have you ever read child bride by suzanne finstead? do you find it accurate.
Tumblr media
thank you very much for this ask ꨄ︎!!
I have indeed read "Child Bride” and as for its’ accuracy I wouldn't go as far to say it's entirely inaccurate but I do have several bones to pick with Suzanne Finstad as a biographer as I believe she has let her bias (obviously not liking Priscilla) get in the way of her better judgment, which in turn, has corrupted the overall validity of her book. For example, giving Currie Grant a platform to tell his version of events regarding Elvis and Priscilla in Germany, including a claim so egregious that I truly have trouble understanding why so many in this fandom praise this book 😭
I think a lot of Elvis fans consider/recommend “Child Bride” as the antithesis to Priscilla’s “Elvis and Me” which is fair considering Finstad highlights some very valid criticisms against Priscilla i.e her hiring a second, much more aggressive, lawyer to get more money out of Elvis, and her introducing her family (Lisa Marie and later on Navarone) to the “church” aka cult of Scientology etc. etc.
- however -
The book as a whole comes at the expense of Elvis and what I mean by that is that Suzanne Finstad is not someone who has his best interest at heart (I mean look at what she has said in some of these recents documentaries about Elvis) and in order to push her narrative that Priscilla was some fourteen-year-old s*xual deviant, she has made some incredibly inflammatory statements about their relationship, and it literally starts with the title of her book (referring to Priscilla as Elvis’ “child bride”)
And the main reason as to why I cannot comprehend how fans praise this book is that Finstad goes with the story that Currie Grants tells, which includes him saying that Elvis (24) and Priscilla (14) were having penetrative intercourse after their 3rd or 4th date ⬇️
Tumblr media
excerpt is from “Child Bride” by Suzanne Finstad
So this is why I tend to cringe when I see other fans praise this book… I know it’s not their intention but they are inadvertently promoting a falsehood that says Elvis was committing statutory r*pe against a fourteen year old Priscilla
Not only does that go against what Priscilla and others have said about the physical relationship she had with Elvis in Germany, but it goes against the pattern that Elvis followed for almost every single (long-term) relationship prior to Priscilla and even after
A girl that Elvis deemed “special” or in other words- good enough to marry- was not a girl that Elvis was going to have penetrative s*x with, especially not when he had the more worldly starlets of Hollywood and the showgirls of Germany and Paris at his disposal
PRISCILLA PRESLEY: “In the past, he said that he wanted a virgin (to marry)”
DEBRA PAGET: “He always said he’d marry a virgin”
LAMAR FIKE: “Elvis respected virginity. He used to tell Alan, “I’ll never break a virgin. There are too many whores around”
We saw this with Dixie Locke, we saw this with June Juanico and Anita Wood, all of whom, in their many years of dating him never had penetrative s*x
We even saw this with women like Linda Thompson and Ginger Alden who he waited several months with before consummating
So because of that I have an incredibly hard time believing that Elvis would abandon his morals after just 3 or 4 dates with Priscilla, especially when he was having s*x with age appropriate girls like Elizabeth Mansfield, who often took Priscilla’s place in Elvis’ bed after she left
Another issue I have with “Child Bride” is that she has often either misquoted people, or written things that contradict what they have said to other biographers- basically many things haven’t added up when cross referencing between books
I have mentioned this one before but it is just so blatant, that I feel compelled to mention it again ⬇️
So here we have Joe Esposito re-telling a throwaway comment about Priscilla made by Elvis
Tumblr media
excerpt is from “Good Rockin’ tonight” by Joe Esposito
And then here we have Suzanne Finstad’s retelling of that comment, where she has misquoted Esposito in order to make Priscilla out to be the s*xual aggressor
Tumblr media
excerpt is from “Child Bride” by Suzanne Finstad
Instances like this give me extreme pause when determining if a biographer could be trusted or not- and when I was reading through her book again this comment about Sheila Ryan nearly made me bust out laughing
Tumblr media
excerpt is from “Child Bride” by Suzanne Finstad
“Sheila never had an orgasm when she was with Elvis”… like are we talking about the same Sheila Ryan or-? ⬇️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
excerpt is from “Baby let’s play house” by Alanna Nash
All in all, “Child Bride” definitely makes for an interesting read (mainly the second half of the book) but it’s one that I will probably never pick up again as I cannot get over Currie Grant’s involvement, especially his claims about Priscilla and Elvis that are completely unfounded
Scandal sells quite frankly and I no longer underestimate what people will say for money, ESPECIALLY when it comes to Elvis- I mean look at the claims made by Dee Stanley who got a whopping $100,000 from the National Enquirer to tell stories about a woman she never even met (Gladys)
So I would not be surprised in the least if Currie has been handsomely compensated for selling his stories to biographers like Finstad, because again, scandal sells, and him approaching Priscilla first isn’t nearly as page-turning as Priscilla offering up s*x in order to meet Elvis

