Broken Sails

Prologue: Words we should have never left unsaid

“You want to be a pirate? Seriously?” Shakes said as he swished his legs in the water back and forth.

He enjoyed the tickly feeling of the soft waves playfully lapping at his feet as he sat on the precariously old structure that the habitants of Milnora called a port. Fact that the boy had always found funny, since no other boats ever came to the place.

Skarra turned to him so quickly, that Shakes feared for a moment that his friend might had broken his neck. Though his concern gave pass to amusement when he looked at the indignant expression plastered on the other boy's face.

“Well, of course! And you should know it better than everybody else on this island!” Skarra proudly replied, puffing out his chest. His friend only watched him in silence as his dark eyes shined with poorly hidden glee.

Since meeting him, the boy hadn't stopped proudly voicing his dream whenever he could. It was more than expected for him to do so at any given opportunity, so it wouldn’t come off as a surprise if the whole island knew it at this point.

Skarra huffed and clasped his hands behind his back before walking closer to him, adopting a proud air about him. The rotten planks creaked and moaned under his small weight. “ I really don't understand why it's so difficult for you to believe.” He commented while shaking his shaven head.

Shakes hummed thoughtfully. “Let's see…”, he raised a hand and started to count with his fingers. “You don't know how to drive a boat, you don't know how a compass works— let alone seen one in your life. — you've never used a sword or a gun, the older kids always win when you ‘spar’, you've never met a pirate—

“Alright, alright, I think that's enough—”

“… And you don't even know how to swim!” finished Shakes.

Skarra sighed in defeat and plopped down next to his friend, deciding to not argue any further. “Yeah. Even though you spent all summer trying to teach me. Thanks for helping me, anyways.”

“Don’t even mention it.”

And with that, the two boys fell into a comfortable silence.

The sun was only starting to set, bathing everything its rays touched in a gentle rose-gold. The waves twinkled like little colorful stars moving around in an endless dance as old as time. It was an spectacle like no other and, as always, it seemed to wrap Shakes in a magical trance. The azure depths called to him — no — sang for him as they'd done countless times before, only each time they grew stronger, more eager, more desperate.

And Shakes heard the call, but didn't make any move to follow it.

Instead, he nervously licked his lips, cringing slightly at their chapped texture. From the corner of his eye, he casted a quick glance at his best friend (But could Shakes really call Skarra a friend with the way he couldn't seem to stop thinking about him and his eyes and his hands and his voice?).

Shakes swallowed, trying to push down the bile that had raised to his throat. He palmed his clammy palms on the dusty pants he wore, and sighed.

It was now or never.

“It's just… I have something to tell you.”

“Oh! I have something to tell you, too!”

Shakes tilted his head to the side. “…Oh? You…do?”

Skarra nodded. “Yeah! But you go first.”

“Oh! Uh, don't worry, you can go first.” Shakes quickly stammered, grateful to not be the center of attention anymore.

As the anxiousness left, curiosity filled his mind, for what could be so important that the other boy ‘s face had morphed into such an uncharacteristic expression?. Skarra was frowning deeply; his lips were set into a thin, straight line as his eyes bored into his.

Shakes sucked in a sharp breath as a thought came popped up in his mind.

Could he…?

Shakes was brought out of his thoughts by his friend's voice. “I mean, it's more of a question.” Skarra mumbled thoughtfully, completely unaware of the way the other boy was holding his breath while leaning forward as slowly as he could.

“It doesn't matter, go on…” Shakes softly spurred him on, now breathing in and out to slow down the pounding of his heart, fearful that Skarra might’ve been able to hear it.

“Do you…”, Skarra started, making Shakes suck in a sharp breath.” Do you want to sail with me?”

“…Huh?”

Sharra scratched his head. “Well, I figured that sailing alone would be pretty hard, so why not sail with my best friend on the world?” The boy finished, turning to Shakes with a toothy smile on his face.

Shakes didn't have to think twice. “Yes… Yes! I want to sail with you.”

Skarra laughed and his smile stretched even more, the setting Sun now haloing his figure. “Ha-ha, then let's sail together!”  he said, pumping up a fist in the air.

His good energy was contagious, but a question still nagged at Shakes. “But we don't have a boat?”

“Oh, you're right.” Skarra said as he brought his fist down and a frown settled on his face. His humor change didn't last for too long, for a few seconds of silence later he beamed. “We'll make a boat, and then we'll sail together!”

Shakes could only shake his head and sigh as he smiled fondly at his friend, who had now started to talk about all the things their boat would have and the places they would visit once they finished building it.

Shakes had no doubts that the sea had been there for a long while, and that it would stay there for a while more. There would always be more tomorrows, and they would bring more fun, sunny days to spend with Skarra.

