tl;dr: covid is a vascular disease, not a respiratory illness. it can affect your blood and every organ in your body. every time you're reinfected, your chances of getting long covid increase.
avoid being infected. reduce the amount of viral load you're exposed to.
the gap between what the scientific community knows and ordinary people know is massive. collective action is needed.

If y'all who actually care about my obsessive doberman posting ever wonder why I'm cagey about who I recommend nowadays, and why I don't name people who are "known greats" in the breed, consider:
Person C has a dobe produced by Person A and Person B. B and C are good friends. B has made some highly questionable breeding decisions including using dogs with known cardiac health problems and covering up thyroid problems by representing the dogs as "thyroid normal" but not including the detail that they're only normal while actively on thyroid medication.
Person C posts that their dog from this pairing is severely low thyroid at a fairly young age, and that they've decided not to breed their dog as a result. Person A publicly lamblasts C, calls it not that big of a deal, and swings by C's house to collect semen anyway. C deletes previous post, reports the photo, and the new caption makes no mention of thyroid disease but instead talks about how the dog passed all the other health certs with no issue, implying that the dog is perfectly healthy.
Consider:
Person Z has two dogs they have titled to impressively high levels in protection sport. Just before breeding, Z gets very bad results from heart testing on both dogs. One dog definitely has DCM, the #1 breed killer that takes over 50% of dobes from us by way of sudden death with no other symptoms, ie the dogs just collapse and die one day or die in their sleep with no other warning (unless you're doing rigorous heart testing). The other dog has concerning results indicating that DCM is on the horizon but not yet diagnosable.
Z puts both dogs on heart meds designed to combat DCM. The dogs' next test results return to normal. Z uses this normal result to say the dogs have healthy hearts and breeds the dogs anyway. Z has made no mention to the buyers of this litter that the parents both effectively have DCM, albeit well controlled with medication thus far.
If I did not have all 4 of these people on Facebook I would not know this about them. If someone were to friend them currently right now, they would not find evidence of this, because the posts with evidence have been deleted. There is no way to know this about them without knowing in advance.
When I say that the people I personally would get a dog from is a very small, exclusive club nowadays, I don't mean just because I'm particular about temperament, though that is certainly part of it. It's because I've watched this behavior from a LOT of otherwise popular, well-respected, well-liked breeders and I know if I named names their fan bases would crucify me, but I've also seen the wrongdoing with my own eyes or even in person.

You walked down the hall and stood for a moment outside room 12B. Part of you wasn’t sure if you were making the right choice in going to see Bradley, but something was pulling you to him.
You knocked three times and waited. You heard a shuffling inside and the door flew open. Bradley stood in front of you in sweats and shirtless, his dog tags dangling delicately in between his pecks. You immediately flushed bright red.
“Sorry, I wasn’t sure what time to come.” You bit your lip.
“You’re right on time, come in.” He grinned, grabbing your hand and pulling you inside.
“Right on time for what?” You laughed, hovering by the door.
“Sit, I’ll show you.” You did as he said and sat down on the small single bed you were sure was nowhere near big enough for someone Bradley’s size. He disappeared into the small en-suite and returned a moment later with a bottle of red wine and two plastic cups.
“I thought alcohol was strictly prohibited onboard?” You queried, but eagerly reaching for a cup as he poured. You needed a drink after the last few crazy days.
“It is, but… remember that Godfather I mentioned? Well lately he’s been more of a fairy Godfather, with everything going on he’s been a little less strict than usual, and he was never all that strict to begin with.” He chuckled, sitting next to you with his cup and cheersing you.
You smiled at him as you took a sip, immediately relaxing. “What’s the occasion?”
Bradley went quiet for a moment, and then looked into your eyes, suddenly serious.
“We’re flying out to the mainland tomorrow. It’s gotten bad Rue.” He nodded, a somber look taking over his usually cheerful face.
“Wait, what do you mean? Flying out for what?” You asked, suddenly filled with nerves.
“According to the CDC infection rates have skyrocketed, symptoms are slow to start but when they do they’re goddamn fast, and that’s just causing widespread panic, it’s absolute chaos. Tactical bombing has turned to just nuking whole cities, and we’re only a few days in. They want us on the ground with our army boys and girls to try and control the situation.” He said gravely, and your heart thumped aggressively in your chest.
