Long-term Review: Cardas Clear Light Speaker Cable

This ain’t your grandpa’s Cardas.

The year is... I can’t even remember, maybe 2012? I was writing for Bound for Sound magazine (BFS) and running my trusty Merlin TSM speakers with a variety of solid state amplifiers and cables, and while there was much to love about this setup, body and warmth were lacking. Merlin's brilliant and dearly-departed designer Bobby Palkovic never stopped reminding me his speakers were best with tube amps and Cardas cables (which he used internally and for jumpers) and he kept urging me to give them a try. I demurred, telling him I hadn’t been a fan of the “Cardas sound” in the past... but an encounter with a friend’s Quadlink 5C’s had me reconsidering. So I put in a call to Cardas to see what they recommended, and they were gracious enough to provide a pair of their recently-introduced Clear Light speaker cables.

The following years are a blur... BFS stopped publishing a short time later, and the Cardas review was put on hold. But I still kept using those cables, and after years of building guilt I finally sat down to do a write-up about them. Cardas, if you’re still listening - thank you for letting me hang onto them, and mea culpa. Better late than never, right...? 🙂

The Clear Light was introduced as a, well, lighter version of their high-end Clear cable. At the time, I believe it retailed around $900 a 1.5m pair - a bit less than half as much as its big brother. This put it in what I would call the “entry luxury” segment of cables, sorta like a BMW 3 series or Audi A4. The newest version of the cable is called the Clear Cygnus; from their website:

In 2017, Cygnus took the place of Clear Light, being the result of a redesign that turned out to be fitting of a new product launch. Cygnus, unlike its predecessor, can be internally bi-wired.

So this review is more than a bit late to the party, but my long-term experience with the Clear Light has been noteworthy and speaks to a fascinating evolution in the Cardas sound over the years.

Then...

Why hadn’t I been a fan of Cardas in the past? I had tried a few of their entry to mid-level cables - Twinlink, Quadlink, Hexlink, Golden Presence, probably others. Cardas had always been known for their smooth, relaxed character and synergy with tube equipment, neither of which are quite my cup of tea. Many of their older models also had quite high capacitance which IMO tended to kill the life of the sound with many components. So yeah, I had a bit of bias against the brand.

For reference, other cables I had tried with the Merlin speakers included the original AntiCables, the original Analysis Plus oval, Signal Cable, an older Synergistic reference cable, JPS Labs Ultraconductor and the BFS “Lowe’s Special” DIY cables which had handily bested many of the former. But it was always tricky with the Merlins and solid state amps - you wanted something that retained their speed, transparency and immediacy, but with sufficient midrange body and warmth. In terms of tonal balance, the Synergistic faired the best, and was what I was using when the Cardas arrived.

Dropping the Clear Lights into the system, at the time with an April Music Stello Ai500 integrated, quickly dispelled my biases. Cardas was not kidding with the model name - these were easily the most transparent and detailed cables I had yet heard in my system, with a judicious touch of the trademark Cardas warmth and body in the midrange that my system was craving. Most striking was the newfound sense of pulse and rhythm. Maybe this is what the Brits call PRAT, but it wasn’t about bass clarity or tautness per se; it was more about allowing the subtle undulations of an accompaniment to pulsate and flow in perfect balance with a tune.

A perfect example: the Adagio from Mozart "Gran Partita" wind serenade, made famous in the movie Amadeus. I still vividly recall putting on a favorite recording by the Berlin Philharmonic wind ensemble (Tidal) and being floated away by the lullaby-like quality of the accompaniment - the “rusty squeezebox” as Salieri calls it. The oboe solo was also more striking, breaths and phrases feeling more tactile and tone having a little more sheen. Bobby was right - his speakers really do click with Cardas wire, and I had never heard the TSM's sing so freely in my system.