A nice, cool breeze blew over his face, bringing with it a faint melody from the sea. Shakes smiled back at his friend, hoping to convey everything he wanted to tell him in that single gesture.

Yeah. As long as he and Skarra where together, everything would be fine.

hihihi! I hope you enjoyed this little prologue! This fic is loosely based on @cryingstrika 's sharra mermaid au drawings and it's been on the works for a while. I'm not sure how many chapters it's going to have and updates may be slow and the characters may be a bit (or veryxd) ooc

Break-up Headcanons:

El Matador:

"Noo how could you do this to mee?!"

Gonna say this right off the bat wheter or not his s/o showed signs of wanting to split beforehand is irrelevant because he simply wouldn't notice, being his usual self the less savoury parts of the relationship are lost to him and he brushes any arguments under the rug before making sure the problems that led to them in the first place are properly solved.

It's not that he dosen't care or dosen't take his s/o seriously it's just that his ego won't let him belive that a relationship with him in it could ever have flaws, so expect some disbelif and attempts at brushing the whole ordeal away might even try to play it off as a joke, his inability to handle rejection really comes through.

The first few months of the break-up are quite painfull, he's the type to try to win them back with gifts and grand gestures before realising it's either useless or he's making himself look pathetic also because s/o is Nanny Garcia level importanat to him he never thought he'd lose them so he's unequiped to handle the loss.

The team will most likely suffer greatly as he sulks both on and off the pitch the other guys might have to drag him away from interwievs so he dosen't bad mouth s/o and his performance will most likely see a short-lived dip. He's also not the type to have good faith in his heart for his past s/o/s/os, he most definiatly has love for them but staying friends with them or getting back togeather at a later date is not in the cards.

Shakes:

"Oh well i understand."

Similar to El Matador he'll try to act surprised by the initial question he's more observant yes but Skarra's betrayal has and his dad's droppibg off the face of the earth left him doubting any and all relationship he has. He can't ever shake off the feeling that he's the fool, the one who loves too much so he tries his best to push down the constant nagging of his brain.

He's just paranoid they just had a bad day, they weren't scowling it was the lighting, they aren't acting cold or distant they won't leave him like Skarra (or Dad) they aren't like that. He can't just call Spenza Pİ into his relationship, it's rude to over-step (nevermind that he's done that before in diffrent circumsnatces he's just scared of the inevitable truth.).

S/o won't see any if thag fear though just a nod and that he hoped they can stay friends beyond this, he tries not to go cold turkey on the relationship but the check-ins and the how-you-doins dry up soon enough.

Tries his best to not let the team know (three whole people have left him what does that say about him?) but when they inevitably find out he just says he'll get through it he always does and get through it he does but not without needing some support from the guys and Spenza who most likely moves in after you leave.

Skarra:

"Funny one, really."

Straight up laughs, who'd be stupid enough to leave a guy like him? Soccer star top of his game, best player İ.U has seen in ages of course he's noticed the signs who do you think he is? He just thought you were better at controllibg your emotions he didn't think you were the type to make stupid little decisions like this.

Fucking terrified, he should've known this would happen again, he should've known better, should've kept s/o at an arms distance at all times (provided we're thinking of a scenario where he didn't which isnt very likely imo) he should've never let anyone close enough to hurt him again.

Will try to brush it off and when that dosen't work he'll blow up and start a fight, never forgets the fear and anger so any good memory that s/o might hold on to he burns in his memory (or literally watch s/o watch your back).

His game improves for a bit though which is good for İ.U albeit a bit bad for Dingaan and the rest of the S.L who get the nasty end of his sharp tounge and bad temper, will play more agresively and foul more often i can tottaly see a plotline of Vince sneaking s/o or somone who likes look them of the front rows of The Vice jus to get a more 'organic preformance'. Might try to spread nasty rumors about the s/o or any number or malicous attempts at revenge if s/o has a fav team other than İ.U will try and foul them more badly/often.

Ja Nein:

"...well that's, that."

Knew it was coming before you did, horribly good at observation and reading people the lip-biting and the exaparrated sighs aren't lost on him, he knows too much about how people work to not know what they mean and pried himself too much on his intelligence to ignore them so he'll approach the situation proffsinaly it might even be painfull to see how dry he is about it.

His confidence takes a great blow though, his insecuritys are fed quite well by this and it will most likely show in his game Von Pushup might sub him for a few games and pull some shit to make him 'man-up'.

The rest of İron Tank respect him enough to not meddle most of the time this might not be one of those times, he probably won't make any attempts at revenge himself (unless he does check your playlist s/o, is the back door locked? Do they have the funds to skil town for a while if need be??).

Will act comfortable around his ex-s/o if they're still in the same friend group but don't be surprised if they suddenly go a bit cold on them or start inviting them out less and less, he would try his best not to date in the team but if s/o is by chance an Iron Tanker than well that team can be petty as all hell.

