The Bullywugs

Unlike the other peoples of Mesmia, the bullywugs were not created by the gods. History tells us that they appeared as they are, fully formed, with no direct links to the gods whatsoever. Some human scholars, perhaps with a bias towards the Fallen Gods, theorize that the swamps and mires within the Cresic region birthed the bullywugs from the latent magic instilled by the goddess Temera. The bullywugs, however, say the first of their kin simply willed themselves into existence and rose up from the waters to become the second people of Mesmia.

Through their deep connection with the natural environment they hail from, bullywugs were some of the earliest practitioners of certain schools of druidic and wytchly magic, and their herbalists went on to inspire the first alchemists.

Though they predominantly reside in the Sudvee Marshes, Tricaster Forest, and the surrounding areas throughout Cresic, many bullywugs live across the varied coasts of the Torvugg Bay and as far away as the island of Lidora. Their societies tend to be highly communal, treating all its members as family and raising their children collectively.

One of the most storied parts of bullywug history were the wars they fought against the hags and boges that attempted to lay claim to the Sudvee Marshes in the aftermath of the God War. This period lasted for over two hundred years, and though the bullywugs were ultimately successful, it saw the ever bitter boges and devious hags create numerous horrors such as the bandhobbs, bog bodies, catoblepas, froghemoths, hex dragons, sleeches, and swampgas shades. These vile fey have long abandoned the area, but many of their creations still haunt the marshes, and bullywug elders tell the young ones tales of these monsters to keep them from straying too far into the darker places beyond their villages.

For years whenever people saw unidentifed flying objects the government officials would seemingly brush it off and call it swamp gas. People took this as them discrediting the sighting, but in reality they were saying it was probably one of these things. SPOOKLIGHTS CLUSTER AND POSSIBLE CAUSES - As part of my phenomenological location documentation projects, I do a considerable amount of research, mapping and GPS positioning of alleged anomalies, legends and lore. In doing so, I often discover some patterns of interest - such as in this case. Shown are the positions of three culturally-significant luminous spooklight encounter spots in central Florida (Keller, Bereah, Heard Bridge Roads). A cluster of anomalies is intriguing, but what is really interesting is what is found between them: industrial phosphate mining/plants and swamps. one of my favorite colors and one of my least favorite colors!! i’m happy with how they both turned out though- i’m finding that a lot of colors I don’t like are still kind of interesting to try to recreate. 

i was referencing the swamp gas techo very heavily, since I think its one of the better swamp gas pets (i think it might also be the first swamp gas pet, which might explain some of that)

i wanted to give the disco centibyte shutter shades, but those didn’t get big until the 80s, so i ended up just leaving it- it’s already pretty busy as-is, with all those patterns going on. also i just realized i accidentally used my fursona’s color scheme, even though i was literally eyedropping colors i liked from site disco pets, whoOPS