“Bradley, you can’t…” you breathed, suddenly terrified for him.
“Don’t have a choice.” Bradley shrugged, “That’s why I was hoping to see you tonight.” He admitted. His face was close enough that you could smell the wine on his breath.
“You need to come back.” You told him.
“If I know you’re here waiting for me, I’ll do everything I can to come back.” He rasped.
You pressed your lips to his gently, suddenly desperate to feel him against you, thinking this may be your one and only chance.
Bradley took your drink from your hand and put it on his side table sloppily, wine spilling out over the sides. He pulled your legs so you were straddling him as he kissed you back, his hands remaining on your upper thighs.
You sighed into him and wrapped your arms around his neck as his strong hands squeezed your thighs, kissing him harder.
Bradley flipped you over so you were laying against his bed, as he continued his assault on your lips.
You pulled away for a moment to breathe and he moved to your neck, placing sloppy kisses down to your collar bone.
He grabbed the hem of your t shirt and pulled it over your head, and then tugged your sweats off in one quick motion.
You suddenly felt self conscious as the cool air kissed your skin, clad in nothing but your small black underwear.
Bradley took a moment to admire you, his eyes blown and his mouth hung open slightly.
“You are so beautiful.” He whispered.
“Come here.” You mumbled, hooking a finger around his dog tags and gently pulling him to you. Bradley crawled back up your body until his lips were back on yours, his bare skin hot against yours.
You made out for what felt like forever, savouring the feeling of each others lips and hands as they explored one another, before Bradley’s fingers found your bra clasp, and rid you of the offending item. His hand immediately replaced the bra and you moaned loudly at the feeling, bucking up into him.
“That feel good?” Bradley mumbled in between kissing your neck. You whimpered as he ground his hips into you.
“Yes.” You hissed, and he did it again, before moving down and capturing your nipple in his mouth.
You needed more, all Bradley was doing was teasing you. It had been such a long time since you’d last been intimate with anyone, and the sexual tension from the last few days was proving to be too much.
You hooked your thumbs into your underwear sides and yanked them down, causing Bradley’s jaw to drop fully as he looked down. He sat back on his heels and slowly peeled your underwear off of your legs, gently kissing your ankles as he lifted them.
He slid two fingers into his mouth and sucked, before spreading your legs apart and making eye contact with you.
“You want this?” He asked.
You nodded.
“Tell me how badly you want it.” He growled.
“I want you so bad!” You mewled at him, growing frustrated and impatient. The man looked like a God in the lamp light, golden and chiselled, you couldn’t take it.
Bradley grinned at you and slowly ran his fingers through your soaking wet folds. Your back arched at the sensation, begging for more.
Carefully, he slid a thick finger inside you, you moaned and bucked again as a second finger entered, and he began to pump, his thumb rubbing lazy circles into your clit.
“Fuck!” You cried, and he began to move faster, pulling whimpers from your mouth as you squirmed below him.
He palmed himself through his sweatpants as he watched his handiwork unfold, your wetness growing as his fingers slid in and out.
Your stomach began to tighten but you didn’t want it to yet. “Bradley stop! I need you.” You whined, now looking at him.
“Yes ma’am.” He purred, standing to remove his sweats and underwear. His rock hard member slapped against his chiselled torso, the size of him sure to tear you apart, but you didn’t care.
He climbed on top of you and kissed you passionately, you wrapped your legs around him as he positioned his tip at your entrance. You bucked again, and his tip slid in, stretching you in a way that made you want to cry out in pleasure. You and Bradley bucked in rhythm as more and more of him slid inside you, he grunted loudly, almost animalistically when he was fully seated.
“Oh my god, you feel so good.” He gasped, thrusting slowly.
You couldn’t speak, instead a series of pornographic noises between the two of you became a sort of communication as you paid all the attention to one another’s bodies. Rocking into one another and causing the metal framed bed to pound against the wall, your legs wrapped tightly around him.
You cried out and your body shuddered violently as you reached your climax, clenching around Bradley even tighter, causing him to reach his own end. His thrusts became sloppy and fast, as he bit your shoulder, grunting loudly as he came undone.
He collapsed on top of you and you both panted together, stealing a few more kisses until you had regained enough strength to pull away.
You cleaned yourselves up and spent the rest of the evening drinking wine in your underwear and sharing kisses in between conversation, until it was 3am and you knew you had to say goodnight.
