LUCY IN NEVERLAND
1939-1973
Lucille Ball and her various film and television projects had a loose connection to Peter Pan, the boy who wouldn’t grow up from the J.M. Barrie story that served as a play in 1904, and a novel in 1911. It was later translated into numerous stage and screen adaptations, and inspired many others.
Tumblr media
n 1953′s “Lucy Hires An English Tutor” (ILL S2;E13) pregnant Lucy made Ricky read aloud from the book to test his command of the English language.  Fans will realize that the text Desi reads in the episode has nothing to do with Peter Pan!  The children’s book is just a prop.
Tumblr media
The choice of book may not have been coincidental since the guest star, Hans Conried (playing Mr. Livermore), had just voiced Captain Hook for the Disney animated feature film of Peter Pan to be released just a month later, in February 1953. Conried was a favorite of Lucille’s, having made dozens of guest appearances on her radio show “My Favorite Husband.”
Tumblr media
The ‘Peter Pan Connection’ actually began in 1939, when Lucille Ball starred in the RKO ensemble film Five Came Back. One of the ‘five’ was Wendy Barrie (top with Lucille).  Although born as Marguerite Wendy Jenkins, she took the stage name Wendy Barrie in honor of her Godfather, author J.M. Barrie.  Not coincidentally, Wendy is also the name of the eldest Darling child in “Peter Pan.”
Tumblr media
In a March 8, 1955 episode of “Make Room for Daddy” titled “Peter Pan” Danny’s 7-year-old son Rusty imagines that he can fly like Peter Pan, so his father invites the theater's elderly stagehand to the house to dispel the fantasy and bring Rusty back down to Earth.  The characters lived in New York City and had seen Mary Martin (who did not appear in the episode) in the musical production at the Winter Garden Theatre. In reality, the stage production closed on February 26th to prepare for a live television broadcast on NBC, which aired on March 7, 1955, one night before this episode aired. Danny Thomas sings a song from the stage show at the end of the episode.  Mary Martin was mentioned on “The Lucy Show” in 1964 by guest star Ethel Merman, who was also a big Broadway star like Martin.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy the Gun Moll" (TLS S4;E25) in 1966, Lucille Ball not only played Lucy Carmichael, but a nightclub singer named Rusty Martin who sang “My Heart Belongs To Daddy”. The name 'Rusty Martin’ was probably derived from Lucy’s hair color and the surname of Mary Martin, who introduced the song in the 1938 Broadway musical Leave It to Me. Marilyn Monroe sang it in the 1960 film Let’s Make Love.
Tumblr media
Desilu Studios was the filming location for "Make Room for Daddy”. When it switched from ABC to CBS in 1958, the show did a cross-over episode with “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”.  In return, Lucy and Desi appeared on “Make Room for Daddy.” Coincidentally, Hans Conried, who voiced Captain Hook in the Disney animated version, was a recurring character on “Make Room for Daddy” as Uncle Tonoose.
Tumblr media
In “Return Home from Europe” (ILL S5;E26) aired on May 14, 1956, Ricky comes up with the idea to fly home from Europe instead of taking the steamship, When Ricky wonders whether he’ll make it back in time to perform at the Roxy, Lucy evokes the name Peter Pan, the main character of the J.M. Barrie children’s story of the boy who wouldn’t grow up - but could fly (without help from Pan Am, that is).
Tumblr media
In “Vivian Sues Lucy” (TLS S1;E10), Lucy Carmichael calls Vivian ‘Tinkerbell’ due to her propensity for ringing her bedside bell while (supposedly) incapacitated.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy and the Winter Sports” (TLS S3;E3) aired on October 5, 1964, Lucy Carmichael skis off the roof and lands on Mr. Mooney!  He had just bent over to tie his shoe...
Tumblr media
In 1966′s “Danny Thomas’ The Wonderful World of Burlesque” Lucille Ball performed an aerial ballet. Peter Foy, of the famous Foy Family (who did flying on Broadway for “Peter Pan” and other shows), was brought in to supply rigging and supervise Ball’s flight. Film of the act later became part of their archives.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy Meet Mickey Rooney” (TLS S4;E18) in 1966, Lucy Carmichael claims to have played Captain Hook in “Peter Pan” while in school.
Tumblr media
in “Lucy’s Tenant” (HL S6;E7) in 1973, Lucy Carter sarcastically calls Mary Jane Peter Pan when she brings up Lucy’s age!
Tumblr media
In “The Bow Wow Boutique” (HL S6;E5) aired on October 8, 1973, a Saint Bernard is named Tinkerbell. In “Peter Pan” Tinkerbell is the name of the fairy who is Peter’s closest friend.  Not coincidentally, the Darling children have a St. Bernard dog named Nana, who serves as a pet and a nanny.

“Margetta Hirsch Doyle ’45 was a regular student at William & Mary. Her friends called her ‘Getta’ and she was a Kappa Delta. Doyle kept a diary and wrote about her philosophy quizzes, described how much she enjoyed making Red Cross surgical wrappings and mentioned hours spent spotting airplanes from campus buildings. Doyle was a student during World War II.
During the second World War, William & Mary became a predominantly female campus. While many college-age males fought abroad, women kept up the war effort from Williamsburg. In between their studies and social life, students volunteered with the Student War Council and the American Red Cross. Along with other service work, they, like Doyle, made surgical dressings and spotted airplanes, sometimes in groups and sometimes alone.”
Margetta Hirsch Doyle’s Entries for September, 1943:
SEPTEMBER 1
Mother roused us early since Beth and Kay had to go to work - Lou and I trailed sleepily after them. “Goodbyes” were said and Lou and I with Mother, talked and talked about how to improve KΔ. It was much the same stuff, but with new ideas. We finally managed to dress for a late lunch at the Chinese restaurant in Jamaica and seemed to stuff ourselves. Louise hopped a subway and Mother and I met Herbert (a date - hey! Even if he is just 13) and saw “Hers to Hold” with Deanna Durbin and Joseph Cotton (Ah! Such a man!) and “Crime Doctor” with Warner Baxter at the Valencia. Letter from Danny saying she and Fred have made up. I’m so very glad! Nana came this evening.
