My Favorite Songs I Discovered in 2019
With the end of the year in just a day or two, I thought I’d look back like I have throughout the last few years.
Click here for my 2017 list and here for my 2018 list!
For End of 2016 by Windy & Carl (Disquiet Vol 1, 2017)
This is the same album from which I found “In the Shape of Longing”, a favorite of mine from two years ago when the album was released. Unfortunately I didn’t really pay any mind to the rest of the album and was only focused on Hammock’s song since that was the only group I was familiar with. This year, I decided to listen to more of the album and picked out two more favorites, For End of 2016 being one of them.
In a similar vain to In The Shape of Longing, this song fills me with an astounding peace and serenity. That was something I especially needed to cope with the biggest anxiety attack I’ve had in years. I put this song, along with the other two from the album, on a playlist and listened to it on repeat on long car rides or in the early morning as a lovely way to put myself in a contemplative state of mind.
Sicilian Crest by The Mountain Goats (In League with Dragons, 2019)
To no one’s surprise, The Mountain Goats has another entry on this year’s list! The podcast I Only Listened To The Mountain Goats focused on their newest album, In League With Dragons, this season. Many new favorite songs were introduced to me through this album but my favorite overall is the final song on the album and the first song they introduced; Sicilian Crest.
Despite this year being the first time I’ve heard this song (it came out this year after all) listening to it fills me with an optimistic nostalgia and excitement. It’s another song I enjoy on car rides, but more so for the feeling of adventure if I’m going somewhere new or anticipating a fun day out.
Born to Love You by Elodie Adams (OddWorld: New and Tasty Soundtrack, 2014)
My only first-hand experience with the OddWorld games was when Munch’s Oddysee came out on Xbox and I played a small portion of it as a kid. I’ve since only heard about it or seen videos about it but this year I was especially fascinated by the series (with the buzzing of Soulstorm’s anticipated release) considering the message of the games clashing with the current state of politics and climate change.
I see Abe’s story incredibly inspirational, a reminder that we don’t need to sit silently when all seems lost with the world. I am excitedly looking forward to Soulstorm’s release and would love to play it.
The song featured plays in the end credits of the first game’s remaster. While the remaster received very mixed reviews from the fanbase and many argue the song doesn’t quite fit with the game, it’s still a beautifully done song! I was blown away by the vocals the first time I heard the song!
The Oldest Man in the Room by Yasper/Louk (Build, 2019)
Many of the songs I discovered this year came from listening to live-stream playlists. This song, and the entire Build album, were introduced to me while watching supardanil streams! He has an open Spotify playlist you can add songs to during streams, so many lovely (and sometimes hilarious) songs are added and discoveries are made!
The whole album, and this song especially, are very chill and nostalgic for me. It reminds me a little bit of some of my favorite work by Craig Chaquico, a jazz artist from the early 90s. This music is a modern, quirky spin on a genre that’s always had a special place in my heart.
Nanking Road by Shanghigh Restoration Project (Instrumentals, 2006)
I discovered Shanghai Restoration Project a few years ago, while I was still in high school. They remastered and remixed classic Chinese hits from as late as the 40s, my favorite of which was Rose, Rose, I Love You or Mei Gui, Mei Gui, Wo Ai Ni as it’s written in phonetic Mandarin. The Instrumentals album was another live-stream discovery!
I’ve always had a deep love for Asian music, which has only deepened since taking Mandarin Chinese for almost four years in high school. This song has enough traditional instrumental sounds to remind you of the classics, but enough of a modern twist to keep it refreshing!
Beneath the Mask by Shoji Meguro and Lyn Inaizumi (Persona 5 Soundtrack, 2017)
Persona 5 was a game I only got to play and experience this year, and I’ve relished every single moment of it! It’s a beautiful game with a powerful message about changing the world, with lovable characters and amazing music! My favorite song was a difficult choice between a handful, but Beneath the Mask definitely is the winner here.
The soundtrack for the game is overall jazzy, which I feel is appropriate for the setting of Tokyo. While most of the soundtrack is fast-paced and made to keep you on your toes, Beneath the Mask is a slower paced song made to ease your mind and help wind you down. You mostly hear the song when returning to your “home” for the evening, so it’s fitting the song is calmer to reflect this. I’ve even played the 10 hour loop of the song to help me go to sleep on some very sleepless nights!
One Million Voices by Thomas Bergersen (Humanity, 2019)
I’ve always been a huge fan of Two Steps from Hell, a music group dedicated to making epic soundtrack pieces you can use for projects of all sorts. A friend introduced me to this song made by one of the groups musicians and I loved it immediately!
While probably not exactly a million voices, the song sounds like a lovely mix of different cultures from around the world! A proud representation of what humanity can do when working together, making a wonderful harmonizing sound from things that some people would see as clashing on the surface.