“I don’t want you to go.” You admitted, terrified of what waited for him on the mainland.
“I have to, there are a lot of people counting on me. They need me.” Bradley stroked your hair as you leaned against the open door frame.
“What if I need you?”
Bradley smiled and kissed you for a long moment. “You don’t need me. But I’m coming back for you, Rue girl.” He promised as he pulled away.
“You better.” You smiled at him one last time before you walked down the hall to your room.
————————————
You spent the next day very much unable to focus. Every time you tried desperately to focus on the very important task at hand, your mind slipped inadvertently back to Bradley, and your stomach knotted with worry.
Bob had noticed your lack of mental presence and concentration, but chose not to say anything, as he knew it was not his place.
That was until around 2pm, when due to being distracted, you had knocked a glass beaker off of your desk and it landed with a deafening crash in the otherwise silent room, everyone turning to stare at you, like you had done something unforgivable.
You couldn’t hold in the frustration and pent up emotions anymore, so you huffed, rid yourself of your lab coat and stormed out of the room, muttering that you’d be back to clean up the glass later.
Bob looked around at your colleagues with wide eyes, “Everyone carry on with your work, I’ll be back.” He instructed, running after you.
He found you down the end of the long hallway, your hands covering your face as you paced, your chest heaving as you panted through what he thought looked to be the makings of a panic attack.
He crossed the hallway quickly and took you in his arms, “Hey, hey, it’s ok.” He muttered, as you melted into him and began to cry.
“Hey, it was just a beaker, we have more.” He chuckled softly.
“No, that’s not it.” You sobbed.
“Then tell me what’s going on.” He said, pulling away slightly so he could look at you, stroking your hair.
“I can’t.” Your bottom lip jutted in a pout, and Bobs heart melted. He looked around the hallway, and gave you a quick but sweet kiss.
You hummed.
“Yes you can, you can tell me anything Rue.” He pressed. You kissed him back, longer this time, your lips wet with tears.
“I can’t Bob, just trust me that I can’t. I need a distraction.” You breathed, beginning to unbutton Bobs shirt.
“Woah woah, hey, not here.” He breathed, taking your hand and pulling you down the hall.
Once you had reached Bobs room, he closed the door, and you pushed him up against it, kissing him hungrily.
“Wait, Rue. I can’t do this when you’re upset.” He grabbed your hands gently and pushed you backwards until your legs hit the bed and you sat down.
You huffed, “Then why’d you bring me back here, Bob?”
“Because I want you to talk to me, what’s going on with you today?” The worried look on his face unfaltering. God he was so handsome, you just wanted to rip his clothes off and-
“Rue?” Bob pressed. You sighed, throwing yourself back on the bed as you stared up at the ceiling.
You contemplated whether or not it was a good idea to tell him, ultimately deciding to be honest.
“Bradley and his squad have been sent to the mainland, he says it’s gotten out of control, Bob. And here I am unable to focus enough on a stupid cure that could fix it all.”
“I’m assuming Bradley’s the other guy?” Bob sighed. You nodded.
Bob leant back so he was laying next to you, and he took your hand in his, threading his fingers in between them.
“Listen, it’s not our fault that the outbreak started, so that at least shouldn’t be on your mind. Here we are being tasked with this mammoth, burden of a responsibility that we had zero say in, and we’re doing our best. You’re doing your best. There are going to be good days and bad, Rue, don’t put too much pressure on yourself.”
You turned your head to look at him, weighing up his words as you got lost in his cobalt eyes. You turned your head back to the ceiling and sighed heavily.
“Bradley and I fucked last night.” You blurted out.
Bobs eyes went wide, and he joined you in staring at the ceiling again.
“Do you want to be with him… more?” He asked.
“No, my feelings for you both are equal. It’s not fair I know, but… you’re both so different, both in incredible ways. You can tell me to fuck off if you want.”
Bob chuckled suddenly in surprise. “No, I won’t do that. I want you too badly.”
You looked at him again, and brought a hand over to caress his face gently.
You bit your lips at his words, you wanted him so badly in that moment.
“Will you fuck me, Bob?” You asked, not caring about how crass your question came across.
Bob shook his head, “No.” he mumbled. Your heart sank.