She always seemed a little tentative, a little frightened. She was sweet and lovely, and I never heard her say a bad word about anybody, but she was not a boisterously happy person. She was kind of delicate, I always felt she was vulnerable, and sensitive,- which she was. Bev Long on Natalie Wood.

I watched the film Priscilla last night.
Tumblr media
I mainly watched it because Sofia Coppola directed it. I honestly have no interest in Priscilla Beaulieu or her bastardizing the Presley name. Goodness knows she's been using the Presley name for 47 years. What she seems to forget is that we know she and Elvis were divorced and he was engaged to another woman at the time of his death.
With that in mind, I knew there was going to be some pretty colors and cool aesthetics throughout the movie. I've been a fan of Sophia's since the 90's. I love her films in general.
Having watched Priscilla, I now know why Elvis Presley's daughter Lisa Marie hated this movie. She made it be known just how much she hated it right up to her death last year. Not even Lisa's daughter Riley attended the premiere to support this movie. That alone is very telling.
Adding on, Lana Del Rey didn't give this film a song of hers despite having over 1,000 songs still in her vault. If there was ever a person to write a perfect theme song for Priscilla, it would be Lana.
Lana literally blew Sofia Coppola off with an I'm too busy excuse. Tell me you want nothing to do with a movie, without telling me you want nothing to do with a movie.
The movie was pretty boring and awful. The storyline is hogwash. It was 'pretty', I give it that. That's the magic of Sofia Coppola.
Do yourself a favor and read Child Bride by Suzanne Finstad. You will get to read the real story behind Priscilla and Elvis that they never show in any of these films.
Elvis comes across really bad. I'm not saying he was perfect. God knows he had issues, like messing around with a 14 year old girl - but this movie wasn't it.
If you seen the 1988 version of Priscilla, it is basically the same as this movie. Even some scene had the same dialogue. If you haven't seen it, here you go -
youtube
There's nothing more to really add.
I can't believe Sofia actually wasted her talents on this boring story that's was already told in books and in a 1988 TV movie. Had she told the story using Suzanne's Finstad book instead of Priscilla's, this film would have been a little more accurate and a lot more interesting.
I give Priscilla 5/10.

Cant wait to hear your thoughts on "Priscilla "! I enjoyed it. Did you ever read her book Elvis and Me? I highly recommend it!
I just got home ! I'm having my tea and ruminating. ☕︎
Overall, I thought it was fine. But I have to say I'm a little disappointed. I suppose I ruined it for myself prematurely by reading Suzanne Finstad's book many months prior. This movie could have been something truly interesting if it hadn't played everything so safe.
There is some serious meat to sink your teeth into when it comes to Priscilla as an individual. And yet, the film starts a day before she meets Elvis and ends the day she leaves him.
Grousing aside, I think the leads did a good job with what they were given ! Unfortunately the rest of the cast are victims of the 'looks like they've seen an air fryer' plague.