SEPTEMBER 2
So lazy! I drooped in bed reading and dreaming till it was well nigh noon and my guilty conscience forced me into a more active life. Once I was up I drooped some more and got out my “old faithful letters” to pore over again. They’re all so “cute” and ego-bolstering. Reading them over I can ignore the intervals between, and toss off the carburetor ones as unimportant. Such nice boys! Dad came out, still feeling rotton - and contemplating the date of his operation. Pat called - gave me a message from Bell that he’s rooting for me to go to Hamilton the 11th. Gee, I’d love it, but Mother and Dad are very uncooperative. I spose they’re right. We invaded Italy’s mainland!!
SEPTEMBER 3
I’m beautified - or rather - attempts were made. At 9:00 a.m. Mother and I were down at Robert’s and my hair was going through the mechanisms necessary for a permanent. I was amazingly through in two hours - it looks fairly all right considering……….. Mother stopped at O.C.D. and then we had lunch at the Fish Grotto, And on home. This evening I went into the city up to Victor Chemical’s office to be shown around by Bugsie. We met Mr. Cotton, her boss and he gave us bourbon to sip. Stirred, we walked crosstown to Toffenetti’s where we met Ev for a crazy dinner. Such fun. Then a walk uptown to Radio City. We saw Cary Grant (Mmm!) in “Mr Lucky.” The stage show had no continuity but the Corps de Ballet act was super.
SEPTEMBER 4
The beginning of the Labor Day weekend. It doesn’t seem possible - my, how the summer has flown by!! Today was completely uneventful and unexciting. I drooped in bed once more till just before time for Daddy to come out. He brought cake as usual. The rest of the afternoon was spent in listening to the Dodgers-Giant's game which the Dodgers won in the seventeenth inning. I pored through old diaries and really laughed at them. Admittedly I’m still rather dramatic and I do exaggerate - but - Gad when I was a Senior at St. Mary’s I really laid in on thick. Such gushing! I really ought to turn over a new leaf. I called Bugsie, Joanie and Pat Brennan.
SEPTEMBER 5
I roused myself from my lethargy to be ready when Aud called for me to go to church and communion. The sermon was quite good: cooperation in order to have World Peace. I came home feeling real holy for a change. This afternoon Bugsie came by to laugh over old diaries with me and talk about things in general. Then she and I walked back to pick up Irene - and so a trek to Tildemann’s for gooey calorie-filled sundaes. Our conscience bothered us but we enjoyed them anyhoo and sat smoking and listening to the juke box discussing the Reader’s Digest statistical conclusion that after the war 7 out of every ten girls will be old maids. Cheerful prospect! Gee things are bad enough without thinking of that.
SEPTEMBER 6
Happy Labor Day! and it was quite happy too, considering - this morning we revived the matter of this next weekend, which had been sort of lying dormant till then and Mom and Dad said I definitely couldn’t go up alone. There was little I could say and I spose I really see their point but I do want to go to Hamilton so very badly. We sit upon the idea of Bugsie’s going with me so I sent a special delivery to Bill and am keeping my fingers crossed till I hear. This evening after Dad left on the spur of the moment Mother & I hopped a bus and went to the Alden to see revivals of Clark Gable & Claudette Colbert's Academy Award Winner “It Happened One Night” and Ronald Colman in “Lost Horizon.” I wonder what my Shangri-La is!
SEPTEMBER 7
I slept late again, getting dressed time to meet Mrs. Brennan and Pats. We went into N.Y. to see “This is the Army” the Technicolor movie version of the army show. It really was terrifically good - the music, acting, vague plot to connect the two wars and color were all grand and I enjoyed it as much as, if not more, than any other picture in a long time. After the movie we went into Dempsey’s and sipped cocktails, and then they came home with us for dinner and to talk and reminisce and plan for awhile. They’re real nice people - I like 'em good inspite of everything. I heard from Dossie and Eddie Damm - also a sweet letter from Freddie enclosing a picture of the girl to whom he’s engaged for me too see!
SEPTEMBER 8
A nice day! I met Lou at Roosevelt Avenue just before twelve and then on to New York to mosey around Lord & Taylor’s trying to get decorative ideas for improving the KΔ house but things were too extreme for our collegiate ways! Then we went to the Gypsy Tea Room for lunch and to have our fortunes told - very interesting! After that we went to the Ambassador theater and saw “Blossom Time” - music costumes and acting were swell - good show about Schubert’s life and music. I met Mother and Dad at Dempsey’s for dinner and sat at the table next Jack and his two children. After that - back to the H.G.C. meeting at Jeannettes for gab - nothing exciting. Italy unconditionally surrendered to the Allies. Best news since the war began! Is victory nearer? I’m so glad!!
SEPTEMBER 9
Today started off pretty well. Mother and I went into New York and bought me my beauty of a red three-piece suit (The pockets on the other had been cockeyed!) and a cute black hat too; so I glowed with it all. We skirted the big Parade (opening 3rd War Bond Drive!), had a sandwich at the Milk Barn and then went to Robert’s where I had my hair shampooed and set (first since after the permanent!) We came home and Nana was here. Very bad news! Bill had tried to call me last night but I was out, as tonight he called again, and the result wasn’t too cheery. It seems there’s a convention in Clinton over the weekend and cause I hadn’t let him know sooner he couldn’t yet a room anyware. God I’m so disappointed. I’d wanted to go so badly. We talked for quite while and he seemed as disappointed as I. We haven’t really talked in so long, and it’d have been wonderful. Oh hell!
SEPTEMBER 10
I turned completely tragically dramatic and sobbed all last night so that this morning my eyes are just slits. I hadn’t really cried in ages and splurted forth all I’d saved up. Silly, but I really cleaned out my nasal passages! Mom decided to pacify me with a program of activity so we went into New York for a Chinese Lunch at the China Clipper and then went to the Roxy to see “Heaven Can Wait” with Don Ameche and Gene Tierney - very amusing and I liked it good. We went to Saks for a pair of jodphur pants - and then to Dr. Weiss for the usual. We met Dad at the Boar’s Head on Lexington Avenue and our mouths watered over good soft shell crabs. Glory came over late in the evening, and spent the night. We talked n’ talked - slept together in the double bed and were real restless.
