I'm also doing one where the world was destroyed but the moon spirit which y'all should know as yue talked to ozai's spirit and was like "hey you're the only hope for the world" and he was like "fuck that" and she was like "you literally have to because spirit world shit" and he was like "ok fine" and she was like "here watch your past" and it was a songfic for a Metallica song (fuck off I made it when I was like 14 holy shit that was a decade ago Jesus Christ) and he was like "wow my dad was a dick and I was a dick ok actually I love my family now and I wanna not be a lil bitchass like my dad and his dad and bring the fire nation to its former glory" so yue was like "TIME MAGIC" and ozai went back in time but with yue's spirit in his mind for guidance and also because tui (or la but it doesn't matter) was the moon spirit again so her spirit needed to inhabit a host and that host was ozai so anyway ozai went to the day where he first met ursa and he was like "ok I'm not gonna be a dickmunch because i love her" and then he's like "WAIT SHIT SHES LIKE 16 AND IM LIKE 70 EW EW EW" so that's kinda squicky but ursa's like "damn boy u fine let's make babys" so they diddle the fiddle and ozai is like "bro I'm not gonna be a punkass bitch to you this time" also yue takes physical form when ozai touches moonlight because idk magic or some shit DONT QUESTION IT and then later on after zuko and azula are born and lu ten is alive because ozai was like "plot n shit" it gets to be the day that zuko speaks out at the war council meeting and ozai's like "aw shit the agni kai, fuck it, I invoke the law of substitution" and ozai fights azulon in the agni kai and kicks his decrepit lil ass and azulon's like "ur fuckin weaksauce kid, time to die" but azula is like "grandpa no don't kill my dad" and she gets half her face burned off BECAUSE FATE I GUESS and ozai's like "I'll fuckin kill you you lil bitch- wait ow my wounds time for sleepy zzzzzz" and when he wakes up iroh is like "oh no brother sad news our dad died I have no idea what happened! by the way hello yue" and she's like "sup" and ozai's like "FUCK YOU CAN SEE HER???" and iroh's like "hell yeah bro I went to the spirit world, I can see ghosts" and ozai's like "ok cool but I'm gonna investigate my dad's murder now bye" and he does and he's like "wow that's weird. hey yue, how'd you kill him" and she's like "*sigh* Iroh told me he has poison tea leaves so I poisoned your dad, I'm sorry" and he's like "FUCK YEAH THATS GREAT NOW MY BROTHER IS THE FIRE LORD" since lu ten survived so ozai was never made second in line, then later on fire lord iroh is trying to make peace with the southern water tribe but age 7 katara is like "no fuck you they killed my mom" and it's all dramatic n shit but then azula is like "[relates to another human]" and katara is like "ok fine I'll give friendship a chance" so the two become BFFs. also zuko and the human yue in the past are like 👀 and eventually they're like. hey let's "political marriage" for "unity" to show we're super responsible and selfless when really we just wanna bond in peace. so they do. and everything looks like it's great. zuko & crew are there to find aang and he's like "hi there fire nation people what's up" and azula's like "oh he is a cutie patootie" and Aang Gets Therapy™ for the trauma and everything seems fine and dandy except OH NO LONG FENG TOOK OVER THE EARTH KINGDOM AND DECLARES WAR ON THE FIRE NATION AND THE WATER TRIBES and oh no he has an army of the most powerful earthbenders at his beck and call, and army which is lead by the fearless, the daunting, the fucking nightmare of the east, THE BLIND MOTHERFUCKING BANDIT. who agreed to help long feng because he was like "yo you're like super strong n badass, wanna have absolute freedom to completely wreck scrublords with earthbending" and toph's like "yes freedom sweet christ let me kick asses and chew bubblegum in that order". oh yeah and ty lee joins the kyoshi warriors super early because it's what she deserves.