Other material showed no lack of slam or extension either. Though the Merlins were light in the bass, their sealed-box design meant there's some meaningful output down to 40Hz, and the Clear Lights made the best of it with an articulate and balanced bottom end. Large orchestral works had nice scale and weight, and the soundstage was expansive and well-delineated - close-mic'ed material sounded up front and present while mid-hall orchestral recordings had plenty of ambience. And most importantly to me, there was none of the undue warmth and dullness that bothered me with past Cardas cables - leading edges were sharp and dynamics popped without overshooting. All in all, the Clear Lights were clearly (ha) the best speaker cables in my system to that date.

... and now.

Fast forward several years. The Merlins have been replaced by Audiovector SR 1 Avantgarde Arreté and Silverline SR17 Supreme, with a rotation of amps from Ayre, Bryston and Valvet. The front end has also been substantially upgraded with the PS Audio DirectStream DAC and Pass XP10 preamp, and competition at vastly different price points has arrived in the form of Audience Au24 SX ($3,290, 2.5m pair) and DH Labs Silver Sonic Q-10 Signature ($450, 8ft pair).

The Audience Au24 SX has a level of refinement that neither of the other cables can match, hardly surprising at 3x to 7x the price. It's oh-so-silky smooth, stripping away layers of noise and grain within and between the notes and leaving behind the purest, most natural instrumental timbres I've heard in my system. By comparison, the Cardas has a bit of a grittier texture, particularly in the upper midrange, and a more up-front presentation. With some speaker/amp combos this was beneficial - e.g. with the Silverline Minuet Grand ($1,999) and Ayre AX7e integrated, the Cardas struck just the right balance of body and presence, making the Audience sound a little too laid back by comparison. I also found the heavier 9.5AWG conductors of the Cardas allowed the Bryston 4B Cubed amp to get a better grip on the Audiovector SR 1 Avantgarde Arreté speakers ($5200) than the comparatively light-gauge Audience. Overall the Cardas put up a very respectable showing against the superb Audience cables, in line with my expectations given the price difference.

The DH Labs Q-10 was a fascinating and far closer comparison. The Q-10 is just as clean as the Cardas - perhaps even more so - with a slightly more direct character that is on the up-front side of neutral. Its silver-plated copper conductors give it extra sheen vs. the pure-copper Cardas and Audience, which could go in either direction depending on your system. With a mellow amp and a smooth speaker it could be just the thing to inject some life; but pairing with a hot tweeter and bright solid state amp could be downright painful. The Cardas feels like it would be more amenable to a wider range of systems, and it has a bit more midrange dimensionality and soundstage depth. The DH Labs counters with terrific bass punch and super-crisp transients that always sound controlled. Overall I had a slight preference for the Cardas in most setups, but the DH Labs hung in there pretty well and is a superb value.

Usage Notes

The Cardas is just thick enough to impress your audiophile friends and confuse your gardener without being unwieldy, and its rubber-finish jacket is flexible and easily handled. Over the course of years of heavy usage (lots of connect/disconnect cycles and being thrown around) it's held up well, the only obvious sign of wear being the conductors on one end starting to pull out of the collet - not particularly dangerous since all Cardas conductors are insulated litz (magnet) wire, but something you'll want to take care with. (I hear Cardas has excellent factory service, so likely they'd repair it at reasonable cost.)

My pair was terminated with Cardas's machined rhodium-plated spades. I have never been a fan of big audio jewelry connectors, preferring unassuming low-mass ones that ironically enough have become all the rage the last 10-15 years. That said, these spades are fantastic. They are the perfect shape and size to fit most any binding post I've come across, including those pesky EU-compliant ones, and for whatever reason - perhaps the rhodium plate and precise machining - they slide effortless in and out of binding posts and tighten more readily and securely than any other spade I've used. I always know I'm getting a secure fit, and I never have to fidget with or retighten them later as I do with most every other spade I've used. Bravo, Cardas.