SEPTEMBER 11
An active day! Fairly early, Bugsie and I dressed in our riding togs, and after meeting Cam, Aud and Irene we trekked to 188th St. and hopped on horses. At least the rest hopped but not having gone in over two years, I was more or less shoved on by an innocently obliging bystander. Once we started posting and cantering through Cunningham Park however it was wonderful and the ride a beautiful one. Irene fell off to lend excitement. We went back to Glory’s for lunch and chatted awhile; then, this evening rather unexpectedly, Glory, Aud, Irene, Cam, Edith and Jean all came in, and we howled hysterically over old diaries of Aud & Irene revealing their “supreme thrills” of grammar and high school days. Jean’s baby’ll arrive the end of February supposedly - it doesn’t seem possible. Anyhoo, the evening was fun!
SEPTEMBER 12
Limping and nursing sore aching muscles, Aud and I practically dragged ourselves to St. Gabe’s this morning and squirmed on the comparatively hard wooden seats. Mr. Condit is back for his first service of the new year and is really a marvelous rector. Mr. Judd has accepted an offer at Christ Church outside of Philadelphia, and will leave St. Gabe’s the end of this month. After church we stopped at Glory’s for a few moments and then home. Mother, Dad and I to celebrate the lifting of the pleasure driving ban, drove to the Triangle restaurant for a good dinner - and then home again! The Germans have occupied Rome and Italy and Germany are now fighting - the quirks of alliances of warfare. Our forces are fighting too and Italy’s surrender isn’t as optimistic as first thought.
SEPTEMBER 13
Yesterday morning’s muscle weariness was eased by a lovely mail today. I heard from Bill Boyd - back from maneuvers and writing again at last. He's still waiting for his transfer orders to the Air Corps, and wrote a long perkish letter while waiting. Then - Floyd - till in San Francisco - wrote a wonderfully philosophic gem expressing his emotions on going overseas. It was really good! This afternoon Mother and I went to the Valencia to see Merle Oberon and Brian Aherne in First Comes Courage (the usual spies-and-commandos-in-Norway stuff) and Donald O’Connor in Mr. Big - a cute jitterbug job. Tonight, Glory, Aud and I went bowling and had a stupid old time again. I bowled 78 - an improvement over last time - but not too good! I blame it on my muscles.
SEPTEMBER 14
This morning was dedicated to a series of “friendly discussions” before I went into the city to meet Cary, back from her two week’s jaunt in Kentucky, Annapolis, Washington, etc. We talked a blue streak to catch up on what had passed in the meantime. Two friends of hers were there from Annapolis. We had a sandwich next door; they left and we spent the afternoon trying to pick up Cary’s bags at Penn Station. I met Mother and Dad at the China Clipper for dinner and talking and so on home. Confusion! I got a special from Bill Brennan enclosing another letter he’d sent me -- addressed correctly -- but which had been returned to me. If I’d gotten that letter in time, the room situation could have been cleared up and I might have gone to Hamilton. Damn the post office!
SEPTEMBER 15
An emotional day! It was cloudy, so we couldn’t go on our boat trip as planned. Instead Mother, Louise and I went to the music Hall to see “So Proudly We Hail,” the epic of the bravery of the army nurses on Bataan and Corregidor. It was powerful! The stage show Minstrel Days was quite good too, though different from the usual Radio City ones. Louise and I met Cary on 29th Street at 4:30 went to the Little Church Around the Corner to see Marty and Tommy, married. We stood and beamed and felt quite parental as we shook our heads, saying it doesn’t seem possible! though we knew they’d really been planning it for ages. They’re both swell. Lou and I came home on the 5th Avenue bus to Jackson Heights. Tonight Mother & I went over to Thompsons to see Jack & Margie. They’re going to Eustis!
SEPTEMBER 16
I should have left for Billsburg today but am extremely grateful for the extra week at home. Excitement came this morning when the radiator leaking from my john made the downstairs hall look as though it had been blitzed. What a mess! This afternoon mother and I went over to Jersey, stopping at Aunt Bert’s and then at Aunt Fan’s. I saw Ruth’s two-year old baby Gail and loved her immediately. She’s a darling! The afternoon was pleasant - tending towards the crazy. We then went over to Brooklyn and met Dad for dinner at the St. George, and so home in the downpour. Nana was here. After awhile I went to bed and dove into the new Good Housekeeping.
SEPTEMBER 17
Once again we’d planned on going 'round Manhattan Island in a boat, but once again it kept raining instead. So I went into Brooklyn (riding on the train with Mrs. Ingold) and met Dad for lunch. It was the first “date” we’d had in ages so we kind o’ talked as I munched on my shrimp curry. We hopped a subway and went back to the office for awhile, stopping to buy stockings on the way, and I generally messed up his business day. It was fun and executivish though! This evening I went over to Glory’s and peeked at the preparations for the shower she gave for Doris De Brodt Deane; and then Mother, Lizzie and I went to see “The Student Prince” starring Everett Marshall. It was very good - another of the epidemic of operetta revivals!
SEPTEMBER 18
“London bridges falling down….. Falling down…..!” Where we had Niagara Falls in the downstairs hall, the plasters are today pulling the whole darned business down, till the ceiling lies in chunks on the floor and dust from it floats throughout the house choking us off as we try to breathe. Ah! for the well-ordered peace of a boiler factory! This morning Mother and I went to Jamacia to buy last minute powder puffs, toothbrushes and emory boards, and pick up a pair of moccassins and a pair of black non rationed shoes, which I treasure as a good bargain. We were s’posed to go to Connie Korn’s wedding today, but being the last weekend home and all, we didn’t, so I thought hard about her instead. And so have two KΔs bit the dust in the same week!
SEPTEMBER 19
The last Sunday at home! Aud and I went to St. Gabe’s where Rev. Condit preached with a voice which kept failing him on account of a cold - the service was usual We had roast lamb for dinner and then discussed the pros and cons of driving down to Billsburg with Marjorie Thompson since Jack needs the car at Eustis. It would be exciting to take a long auto trip legally in gas ration days but it might be complicated too. I think we’ll do it though! Afterwards, Glory and Aud came over and we trekked to Tiedeman’s for sodas; rehashing the problem of “So Little Time - and so much to do - and so many friends to want to be with.” Dad should have gone into the Waldorf for a convention (W.S.J.A.) but stayed here instead. - I wrote Danny, Colby, Bill & Bill.
