Describe the Swiss International Style and the Swiss Punk style and discuss what caused the shift from one to the other.

The Swiss Punk style grew out of the Swiss International style as a means of breaking away from the strict rules and grids. Design that was once standardized and minimalistic became experimental, grunge and chaotic.

Swiss International Style The Swiss style originated in the 1940‘s and 1950‘s in Switzerland, and “was the basis of much of the development of graphic design during the mid 20th century.” (Flask, 2010) The Swiss International style was based around grids, sans serif type and neutrality and the notion that “typography should be totally clear allowing no distraction from the content” (Stock-Allen, 2011)

Josef Müller-Brockmann led the ‘Zurich School of Arts and Krafts’ design school and was one of four artists and designers who launched the ‘Neue Grafik’, which was an influential magazine. “The magazine was characterized by exclusiveness, consistency and lack of compromise.” (Hollis, 2001, p.153) The magazine and it’s designers were committed to producing work which was based around technical and geometrical drawings, as well as heavily cropped photography which had a dramatic affect. Furthermore, the dramatic affect of the photography was emphasized by being kept in black and white, and by the use of diagonal axes. 

The typeface of choice during this time was ‘Akzidenz’, and later on ‘Neue Haas Grotesk’ appeared, designed by  Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann, and was a san-serif design that was eventually renamed to what we know today as ‘Helvetica’.

Swiss Punk/New Wave

Wolfgang Weingart, a German graphic designer, is known to be the founder of the post-modern style; Swiss Punk which originated in the 1970’s. Weingart’s style grew from the idea of breaking all of the swiss style rules, such as paragraph indentations, letter spacing, typeface weight consistency and grids. He eventually became a teacher at Yale University which enabled him to “breathe new life into Swiss typography” (Aynsley, 2011, p.190) 

It has been argued that Weingart did not completely break free from the swiss style, as he used many principles from the swiss style, but rather “pushed its aesthetic limits.” (Eskilson, 2007, p.352) 

 “Whereas traditional Swiss typography mainly focused on the syntactic function, Weingart was interested in how far the graphic qualities of typography can be pushed and still retain its meaning. This is when the semantic function of typography comes in: Weingart believes that certain graphic modifications of type can in fact intensify meaning. “What's the use of being legible, when nothing inspires you to take notice of it?” (Stock-Allen, 2011)

The Swiss punk typographic style mirrored the music and fashion industry at that time. The 1980’s punk era saw fashion designers such as Vivienne Westwood, and bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Ramones. Music, fashion and graphic design was rebellious, energetic and anarchic. Graphic designers Jamie Reid, was a hugely iconic and influential designer who designed the designed the record cover sleeves, posters ad t-shirts for the Sex Pistols.