Conclusion

I've had an extremely positive ownership experience with the Cardas Clear Light speaker cables over the years, and it remains a staple in my bin o' cables. They opened my ears to the virtues of the Cardas sound, delivering much of the brand's famed dimensionality, body and musical flow balanced with a high level of clarity, transparency and directness. While they had exceptional synergy with my Merlin speakers, they worked with a wide variety of gear and were a delight to handle. I would stick to using them with a system that's already fairly neutral and balanced - true to their name, they aren't going to obscure or romanticize anything. I haven't heard its successor, the Clear Cygnus, but I imagine it should deliver a similar if not greater level of listening satisfaction. Recommended!

Hanley says prices have been reduced for six of the nine new Camry variants while increases on the other three are outweighed by additional features.

For the new hybrid powertrain, with combined power output rising to 160kW, prices have been improved compared with the petrol variants and the market.

Camry SX and SL with the new 224kW, 362Nm V6 engine are just $4,000 more than their four-cylinder siblings.

A KTM 450 flat tracker built for a Dakar Rally racer

If you’re a custom builder, one of the most difficult briefs is for a race bike. No matter the genre or discipline of the project, the purpose-built, stripped-down nature of race machinery leaves minimal room for aesthetic creativity.

After all, these bikes are not built to look pretty. They’re built to run a distance in the quickest time possible. So form takes a backseat to function, and each component needs finely tuned design.

When Pierre Dhers of Freeride Motos Racing was offered a commission to build a 450cc single with vintage flair for a flat track race series, the he knew he had his work cut out for him.

But he was undeterred—because he’s spent the better part of the last decade single-handedly operating a successful full-service motorcycle and race shop under the Freeride banner.

The commission was from seasoned Dakar Rally driver, Pierre Lachaume, who has decided to shake things up for 2020 and try his luck on two-wheels in France’s Flat Track Championship.

The pair of Pierres decided the tracker would be based on a KTM 450 SX-F, so a clean 2013 specimen was sourced and the project began. The first order of business would be getting the mechanical and performance aspects of the build in order. With the donor torn down to a rolling chassis, Dhers called on Sébastien at Off Road Development to lower and tune the 450’s suspension, in preparation for a full season of going fast and left.

The KTM now rides on a set of flat track-appropriate 19” wheels front and aft, with black Excel rims laced to black Talon hubs with bare spokes and nipples.

In place of the stock exhaust is a full-custom setup. Dhers hand-bent a single-piece Inox head and mid-pipe which routes to a low-slung aftermarket can. It’s been stripped of its factory branding and decorated with a ‘Freeride Motos Racing’ badge.

“I manufactured the exhaust pipe from 1mm stainless steel and the silencer is from MIVV,” says Dhers. “It allows the bike to pass the technical inspection requirements of 112db for the races.”

The Austrian single also benefits from a new, oversized aluminum radiator, paired with white silicone Samco hoses. The original front brake setup is gone, along with the stock handlebar arrangement. This machine now sports wide, blacked-out Renthal bars fitted with ODI grips and a tethered kill-switch.

What sets the KTM apart from the rest of the singles in the paddock is its complete set of custom bodywork. Pierre crafted the shapes in fiberglass, which he used to make the molds. He used these to generate the front number board, the tank cover/grilles, and the tail section, complete with its integrated square number boards—also made in fiberglass.

Unlike the custom bodywork on his earlier builds, the fiberglass pieces on this SX-F were designed to be produced as a kit. Dhers has gone to great lengths to ensure that mounting the kit is easy and hassle-free, with each piece bolting directly onto stock mounting points or brackets.

“What’s great about this kit is that it can be installed without any modifications to the chassis. The design also allows the bike to retain its stock tank and its fuel-pump, as well as the original airbox and even the stock saddle. We can transform a bike in just a few hours,” says Dhers.

Once the KTM was fully built up, Dhers began prepping it for paint. The two Pierres opted to go with a baby blue scheme that evokes the livery from vintage KTM models before the more recent, orange-clad era of the Ready To Race brand.

“The paint was inspired by KTMs from 1974. The livery was designed by Pierre Lachaume, and entrusted to Rémi from the Art Scratch workshop. There are no stickers or decals here,” says a proud Dhers.

