kanan’s end credits var 1 (trans. by me)
what i really like about the opening of this cue is how the kiners start with a more sparse harmonization and then builds on each repetition by adding more in the inner voices... it’s a super neat effect! it’s a very stable harmonization too, going I--V7--V--I and repeat, with an added sixth in the V7. the ascending fifth in the mezzo voice in m3 is, imo, a deliberate reference to the star wars main title motif, esp since the kiners do a more specific main title quotation later in the cue, but it also decreases stress by returning us to the tonic. it’s a very stately moment, solemn yet joyful, lots of circular motion, returning to the center, life to death to life again.

What’s ahsoka’s music motif?
ok! so! it’s the flute melody right at the beginning of this track, the daaaaa-da-daaaaa, da da daaaaa-da-da-daaaa, the sad kinda pentatonic kinda sounding thing
what’s super exciting is that ahsoka’s theme also plays at the beginning of the new clone wars trailer, but in the piano, not on the flute. that means that this is an entirely new score, not recycled music that has already been produced, it was written SPECIFICALLY for this trailer, which is dave and kevin’s way of acknowledging ahsoka as THE BREAKOUT CHARACTER of the clone wars.
usually for sw trailers you get the opening fanfare or the force theme (as seen in the jedi fallen order trailer, at the veeeeery very end) so with this trailer coming out, balls to the wall, declaring this the AHSOKA TANO SHOW, rather than , like, the continuing adventures of anakin and obiwan. that means so much to me. aotc may have been my first sw experience but tcw was the firrst time i really understood and came to love the universe, and ahsoka was 100% a major driving force in that. so to see dave and kevin validating tf outta me is just!!!!!!! ugh!!!!!!!!

I WAS ABOUT TO HAVE A STROKE WHEN I SAW ONE OF THE TRACKS TITLED “EZRA RETURNS” AND THEN I REALIZED IT WAS FOR WHEN EZRA CAME BACK FROM TATOOINE SDFKLJSDFLJKSDFK
more seriously......... that track was written by david glen russell (not kiner) and while it is BEAUTIFUL... there’s no ezra’s theme. ?????????????? w

this track. oof. what a fascinating mix of timbres here. we’ve got:
the harp going ape
i think that’s a celeste or something going off on an ostinato?
super low sustained bass
the wolf theme high in the strings coupled with the brass blares for fear, then it relaxes into the lower register doubled by cellos and horns
those awesome col legno strings as they run through the plains
choral vocalises
the GORGEOUS confluence of cello/viola, flute, oboe? or clarinet? idk what the fuck instrument mixture it is but it SLAPS. and the parallel voice moving? yum
it’s so different. it’s bEYOND different. it takes you by the shirt and slaps you in the face with how different it is. it screams PAY ATTENTION AUDIENCE - and it’s a different that works. it’s not different for the sake of being different, and it’s like nothing else in the rest of the sw musical canon, let alone the goddamn show, let alone the goddamn season!
there is so much happening under the hood of this sequence. im in love

one of my favorite things about the rebels soundtrack is how kevin gets sonically closer and closer to the ot music. like the clone wars feels Very unique (which is not bad!! some clone wars music is fanastic) but it is pretty different from williams’ score (again, not inherently a bad thing) on the flip side of that, as the timeline gets closer and closer to the ot era, kevin starts to borrow more sounds directly from the soundtrack itself, like the tie fighter flight theme, the unused walker theme, more deliberate title fanfare, just the rebel fanfare itself! KEVIN!

interesting soundtrack things while writing this paper; john williams DID write a theme for maul i think... but kevin kiner wrote an entirely new one for him in rebels
i have to go through tcw again (oh nooo) to see if it shows up there but how INTERESTING! KEVIN WYD
also, maul’s rebels theme is... very similar to kevin’s inquisitors theme. ????????????H????

semi-related; i am floored by how kiner takes the force whistles and makes those into kanan’s theme, bc he ... rly didn’t have one in s1/2. seemingly weaker, he’s actually stronger than ever; he’s literally one with the force, even now... bye kill me

god i love the loth wolf music. kiner really outdid himself with this one. the loth wolf music is such a good development from the standard jw-type fare. kevin kiner if you’re reading this i want you to know i would die for your loth wolf music