“I won’t fuck you Rue, but I’ll make love to you if you’ll let me.”
Your heart thrummed against your chest, as Bob rolled over to his side.
His hand gently skimmed the bare skin of your stomach that peaked through under your T-shirt. The feeling sent electric shocks through you.
He dipped his head and captured your lips hungrily, and your hands moved to tangle in his hair.
Bob gently drew patterns on your skin before his fingers dipped below your jeans, eliciting a gasp from you as they slipped below your underwear and through your already slick folds.
Bob wasted no time in slipping inside you as he kissed your lips, his tongue licking across your bottom lip to ask for entrance. You granted this and his tongue slipped into your mouth, expertly exploring yours.
He slipped in a second thick finger and began to pump gently, you moaned into his mouth and your chest heaved as you began to pant with pleasure. You could feel Bob growing harder and harder through his pants against your leg, and you moved your hand to rub his bulge.
Bob grunted at the feeling and you took this as permission to clumsily unzip his pants, pumping his now free cock slowly. God he was also massive, your poor body would be stretched and bruised but you didn’t care. Bob growled lowly into your lips, and his thumb moved to rub gentle circles into your now throbbing clit. You bucked your hips at the feeling and Bob picked up the pace until you were panting and whining for more than just his delicious hands on you.
Bob bit your bottom lip and pulled away, you immediately missed the stretch of his fingers and lips on yours.
Bob stood and unbuttoned his shirt while you watched, you were a little surprised at how chiselled and tanned he was below his professional attire, and once he rid himself of his pants, he no longer looked like Dr Bob Floyd from Virology, no, this man was your Bobby. Messy hair, wild eyes behind his steamy glasses, a perfect body and veiny arms, he looked different somehow.
You sat up and whipped your shirt off, and shimmied out of your jeans until you were just in your underwear. Bob held up a hand to instruct you to leave them on as he crawled back up to you. He slowly kissed a line up your legs, stopping to give extra attention to your hot core through your soaking underwear. You threw your head back against the mattress as he licked a stripe up the fabric and moved to pepper kisses along your stomach and up the valley of your breasts. He snuck a hand behind your back and unclasped your bra, using his teeth to pull it off of you. He took a second to marvel at your body below him, naked and soft and beautiful, as he dropped your bra into his lap and threw it aside.
Bob then took two large hands and wrapped them around your upper thighs, pulling you down the bed, closer to him. He rubbed his hands teasingly up your thighs, and hooked his fingers in your soaking underwear, pulling them off slowly.
Bob spat into his hand and pumped himself, before running his fingers through your folds again, dipping back inside you and curling his fingers expertly against your g spot.
You choked out a pleasured sob as you clenched around his fingers, and he slowly removed them.
Bob looked you in the eyes as he positioned himself at your entrance, and slowly pushed into you. You gasped and Bob moaned at the feeling of him stretching out your tight walls.
“Bobby!” You cried, back arching and eyes closing tight. His hands squeezed around your thighs as he let you both adjust to the feeling.
“W-want me to stop?”
You shook your head, “No, don’t stop. You feel so good, please move.” You begged, and Bob did as he was told, his mouth half hanging open in pleasure and half in a crooked grin. Sitting back on his heels with your lower half angled up towards him, he thrust into you slowly, gripping one hand on your thigh as the other moved to your hip, pulling you into him. Grunts of pleasure left Bobs lips as he thrust, and you felt you might scream from the pleasure. Bob felt incredible, there was something about his slow and intentional movements that sent shockwaves through you.
The hand that had been on your thigh moved to your stomach, and flattened against you as he pressed down gently. You now felt Bobs thick cock rubbing against your cervix walls, and your eyes rolled to the back of your head, your jaw hanging open.
“Oh my god!” You cried, your hands gripping the sheets as you bucked your hips into him hard.
Bob picked up his pace and began to thrust harder, now leaning over you. He grabbed your jaw and tilted your face to look at him, your brows furrowed and you bit your lip.
“Tell me how I make you feel.” He instructed, this new Bob was seriously turning you on.
Bradley had done you well and good the night before, it was pleasurable and beautiful and left you wobbling afterwards, but this was a whole new ballgame, shy Bob could fuck.
You were a blabbering mess, unable to get any words out as he ground into you.
“I said, tell me how I make you feel.” He instructed again, his thumb pushing into your mouth. You gently bit down on the digit and Bob hissed.