SEPTEMBER 20
A lovely mail, being as how I heard from Bill Boyd (enclosing a cut cartoon from Yank, the army newspaper) whose transfer orders have come through, but who doesn’t know where he’ll be sent yet! Then too, I got another real nice letter from Bill Hughes - still in Australia! This morning, I went to the dentist for a checkup and for the first time in really ages, I have no cavities. My teeth have passed the adolescent stage! Then I moseyed around Jamaica, after which I came home and baked cookies (sending most of the better ones to Bill Brennan) Cary came out this afternoon and to spend the night - Glory and Aud came for dinner too (steak - how dreamy!) We hysterically played bridge, being interrupted by a blackout and then all walked Audrey home.
SEPTEMBER 21
Such a beautiful day! I woke early to keep my 9:00 a.m. dentist appointment and had my teeth cleaned till they sparkle. I hopped into riding clothes - saw Cary on her bus - and met Joanie for a wonderful ride in Cunningham Park. Peter Pan cantered like a streak of greased lightning and we flew along. It was really swell! Joanie treated me to a coke too and after awhile came over to the house to buy me a War Bond. (I’m crazy - I mean “sell” me a War Bond!) so I backed the attack! Mother and I went to Robert’s where I had my hair set for the final time, and then came home waiting for Nana’s arrival. Dad’s still at the convention. Surprise! Bill Brennan sent me 16 American Beauty roses with a really perky card enclosed. Gosh I’m so very thrilled!
SEPTEMBER 22
Being my last day at home, it was a busy-beaverish one. When I awoke, I wrote Bill Hughes and a perkish thank you note to Bill Brennan - also answered the letter which came from Corporal Eddie Damm. After that we packed suitcases and then drove over to take my ticket to Louise, stopping for a lengthy chat. We ate a Chinese lunch at a restaurant by the Queens Bors Hall, and then went to Jamacia and bought several pairs of pants and a pair of pajamas. Dad came out early and told us of his troubles a la business world. He’s really doing the job of three or four men plus the Post War Planning and National Bond, etc committee stuff he has to do. I went to a H.G.C. meeting and said “Goodbye” to all the girls.
SEPTEMBER 23
The official end to the summer and a real wonderful one it was too. Mother, Marjorie (both of her), Cary and I sent ourselves down in the ’41 Packard snuggled in with suitcases, boxes and the like. It was blissful to ride in a car after the years of gas rationing. We stopped on the road and ate a picnic lunch, which Aunt Bert had made. Most all the way, Cary and I burst forth into song and the time passed quickly. We reached Billsburg at 8:00 and had dinner at the Lodge - then, real excited - we came back to the house and saw everybody. Doggone, I do love it so good! It’s super being with all the gals - specially Beth and Punchy! So very much fun! A stupendously perky letter from Bill Boyd
SEPTEMBER 24
We slept and talked in bed still after ten really catching up on the news of each other’s summers. This morning Beth, Punchy and I went downtown to buy grapefruit juice for improvised breakfasts of the future and to look into the bank account and cafeteria book situation! I met Mother and Marjorie for lunch and spent the evening with them too. I wrote postcards and read Life and the Saturday Evening Post. I met Chuck Gondak and talked familiarly with him for quite awhile. He wants Punchy and me to work for the telephone co again this year at the U.S.O. It’d have been fun but we’ve got too much else to do. Fun tonight in the room!
SEPTEMBER 25
A busyish day! This morning I tiptoed around not to wake the fair roommates as I dressed for my 8:20 appointment with advisor, Dr. Marsh. Surprisingly I had no conflicts and am now officially taking Money & Banking, Statistics, Accounting, Marketing Principles & Problems, Introduction to Business Enterprise and General Psychology plus gym of course. It sounds kind o' stiff but after all, I’ve come to college, essentially to exercise my gray matter. I spent the morning with Muggy Pratt and trying in vain to locate my trunk - I still have no shoes - and ate with Beth & Punchy at the dining hall - this evening I went to the Lodge with Mother and had dinner. Hell! Wouldn’t you know! Bill Hughes wrote me from Boston - he wanted to come see me in New York this weekend. Two days too late!!
SEPTEMBER 26
Sunday, and a busy one too! This morning we trekked over to Chandler and picked up our little sisters to take them to Bruton - mine, Gin Tunstall, is darling! After the service, we went to the dining hall for the traditional southern fried chicken and ice cream - and then back to the house to prepare for the influx of freshman girls making a tour of the sorority house. The same things were said over and over again - with slight variations of course, and our jaws aching from smiling sweetly as we said them and as we listened. It was fun, in a boring sort of way. Beth, Punchy and I went to the Lodge to meet Mother for dinner. We laughed a lot and were most unsophisticated.
SEPTEMBER 27
School bells chimed again and I am officially a Junior - it’s so impressive being respected for a change! I only had three classes. Dr. Foltin stood us up for Psych and after standing around in the hall for awhile we left for the Wigwam to buy books. I became nasty when I discovered I had to pay $24 for beatup secondhand books too. Marketing sounds fascinating - full of merchandising and advertising, the sort of stuff I want. Rhythms only lasted five minutes, which was a lovely sort of gym class. Mother came to the house this afternoon and offered ideas on redecorating our room. It sounds dreamy! May they materialize! There was a W.S.C.G.A meeting tonight with the usual welcomes & news about a German Club dance for the A.S.J.U. boys. House meeting afterwards and then bull sessions about rushing and sex
SEPTEMBER 28
Right about now we’re in a mad dash of enthusiasm - we’re all out for studies, all out for extracurricular stuff, and all out for improving the house, and KΔ in general. Such a busy little year as it’s gonna be! Money and Banking, Business Enterprise, Statistics and Accounting all involve scads of work and I groan under the weight of it. Oh, for just one snap course - it’d be so refreshing! Mother, Holly Miller and I had dinner together at the Lodge and then I went to the Flat Hat Business Staff meeting. We were assigned ads to get so I will merrily trek around town having people sign contracts and pay money - I hope! We get commissions too. Sorority meeting, though informal, was inspiring in its plans. I hope the spirit lasts! Letter from Edith and Evie
SEPTEMBER 29
A busy day, with classes from nine till 4:30P.M. with time out to see Mother off on the morning train. It seems odd not to have her around anymore. Classes were still interesting except for Statistics lab which really is a stinker. If it weren’t required for my major, I’d gladly toy with the idea of dropping it, but grin 'n' bear it, say I. At 5:00 Beth, Punchy, Lou and I went to a Social Committee meeting for the War Work at college, where plans were made for various affairs to be given for the chaplains, their assistants, etc. After a cone at the Wigwam we watched the review of the A.S.J.U boys out on the football field. It was impressive - a far cry from the football rallies of a year ago. This evening, Midge and I went to chapel at which Dr. Foltin spoke and then I came home, washed my hair, did homework and went to a house meeting.
