Good morning!!! 🌞☀️ This is one question we ask people when they wonder why we fuss about Sustainability. You see, if you’re only interested in making money and have no regard for the environment or the people around you, then the joke is on you. You can only shop where you have commodities and people selling them, if a disaster happens and lives are lost, money will never bring them back. Guys, let’s be intentional. Sustainability is life. #Life #Planet #Green #ecofriendly #Sustainability #quotes #truth #inspire #thinkgreen #environment #sharehumanity #love #weekend #sustyquotes #sustyvibes (at Lagos, Nigeria)

If you really think the environment is less important than the economy, try holding your breathe while you count your money. Small acts multiplied by millions of people can transform the world. Take care of your environment so it takes care of you. Driving Social Impact: Union Bank employees mark volunteer day
Tumblr media
On July 6, Union Bank employees (#TeamUnion), led by the Chief Executive Officer, Emeka Emuwa, turned out on the streets of Lagos, Kaduna, Anambra and seven other states for a clean-up exercise as part of activities to mark the Bank’s Employee Volunteer Day (#UBNEVDay). #UBNEVDay provides an avenue for employees to give back to their communities through various projects and activities that drive positive social change in their host communities. This year, the exercise took place in 15 locations across the six geopolitical regions of the country with more than 1,200 employees participating in the initiative along with their family and friends. In line with the theme: “Public Health and Wellbeing,” #TeamUnion cleaned up markets, major roads and other public areas. The employees also went a step further to create awareness on the importance of good sanitation, recycling and environmental sustainability. The exercise was carried out in conjunction with RecyclePoints, a waste recycling and social benefit venture and SustyVibes, a social enterprise redefining sustainability advocacy in Nigeria. Speaking on the initiative and the employees’ efforts, Emuwa said: “Social impact and community service are integral parts of our Corporate Social Responsibility efforts at Union Bank. We have a clear mission to play an active role in the development of our society as a sustainability champion. We are proud of our employees’ involvement as we continue to lead the charge for social responsibility and impact.” Union Bank remains committed to supporting the communities within which it operates. To mark the 2019 World Environment Day, the Bank’s employees car pooled to and from their offices as a way of cutting carbon emission and raising awareness about environmental pollution. Each year during the Yuletide season, the Bank and its employees make donations to the less privileged in the society under the UnionCares initiative. Last year, 8,000 care bags containing staple food items were distributed to underprivileged persons across the country. #UBNEVDay reinforces Union Bank’s commitment to building a workforce that is conscious about giving back to the communities where they live and work.

#MeToo and #TimesUp: How do offline actions and online actions compare?
Tumblr media
(Source: sustyvibes)
In the previous blog post, we discussed how social media platforms can be harnessed as a powerful tool for political campaigning. However, it is important to consider how much of an impact that offline actions may have in social movements in comparison to that of online actions.
Following the the rise of the #MeToo movement on Twitter against sexual harassment and sexual assault in the workplace, an open letter was published in The New York Times (2018) written by over 300 leading Hollywood actresses in response to an increasing number of allegations made against American film producer Harvey Weinstein. This has been described as “the biggest action-oriented response to the stream of sexual harassment allegations” (Thomson, 2018). In turn, the guests of the Golden Globe Awards 2018 were invited to wear black to show their support for the movement; others decided on wearing pin badges on their suits (Weaver, 2018).

While #MeToo and #TimesUp went viral due to the input of celebrities and influencers such at Gwyneth Paltrow and Cara Delevingne (Vogue, 2017) and it had the support by thousands of ordinary people who could relate on the issue at hand; both of these events can be considered as  offline actions as they took place away from social media to begin with. While the world is aware of the movement through the hashtag, we should be aware that they were created following the events: the offline actions are the source of any resulting online action.
But, what do we gain through online action? As briefly outlined in the last blog post, online actions result in the coverage of events, as well as education of a larger and more global audience. The growth of social media has allowed modern day protesters to expand from traditional media formats such a television and radio, to more efficient platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram whereby they can regulate their own content without risk of it being manipulated by journalists and allowing them to “circulate their own narratives” (Freelon, McIlwain & Clark, 2016). With stories being shared from the source itself, there is a better chance of it being truthful and more realistic. Additionally, we are more likely to hear about an event taking place through mobilisations on social media than being there at the moment the event takes place.

“Getting something trending on Twitter means that people are talking, they are conscious. And that consciousness can lead to action.” (Shree, 2016)
In conclusion, modern-day social media allows the global population to learn about issue’s in society, are in turn more inclined to take action and get involved with bringing about change. Offline actions as “the spark” are equally as important as the online actions that create momentum to movements.

One of the world’s biggest chemical companies is now using recycled plastic to build new roads.
The planet has a massive problem with plastic.
On the macro level, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which lies between the coast of California and Hawaii, is made of 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic debris and is twice the size of Texas.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch weighs 87,000 tons — 16 times more than previous estimates — more than the weight of 43,000 cars & and contains more than 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic, a recent study shows. In the patch there is more plastic than plankton. #plasticpollution pic.twitter.com/F5rIKU5v5H
— ClimateEarth 🌿🌎🌊 🐘🐅🐳⛈️ (@climate_earth) March 6, 2019
On a micro level, a recent study published in The Guardian found that microplastic pollution has been found “everywhere” they’ve looked, from the UK’s lakes and rivers to U.S. groundwater to the Yangtze river in China and off coast of Spain.

One of the world’s largest producers of the planet’s biggest nuisance, Dow Chemical, has found a practical way to reuse plastic, keeping it our of our landfills and oceans.
In 2017, the company began building roads using recycled plastic and its already saved 220,000 pounds from going into landfills.
It all started when Indonesia, the world’s second-largest contributor to marine plastic pollution, reached out to Dow for a solution to its problem. So Dow helped show the Indonesians how to convert their plastic into roads. The company then carried out similar efforts in Thailand and India.
India is building durable roads from plastic wastes and we are here for it!#Recycling #Upcycling #PlasticRoad #Plastics pic.twitter.com/3EpFmgjhXJ
— SustyVibes (@SustyVibes) March 7, 2019
In February, Dow brought their recycling program stateside by paving two private roads at their facilities in Freeport, Texas using 1,700 pounds of recycled plastic.
We are proud of our member @DowChemical for developing the most #PlasticRoad in America, made of post-consumer #recycled plastic. https://t.co/jdxeOHxt4r pic.twitter.com/flBXpTNVn3
— PLASTICS_US (@PLASTICS_US) March 12, 2019
In addition to reducing pollution, plastic roads are also more durable than those built with asphalt. A 2015 study out of Denmark says plastic roads can last up to 50 years, three times longer than a traditional asphalt mixture.
Plastic roads are also more resistant to corrosion and weather than asphalt which may reduce the number of potholes.
Conversely, some environmentalists fear that heating the plastic to turn it into roads may release toxic fumes that are harmful to the Earth’s atmosphere.
Dow says its new roads are made with a combination of asphalt and plastic, but it won’t reveal the exact percentage of each material.
Plastic roads would help solve two major problems the United States is facing. It is the world’s twelfth-largest producer of marine plastic and is in need of a major infrastructure upgrade. When the Trump Administration finally gets to infrastructure week, this should be a top priority.