Riano:

"Well than what are you doing here?"

The few days before the break-up are tense like cut it with a knife kind of tense, he knows it's coming and he isn't the type of guy to beg them to stay, he'd rather hold it agaisnt them that they haven't yet, he's quite immature about the whole thing.

Won't bad mouth his s/o to the public or his friends but it'll take a while for his disdain for them to subside i see him as the sort of gut to eventually get over the shame of being the stupid one of course no one could keep up with him that long what was he thinking?

Will always have a bit of hate for s/o though and will hold onto it without realizing might try to serial date afterwards to 'get the bad taste off his tounge' will have a tiny glimmer of love in his heart for them despite it will never show but it's important that it's there i guess.

Won't let it affect his game at all and won't let his team know he likes to keep private matters out of his work life (the team are painfully aware of the break-up but don't bring it up in, he once snapped and went for his corach and once the ref, s/o is banned from the stadium for life).

North Shaw:

"Tottaly cool dude, you up for tomorrow doe, right?"

Honsetly sort of saw it coming he's not the long term relationship sort of guy, his life is made up of high highs and short lived lows he dosen't like to sit in discomfort not even to like reflect on the situation or think things through unless he's forced to.

To him it's entierly expected and accepted, is woeufully unaware of the emotinaly turmoil that s/o might have gone thourgh, to him it's just an end to the relationship not to their friendship. Will still invite them to hang out ,even if it's just them, and keep them updated on his life expecting to be updated on theirs as well might even introduce you to his new 'bae' since their friends now.

İf s/o dosen't handle his way too cool approach to the situation and try to block him off or cut him out of their life than he might react badly, he'll think it's a mistake or a joke at first but when explained he'll just tell them that's silly so what if they didn't work out romantically they were having a blast before that, no need to throw that away dude!

The team will tottaly side with s/o on this one with a few expections unless they don't like them, if it's a nasty break-up than s/o and North will still stay on talking/jabbing insults at eachother terms who knows maybe they'll score Liquido with that but i wouldn't bet on a relationship built on that.

Dooma:

"Oh so you've just upped and fucking deci-"

Call a fucking ambulance, no no forget that arrange your own funureal it'd save him the trouble. In all serousness though yeah wheter or not he saw it coming he's not taking it well by principal he dosen't date people phisically weaker than him and i'd love to think that he wouldn't pick an actuall fight over it but he did shove a ref's whistle up his nose and ate a red card on natinaly televison.

Honsetly s/o's best bet is to have the convo and book it outta there hope they packed their belongins beforehand or he'll most likely burn them if you leave shampoo, perfume etc. At his place he'll most likely put bleach in it he isn't the type for detailed well thought out revenge but he'll do his best in small little gestures like the middle finger in the midst of a match for example.

After a while he'll be over it and if he's still in contact with s/o he'll talk about his 'little temper tantrum' like a fond little memory if s/o dosen't play along he'll just brush off their concern or valid criticsm with an air of superiority he handles break-ups well or you wouldn't be here would you.

The team will most likely call s/o and ask you to come sort things out with him as their the ones paying for your little 'lover's quarrel' his game will improve somewhat during this time but so will his tendency to batter up anyone on the pitch.

• i think this is canon, but she is a gifted child in the family. she was in top 5 of the class and popular as hell,

• she is that mf of friend group that will always bring up snacks and drinks with yourself,

• her love language is making edits of funny/embarrassing photos of others with music that totally don't match vibe with anything included in edit,

• her tiktok and instagram likes are full of some people talking gibberish and cringe compilations, so if u want to get her joke you at least need to know lore of all of this people and incidents that happened x years ago,

• when we talking about memes, she loves absurdism humor, so when shakes send something to her that he thinks is funny, her face is like: 😐 how are we even related?,

• i also think she is reading the most surreal literature (franz kafka is her beloved),

• skarra pierced her ears for the first time,

• she is very loyal,

• her notes are full of stickers, adhesive gems and drawings. some of things are even written in glitter gel pen,

• her channel is pretty much all things mixed up. there is commentary, there is gaming, there is some art projects and video blogs, everybody can find something for themselfves,

SEASON 1:

• for me, season 1 starts at the time when shakes is 20 years old, so by this logic nandi is 17,

• there is no physical apperance of her, she is just mentioned by (mainly) shakes.

SEASON 2:

• at the beginning of the season her and shakes are talking about the fact that nandi moved to college (they have their little family bonding time),

• in s2e5 (el sound of silencio) spenz calls her to help him and fran, but she just listened to all of this shit and was like: ok bro 🧍🏾‍♀️*disconnects*,

• in s2e13 she tracked down skarra before this big "all stars vs supa strikas match" and interviewed him about this fucked up rivarly that him and shakes have (she saw both of them in tv last night), and why they even decided to have a bet of the pitch where they had great time together in past (like hell, nandi knew that this friendship was homoerotic, holy shit). ofc nandi "as annoying as the little shit she was" (skarra's words, not mine), she didn't take any type of crap from him about this whole situation. after this, she called shakes out on his stupid ass actions, in his apartament, and just left him with: you both are total blockheads. and shakes was like: both? who is both? wtf.

