Greetings Indaba Music!

I guess this is where I “dive in.” swoosh (that is me diving…)
I am currently on a plane heading towards Paris.  My friend Adam Tressler (great NYC-based guitarist) is currently asleep to my right (I wish I was sleeping… but alas, I have a head cold and you all know how that feels in a plane!).  We are going to play a tour in France with one date in Berlin.  We have booked it so we can hang around Berlin for a few days because neither Adam nor myself have been there before.  Any suggestions for restaurants, sights, music venues?  It’s a blank slate for us as of now.
I just got back from SXSW in Austin two days ago and am off again.  My band and I traveled for four days each way, stopping to play a show in TN on the way as well as indulge at the many Waffle Houses along the way (they are all exactly the same).  It was definitely worth it since tons of my friends were playing and/or there for business plus all the bands I didn’t know that were playing…I can’t believe the density of people that city has to accommodate when SXSW and ACL hit.  Austin is always a fun town to hang around in.  It’s filled with music, great Tex-Mex food, and awesome people!  We played a bunch of shows in the local venues but my favorite show was when we put up shop right on the corner of Congress and 6th and brought out a ukulele, acoustic guitar, tambourine, glockenspiel, children’s toys, and other percussion instruments and played to a crowd of people on the street.
Let’s shoot back months before to November… I was starting to get my SXSW plans in order.  I knew I wanted to go but up until then I had been renting cars for tours and basically just handing Hertz a bag of cash.  I knew I needed a van but I had no way of funding one for our March tour to Austin.  My lovely friend and manager Emily White met Yancey Strickler (co-founder of Kickstarter) and mentioned that I was looking to raise money for a van.  We ended up meeting in a local Brooklyn Heights teahouse (since Yancey and I turned out to be neighbors) and discussed Kickstarter, music, whatever tickled our fancy and then I decided that I really wanted to move forward with the project.  Plus Yancey was awesome and convinced me that Kickstarter was awesome (even though I didn’t need much convincing).
I starter a Kickstarter account the next day and after three months of promoting the fundraiser I had reached my goal of $5,000.  It was such a great experience.  I made new fans that were really a part of the project!  They donated money and I sent them prizes in return (cds, pins, handmade scarves, concert tickets, etc).  This project was so much more than donations.  It enabled me to make connections with these people!  They became fans but also friends.  There were emails and tweets sent back and forth about life, music, goals, etc.  I am so thankful to have found these people who supported me enough to help fund my tour!  They helped me do what I do best, which is make music and tour!
Sometimes I feel like there is this elitist vibe with some musicians.  They feel like they need to be a “rock star” but at the end of the day we are all human and it is the job of a musician (in my opinion) to make something honest.  What is the point in making people feel like they don’t understand you?  All it does is push them away.  Fans are people who support you musically but also personally.  With the invention of Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and Kickstarter, that wall has been broken down.  Embrace it!  Hell, I think if a musician doesn’t have enough money for an album, reach out!  Be human and say, “I need YOUR support.”  Can we help each other out?
Ok my flight is going to be landing and Internet will be taken away.  I will finish my rambling now. Sydney Wayser
