the block I decided the background needed to be celebratory and not plain.
Here’s my fabric pull. Again, I matched most of the colors in the palette but also added others to match my graduate.
I call my block Success because that’s how it feels to finally graduate. In my block, my daughter is lightly tossing her graduation cap as if to say, “Yay, that’s done! What’s next?”
Of course, you can personalize your block with any skin color, just make sure it contrasts well with your background so the hand isn’t lost. You can also trim the nails and paint/not paint them as desired to match the person you are making the block for.
If you make this into a mini quilt, you could use a button on the mortarboard in place of the applique one, and use the button to hang the graduate’s real tassel.
Have fun! I can’t wait to see how your block turns out. Use the hashtag #successblock on social media to alert me, or come back here any Wednesday to post your photo on my weekly linkup.
My block uses raw edge applique. If you’ve never tried raw edge applique here is a photo a tutorial here on my blog to help you.
There are tons of designers in this hop so be sure to visit all of them for your free pattern. Here are links to all the blocks in the Quilt Block Mania Graduation Series:

Quilt Block Mania - June is International
Welcome to my stop on the Quilt Block Mania Blog Hop. Each of the designers participating in the hop are sharing a block pattern inspired by this month’s theme, which is International.
Originally, I had thought of making a block about Ireland because I’m Irish. But none of my ideas jelled into anything I really liked.
Eventually I thought about the current world situation and thought, “Why can’t we all get along?” That thought led me to a photo I’d taken a few years back, of some choir kids holding hands. And that idea led to my block for this month!
The photo was taken at a choir retreat I was chaperoning. The kids were playing a game in which they held hands, deliberately tangled themselves, then trying to untangle themselves again without breaking their hand-holds.
In my version, I imagine all types of people holding hands in a big knot that they are slowly and deliberately untangling.
I chose a colorful background and solids for the arms/hands, but originally I had imagined using all sorts of colorful prints for each arm/hand and placing that on a plain background. So you could make your block either way.
There was no preset color palette this month, so we were free to choose any colors we wanted for our block. Here’s my fabric pull.
My husband suggested I call my block “All Together Now,” after the Beatles song. It seemed to match the thought I had for this block so I went with it. Never heard of the song? Here it is below.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/73lj5qJbrms" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