ahhh no way i feel like you have so much elvis knowledge under your belt already!! like i said the other day, i love reading the little easter eggs you leave in your stories!
if we’re talking books about elvis’s relationships then obviously the most comprehensive one is alanna nash’s ‘baby let’s play house’ (you can def find this one online free). some people don’t like it because they view it as sensationalism but it does go into almost every single relationship he had with a woman so it’s an interesting read as far as that is concerned. she’s also written three? other books about/relevant to him, and i’d say to give those a read, too. (side bar—for more info on his relationship with priscilla obviously her book is a must-read, but i’d also recommend ‘child bride’ by suzanne finstad. it doesn’t paint a great picture of priscilla, but it does give more insight into their relationship, and interviews people from priscilla’s past).
joyce bova’s ‘don’t ask forever’ is very interesting and sweet, and a little heart wrenching at times. they were together from 69 through to 72. she was actually the reason he flew to DC when the infamous nixon visit happened. it’s so much wilder than just him going to the white house 😭 he comes across as a deeply emotional man who at times felt too much and had a bit of a selfish streak, which is unfortunate but true of him.
linda’s book is one of my favourites and i always cry reading it, and as much as i don’t like her, ginger’s book does lend a look into the last year of his life. anita’s book also lends some insight.
‘are you lonesome tonight’ by lucy de barbin gives insight into a teenage elvis. ‘elvis and gladys’ by elaine dundy obviously discusses his relationship with his mother, but i think understanding that is integral to understanding *him* and how he navigated these relationships with women.
you’ve already mentioned guralnick and i think any of his books are required reading for elvis fans tbh.
some others you might find interesting (though aren’t about his romantic life specifically) is ‘the jewish world of elvis presley’ by roselle kline chartock and larry geller’s book. elvis confided so much in larry and it’s sad to see how outside forces were working to rip them apart, basically.
there’s just so many books on elvis, i couldn’t even possibly begin to name them all, but these are some i def recommend.
Seriously you are one of the people I think about when I write. I am here too study this man like my life depends on it, knowing him more and more just makes me so happy, and I think its fucking beautiful to have someone notice it.... its a pleasure loop for me.....
I have the Guralnick, Nash and then Priscilla's books and I ... ahem... did obtain them online.... but I feel like we are doing a public service publishing this list.. i had heard of child bride, and maybe the jewish one to, but some of the others i hadn't... jerry's book is on my list to, i started reading george's but something about it turned me off... maybe it just seemed obsequious to me... but I suppose it would be good to read, its at the bottom of the list.... honestly, the books by the women in his life appeal to me quite a lot....
thanks sweet love,
xoxox norah

RETROCRUSH: Birthday boy William Hopper (1/26/1915 -3/6/1970)
Born into a theatrical family, Bill was the son of actor DeWolf Hopper and actress-turned-gossip-columnist Hedda Hopper. He was best known as affable private detective Paul Drake on TV's PERRY MASON (1957-1966). He also had a supporting role in REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (1955) as the father of Natalie Wood. (Accoding to Wood biographer Suzanne Finstad, Wood shared a brief but intesne romance with Hopper's future PERRY MASON co-star Raymond Burr.) Bill fought in the U.S. Navy during WWII, earning a Bronze Star and other decorations, and also served in the OSS, the precursor to today's CIA.

I’d recommend you stay away from Joel Williamson, Albert Goldman and Suzanne Finstad’s books on him as well, as all contain serious misinformation.
thank you!
i have read quite a few books and i'm very picky about elvis books, so i know which ones to stay away from but i appreciate your take on it as well! personally, i don't really like books from journalists anyways (though i do like guralnick), but in general i prefer to read stories from those who have actually been in elvis' personal life.
which one is your favorite el book, nonnie?

People wanna know what really happened between Elvis and Priscilla? Read Childbride by Suzanne Finstad and prepare to take a dosis of reality and take trip through Priscilla’s creepy mind.
Seriously, it’s one of the most, if not the most, reliable sources of Elvis you can find.
Yeah exactly.

God I wish. I think young Janice is one of the most beautiful women of all time.
Ok this is a really loose interpretation of Celeb bio but my two favorite books of all time are actually Blonde by Joyce Carol Oats and Queenie by Michael Korda (based on the life of Merle Oberon) I love when books use stars to deconstruct hollywood personas and myths.
Actual Bios: Eve's Hollywood, anything abt Jackie Susann or Jayne Mansfield, Child Bride by Suzanne Finstad, Edie: American Girl