SEPTEMBER 30
Such a rainy day - I’ve never been so wet - honest! Life perked up though when Mr. Nuguist decided to make our introductory approach to statistics more simple and when I discovered that I like accounting a lot. We walked in the pouring rain to dinner across campus and were drenched to the skin. After our good vegetablish dinner we waded through the flooded paths with the wind blowing the rain in streams upon us to the Colonial Echo meeting - and got ourselves on the Editorial Staff. We were supposed to go to a Big-little sister party in Barrett but by then water was seeping through our rubber boots even and we gave ourselves alcohol rubdowns instead. A letter from Dossie and a card from Bill Boyd from Kansas City “en route to Mississippi”

“What about the car?” you asked.
“Leave it. We don’t need it.”
You and Yunho walked side by side as you finally matched his pace until you both arrived at your run-down studio apartment. The entirety of the walk consisted of utter silence as you both didn’t speak a single word. You unlocked your apartment door and turned to face Yunho who was waiting behind you.
“You can stay out here, I really don’t have a lot of stuff…”
Yunho looked at you for a moment and you were about to repeat what you’ve just said but he walks past you, inviting himself in as he muttered, “It’s fine.”
As Yunho walked in, he observed your place, stunned. It was definitely minimal... Not the type of minimalist sense of style that he was used to back at the mansion. It was the type of minimal with lack of care in oneself. The apartment was spotless. Not in the way of cleanliness but more so that there wasn’t even an opportunity for it to get untidy. He couldn’t find a single drop of character within the place you resided in all these years, only a mattress without its frame and two wardrobes that were aligned side by side.
It was cold and lonely.
He heard you speak up from behind him, “I told you.”
Yunho opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted by you, “It’s fine. This is how I like it.”
But Yunho didn’t believe you. It’s not that you liked it. He knew that this is just how you’ve lived your entire life and didn’t know how to live any other way.
“Why do you have two wardrobes though?” he asked, thinking about how it’s odd to see two in this tiny apartment.
“One is for clothes, the other is for weaponry.”
“That doesn’t really hide your weapons well if someone comes…”
“I just like to keep things tidy,” you answered him all so monotonously, as you began to pack your things.
Yunho also noticed how back at the mansion, you at least showed a small bit of personality but here… it felt like he was speaking to a robot, completely lifeless. He saw that you did have a variety of clothes and makeup but not much, most likely just to seem like a “normal” civilian if anyone saw you.
He continued to observe you as you closed your one single luggage, and turned to face him, “Let’s go.”
You walked out the door, and Yunho followed. When you both reached outside, Yunho took your suitcase but you still had a firm grip on it.
“I can carry it,” you slightly snapped.
“I’ll carry it. It’s what I came here for anyways and Hongjoong will get mad at me if I didn’t do anything,” Yunho replied as he shook your grasp off from the luggage.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hyung… aren’t they taking a little too long?” Yeosang questioned to Hongjoong as all the members are currently gathered at the living room, summoned by Hongjoong because he wanted to hold a meeting regarding something but they were all waiting for you and Yunho to return so they can begin.
“I bet they killed each other. I told you guys this wasn’t a good idea,” Jongho spoke up.
“I tried calling Yunho but he won’t pick up…” Seonghwa also fretted but Hongjoong remained silent.
‘Maybe we should go look for them?-”
“No.”
All of the members turned to Hongjoong as Yeosang tried to reason with him, “But hyung, I think we should go look-”
“No,” the leader spoke decisively, “Yunho may not care for her as much as the rest of us do but he’ll never let anything happen to her. Trust him more.”
The members murmured in agreement but the atmosphere was still filled with worry. Even Hongjoong looked concerned despite trying his best not to project it to the others.
The room was filled with silence but full of inner thoughts until everyone’s heads turned to you and Yunho when you both suddenly walked in.
“Hey! What took you guys so long?” Wooyoung called out to you both.
“We walked there so it just took a little longer than expected,” Yunho answered back.
“You guys walked there? Why?” San questioned to you both. You fell stiff because even you didn’t understand why Yunho suddenly decided to walk halfway there.
“Why not? Less pollution,” Yunho stated curtly and everyone gave questioning looks at him.
All the members definitely wanted to pry for the real reason but when they observed your quiet nature and Yunho sending silent signals with his eyes to not ask, they dropped it immediately, hiding their curiosity.
“Well, I’m glad you’re both back here safely either way. I actually wanted to hold a meeting so we were all waiting for you both to come home so we could begin.”
You looked at the leader and finally spoke for the first time since you both arrived back the mansion, “A meeting?”
Hongjoong nodded, “Yeah, and since everyone is here now. I’ll begin.”
Each member gave their leader their undivided attention as he continued, “Since we have a new member now, I want us to meet at the training room so we can all train together for the entirety of this week. I want us to observe each other’s movements so when we all go on a mission together, we’ll be perfectly synced. We’ll meet in the basement at 8 am. I don’t want to see anyone late,” Hongjoong scanned Wooyoung as he said the last sentence, definitely indirectly calling out his younger member’s sleeping habits.
“I know, I know~ you don’t have to worry about me,” Wooyoung responded.
“Maybe if you stopped oversleeping then no one would have to worry about you,” San joked with him, earning a stifled laugh from all of the members.
You still couldn’t comprehend how they were able to joke around and always laugh even during a supposedly time of a “meeting”. If they were to do something like this back at your organization, they would’ve been dead long ago… You didn’t know why, but something about that made you feel extremely nauseous.
As you were lost in your own thoughts, you didn’t notice how Yunho was observing you, much like he did all day.
“SO-“ Hongjoong brought everyone’s attention back to him once again, “So, we will start fresh tomorrow morning. Meeting dismissed!”