The new high-volume radiator was treated to a set of custom CNC-machined aluminum covers. There’s also a new pair of fork guards, hit with the same gloss baby blue paint as the rest of the bodywork, and emblazoned with playful scripts on either side: the left reads “NO FRONT BRAKE,” and the right simply says “TURN LEFT.”

Other nods to scoots of yesteryear include a custom aluminum fuel cap machined up by Dhers’ father, and a leather saddle that combines classic MX characteristics with thoroughly modern traits. “The seat is another element that reinforces the vintage theme. It was made in full grain leather by the very talented craftsman, Christophe Cannac from the AKOTABE workshop,” says Dehrs.

While the bike was being painted, Dhers pulled everything apart one last time, to repaint or polish every nook and cranny on the tracker. “I also completely overhauled both the engine and running gear,” he tells us (and we’re glad to hear).

It must have been intimidating to build a competition machine for a seasoned Dakar vet, but Lachaume couldn’t be happier with the end result. He’s got a highly competent 450cc single short tracker racer with a healthy dose of vintage nods and aesthetic traits.

The only thing left to do is to attack those European short tracks…

KTM Riders Come Away Victorious At Hawkstone International MX KTM riders Tony Cairoli and Pauls Jonass clean house before the start of the World Championship season. Begin Press Release: CAIROLI & JONASS ON WINNING STREAK AT MALAGROTTA & HAWKSTONE INTERNATIONAL MX Red Bull KTM’s Tony Cairoli was in excellent form at the second round of the Italian International Motocross Championship at Malagrotta on Sunday. After two straight victories in both the MX1 and the Elite Class, the Italian leaves the second round with a good chance to grab both titles. Meanwhile Jorge Prado finished 3rd in the MX2 class and factory teammate Pauls Jonass won both MX2 motos at Hawkstone International Motocross 2017. The Italian Championship is a popular series that gives riders essential race practice before the start of the 2017 World championship season in Qatar (February 25, 2017). The final round is at Ottobiano next weekend. KTM factory teammate Jorge Prado (ESP) also had a solid day out on the hard pack Italian track to finish third in the MX2 class. He also held onto his overall points lead in the class going into the last round. MX1Tony Cairoli got away well at the start of the MX1 race on the KTM 450 SX-F and was in second behind Romain Febvre. He immediately went on the charge and passed his French rival before the end of the opening lap. Cairoli then settled in at the front and rode there all the way to the flag. KTM factory rider Glenn Coldenhoff (NED) finished sixth in the race and is also sixth in the championship going into the final round. Elite Class Red Bull KTM’s two MX1 riders Cairoli and Coldenhoff both saved the best till last to deliver a strong showing in the day’s final Elite Class race. Cairoli was fast out of his gate, with his MX2 teammate Prado right on his wheel. To the collective joy of his Italian fans, he looked set to dominate the race but slid out in the second lap and dropped back to fifth. Coldenhoff quickly moved into the lead. The race then developed into a thriller with plenty of hard charges amongst the group of four behind Coldenhoff, but the Dutch rider held on at the front for about 20 minutes. Meanwhile Cairoli was on the attack and picked off the opposition, one rider at a time. He grabbed the lead as the race went into the final two laps and went on to take the win. Coldenhoff, who has had the flu this week managed to hold on to fourth. Cairoli: “We’ve had a great weekend at home here at Malagrotta. I won the pole position this morning and then the MX1 race. The little crash in the Elite race made it a bit more difficult but sometimes its good to have to overtake and fight for it. I managed to come back from fifth to win the second race. The track was very good, also very technical and demanding, so I’m very happy about the weekend.” Cairoli added that it was very important to have his feeling and his old racing style back after having some injury problems last season. “I feel great again and I’m trying to train a bit better. It’s working and I see the difference,” he added. Coldenhoff did well, particularly as he had not been able to train during the week. “I think I showed my speed in the elite race. I started in sixth and I moved up to second, then after Tony went down I took the lead and stayed there for about 20 minutes. In the end my power was gone, and I had to slow down and not take any risks. But we know the speed is there and we can run upfront. This is the positive thing to take away from this weekend.” MX2 Prado made a very strong start in the MX2 race and was the early leader. KTM unveiled its most comprehensive, innovative and extreme range, when it presented five new motorcycles at the EICMA show in Milan (Tuesday, November 6).