I AGREE SO MUCH ABOUT CHILD BRIDE. i went into it knowing nothing about the author, and in the forward shes really emphasizing how crazily obsessed she was with priscilla so i guess i was expecting it to be a sympathetic view of her😭 definitely not. what is suzzanes problem dear lord. shes so convinced and desperate to tell you that priscilla was some evil teenaged succubus out for rockstar blood. jesus christ. like girl even if she actually was who gives a shit????? same goes for currie grant. i dont care if he showed the author concrete evidence on a golden platter that he was telling the truth. hes just such an obvious sleazeball. just disgusting……. and she dedicates like 300 chapters to him saying over and over again that he fucked 14yo priscilla and that she was into it. babe they couldve had a steamy decade-long affair and NOBODY would care because he is literally just some random creep ass loser 13 years older than her. and when it comes to his attempted rape of her hes literally like “no i didnt try to rape her i just [decribes attempting to rape her]”. i really dont know suzzanes backstory but she is insane.
but uh. anyways that aside i did enjoy parts of the book for the more in depth view of the story. like suzzanne has such intense bias that really shows throughout but even with that it was still a great way to understand some of the situations a little better… i wish elvis and me was a little more detailed but i can appreciate how and why it is. and i am strangely curious about the actual nature of priscilla and curries relationship (i dont think they ever had consensual sex but i do believe he attacked her before elvis left germany and that leaves me curious as to why she still hung around him afterwards... i.e. those pictures of her to send to elvis that he took)
sorry for the huge wall of text im just.... very .. intrigued? by the book? its just so bizarre and raises a lot of questions lol.
Tumblr media
“Currie’s like “No I didn’t try to r*pe her I just [describes atttempting to r*pe her]”
YES THANK YOU!!
if I could, in my own words, summarize the transcript of the conversation between Priscilla & Currie it would be this ⬇️
Currie: I didn’t r*pe you
Priscilla: You forced yourself on me
Currie: I didn’t force anything, you just weren’t into it
Priscilla: So you didn’t try to kiss me?
Currie: Well yeah I was trying to kiss you, you just wouldn’t kiss me back. You were very cold
again that was just my own words so not the actual transcript but that is exactly what I got out of that conversation- which is Currie denying he forced anything on her while simultaneously describing just how unresponsive she was to his advances, so THANK YOU for articulating that perfectly
He is an absolute sleaze-ball as you said, and clearly did not realize he was incriminating himself throughout that whole exchange
like even if Currie’s version of the events were true (I highly doubt it), he still committed statutory r*pe. Perhaps Suzanne and him don’t understand the age of consent but a fourteen year old girl cannot consent to intercourse, so anything he may or may not have actually done to her is still R*PE, whether she seemed willing or not. I’m completely abhorred that a biographer would give a man like that such a large platform and not only that, but agree/go with the story he tells- I’m sickened by it
and god, his reasoning as to why he wouldn’t need to r*pe Priscilla is just the most insane thing I’ve ever read ⬇️
“I had at least ten girls that I could call any night and go have sex with them,” countered Currie. “I’m not bragging—at least ten. I didn’t need to rape anybody ”
excerpt is from “Child Bride” by Suzanne Finstad
okay like?? Ted Bundy had a longtime girlfriend and yet he still went out and s*xually assaulted and murdered women… what’s your point, Currie?
what also bothers me is that Suzanne Finstad is sitting on the full audio tapes of that conversation between Priscilla and Currie, and knowing her history of misquoting people and writing things that don’t line up with other testimonies, I wouldn’t be surprised in the very least if parts of that tape have been conveniently left out, or transcribed wrong, as she converted it from audio to text
like the whole 1961 photoshoot, as you mentioned, is something that I just wish I could hear Priscilla explain for herself
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Priscilla Presley and Currie Grant in 1961
It does raise the question if what she said transpired was true why would she ever want to be alone with Currie again, and better yet, why would Elvis willingly put her in a situation like that?
Especially when he was aware of the attempted r*pe ⬇️
MARTY LACKER: “There was a guy who used to bring Priscilla around to Elvis’s house some, over there in Germany. He would take her home to her parents’ place, and then he’d go back to the barracks. Well, he was a scumbag. He was using cute little girls to get into the house, to be around Elvis. And he tried to put the make on Priscilla one night when he took her home. She says in her book that he tried to rape her. But he didn’t succeed. Elvis told us about it, himself”
excerpt is from “Elvis and the Memphis Mafia” by Alanna Nash
The only explanation in my mind that makes sense is that perhaps Currie Grant was Elvis’ only remaining contact in Germany- or at least the only person in contact with Priscilla- and since he was so desperate to see her again, maybe thought that the reward outweighed the risk
And obviously a 15-year-old Priscilla was still reeling over him leaving Germany and would likely agree to anything to please him…plus since it was Elvis who asked Currie to take the photos, maybe she thought if Elvis trusted him to do that, she could trust him as well ?
And although I doubt she intended too, Suzanne inadvertently said something similar when trying to do one of those logical fallacies that she does throughout the duration of “Child Bride” ⬇️
“Priscilla, despite her claim that Currie tried to rape her, was thrilled to oblige, “desperate” for word from Elvis, through Currie”
excerpt is from “Child Bride” by Suzanne Finstad
I feel like Suzanne is basically answering the dilemma herself despite her attempt to point out the inconsistency in Priscilla’s behavior (her being afraid of Currie, but also being around him)
Priscilla was willing to be photographed by her attempted assaulter as she was desperate for contact from Elvis and Currie just happened to be that link between them
and I have to say, my original response to the ask that I received about “Child Bride” was something that I was worried about posting as many of the more passionate anti-Priscilla crowd tend to treat it like it’s their Bible but WHEW- I am beyond relieved that so many people have also seen just how outrageous that book is, especially the narrative that Suzanne Finstad goes with- like as you said, trying to make a fourteen-year-old Priscilla out to be some “teenaged succubus” LMAOOO (that took me out 💀)
I honestly consider myself to be Priscilla-neutral despite what some people assume of me based on some my posts 🤧 and so because of that, I am very open to reading and discussing the valid criticisms against her HOWEVER- I have no time in my day to take someone like Currie Grant seriously so that is why the first half of “Child Bride” (chapters about Germany and what fourteen-year-old Priscilla may or may not have done) are just what ruin the whole book for me
And it’s a shame because again, there are some very valid things that Suzanne points out about Priscilla, especially the things that were left out of “Elvis and me”; like her inconsistencies in recalling certain events, her sometimes questionable character (treatment of others), her possible greed (suing and more suing) and the biggest one to me- her involvement in Scientology… but all of that is just dampered by Suzanne’s god awful commentary and god awful judgement
also girl please do not apologize for sending this in- I sincerely thank you for adding to the conversation about this book as I think these kinds of discussions are so beneficial and I’m just truly grateful to be able to have them with y’all- I’ve fr learned so much from your guys’ insight
and since there is such a surplus of information about Elvis (and Priscilla), I feel like the best way to navigate through it all is by breaking it down like this, and so if y’all ever want to talk about another book feel free to send in your thoughts <3!!!