Everyone retreated to their rooms one by one while Mingi and Hongjoong went to his office, most likely to discuss the plan for the week.
“Thanks for the help,” you mumbled at Yunho as you took your luggage from him and retreated to the guest bedroom. By now, everyone was gone from the living room except for Yunho and Yeosang, who was looking at him expectantly.
“So, what really happened today?” Yeosang asked as Yunho relaxed on the leather sofa next to him.
“It seemed like she didn’t like riding cars so we walked. That’s all.”
“Hmm. That’s all?”
“Yup.”
“So you guys walked all the way to her apartment because you were concerned about her not liking to ride cars?”
“No, I wasn’t concerned. I just did it.”
Yeosang glanced at Yunho, who closed his eyes and sunk into the couch more. He couldn’t tell if Yunho was being oblivious or just…stupid so he simply continued to stare at Yunho.
“Stop looking at me like that. I swear I just did it because I felt like it,” Yunho opened one of his eyes slightly to peek at Yeosang who was smiling at him cheekily. Yunho sighed loudly as he stood up from the couch and walked in the opposite direction from where their rooms were at.
“Where are you going?”
“I’m going to go get the car…”
Yeosang stared at Yunho until his figure disappeared from his field of vision, unable to hide his grin, “I knew you would’ve ended up caring for her.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After you took a warm shower, still not completely used to the overly spacious bathroom, your body felt heavy as you dragged yourself underneath the covers and your body gradually immersed within the bed. You didn’t understand why, but you’ve felt unwanted memories suffocating you ever since going to your apartment. Little by little, you finally dozed into your temporary rest.
The sunlight soaked through your closed eyelids, alerting yourself awake. You opened your eyes and saw a vast deep blue sky before you as the clouds flowed where the wind was taking them.
You sat up and questioned where you were. How did I end up on the ground?-
“Nana!”
You quickly stood up and desperately looked around to find the owner of the familiar voice. Who was calling you?
“Nana! There you are!”
You turned around and saw Set running towards you. Ah…that voice. That’s right, it was Set’s. You must have been dreaming about your memories again.
“Nana, are you okay? What’s wrong?”
You smiled at your brother and pointed up at the sky, “Look Set! The sky is almost as blue as Professor’s shoes!”
Set looked up and mimicked your smile as he put his hand on top of your head, “Yeah, it’s beautiful but Nana, look at the ground. I’ll teach you another color.”
You looked down anticipatingly, “The grass?”
“Yup. It’s green.”
“Green…” you repeated the name of your new knowledge of the color. A gush of wind picked up as it danced with the grass, tickling your legs and imprinting your memories of the color green.
Much like this, Set taught you many more colors.
Purple from the grapes you both ate for lunch.
Yellow from the sun you both gazed at until the sun eventually began retiring for the day and gradually shifted to orange.
The same type of orange as the chair you and Set sat on as he read aloud many books you both enjoyed.
Ever since learning about colors, you became more aware of the beauty of your surroundings. As much as you loved learning, Set loved teaching you.
On one particularly rainy day, you and Set were sitting on the orange chairs as you both stared out the window. You intensely observed each raindrop as it hit the glass, but Set was observing the gate outside that surrounded the perimeter of the facility. He gazed beyond the confining premises...
A siren sounded you and Set’s room suddenly, gaining both of your attention.
“Ah, dinner’s ready. Come on, Nana. Let’s go.”
You nodded and got up as you head towards the door. Set took one last look at the gates and then followed you out the door.
As you and Set entered the cafeteria, you both gained looks from the others who resided in the facility. Mealtime was the only time when all ten of you gathered, but you’ve never spoken to each other before as it was against the rules. Occasionally, they would share a quick smile with you as you would do for them. It became an unspoken rule for all of you to do so to show acknowledgment within one another. You and Set sat down on one of the unoccupied tables.
Set noticed you grinning instead of eating your beef stew.
“Whatcha grinning about, Nana?”
“I’m just really happy to be here. I hope I can be here with you forever.”
Set’s heart cracked a little upon hearing what you’ve said and mumbled, more to himself, “This isn’t how we should live…”
“What?”
“Nothing… you should eat your stew before it gets cold.”
You nodded, taking the spoon to take a bite but you paused, “Set, can I ask you something?”
“Of course,” Set answered as he gave you his attention.
“C-Can I maybe call you brother? I’ve read it in books before where the younger sibling calls the older one brother or sister. I know we’re the same age but since you got here before me, I see you as my older brother and I’ve always wanted to call you that...” you slightly fidgeted nervously, uncertain about how he would feel about the idea.
Set smiled deeply, a true smile that was caused by genuine happiness.
“Of course you can!” he answered as he reached over the table and put his hand on your head, patting it gently.
You beamed at his acceptance, “Thank you, brother!”
You felt the sunlight soaking through your eyelids once again and opened your eyes, back to reality.
How long has it been before I felt the same type of happiness I’ve felt during that time? You questioned to yourself.
Where was your brother…?
After taking a few more motionless moments, you got up to get ready. It was the first day of training with the others and you didn’t know what to expect but this was the perfect opportunity to give the intel that your boss required of you. You changed into your black athletic wear and head out to go to the basement.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you were nearing your destination, you heard a deafening yell coming from the basement along with a unique high pitched laugh that followed with it.
“Jongho! Stop hitting the punching bag like that! You’re gonna break your knuckles,” you heard coming from a familiar voice.
You guessed it was most likely Wooyoung’s and saw that your inkling was right when you entered the training room with Wooyoung collapsed on the floor with laughter and Jongho striking his fists on the punching bag at an abnormally fast pace. The others were spread out sporadically in different areas, honestly, it surprised you that they were all present even though there was still 15 minutes before the promised time. Mingi and Seonghwa were having a combat match while Hongjoong observed them. Yeosang was sitting on the benches on the sideline, laughing at Jongho and Wooyoung. San was throwing knives at a target on the other side of the room while Yunho was in a shooting range which was in an enclosed area that was transparent with glass, making it visible as he shot on the target. Both San and Yunho’s aims were nearly impeccable, as they each hit the center. Mingi was the first one to notice you as he was the only one that was originally facing your direction, and announced your arrival, gaining the looks of all eight of them.
“Y/n! You’re early,” Seonghwa said as they all began gathering around you, except for San and Yunho who were still in the mini glass section of the room.
