The Secret to a Luxuriously Dark Home? It’s the Details
Monochromatic palette aside, this family home, designed by Summerhaus D’zign, also features real wood and stone finishes as well as a 4m high ceiling.
Ask Larry Lim what’s the most challenging part of designing a home with a consistent look throughout, and he’ll tell you that it’s keeping things interesting.
Tumblr media
                                  Interior Firm: Summerhaus D’zign
Says the co-founder of local design firm Summerhaus D’zign about his team’s work on this downtown family home at The Equatorial: “The dark colours are certainly dramatic, but we were concerned about the whole feel being too unexciting, too simple, because the same elements were used throughout.”
These concerns were, however, put to rest by introducing a variety of richly subtle features into the space, giving it a classy look that’s straight out of a luxury magazine. To find out more about this makeover, we caught up with Larry to ask about what took place behind the scenes.
About the design brief
Larry (L): For the owners, what they wanted most was an element of authenticity; so we’re talking about real, natural materials, things like stone and wood, which would give their home a cosy, contemporary look. For instance, they chose to clad their cabinets and displays with real wood veneer, instead of using laminates.
Practicality-wise, they requested to have plenty of efficient, but stylish storage solutions because there are 6 other people living in the house. And if I recall correctly, there’s a cat too!
Tumblr media
On the creative process
L: I must say that the discussions that we had with the owners were quite interesting, and mostly because it was a journey of discovery for them.
When the owners first approached us, they expressed a preference for all-white, minimalist interiors, but after some discussion, we found out that what they really wanted was something that leaned closer to subtle opulence.
We only came to realise this after one of them showed us pictures of several hotels and public spaces featuring strong modern-contemporary elements like dark colours and polished surfaces.
Tumblr media
About new features
L: At the start of the renovation, one of the things that the owners requested was for a loft structure to be constructed in the living room, which has a ceiling height of approximately 4 meters.
However, we dissuaded them from going ahead with this plan as the loft’s platform would end up concealing the full height of their living room.
Tumblr media
Instead, we suggested building in tall shelves (for a collection of vintage whiskeys) – this would help to keep the original look and feel of the space intact while satisfying the owners’ need for storage.
Also, if you were to take a closer look, each of the shelf units are partitioned by wood strips and backed by mirrors, which add depth, detail, and a touch of class to the entire structure. It’s for the same reason that we installed full-height mirrors along the front of the living room.
Tumblr media
Another key highlight of the communal space is the dining table. It’s about 3.2 meters long and can seat the entire family; we had it carved out from a slab of Dekton, which is an ultra-compact quartz surface from Cosentino.
Tumblr media
There are a total of three bathrooms in the house – two en suites and a common toilet – which we decorated in the same fashion using white and black marble.
In addition to that, we also used marble to build bespoke shelves in the bathroom instead of using the standard variety of wood cabinets. We did it by cladding concrete slabs of a suitable size in marble before mounting them into position.
Tumblr media
There was more work was done in the master bathroom because the owners wanted to a pair of double-leaf doors, similar to those in a hotel that they had been to. As part of the change, the entrance was also shifted to face the wardrobe to give it the feel of a walk-in space.
Tumblr media
Last but not least is the kitchen, which offers a good view of the forested area around.
If you notice, the kitchen has a different aesthetic from the other spaces, and that’s because the female homeowner wanted to put her own spin on it. The colours in this space are mostly gentle neutrals, so they wouldn’t end up clashing with the rest of the house visually.
Tumblr media
On renovation challenges
L: We didn’t encounter any technical challenges or obstacles during the renovation process, but we were concerned about the overall look. We were afraid that using the same materials, such as veneers and marble, would end up making the house look too boring, but it turned out to be more seamless and unique than monotonous.
Tumblr media
To sum up
L: The final result turned out better than we expected, that’s for sure. What the owners and us really like is the grandiose sense of space that the interior has. Stepping indoors and seeing a 4m tall ceiling as well as equally tall features really drives in the point about how much vertical room there is in here.

A year ago today I met Anna for the first time and I cried uncontrollably (Thank you, that was super *awkward*). Not because I was sad, but it was the realization that I was actually here, in Disney World. That for the first time in forever, I changed my lonely world and I wasn't sad anymore. Yesterday we realized we were synchronized and that we both love chocolate ice cream and we laughed together. #DreamAlongWithBrooke #Jinx #JinxAgain #LowKeyAnnasBiggestFan #Epcot #MagicKingdom #Anniversary #PrincessFairytaleHall #Norway #SummerHaus (at Epcot Norway)