sokka wears those nerdy pun shirts that i imagine i’d see on sheldon from the big bang theory (i wouldn’t know because i avoid that show like the plague) and jeans. aang wears shirts from the shows he watches that he probably found at like hot topic when he went with zuko during zuko’s emo phase. zuko wears leftover band merch from said emo phase because he can’t be bothered to buy new clothing (katara tries to thrift with him it doesn’t go well) and whatever iroh gets him. i feel like ty lee would be into the current it girl aesthetic and buy her clothes from shein despite being rich.

people always give sokka shirts with science puns on them as a gift that would never ever think to buy for himself. he thinks they're hideous. but also, hey, free shirt.

i love the idea of aang and zuko having matching t shirts with naruto and sasuke on them respectively. sometimes they'll wear them on the same day and some random fujoshi will go up to them like "awww cute couple's t shirts!!" and aang is like "haha no that's not correct, but thanks anyway!" whereas zuko is just like "KILL YOURSELF." at which point the person who said that now understands why they are wearing those shirts, respectively.

ty lee loves fast fashion and it's one of the main reasons katara refuses to be friends with her (that, and, you know, the fact that katara isn't nearly popular enough to associate with her. but popularity is fake anyway). katara gets suki to call her out on it, though, and from that point onward ty lee actually [gasp] deigns to wear the same outfit twice, and even agrees to let suki take her thrifting. katara is very grateful for suki's impact.

This is not really a ship ask per se just the sokka/suki/mai/ty-lee polycule how do you think it would work? I think their dates are mix of sharp objects, sparring and sparkling conversation. The relationship equivalent of a heist movie (and I guess zukos at kiddie table or something. Guy in the polycule who is just there)

LMFAOOO zuko is like eric andre banging at the gates yelling LET ME INNNN but alas he lacks the spirit and charm to join. he doesn’t even really want to be a part of it either (beautiful women do not actually interest him), he just feels excluded and resentful because it’s unfair that sokka (his favorite special guy) is closer to mai and ty lee (his only peers he ever spoke to until he was 17 years of age) than he is, and also he just generally refuses to understand why suki gets nice things (ie, sokka) and he doesn’t. unfortunately he has just enough self-knowledge to acknowledge that it’s a flaw he possesses rather than projecting that resentment outwards, so he is kind of just sitting there pathetically. alas. many such cases.

as for the group dynamic itself, i think that sokka and suki are a concrete couple, and mai and ty lee are also a discrete coupling, but then suki and ty lee are also together, and occasionally suki and mai also hook up, and sometimes suki mai and ty lee are just a throuple, but then sometimes sokka is also involved, but he’s also usually off doing his own thing so he’s not as present, but don’t get it twisted, he IS there and he’s in this relationship. he’s in this relationship.

it starts because obviously sokka and suki are already a couple and madly in love, and then they befriend mai and ty lee once the war ends. ty lee of course being a kyoshi warrior, so suki ends up spending a lot of time with her showing her the ropes, and also learning chi-blocking from her. suki is obviously just smitten with ty lee almost immediately because she is so talented and beautiful and charming, but also resents ty lee for this fact because she is too proud to admit that ty lee is a better fighter and smarter than she is, but eventually is able to admit her feelings for ty lee much in the same way that she did with sokka.

so suki gets together with ty lee while they’re on kyoshi island together, and concurrently sokka and mai are getting closer in the fire nation babysitting zuko and they very quickly realize that they actually get along really well because they surprisingly have a lot in common and share a sense of humor and love being miserable little haters together. and even though they both hate being in the fire nation, their newfound friendship becomes a consistent source of joy for each of them, and toph included, they are basically inseparable. everyone kind of assumes they’re dating because they truly do spend every second of the day together, but they’re not. or well, it’s more complicated/weirder than that.