“You’re all early too,” you answered back.
“Ah, yeah. We were just excited since it’s been a while since we were able to find the time to train together as a whole,” Mingi added.
You nodded in understanding along with the others, seeing the strong bond the boys had for each other.
“Well, now that we’re all here. Let’s start,” Hongjoong stated, his tone shifting with leadership as he continued, “Y/n, if I remember correctly what ZG had told me, I believe you’re capable of all fields but specialize in blades?”
You nodded as San swiftly swings his arm around your shoulders, jumping a little as he startled you, “Ahh, just like me~”
“I figured. I saw you throwing knives. Your aim was pretty good,” you uttered as you glanced at the red-haired boy.
San gazed into your eyes as he pulled you closer slightly and smiled, exposing the dimples that lie on either side of his mouth symmetrically.
“As I was saying-“ you averted your eyes from San’s as you brought your attention back to Hongjoong upon hearing his voice, who along with the some of the other members, looked at you both intriguingly, “I wanted to see your skills with my own eyes.”
“How about a mock battle between you and San? I wanna see you kick his ass,” Wooyoung suggested playfully.
San removed his arm around your shoulder and gave Wooyoung a joking slap on the nape, complaining about the lack of faith from his best friend.
You immediately noticed the change in temperature due to the sudden loss of contact of where his arm used to be. It felt colder and you also sensed an unknown fluttering in your stomach.
“Actually, a mock battle isn’t a bad idea. What do you say?” Hongjoong looked at you eagerly and you accepted. The others all went up to the balcony to observe from above, hearing the faint voices of them guessing who would win. You and San went to the weaponry table. Seeing all types of blades aligning perfectly before you gave you some sort of satisfaction and excitement.
“Nice, isn’t it?” San asked as he chuckled, seeing the delight in your eyes even though you tried to hide it from your face.
“Yeah, it’s pretty,” you mumbled.
San watched as you continued to inspect each weapon, finding joy in that someone shared the same admiration of blades as much as he did.
“These are my favorite,” San reached forward and grabbed the two 18-inch swords and handed them to you as you inspected it. The twin blades had a straight clean cut with a simple black leather handle that blended with the metal into one straight bar. It was exquisitely crafted.
“It’s beautiful,” you whispered to yourself as you admired the blades but San heard you.
“You can use those.”
“But aren’t these your favorite?”
“Yeah, but I’ll let you borrow them since you seem to love them so much,” San teased and you felt your face heating up.
“Ya! What’s taking you guys so long? I want to see some slicing!” Jongho called out from the balcony, mimicking what he said as he sliced the air with his arms.
“Geez, hang on. We take our weapons very seriously!” San called back as the members complained.
“Come on. We should go now,” San turned to you and placed his hand on top of your head before he walked towards the center of the training room. The action caught you off guard as the memories of your brother flashed through your mind. His touch felt nostalgic yet still somehow different from familiarity.
Not now...
You shake your thoughts away and followed San to the center, and faced him as you mirrored him.
“Ready...fight!”
NOTES: "Japanese" "Italian" 'Thinking' 'Tsuna's eye speak' [Phone call]
DISCLAIMER: I do not own Katekyo Hitman Reborn. Amano Akira does.
Somewhere hidden~
"It's starting, isn't it?" Kawahira asked in an isolated yet unknown place.
The other half Tri-Ni-Sette Advisor nodded. "Yes, the gears are in place, now the pieces will start moving to get information."
Kawahira glanced at his companion, "It was a good thing for him to seek me on that day, isn't that right?"
"That's right," the other half replied replied. "It was a good thing. You managed to inform him of... our predicament."
Both advisors turned towards the screen in front of them that was displaying the activities of a certain arcobaleno.
"The gears have started to move; now there is no turning back," both advisors said at the same time.
XX..XX
Reborn, the sun arcobaleno, was walking back home. He was unusually deep in thought, so deep that he had let his guard down... a little.
There are two Tri-Ni-Sette advisors? Since when did this happen? Ugh, what is wrong with this world?!
He continued to walk back home. The sun was starting to set and it was getting dark. He recalled the talk he had with the three skies just a few hours ago.
-------
"There is one more Tri-Ni-Sette advisor," Byakuran said glumly.
Reborn's head snapped back up in that instance and he immediately demanded, "What?"
Byakuran merely nodded, "A few months after you got cursed, I visited Kawahira. I don't know why but I just had the feeling that I had to. After managing to contact him, I asked him straight out if there was something wrong with the balance of the Tri-Ni-Sette." He paused to let the hitman absorb his words.
He, then, continued when he saw the hitman nod, "He said that there was still the same problem as there was before and nothing had changed, except that time was running out. I don't know what convinced him to tell me this information but he did."
"He told me to spread whatever he was going to say to the other mafioso that knew of the Tri-Ni-Sette. His words were, 'Now there is no longer 1 Tri-Ni-Sette advisor but rather two. While one is ruthless in other to keep the balance of the Earth; the other is looking for alternatives to keep everyone safe and happy. Both advisors will be seen together if either one happens to be in trouble. This is the vow that the advisors have made and any harm to anyone one of us by anyone will pay. Even if they happen to be family.'"
Reborn looked wary, "Did he tell you who the other half is?"
Byakuran shook his head, "He didn't but I'll say this: The other half is looking to break the Arcobaleno curse. He/She wasn't involved in cursing you."
Reborn nodded his head, "Do you know any potential candidates that could be the other half?"
Yuni piped in, "At first, we thought it was going to be Tsuna-san but both of them hadn't met. Not until we had him meet a few weeks ago."
"Besides, if that trash would have been the other half, he wouldn't have been able to hide it from us. Considering we know him for a very long time," Xanxus intervened.
Reborn nodded his head in approval. He also agreed with that, Tsuna was like an open book. Okay, maybe not so much in this world but he was his tutor for a long time, so he couldn't be hiding anything... now can he?
"Not to mention, I've known him since he was 6. He has shared many things with me!" Byakuran piped in, munching on a piece of marshmallow.
Reborn thought for a while before asking the one question that has always been plaguing his mind, "Then do you what that is? The thing that scares Tsuna so much whenever Ienari is there?"
.
.