Natalie Wood (1938-1981).
American actress.
.
Wood began her acting career at age 4 and was given a co-starring role at age 8 in Miracle on 34th Street (1947). As a teenager, she earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), followed by a role in John Ford's The Searchers (1956). Wood starred in the musical films such as West Side Story (1961), and received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performances in Splendor in the Grass (1961) and Love with the Proper Stranger (1963).
She had a brief relationship with Elvis Presley in the 1950s.
.
Suzanne Finstad's 2001 biography of Wood alleges that she was raped by a powerful actor when she was 16. In 2018, Lana Wood said during a 12-part podcast about her sister's life that the attack had occurred inside the Chateau Marmont during an audition.
.
During the 1970s, Wood began a hiatus from film and had a child with husband Robert Wagner, whom she had previously married and divorced. She had a brief relationship with Governor Jerry Brown but Wagner and Wood remarried after she divorced her second husband, Richard Gregson, with whom she had her first daughter. She acted in only two feature films throughout the decade, but appeared slightly more often in television productions, including a remake of the film From Here to Eternity (1979) for which she received a Golden Globe Award. Wood's films represented a "coming of age" for her and for Hollywood films in general. Critics have suggested that her cinematic career represents a portrait of modern American womanhood in transition, as she was one of the few to take both child roles and those of middle-aged characters.
.
Wood drowned off Catalina Island on November 29, 1981, at age 43. The events surrounding her death have been explained by conflicting witness statements, prompting the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, under the instruction of the coroner's office, to list her cause of death as "drowning and other undetermined factors" in 2012. In 2018, Wagner was named as a person of interest in the ongoing investigation into her death.
.
Famous movies:
Rebel Without a Cause
Splendor in the Grass
West Side Story
Miracle on 34th Street
The Searchers