when sokka and mai go to visit suki and ty lee on kyoshi island, or suki and ty lee come back to the fire nation (whichever comes first), sokka is already aware that suki and ty lee have gotten together because suki told him about her feelings before she left and then wrote to him about all their developments as they were occurring. and sokka is supportive, but he also finds it kind of strange because he distinctly remembers ty lee as being someone who was constantly flirting with him, and he wonders how them sharing a girlfriend will change that dynamic. but it doesn’t really. ty lee continues to flirt with him. at first it actually makes him so uncomfortable that he thinks he’s gonna throw up, because he’s being besieged on all sides (ie, suki has joined in the incessant flirting, mai is kind of just sitting there wearing this inscrutable yet distinctly infuriating expression) but eventually he just adjusts to this group dynamic.

sokka and suki are actually the ones to get mai and ty lee to finally get their shit together though. suki persuades ty lee that mai has feelings for her while sokka persuades mai that ty lee has feelings for her. and they feel like very helpful samaritans of the world they are so proud of themselves when mai and ty lee finally do get together. they’ve been dancing around their feelings ever since the boiling rock and kept insisting that it “just isn’t the right time” because mai was figuring out her shit with zuko and ty lee was moving to kyoshi island and blah blah blah. but suki’s just like “ARGH I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!” and smushes their faces together basically.

as for mai and suki, they first bond over being evenly matched in pai sho. ty lee and sokka are both geniuses who win every game effortlessly, and suki and mai (who both pride themselves on being highly intelligent) get fed up with getting their asses kicked so they start their own pai sho tournament, no ty lees and sokkas allowed. (fyi: we do actually see them playing pai sho together in ba sing se in the finale, which I think is very cute.) pai sho can be a very erotic game depending on how you play it (iroh can attest to this) so mai and suki, as well as ty lee and sokka, greatly enjoy these battles of wit, and get closer as a result. (yet another reason why zuko isn’t invited into the polycule; he sucks at pai sho.)

all that said, I do think toph is also heavily involved in this group dynamic, albeit not romantically, but she’s obviously sokka’s best friend and also very important to mai, so she kind of just hangs around because sokka, mai, and toph are also just their own little trio. but when it is just the four of them, it is truly the four scariest nonbenders in the world participating in this vaguely polyamorous dyke squad telling the most fucked up jokes you have ever heard in your life and laughing their asses off, and they are all gorgeous gorgeous girls who seem highly threatening to anyone on the outside looking in, but are actually very silly and goofy and and dedicate way too much of their time to playing board games. beautiful dynamic I think

(also, just as a sidenote for anyone wondering about whether they’re lesbians or what, that reddit post about being “gay both ways” is sokka’s gender. to me)

If not Mai, do you have any strong feelings about Ty Lee and interesting relationships for her?

i think mai is really just perfect for ty lee in so many ways, but i do also ship ty lee with suki, which is something i’ve discussed quite a bit (although i should draw them more, they’re so fun to draw). mai and suki are both very honest and blunt and funny which is something ty lee needs in a gf. but i do also really love her relationship with azula, like it’s obviously not remotely healthy but it’s very fascinating, this precarious dance wherein it’s fully unclear who leading and who is following. ty lee is queen of toxic situationships, leading people on, and breaking hearts with an adorable dimpled smile (and sometimes outright physical violence). ive also talked about how her dynamic with sokka would be really fascinating, and aang too probably (especially if you subscribe to the idea of her as a descendant of air nomads). but i really think that every ty lee is an “interesting relationship” simply because she is so insane.

a great thing about the aang & ty lee friendship potential postwar is that they are very similar in many ways (terrifyingly powerful but easily underestimated due to their adorable smiles and big brown eyes, etc) but while aang has a very firm moral code when it comes to doing violence, ty lee seems to have absolutely no morals whatsoever (besides the fact that her chi-blocking only temporarily disables people and doesn’t kill) and will just do whatever is in her best interest—but we also know that if she cares about someone enough, she will sacrifice her own safety/self-preservation for their sake (see: the boiling rock). so once she joins the kyoshi warriors bc she thinks they’re cool and hot, and she and aang become friends bc she likes his vibe, they can basically just steer her in the direction of Performing Good Deeds by being like “hey ty lee come help us restore this air temple <3” or “let’s bring food to hungry people together!!!!” and she’s like “okay!!!! <3” because she’s with her friends and it’s a fun way to spend a saturday. she is so incredibly powerful & smart & can do anything she sets her mind to, but that means that her friends have to make sure that they are convincing her to use her powers for good instead of evil because she really doesn’t care either way, as long as she’s having a good time :)