"You should ask Tsu-chan on your own, Arcobaleno," Byakuran replied after a beat of silence. "I promised him I won't tell anyone this until he's ready to tell others."
Reborn looked disappointed but nodded his head regardless. "One thing thought," Reborn looked up. "Ienari... well, let's just say that whatever happened back then is one of the reasons why Tsu-chan doesn't speaks."
Reborn furrowed his eyebrows, "Doesn't he not speaks because of that injury on his throat? The one done by a sharp object?"
Everybody's head snapped to the hitman. "What injury?" All three skies asked at the same time.
Reborn looked perplexed, "Tsuna didn't tell you?"
Everybody shook their head in denial.
"That's the reason why Tsuna always wears clothes that can hide his neck. Hasn't anyone noticed this?"
.
.
"So that's why..." Byakuran mumbled. The other two nodded. Yuni asked," Uncle, do you know how severe his injury is?"
Reborn nodded, "A few days ago, Lambo accidentally dropped the 10 Year Bazooka at me, my TYL self decided to drop the bomb on everybody that his throat injury was the cause of him not speaking and hurting when speaking for too long. He also proceeded to get Shamal to make Sun-flame pills using my sun flames."
Yuni had paled at that; Byakuran's smile had turned into a thin line and his normally closed eyes opened; Xanxus frowned. They, all knew that Reborn's sun flames were very powerful. So, if Tsuna required Reborn's flames to help heal his throat then... the injury was bad.
They were aware that Tsuna had trouble speaking and there were times that pain did erupt, causing him to not speak. But they only thought it was because of what Ienari did. They never thought that it was another injury that was inflicted because of a sharp object. They had to tell the others....
Xanxus asked darkly, "Do you know which suicidal trash inflicted that injury?"
The 3 skies looked at Reborn expectantly who only shook his head, "No, Tsuna is very tight-lipped about this... but I have an idea."
"Who?"
"That idiotic and pathetic excuse of a father," Reborn spat out with venom.
Everyone looked surprised. "...What?" asked Byakuran.
"This is just my guess but it is highly likely that he was the one who did it."
"What makes you say that, Uncle?"
"You know of Nebesa right?"
Nods.
"Well, just a few days ago, Iemitsu came back home. I was out training Ienari when I felt a bad and ominous feeling creeping up my spine."
The 3 skies looked at each. They knew that the hitman was intuned with the brunet enough to know that something bad was about to happen. So, if he felt a bad feeling...
Reborn continued, knowing fully well what was going on in their heads, "I finished Ienari's training early and when I came home, I saw Iemitsu looking very proud. It was as though he had done something amazing. I don't know why but I went straight to Tsuna's room..."
They waited for the hitman to continue. "...In the middle of the room, I found Tsuna lying in a pool of his own blood. Without wasting anytime, I started healing and called Mukuro to take him to Nebesa and get Ryohei. I also called Shamal to check up on the brunet. He woke up after a few hours."
There was pin-drop silence in the room. The 3 skies were planning out what to do for revenge but they had to remember that it was a speculation. A speculation that could very well turn out to be true.
"That also reminds me..." the three snapped their heads to the hitman. "Mama said something suspicious before I left the house with Ienari today."
"Nana-san?" Yuni asked. Reborn nodded.
Byakuran narrowed his eyes, "Doesn't she ignores Tsuna. What weird things will she say?"
Xanxus huffed but it was clear even he agreed with Byakuran.
"...When I was leaving, Mama came up to me, when Ienari wasn't looking, and said: 'Please help Tsu-kun.'"
.
.
.
"...What?" Byakuran asked dumbfounded. "What are you saying?! She never showed concern for Tsu-chan even when that happened!"
The other 2 even looked skeptical. Reborn answered, "I don't what know what that is but she clearly said that to me. And her tone wasn't of someone that didn't care. Rather it was urgent and painful."
They stayed silent for a while before Byakuran said, "F*** this, what is wrong with this world?!"
The other 3 occupants could only agree wholeheartedly. This world was messed up, Period.
-------
Reborn was confused greatly and he did not like being left in the dark! What was going on and what the heck is wrong with this world? Ever since he received his memories, everything isn't making sense anymore.
Reborn blinked. That reminds me, how did I get my memories back? Don't you need Mist flames and the VG to activate it?
Reborn stopped in the middle of the road. Confused and wary at the revelation.
How did I get my memories back? It can't be Tsuna... I didn't feel Tsuna activating his flames at all...
What is going on?!
XX..XX
In the kitchen~
"I'm sorry but..., " Tsuna said to the mysterious figure he knows so well.
Said mysterious person looked worried, "...How long until this facade, Tsuna?! It's been 7 years since I've heard you speak since that happened! - not that I'm not happy about you suddenly speaking to me - but how long will this continue?!"
They were so into their worlds that they didn't notice the front door opening and a hitman walking towards the only source of light and sound.
Tsuna looked remorseful, "I'm sorry... but we need to do this."
"Need to do what Tsuna?" a voice came from behind.
Both of them tensed and turned around quickly. Behind, a certain hitman to both of them was standing there with an unreadable expression.
"I'll repeat: need to do what, Tsuna, Mama," the hitman responded to the two occupant of the two room.
.
.
(A/N: I was so tempted to stop there but I'll be nice and continue)
.
Both of them, Tsuna and the newly introduced Nana, were tense. They hadn't noticed Reborn coming in and were now caught red-handed. They had tried so hard to hide this from everyone and now it was pointless.
"Well?" the hitman asked irritated. He had just arrived after having that conversation with them and imagine his surprise when the supposedly mother who was supposed to be ignoring Tsuna was talking to him about something very important.
"...Tsu-kun, please we have to tell them. We can't continue on like this..." Nana said, looking at her son who she has been 'ignoring' for a long time.
Tsuna sighed, he knew he couldn't hide this anymore and everyone had a right to know. To know what happened back then and why his mother 'ignored' him.
He looked towards the hitman and told him. 'This will be a long talk, we'll talk at Nebesa tomorrow... Please call everyone even Shamal, just in case. Everyone except Ienari.'
Said hitman nodded and proceeded to call Tsuna's guardians. He even called the kids and Bianchi to make sure they would come tomorrow. They needed to know what was going on in this household. Heck, he needed to know what was going on!
And this new addition of a mystery puzzle doesn't helps!