“Like that. That’s how you make me feel.” You whined.
Bob grinned and planted his lips to yours again as he lifted one of your legs over his shoulder.
“You feel incredible.” He moaned into you. “Now come for me like a good girl.”
This sent you over the edge, your eyes rolling again as your back arched. Bob took one of your nipples into his mouth and swirled his hot tongue around it.
“Bob I’m gonna cum, don’t… don’t stop.” You moaned loudly, and Bob picked up the pace, thrusting harder into you as his lips moved to suck bruises into your neck.
“That’s my good, dirty girl.” He growled into your neck, and that was your undoing. You nails dug into his back as you bucked violently, clenching around him as you screamed his name.
Bob followed shortly after, the scene unfolding under him too hot to ignore, and hot ropes of cum spilt into you as he cursed loudly, his thrusting grew sloppy and ground to a halt.
Panting, he hovered over you for several minutes, admiring your beautiful flustered face, eyes black with lust and swollen lips. You lifted a hand to remove his foggy glasses so you could look into his eyes, a bead of sweat rolling down his neck and down his red chest.
“Not gonna lie, the glasses really get me going.” You chuckled, and Bob collapsed with his head on your chest as he laughed.
You both eventually made it back to the lab, walking on wobbly legs and both very clearly having been up to something. The smiles on your faces evidently opposite to how you had left the room.
Safe to say you received a few glares from your female colleagues as you went back to work, but at least now you could focus on the task at hand.

I hope people will read the full article (side note, we've been seeing cases in Canada as well). But the main takeaways for pet owners, imo are:
Vaccinate your dogs. Especially for: Bordetella, canine adenovirus type 2, canine parainfluenza, canine influenza
Consult your veterinarian if your dog displays any of the following symptoms: lingering cough, weakness, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, worsening of illness, a cough severe enough to cause the dog to vomit or struggle to breathe
Your dog may be more at risk if it is: old, very young, brachycephalic (short nosed or flat faced), immunocompromised, pregnant, or has underlying heart or respiratory disease
Vaccinate your dogs!

A/N: I have celiac disease and the symptoms the unnamed ofc experiences are the symptoms I experience. I know it can be different for everyone, but this is just how I experience it. Also, I do not have a gluten detection dog (though I'd love one), so what I've written about that is solely what I learned through Instagram.
When Henry first started dating her, it took him a while before he realized she never ever wanted to eat somewhere. It was always a orange banana smoothie, a cappuccino where she would leave the complimentary cookie to the side or give it to him, or some mint tea.
Their dates had been amazing and he so desperately wanted to prolong their time together, however she never wanted to eat anywhere.
Finally he asked her about it.
Why can’t we have dinner somewhere?
And she let him in on the matter by saying: ‘I’ve got celiac disease.’
A few hours consulting doctor Google, enlightened him further on the matter and he realized she didn’t want to risk the aftermath of accidentally consuming some gluten. Thats why she opted for kisses on the cheek at the end of their dates, when he did eat the cookie. That’s why she had this way of flicking her hand as she took something off the shelves, checking the ingredients. He thought she was just watching her food for a diet or something, when in reality she’d been checking it for ingredients that would make her sick.
Finally, they kissed, after he ate a gluten-free dinner with her, a dinner they prepared together and he fell even more in love with her than he already did. Sure, it took some adapting, but for her, he did it in a heartbeat and with love. When he was with his friends, he consumed all the gluten he wanted, but with her, he just ate what she made for herself, therefore also for him and they did not have to worry about gluten consumption.
He took her to game night with his friends, where they’d watch rugby and have beer and chips. She politely declined, though Henry wasn’t exactly sure if it was because it looked highly unappetizing or if she really couldn’t eat it. She let him in on the little secret she sometimes fakes she can’t have it, solely because she doesn’t want to eat it, but also doesn’t want to say those exact words.
Either way, he understood.
Like he would usually do during game night, he wanted to grab a beer, but after a quick check—a habit he had picked up from her—he realized he couldn’t have it.
But she was quick to notice his disappointment. ‘You can have the beer,’ she said. ‘I know you want to, baby. It’s okay.’
He however placed it back and said: ‘Nah, I want to kiss my girlfriend whenever I want.’