Natalie never accused Kirk Douglas. it comes from this site: gawker*com/5893793/did-robert-downey-jr-really-just-accuse-kirk-douglas-of-a-brutal-rape
People are continuously linking/referring to this article to prove Kirk’s innocence or whatever on here and twitter. I’m sorry but regardless of what RDjr said, this is not the reason as to why the classic hollywood community and Natalie fans alike, are accusing him of being a rapist.
I’ve been on this site for well over a decade, enveloped in Classic Hollywood cinema and drama, galore! I’ve heard it all. I’ve read soooo many books, articles, etc. on many of my favourite stars and you bet your ass, this case was talked about to DEATH at one stage when I was most active on this site.
You are correct in saying that Natalie never accused him. Why? I can’t actually believe I have to explain why but here we go...She was a 16 year old child, this was 1956 when it happened during an interview at Chateau Marmont. She confided in her mother on the drive home that she was raped repeatedly for hours. It was her mother who told her not to piss off her rapist.
Her sister has spoken of that attack a few times. She knows who did it, as does Suzanne Finstad (author of her bio). Both women said they will reveal the rapist’s name after he dies.
How do we know it was Kirk though? We know that there were apparently 3 Hollywood actors at that meeting...John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and ??? (I actually can’t remember who but I THINK it was Burt Lancaster). Both men are dead, they never came forward to say it was either of them after their deaths. That leaves Kirk Douglas.
To add to this, I read a long time ago that Dennis Hopper and Jackie Estes accused him of raping her. They actually named him. Whether she confided in them at some stage or not, I’m not sure of. But as far as I can remember, he never defended himself or denied it.We know from the man himself that he liked brutal sex, that he physically abused women, and that he liked young girls. You can argue that none of that makes someone exclusively a rapist but he sounds like a sick fuck to me.
Jean Spangler too because the moron (Kirk) rang the police to say it wasn’t him. The police never suspected it was him in the first place. The whole story is on her wiki if you want a brief read. Did I also mention that she’s been missing for 70 years?
So please. Continue to defend him. Go search for proof of a 1950′s rape case. Even if you truly, deeply believe he is not a rapist, don’t forget his own admittance in his book over his vile and abusive behaviour towards women.
Don’t message me again. Anything you want to read is online. Visit Natalie Wood blogs and ask questions, they are far more equipped to explain the details than I am, that’s for sure.
And please. For the love of everything that’s good....don’t jump in and defend someone who is a rapist. Even if you love them and don’t want to hear it. Seriously, it’s fucking cringe.

ooooh, what's the dirt on kirk douglas?
There have long been rumors that Kirk raped Natalie Wood.  From what I’ve read about Natalie, there was general speculation about her being attacked as a teenager for years--which honestly checks, considering the fact that she was a child actress who was pushed in the industry from a very young age.
Her biographer, Suzanne Finstad then said that the rape specifically happened when Natalie was sixteen and the details/timeline made people think it was Kirk.  This was then backed up by an anonymous “insider” a while back--apparently in 2012.  So nothing solid, but.... it’s Hollywood.
Generally speaking, Kirk is also a dog, so I guess that didn’t help matters...  His wife accepted his many affairs, apparently, but that along with what he himself would call a VERY bad temper.... just didn’t help the rumors.
Then there’s the Jean Spangler case.  Which is more fringe, but I will always wonder about it personally.  Jean was an aspiring actress and young single mother who was an extra on the set of a movie Kirk was in around the time that she disappeared. She’s never been found, and the case will probably remain unsolved--but one of the only traces of evidence left was a note in her purse that read: “Kirk: Can’t wait any longer, Going to see Dr. Scott.  It will work better this way while mother is away.”
I mean..
Kirk called the police unprovoked to deny knowing Jean (which is, as someone who is not at all a pro but does have an interest in true crime, not great) and then when pressed admitting to knowing her and “kidding with her”.  Jean’s friends alleged that she was pregnant and had been discussing an abortion when she disappeared, which would check with the note.
Listen--who knows what happened.  But I don’t think that’s a GREAT sign.
