‘No party is untouchable’, says aspiring kingmaker Babulal Marandi - india news

Jharkhand is waiting for the results of the Assembly elections to see who leads the government in the state for the next five years. But the see-saw battle between the two main opponents - the ruling BJP and JMM-led alliance - is giving the electorate some anxious moments.Follow Jharkhand election results live updates here.The exit polls last week gave the JMM-led alliance an edge over the BJP, but most of them predicted a hung assembly. If that indeed is the scenario, Babulal Marandi-led Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) or Sudesh Mahto-led All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), could emerge as king-makers.As per trends at 11 am, the BJP is leading on 28 and Congress-JMM-RJD alliance is in 39 seats. The AJSU and the JVM are leading on five and five seats respectively. Sources in the BJP say that the party is in touch with Marandi and the AJSU for a possible tie-up if hung house becomes reality. “In politics no party is untouchable,” Marandi told reporters.Asked about supporting Congress or BJP in government formation, Marandi said, “Let the final results come out. J’khand poll: Voting for 12 seats ends, 57.96% votes cast

Voting ended for 12 of the 17 assembly seats at 3 p.m. in the third phase of the polls with 57.96 percent votes being cast on Thursday.

The voting will end at 5 p.m. for the Ranchi, Hatia, Kanke, Ramgarh, and Barkatha assembly seats.

There are a total of 309 candidates including 32 females whose fate will be decided by 56,06,743 voters including 26,73,991 women and 95 third gender. These 17 seats are spread across Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Chatra, Giridih, Bokaro, Koderma and Saraikela. More than 35000 security personnel have been deployed to ensure peaceful polling.

Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu cast her vote at ATI Ranchi while AJSU president Sudesh Mahtyo cast his vote along with his wife at Silli. Jayant Sinha cast his vote in Hazaribagh.

A newly married couple cast their votes at polling booth number 225 of Hazaribagh. Priyanka was married on Wednesday night and she came with her husband for voting on Thursday morning. Maoist leader Maharaja Parmanik’s parents cast their votes at Ichagarh.

In the third phase, the key candidates are three ministers — CP Singh, Ramchandra Sahis and Neera Yadav, Former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi and former Deputy Chief Minister and All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) president Sudesh Mahto.

Of the 17 seats, BJP, JMM, and Congress had won 10, three and two seats respectively in the 2014 Assembly elections.

There is a direct fight between the BJP, Congress and JMM candidates on seven seats. For the Silli seat, the fight is between AJSU president Sudesh Mahto and JMM sitting legislator Seema Devi. There is a triangular fight on six seats. For some seats, the fight is four-cornered or multi-cornered.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das have appealed to the voters to cast their votes.

Jharkhand elections third phase: 12.8% turnout recorded till 9 am

An estimated 12.89 per cent of the over 56 lakh eligible voters exercised their franchise till 9 am on Thursday in the third of the five-phase Jharkhand assembly elections in 17 constituencies.

Though polling began on a sluggish note long queues, with women outnumbering men, were seen in several polling stations.Senior Congress leader and former union minister Subodh Kant Sahay was among the early voters.The voting began at 7 am amid tight security arrangements, officials said.

In 12 seats polling will end at 3 pm, while voters in the remaining constituencies will be able to exercise their franchise till 5 pm.Altogether 56,18,267 voters, including 26,80,205 women and 86 third gender voters, are eligible to vote to decide the fate of 309 candidates, including 32 women nominees.

The seats going to polls in the third phase are Kodarma, Barkatha, Barhi, Barkagaon, Ramgarh, Mandu, Hazaribag, Simaria (SC), Dhanwar, Gomia, Bermo, Ichagarh, Silli, Khijri (ST), Ranchi, Hatia and Kanke (SC), an EC release said.Two of the constituencies are rserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates and one for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidate.

Notable candidates in the fray are former Jharkhand chief minister Babulal Marandi, Urban Development Minister C P Singh and Education Minister Neera Yadav.Babulal Marandi, president of the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik), is contesting from Dhanwar seat, while Singh and Yadav are contesting from Ranchi and Kodarma constituencies respectively.