It became a regular thing. Him declining offers whenever he was with her, him ordering gluten-free when they dared going out for dinner, so he could eventually exchange it with her if she did not like her order.
However, it went wrong and he hated seeing her like that. Curled up on the couch with a hot bottle against her bloated stomach, her pale face with deep dark circles underneath her eyes and the fact the restroom became her second home. Witnessing her own body having a immune response like that, solely because of accidental gluten consumption, it broke his heart. When she finally was semi back on her feet again, he could see the aftermath for weeks. Her intense fatigue, her ruined appetite and the shift in her mood.
Naturally, because Henry likes to think pragmatically, he started to look for something he saw online recently.
A gluten detection dog.
After quite some digging, he finally found a trainer who trained dogs to become gluten detection dogs and arranged multiple meetings.
‘Where are we going?’ she asked him curiously, as they continued the drive to the barn. ‘I don’t think we’ve ever been here.’
‘It’s a surprise, love,’ he said. ‘I am sure you would like it.’
When they got out and saw the dog he had in mind already waiting for them. Her eyes lit up. ‘Oh my goodness, a dog?’
‘Not just a dog,’ he said.
The trainer appeared and together with the dog walked up to them with a smile. ‘No ma’am, it’s a gluten detection dog.’
She was absolutely stunned. She had heard about gluten detection dogs before, however never thought about getting one. For starters, it was too expensive and she thought relying on herself was good enough.
But the gluten free world is changing. Oats are considered gluten free now. When the gluten is pulled from the wheat, it’s considered gluten-free. And that is hard for her, because it’s not gluten free for her.
While the dog is not one hundred percent right, he can help her out.
Many tears are shed and she wraps her arms around the dog. ‘We’re going to be the best of friends,’ she says to the canine. ‘What’s their name.’
‘Her name is Ella,’ the trainer said. ‘Come on in, I’ll tell you more about Ella and the gluten detection dog protocol.’
Seeing the hearts appear in her eyes, Henry started to chuckle, realizing he probably is the only one who is going to listen. But that’s alright.
She’ll get the gist of it eventually.

Dogs are our best friends in sickness and in health!
Learn just how dogs can contribute to our physical and emotional well-being.
Dogs, often hailed as humans’ best friends, have been the topic of many scientific studies looking into how they might boost our well-being. In this Spotlight, we’ll explain how your friendly pup can benefit your health across the board.
Tumblr media
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), an estimated 78 million dogs are owned as pets in the United States. It is unclear when dogs were first domesticated, but a study Trusted Source published last year claims that, at least in Europe, dogs were tamed 20,000–40,000 years ago. It is likely that humans and dogs have shared a special bond of friendship and mutual support ever since at least the Neolithic period — but why has this bond been so long-lasting?
Of course, these cousins of the wolves have historically been great at keeping us and our dwellings safe, guarding our houses, our cattle, and our various material goods. Throughout history, humans have also trained dogs to assist them with hunting, or they have bred numerous quirky-looking species for their cuteness or elegance.
However, dogs are also — and might have always been — truly valued companions, famed for their loyalty and seemingly constant willingness to put a smile on their owners’ faces.
In this Spotlight, we outline the research that shows how our dogs make us happier, more resilient when facing stress, and physically healthier, to name but a few ways in which these much-loved quadrupeds support our well-being.
How dogs keep you in good health.
Many studies have suggested that having dogs as pets is associated with better physical health, as reviews Trusted Source of the existing literature show. These findings persist. Just last year, Medical News Today reported on a study that showed that owning a dog reduces a person’s risk of premature death by up to a third. Also, researchers at the University of Harvard in Cambridge, MA, suggest that dog owners have a lower risk of heart disease. Why is that? It is difficult to establish a causal relationship between owning a dog and enjoying better health.
However, the benefits may appear thanks to a series of factors related to lifestyle adjustments that people tend to make after they decide to adopt a canine friend.
The most prominent such lifestyle factor is physical activity. There is no way around it: if you own a dog, you have to commit to twice daily walks — and sometimes even more.
Tumblr media
According to a paper Trusted Source published in The Journal of Physical Activity and Health, dog owners are more likely to walk for leisure purposes than both non-pet owners and people who own pet cats.