Leading its 2019 line-up is the eagerly anticipated KTM 790 ADVENTURE and KTM 790 ADVENTURE R. “You spoke, we listened.” KTM is a riders’ company and these all-new models are a direct result of customer feedback mixed with the brand’s experience and expertise. Punching way above their cubic capacities, KTM set new performance and offroad ability benchmarks in the mid-capacity travel enduro market.

The KTM 790 ADVENTURE is for travel enduro fans of every ambition and ability, ready to discover new roads – no matter surface. The KTM 790 ADVENTURE R is a lightweight, agile and technically advanced machine for adventurers that endeavour to challenge themselves while tackling tricky terrain. Both powered by the 799cc LC8c parallel twin – first seen in the KTM 790 DUKE – the engine has been tuned to deliver its torque lower down the rev range to fit the specific requirements of adventure riding. The result is smooth acceleration, plentiful performance and a 450 km range from a 20 litre tank.

Each of these rugged bikes have been developed by some of the best adventure riders in the world, in conjunction with the Red Bull KTM Rally Factory Racing Team. They provide a confidence-inspiring chassis with a low centre of gravity and riding ergonomics to suit riders of all size and spirit. A full suite of rider assistance systems; easily navigated and activated with a bar-mounted menu switch, aligned to a full colour TFT display, allow the adventurous to get the most from these machines.

Also in the KTM Travel Enduro range, the incredible KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S and KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE R receive new colours and graphics to keep these exciting machines looking as sharp and bold as they perform.

Rebooting supermoto for the road, the KTM 690 SMC R returns in 2019 and takes the KTM READY TO RACE approach to the street; lightweight, agile, addictive single-cylinder punch, premium chassis components and now backed up by leading performance-enhancing electronic package.

Powering the KTM 690 SMC R is the latest generation LC4 engine; the world’s most powerful production single-cylinder engine delivers 74 hp and 73.5 Nm of torque. Getting the most from this performance in all situations is a suite of rider assistance systems. Two ride modes – Street and Sport – cornering ABS, lean angle-sensitive motorcycle traction control (MTC), motor slip regulation (MSR) and Quickshifter+, are new to the game, sitting alongside the familiar Supermoto ABS mode aiding rear slides with front-end confidence. All this is packaged in an updated chassis and new subframe, supported by the latest generation fully-adjustable WP APEX suspension and wrapped in slimmer, sharper bodywork with a 1.5 litre bigger fuel tank.

The new KTM 690 ENDURO R is perfectly positioned to connect tarmac and trails, benefitting from the same engine, electronics and chassis improvements made to its sliding Supermoto sibling, but in a platform completely focused on offroad.

Under the new seat and fresh bodywork, which is sharpened for both style and movement on the bike, is an all-new chassis with WP XPLOR suspension derived from KTM’s world-winning EXC models. Designed to be confidence inspiring, it is ready to tackle everything from easy trails to extreme offroad obstacles, as well as being a competent every day street bike.

The newly developed KTM SX-E 5 is the next step in KTM’s innovative line-up. Combining class-leading knowledge in youth motorcycling with years of development work in the e-sector, the KTM SX-E 5 is based on the incredibly popular 2-stroke KTM 50 SX with a high-end chassis powered by an electric motor. The mission was clear: to create an ultra-competitive machine that is easy to ride, even for pure beginners.

The KTM SX-E 5 enjoys the advantage of zero emissions, low noise and minimal maintenance, which makes it ideal for youngsters looking to make the first step into the world of motorcycling. Thanks to its dynamic design, it is ideal for the growing rider with an adjustable seat height.