Have you met Anna and Elsa at Disneyland?
I’ve seen them in parades and shows numerous times but I never actually went to a meet and greet to chat with them! Mainly because in France, the meet and greet thing doesn’t really exist as the face characters actors don’t always speak French and/or have the rule to not spend more than 1 minute talking with guest so that the queue moves faster. (It’s truly a shame when we think about it; note it down Disnerds if you plan to go to Disneyland Paris!)
Then when I went to Disney World with a friend I suddenly became super shy to go in the summerhaus and talk with them?!??!! I’m really talkative with other actors and cast members in the park but suddenly I felt really awkward about it. Not in a ‘oh they are fake anyway’ way but exactly the opposite: i didn’t want to “disturb” them! Weird. 4th wall break i guess.
(Gosh that was a long answer thanks for coming to my TED talk lol)

Hey! I'm a character attendant at wdw and I bought a bag of your Kristanna Disney day art in December off society6 and I use it as my work bag. I was working in the summerhaus and an Anna performer went crazy over it and I helped her find your s6 page :) so I'm pretty sure an Anna performer bought that piece of art on something from ya
oh my gooooooodit still makes me so unreasonably giddy that people are still buying stuff with that piece. I’m so happy~I hope you like the bag, and i hope this performer likes whatever she buys.Thank you to both of you

Under 60 sqm: Tiny Homes That Prove Small Space Living Works
It’s easier than it seems – these useful ideas and tweaks from small condominiums and HDB flats will show you how to live big in a small home.
If there’s one thing that tiny homes prove, it’s that restrictions do indeed breed creativity – from swivel TV consoles to nifty handbag hiding spots (guess where?) there’s no shortage of clever inspiration tucked away in these under-60 sqm apartments. So keep scrolling, and who knows, you might just discover some small but mighty ideas for your next renovation.
Tumblr media
1. Rotating TV consoles, pull-out tables as space-savers
It isn’t hard to see why modular fixtures are welcome in compact studio apartments and smaller HDB flats. Other than providing essential functionality, these flexible additions also ensure that you’ll get all the space you need, when you need it.
Tumblr media
                                           Interior Firm: ARK-hitecture
For instance, in this cozy, contemporary condominium apartment at Parc Rosewood, a rotatable TV console serves as both space-saver and shared entertainment station between the living room, dining area and bedroom. Meanwhile, a ‘shrinkable’ dining table makes it possible to have meals comfortably even in a small setup.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. A foyer… dining area?
Mixed-use spaces aren’t exactly a new ‘small home’ idea, you’ve probably seen study rooms that double as guest bedrooms as well as bed-and-bath combos, but what about a foyer-kitchen?
Tumblr media
                                       Interior Firm: DISTINCTidENTITY
When walls (or other barriers) are removed to create open, light-filled spaces, it’s almost inevitable that the lines between once-separate zones are blurred. To solve this, contrasting flooring were used to once again delineate the thresholds between the different spaces of this chic bachelor’s pad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Create long stretches of space
It doesn’t take an expert to tell you that long stretches of space are effective in creating the illusion of a larger home.
Tumblr media
                                               Interior Firm: i Chapter
If you have a lengthy, but narrow home (like this one), maximise it by arranging your furniture, appliances and fixtures in single file, tucked against the nearest wall behind them. This way, you get to open up an entire corridor, giving your home a more spacious feel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Having a secret platform bed niche for your handbag and belongings helps too!
4. Shelves aren’t the only in-wall storage option
No, the highlight of this handsome condominium home isn’t its loft corner. Instead, you’ll want to put your attention on the variety of creative in-wall storage solutions that Escapade Studio came up with.
Tumblr media
                                         Interior Firm: Escapade Studios
Take for instance, the dining area which can be neatly ‘packed’ away into the TV console. Equally impressive is the master bedroom’s feature wall that conceals a handbag storage nook behind its timber façade.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Build combined structures
Like mixed-use spaces, combining your fixtures and build-ins into a single structure is one way that you can try to save space in a small home.
Tumblr media
                                            Interior Firm: Weiken.com
How this deep-hued 33 sqm abode does it is by integrating wine shelves and display cases into the base of a loft bed’s staircase, which also incorporates a bay window seat as a landing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Replace your walls with see-through doors…
See-through doors are great for small homes because they provide the best of both worlds. If you wish to keep a room shut off, but would still like to have light flowing into your home, these transparent barriers are just what you need.
Tumblr media
                                          Interior Firm: Fuse Concept
In some cases, like for this bohemian chic apartment, replacing your walls with sliding doors also comes with the extra perk of creating extra corridor space (enough to fit a dining area).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. … Or do away with barriers completely
As proven by many a home, embracing open-concept spaces is often the answer to cramped areas. After all, there’s nothing quite like removing a few walls if you wish to transform a closed-off room into a wide, open one.
Tumblr media
                                                   Interior Firm: Habit
That’s said, in some cases, this solution is entirely out of the question because there are simply no walls to begin with. Here, in this cosy condo apartment, an open bedroom erases the boundaries between night and day by taking the place of a living room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. Maximise both the inside and outside
Short on both living room and bedroom space? Here’s a neat trick that you can do with just a single wall.
Tumblr media
                                       Interior Firm: Summerhaus D’zign
By having your TV and dresser placed on opposite sides of the same structure, like in this modern-luxe condominium flat, you get to prevent precious space from being wasted while ensuring good flow (read: sufficient walkway space) in both zones.

