I know ALL the best ways to spend annual leave!! Seems to be an annual thing to get pain injections and I’m always offered this spot haha. Can we just add a teensy weensy shoutout for schools that aren't actually FULLY closed here? I've been a student teacher on placement all year in the UK and spent the last week and a day keeping very panicky kids calm before I abruptly had to say goodbye. For me my school year is over. I am not necessary, but the colleagues I got to know are.

They are still open despite what the media says. Schools are still open and still providing nurture, meals, support and play for the most vulnerable children of all. Members of the NHS and other key workers can still send their children to school so they know their child is safe while they go back to the frontlines to fight this thing. Families that have been raised as welfare concerns are still getting school support to. Some are organising free school meal passes so EVERY child with free school meals can go to certain local community centres and cafes and the like to get free breakfasts.

The media will tell you schools are closed, but I assure you there are teachers still busting a gut to do what we do best. Support your kids.

Kids who are terrified knowing their grown up is fighting something that has killed so many.

Kids that are vulnerable and find school is their only safe place.

Kids that are below the poverty line or so close to it that their only good meal of the day comes from school.

We don't care about their background. We're still here for the children in need to free up the NHS workers, retail staff and pharmacy assistants and other key workers. So please don't forget the teachers that are still doing their bit, they're all trying to bring some normalcy to children whose lives are anything but normal right now.

i will say that this coronavirus scare has definitely revealed that minimum-wage service workers are absolutely instrumental for society to function… all the hoity-toity business meetings can be cancelled, the NBA can be cancelled, public schools and colleges can be cancelled, government meetings can be cancelled, but the checkout line at the grocery store can’t be cancelled… in a perfect world i’d hope that this was a bellwether for better treatment of workers like me but i know we’ll just continue to get paid min wage with no rewards or thank-yous from the world during this time lolololol
