The Daily Postcard. March 20 2023, First Day of Spring…Yeah, right.

I’m back on this blog. Completely forgot that I even had it. Remember now that I was approaching it like a newsletter. I have more autonomy over this than FB. I think. Not sure if i’m going to continue with it. Let’s give it a shot. March is hard. Started my walking routine again. Took two weeks off from routine to rest legs from Florida drive. They no longer hurt. I walked to CCR’s Chronicles. Love that album. Rewarded myself with a used copy of Edward Rutherfurd’s “The Princes of Ireland, Part of the Dublin Saga. If you’ve never read Rutherfurd’s work, you’re missing out. I’m working at AMH tonight. Usually, Monday is the beginning of my nights off. Covering an overnight shift for a co-worker and digging the OT. So much to do today. We’re down a car, so I have a lot of chauffeuring to do for fam too. Feel a nap attack coming, sitting in a sunbeam at the food court of the Aviation Mall. Sunshine make me all woozy and content. Trying to motivate myself to go out to the parking lot and drive home. Also thinking there’s an English muffin with peanut butter and cinnamon calling to me. Dogs will probably help me eat it. Been unsweetened Monster free for 7 days. Next, weaning myself to 1 Celsius a day. Eventually, I’ll be down to unsweetened Lipton ice tea and black coffee. Went cold turkey before and I was miserable. You would think I’d get some time to be able to kick back and relax after obtaining the Master Brewer rank and then doing moderately well at Pennsic to boot. But no.

As soon as the last of the Pennsic garb was washed and folded and all the camping equipment was put away, it was September and my Son had his Eagle Ceremony, then we went to Endewearde Hunt, then was the Barony of Stonemarche’s 30th or so Birthday.

This doesn’t sound so busy but in between all this stuff my job is getting busier because they’ve again decided to change the way we handle our work and my wife tells me we haven’t seen the inlaws in a while so we have to do that as well.

That last part actually has a lot of benefits. My wife’s parents have a huge piece of property and with it come a lot of Elderberries and Apples.

Yes it’s September ushering in Fall and fresh fruit is literally falling off the tree at me. 18lbs of Highbush Cranberries harvested by myself over an hour from a giant bush in my Mother-In-Law’s backyard. Crab Apples and regular Apples growing from various trees all over the property and a few drops from the neighbor’s yard as well. So we’ve got 2 Carboys full of Highbush Cranberry Wine and a Carboy with a mixed wild apple cider later to be sweetened with my signature Maple Syrup adjunct.

But wait there’s more! The day in October I was going to work on brewing, my neighbor also offered me most of the peaches from his peach tree. Apparently his wife is tired of peaches and wanted someone to come take away most of them.

Currently I have 1 carboy mostly full of English style peach juices slowly fermenting away and today at lunch I hand crushed the remaining peaches with my trusty brewing stick and added yeast in the hopes of creating a more full bodied peach wine. These may end up getting blended if one is too weak and the other too thick. Time will tell.

Alas, October brings brightly colored leaves and the smell of coffee filled with Pumpkin Spices; which means Stingy Jack (my Robust Pumpkin Porter) will rear his thick foamy head after the sacrifice of one Princess………Pumpkin.

Such a beautiful sight to see as it percolates in it’s fermenter.

With the frost soon coming, I felt it was probably prudent to harvest the last of the long suffering rhubarb and see if I can’t get a late season batch of Rhubarb wine going to guarantee that next years Great Northeastern War has enough beverage to get us through and maybe even Harper’s Retreat and next years Endewearde Hunt.

Last but by no means least, due to the success of my Roman Wine at Pennsic this year, I had to go back and get more grapes to start next years batch of Roman wine. I am making three batches this time. The first is a Shiraz Grape, the second is a combination of 3 different types of red grapes and the third is the remains of both grapes squeezed together for the secondary pressing I am referring to as Slave Wine

At this point my kitchen now has about 8 containers happily bubbling along with 3 wine vats in the basement and 2 carboys clarifying in the backside of the basement. This doesn’t include the 7 out of 8 kegs I currently have full of beverage ready for Birka 2020.

Yes, I’m maxed out and have no other containers available for brewing at this time. People need to drink some of this stuff before I can think of making anything else. man i just hate chocolate now.. it was never my favorite but the older i get the more i dislike sweetened chocolate as the main part of a food but i’ve ALWAYS hated dark chocolate so i guess i just have to come to terms with the fact that i do not like chocolate anymore

chocolate cake is good, and choco chip cookies are good but pushing it... all those fb videos of people opening fancy desserts filled with melted chocolate just make me want to throw up very genuinely

you know what i do like tho? dutch process black cocoa. like, the kind they use for oreos. that is a better flavor imo.