The KTM PowerPack can provide more than two hours of riding for a beginner, or 25 minutes for the faster junior racers. Ryan Dungey Leads Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team To A 1-2 Finish At Anaheim II Press Release from KTM: Back-to-back reigning 450SX Champion Ryan Dungey earned his first victory of the season on Saturday as he led the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team to an impressive 1-2 finish at Round 3 of the AMA Supercross World Championship in Anaheim. His teammate, Marvin Musquin, finished only two seconds back for 2nd, capturing his third consecutive podium finish this season. Troy Lee Designs Red Bull KTM’s Shane McElrath maintained his points lead with a 3rd place finish in the 250SX West division. It was a rough start to the evening for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 riders as both Ryan Dungey and Marvin Musquin were forced to enter the semi-final race after experiencing bad luck in the heat races. Musquin lined up in 450SX Heat 1 where he jumped into a 3rd place position on the opening lap. However, on lap three Musquin got caught up in another rider’s crash and went down, ultimately running out of time to make a qualifying position from the heat race. Dungey didn’t experience any better luck as he went down on the opening lap of 450SX Heat 2. As a result of the crash, Dungey was unable to continue on due to a problem with his throttle body harness. Both Musquin and Dungey were seeded into 450SX Semi 1 amongst a full slate of heavy-hitters in the class. Musquin got off to a good start, eventually making his way into the lead on lap two. From there, Musquin held a strong pace to capture the Semi 1 win. Dungey got off to a mid-pack start but the defending champion climbed his way up to ultimately finish 3rd en route to the Main Event. Main Event Despite 13th gate pick for the Main Event, Dungey was able to get a great jump out of the gate to battle for the holeshot and assume the early lead aboard his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION. Musquin didn’t get the best jump but he settled into the 5th place position on the opening lap. Musquin immediately began picking off riders where he put himself into 3rd place around the halfway point. Musquin was then able to get around Cole Seely for the 2nd place position where he set his sights on his teammate Dungey out front. Dungey put forth a solid performance throughout the 22-lap Main Event, where he earned his first victory of the 2017 season at Round 3, thus taking over the championship points lead in the class. Dungey: “I’m thankful to get this win earlier in the season rather than later. Tonight was testing for me – first the throttle broke in the heat race and then my start in the semi wasn’t too great but we were able to end the night on a good note. The Main Event was tricky, the track was nasty but I’m surprised with the rain that it was as good as it was. There were a bunch of kickers so I was just focused on hitting my lines and marks. Overall, with all the adversity we faced I’m glad we could come away with the win tonight – it was a hard-earned one!” Musquin captured his third podium of the season to maintain his 2nd place position in the championship point standings, where he sits only seven points behind Dungey after three rounds. Musquin: “All I can say is ‘you gotta do what you gotta do.’ Both of us went to the semi-final but still qualified to the Main Event and proved we can still be on the podium after going to the semi. Once again at the beginning I wasn’t as good as the end but I tried to stay calm and keep up with those guys. Roczen got around me and had a big crash so after that I tried to switch up my line to stay smooth. I wasn’t too far from Ryan but he was already gone at the beginning so 2nd place wasn’t too bad for me and a really good night for Red Bull KTM.” 250SX West ClassShane McElrath powered his KTM 250 SX-F FACTORY EDITION into a top-five position off the start as he battled his way through a hungry pack of front-runners. Beginning in the 4th place position, the two-time race winner engaged in a battle with Austin Forkner early on where he made the pass for 3rd place on lap five. From there, McElrath pushed ahead to maintain a solid podium position for the remainder of the race. With two wins and a 3rd place finish behind him, McElrath continues to hold the 250SX West points lead heading into the next round. McElrath: “Everyone was going fast and I was giving it everything I had – and tonight that was 3rd place. Coming into this championship race (with the points lead) has been a whole new thing for me. It’s something that we can’t be anything but thankful for today – we still have the red plate and the points lead.