In the Ba Sing Se fight, do you think Sokka was actually dodging Ty-Lee's blows, or was she just going easy on him?

i think it's a bit of both. like, on one hand, sokka was using real martial arts moves there, proving that he has knowledge and skill to counter ty lee's attacks. he learned moves from suki, who as we later see is an equal match for ty lee on the gondola (though i also have a feeling that ty lee was holding back on her there, since actually subduing suki would have meant her plunging to her death in the boiling lake, and actually killing people is not ty lee's m.o.), so it makes perfect sense that he too proves her match in hand to hand combat. but, i also get the sense that ty lee was toying with him here, and drawing out the fight on purpose, for fun. ty lee can be decisive when she needs to be, but she'd always rather see how things play out.

suki and ty lee would be terrifying together and im not just saying that bc they’re both incredibly skilled in combat and would be literally unbeatable as a team. like, yes, that too, but I am specifically referring to the emotional damage they could and would wreak on zuko. yes he is like a little brother to both of them (i know he’s older than they are—I said what I said) but dumping mai in a letter was NOT OK!!! and this combination of fierce protectiveness over mai, ty lee’s manipulation skills, suki’s love of mischief & trickery, and their combined knowledge of zuko’s pysche leads them to easily concoct the most devastating scheme known to man. despite the fact that this little prank of theirs is ultimately very low effort, the effects are overwhelming. all they have to do is suggest to zuko that mai and sokka might be dating on the dl, have u noticed how close they are lately? hmm yeah. they’re kinda cute together lol. and he spirals almost immediately.

the first 24 hours he actually holds it together pretty well. it’s not like this information is in any way shape or form pertinent to his life. of course they wouldn’t tell him, why would they bother? it’s probably just a baseless rumor anyway. not that it would bother him if it were true. because it wouldn’t. oh god are they gonna get married??? is he gonna have to give a speech at their wedding???? would it be inappropriate to mention the boiling rock in a wedding speech????? what if they don’t even want him to give a speech???? that’s ridiculous he’s great at speeches!!! ......what if he’s really bad at speeches but no one had the heart to tell him??? what other secrets are people keeping from him because they suspect he is simply too faint of heart to handle it?? does uncle secretly hate him??? do the turtleducks???? is aang toph’s real dad?????? who can say!!!

upon finding zuko facedown on the floor muttering to himself about how he’s great at giving speeches and he doesn’t even need uncle anyway, suki and ty lee agree they should probably pick a harder challenge for their next target.

pai sho: ty lee wins. every single time. it’s infuriating. 

who can eat more bean curd puffs in 20 seconds: suki, by a landslide. sokka reenters the room and notices all his snacks are suddenly gone, assumes it was momo like last time, and then notices that the real culprit has tofu in her eyebrows.... 

who can jump off a wall faster: they get toph to measure when they hit the ground, and suki lands a fraction of a millisecond before ty lee does. she gloats about it for two days 

uno: suki has no remorse when it comes to draw 4′s 

who can touch the insides of her elbows together: well that one’s just not fair, because ty lee’s double jointed 

who can better read sokka’s indecipherable handwriting: suki. she’s just had more practice 

who can actually get away with lying to toph: ty lee, and ty lee only

who can pick up more girls at the lesbian bar: mai. and she wasn’t even trying

reading proust: ty lee actively enjoys it. suki gives up after two pages

who can do aang’s makeup better: they pester him about it, but he refuses to claim a winner, since he thinks they both made him look beautiful