Young cuckoo had just come back from the last class of the week. It was a Friday, which meant the weekend had arrived. Momma and poppa cuckoo was having a hard job putting food on the table for the family. Young cuckoo noticed this and it made her feel bad. She was thinking of ways to help her family and then suddenly she got an idea of how she could do that. "Mom, dad, I have an idea of how to make enough money to pay all our bills", Young cuckoo told her parents. "How young cuckoo, you're still a baby? Leave the thinking to us, your job is to learn everything you can in school and be well educated so you don't end up like us", Momma and poppa cuckoo said. But young cuckoo wouldn't listen, she was quite adamant, she refused to go anywhere till her parents agreed. After a lot of pestering, and when they found out she wouldn't go away if they didn't listen to her, they agreed to listen to her. "Okay dear, let's hear your idea". "Thank you, mum, dad. Well, I read in my business books that you should make use of everything in your surrounding to satisfy human wants as well as well as make a profit". "Hmmmn! That's nice", Momma cuckoo said. "Yes, it is mum. We just have to be determined to get it done". "Okay, so what's the life for cuckoo asked. Young cuckoo's parents discussed the plan. "Mum, you are the only one in the forest that makes the most amazing lemon pie and dad, you also make a mean lemonade." "Yes dear, but that's only for our family." "I know mum and dad, but have you ever thought of selling it out?" Young cuckoo asked. "No dear because no one will buy it." "Have you ever sold it and no one bought it?" "No dear, we haven't tried yet," cuckoo said. "Can you at least promise you'll try?" Young cuckoo asked. "Okay dear, we'll try your idea." "Thank you, mum, dad." Young cuckoo said and hugged them. The next day, very early in the morning, the cuckoo family all went to the lemon tree and picked three full baskets of ripe lemon. On getting home, they squeezed the lemon of its juices. Momma cuckoo mixed the lemon juice into her pies and added honey to sweeten it while Poppa cuckoo mixed the lemon juice with honey and boy was it sweet! Young cuckoo not wanting to be left behind made Popsicle from lemon juice mixed with honey. The sun was so hot now and all the animals were thirsty. "Come one, come all and taste the best lemon-made drink ever, it won't only taste good, it'll also quench your thirst and leave you feeling Ahhh! Satisfied." Poppa cuckoo said drawing attention and customers. He continued saying, "because this is our first sale, there is going to be a discount on all the products, hurry up and grab yours." All the animals were curious, they knew that lemon was sour but those lemon pastries and drinks looked delicious. They all decided to try it. As they ate, drank and licked, the air was filled with Oooohs! Aaaahs! Refreshing! and Delicious! It was the best lemon products they had ever had, and this was all thanks to a young cuckoo, who believed in herself and knew that knowledge was power only when applied in action. On cerebral palsy and artificial sweeteners

In my twenties, I was warned to avoid Equal and Sweet N Low by my husband's mother, whose youngest child has Cerbral Palsy like me. Until now I had forgotten why, and someone in the CP support group on FB reminded me why a lot of us develop headaches and stomach sensitivity.

"I didn't want to go into detail because some people love their artifical sweeteners and I didn't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it is, from what I have read, potentially neurotoxic because it becomes toxic when ingested (due to our body temperatures being higher than the toxicity temperature). It is wild."

I've forced myself to tolerate Splenda, aka sucralose, because of the small amounts in many beverages I refuse to quit, like Monster White Dragon Tea. I could probably handle a lot more but I would rather not push it, which is one reason I instinctively don't do it every day.

Having cerebral palsy plus epilepsy plus autistic dyspraxia and other autistic neurologies plus ADHD is already playing with fire, and even though I've entered my forties, I am not quite that ready to add to the fire too much.

Consuming wood alcohol sugars like erithrytol, stevia, etc, are probably completely safe for a lot of people, especially abled and neurotypical. This is what we mean by typical, average, normal with nothing diverging from the standard and conventional.

The biggest issue here is how cerebral palsy in aging adults is still poorly studied. Up until a couple of years ago I don't think anyone understood because we were expected to not live past thirty. Luckily that idea is outdated, same as the thought that autistics might die before age thirty (which by itself is only true because we are often murdered before that age, too)

I learned a hell of a lot in these exclusive Cerebral Palsy groups. We really have needed to be our own advocates. Family members who literally try to say they know what it is like to have cerebral palsy are scary.