SEASON 3

• in season 3 nandi and shakes have this conversation about what nandi meant, when she literally lit into him in his own apartament before super league final. to which nandi,, replied with: ahh yeah. but this doesn't matter. at least this debt of yours and skarra's was dissolved :D. after, they had honest conversation and disscus about childhood and how this can't be put before good of the team (nandi wanted to argue with this, but then she quickly give up. all the stress that the shakes' finale cost her was enough for her),

• at this season we see more of nandi as a future filmmaker, because she trolls everyone on twitter with uploading this type of videos like fake interviews with celebrities (and with some footballers ;)),

• in college, she met woman from completely other school (remember this. i probably make headcanons for this semi canon character so wink wink) and became friends with her,

SEASONS 4-7:

• all of her story arcs focus on her career and school and on a few other events that will be described by me as i write about other women from strikas universe.

relationships with (disclaimer: i do not include her relarionship with shakes and their mom, bc it was pretty well managed in rookie season. i will probably make another post but about whole mokena's family dynamic):

• skarra: writers rotally fucked up. WASTED POTENTIAL.

their relationship definitely started as: you are my brother's (boy)friend/you are shakes' sister. and then, they became partners in crimes. when shakes, skarra and nandi went to school nandi always pulled out a card titled: don't talk to me like that, or i'm gonna call my brother and my brother's best friend. in othet occasions, skarra went to nandi and asked some stupid questions like: ey, nandi you have ruler to lend 🧍‍♂️?? (,,yo, nandi you want some hotdogs?", ,,nandi, we are going to shopping mall", ,,hey, nandi you have some time to hide a body----?"). why writers of rookie season acted like nandi wouldn't care that much about skarra, like he literally used to call nandi's mom 'auntie' wtf wtf wtf.

• klaus: YOU CAN'T TELL ME HE WOULDN'T BE HER FAV OUT OF SHAKES' TEAMMATES. nandi and klaus definitely have long conversations about shows that they watched, about ships, about premieres. they are just two little nerds with heads full of ideas <33333

• mara: me and @strudelbbg once talked about mara and nandi's possible relation and we decided that mara, when nandi was younger, probably carried her on her back and stuff. tldr mara sees nandi as "little sis 💞💞💞💞",

• i think she would wear these "crazy" make-ups like:

Sadness

In the ocean, underwater, the merman sat on a rock, looking up, surrounded by multiple coloured corals, missing his love. From behind an old lady comes, keeping a hand on the young mermaid's shoulder, with a smile on her face.

"Hey son, come, I have made your favourite dish." "No." said the merman with an emotionless face. "I don't want to eat, I'm not hungry." he said with no light in his eyes. "Shakes, you didn't eat your breakfast, nor the lunch, atleast eat your dinner." said the mother with some hope that her son will come and eat. "No ma, I don't feel like eating. I will eat later." said the merman, facing his mother with a sweet, but a fake smile on his face. "So atleast come inside. You've been out for too long..." said the mother, who was now worried. "I will come later. You go." said the young merman, facing the other way.

The smile on his face faded away, with him again looking up. His mother goes inside, with a sad face, which was noticed by her 14 year old daughter.

"He said no, didn't he?" said the daughter with a little anger on her face. "Yes." said the mother, going inside the bedroom to sleep. She stopped, facing back to her daughter. "Do you have any idea what has happened to him?" The girl got lost into her thoughts, then answered, "One week ago, I found him near the shore." the little mermaid said, continuing to think the next. "The shore?" said the mother mermaid with doubt. "What was he doing there?" said the mother, raising an eyebrow. "I don't know, but he was doing something there, and before someone saw him, I called him back, by which he came but he was sad..." "Was someone there with him?" came a quick question from the mother. "No, no one was there." came the answer.

Shakes entered, disappointed.

"So you think I am so careless that I will let a human see me, huh?" he said. "No no son! I didn't meant that..." "But it looked like you meant it." said shakes, going into his room and closing the door. 'And you are correct.' thought Shakes.

The merman layed on his bed, and opened the drawer beside the bed, which revealed a small box, made with very strong, blue-green corals. He took that box and opened it, inside of which there was an earing, the only thing which made him smile a little. He took out the earing.

'I miss you.' thought the merman. 'I miss you so much, skarra...' he thought while keeping the box inside the drawer, and thinking that only, he slept, into dreams of him with his human lover...