How to have Confidence in Your Own Interior Design Style
Tumblr media
A lot of people wonder about what goes into the making of a successful interior designer. After all, they establish path-breaking design trends, experiment with materials and colors, and blend tradition and individuality with consummate ease. However, you need not be a professional to set your own interior design trends and be confident about them. Here is how you can be confident about your own interior design style.
Let your surroundings inspire you
Nothing is ever created by secluding oneself or avoiding all external influences. In fact, one should start deriving inspiration from their surroundings. Look out for illustrations and photographs in sync with your style and put them up as your desktop wallpapers and posters for your workspace and so on. Study your sources of inspiration to understand unifying themes and elements. Cull out what you don't like, and gradually introduce these individual elements into your own space.
Take your time to develop your style
Developing confidence in your own style takes time. Let the learning process take its natural course, since it will also help you develop good taste. If possible, acquaint yourself with someone who is a professional at interior design, and watch them go about their job. Understanding that you need time to develop will also take undue pressure off you. Start with one thing at a time, and avoid going large-scale.
Infuse elements from personal life
Incorporating elements from your personal life can be a great idea. Go through your favorite objects in your house, including keepsakes, books, bowls, photographs, pebbles, or works of art. Try to notice motifs common to your personal belongings and how they can be introduced to your style of interior design. It could be food, travel, animals, or even films. Interior designers commonly use things that clients collect to determine their style.
Blend the functional with the beautiful
While looking at pictures of interiors for inspiration, don't forget to form your own responses to them. Ask yourself if you would like to live in, or be comfortable in such a space. If not, the style is not functional. Thinking only about the aesthetic and foregoing the practical can mount needless pressure on you to design your space a certain way.
Observe other spaces
Places like malls, restaurants, offices and the like, are usually professionally designed. If you want to develop a sense of interior design, start observing these spaces more deeply. Notice furniture placement, the use of color and texture, and the degree to which they are executed. Notice how different elements used together can create a certain ambience.
Face and conquer your phobias
For a lot of people, developing confidence in their own interior design style is more about conquering fear of failure. However, the only way to do that is to face it. If you are nervous about the use of color, start out by choosing moderate, pleasant colors that you like. You could also invest in colorful elements like candles, flowers, or other accessories and test it out. If you're afraid that white cannot be used successfully in a family home, there's a way around that too. Instead of painting your walls white, go for painted white floors that can be mopped up, or get white laminate tables.

Tips on How to Hang Pictures at Home
Tumblr media
Whether its photo frames or display pictures for adorning your walls, doing them justice would mean knowing exactly how to hang them. Whereas displaying precious artwork beautifully could seem like a major undertaking for most, it is actually a very simple task. Here are some guidelines your interior design professionals will suggest.
Choosing the right kind of artwork
There are no hard and fast rules here. Even though you might have that special liking for colonial art, you can still include them in your contemporary setup! In fact, the contrast will be quite magnificent. Simply go for artworks you would love living with.
Be Brutal about downsizing
If you already have a stock of artwork to display, it is important to be brutal when you downsize. Some may have lost their charm with time, some may have become irrelevant. These need to be done away with. There is no point in adding to the clutter when you plan your gallery wall. Zero on the best among your collection that you wish to display.
Arrange them first
Consider arranging your pictures on the floor first before getting them on the wall. Consider experimenting with different sizes, shapes and dimensions. Choose a central focal point for your artwork and arrange the other pieces around it. Make sure you choose a scheme that complements the dimensions of the room. Elaborate arrangements work just fine with larger rooms whereas sleeker spaces will require compact designs for the right appeal.
Get the height right
Whereas the height you choose will depend on the pattern you have chosen for arranging your frames, it is never advisable to hang pictures too high on the wall. The ideal height could be between 155 to about 160cms from the ground. The idea is, you should not be looking up or down at them. It should be on the same level as your eye contact when you are seated.
Choose your spaces judiciously
Bedrooms are meant for unwinding and relaxation. Therefore, ideally, you should be using pastel colored, pretty images for adorning these spaces. Dining rooms can be used for more serious kind of pictures. Artworks in the hallway are likely to receive least focus; therefore, simple prints can be used for adorning the walls. Focus areas like the space above the fireplace mantle should be reserved for something special like a royal oil painting and the likes. Also make sure you keep the factors of proportion and balance in mind. If you are hanging something on top of a chest or the fireplace platform, do not leave too much space between the frame and the top. In case there is space, fill it up with a clock or similar.
Ensure the positioning is right
Whereas using a spirit level will help in positioning your frames symmetrically, trusting your eyes is best. This is a two person job. Ask someone to check the leveling as your fix the pictures.
Ideally, you must ask your interior design specialists to suggest the perfect arrangement for your pictures. You can also seek professional assistance for arranging your artwork perfectly.