The results were based on studying a cohort of 41,514 participants from California, some of whom owned dogs, some of whom owned cats, and some of whom did not have any pet
Moreover, several recent studies — including one from the University of Missouri in Columbia and another from Glasgow Caledonian University in the United Kingdom — found that adults aged 60 and over enjoy better health thanks to the “enforced” exercise they get by walking their dogs.
Dogs can strengthen our health not just as we grow older, but also much, much earlier than that: before we are even born. Research published last year suggests that children who were exposed to dogs while still in the womb — as their mothers spent time around dogs during pregnancy — had a lower risk of developing eczema in early childhood.
Also, children exposed to certain bacteria carried by dogs also experienced a reduction of asthma symptoms, the researchers noted.
‘Dogs make people feel good’
Tumblr media
Perhaps the most intuitive benefit of sharing your life and home with a canine friend is that dogs give you “feel-good vibes” almost instantly.
Dogs are often used as therapy animals because they have a calming effect on people.
It is really difficult not to cheer up, even after a hard day’s work, when you are greeted with — often vocal — enthusiasm by a friendly dog.
This, researchers explain, is due to the effect of the “love hormone” oxytocin.
“During the last decades,” write the authors of a review that featured in Frontiers in Psychology, “animal assistance in therapy, education, and care has greatly increased.”
When we interact with dogs, our oxytocin levels shoot up. Since this is the hormone largely responsible for social bonding, this hormonal “love injection” boosts our psychological well-being.
Previous studies analyzed in the review have revealed that dog owners have more positive social interactions, and that the presence of canine friends makes people more trusting…and also more deserving of trust. Moreover, dogs appear to reduce symptoms of depression and render people more resilient to stress. That is why dogs are often used as therapy animals.
As researcher Brian Hare, of Duke University in Durham, NC, noted in an interview for The Washington Post:
“Dogs make people feel good, and their only job is to help people in stressful situations feel better.”
Tumblr media
Researchers hypothesize that therapy dogs can improve the psychological well-being of children going through cancer therapy, as well as help individuals diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) deal with disruptive symptom Trusted Source or even prevent the onset of PTSD episodes.
What clinical research in dogs can teach us. Our canine companions could also give us clues and open new avenues of research when it comes to clinical research concerning our own health problems.
Dogs share many diseases with humans; by learning more about them, we can also learn more about ourselves. A study that MNT covered earlier this year reveals that dogs share certain metabolic conditions — such as obesity — with their human owners.
Thus, learning more about dogs’ gut microbiota and how they are affected by diet could help us understand how best to tackle our own eating habits.
Like humans, dogs can also develop some forms of cancer. Much like us, dogs can get brain tumors to similarly destructive effect, so learning which genes predispose our canine companions to gliomas may also be translated into cancer research for human patients.
Moreover, a contagious form of canine cancer could shed light into how forms of cancer found in humans have come to develop. Dogs can also experience certain features characteristic of dementia, such as impaired problem-solving abilities.
Dr. Rosalind Arden, of the London School of Economics and Political Science in the U.K., “are one of the few animals that reproduce many of the key features of dementia.”
Researchers explain that by understanding how cognitive tasks are affected in these quadrupeds, we may become better equipped to solve the riddle of dementia in the case of humans, too “Dogs,” notes
“[S]o,” she goes on to add, “understanding their cognitive abilities could be valuable in helping us to understand the causes of this disorder in humans and possibly test treatments for it.”
Dogs are not just incredibly loveable and often very funny friends whose antics fuel the Internet’s store of memes continuously; their company also keeps us in good physical shape. Also, their health problems — sadly but endearingly — often mirror our own.
Most of all, however, we welcome them into our lives — and have done so since time immemorial — because they instantly bring us the sort of joy and calm that we would otherwise have to work hard to obtain.
Author Dean Koontz summarized this perfectly in his memoir of his own much-loved dog:
“One of the greatest gifts we receive from dogs is the tenderness they evoke in us."
By their delight in being with us, the reliable sunniness of their disposition, the joy they bring to playtime, the curiosity with which they embrace each new experience, dogs can melt cynicism, and sweeten the bitter heart..

For the 4 favorite ships, maybe you can detect a pattern meme: except I'm doing 7 for better sample size 😉
1. MSR, the Original "ship" and an eternal fave
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Frendeavour, which manages to be age gap, detective partners, mentor/mentee, friends to enemies to friends multiple times with romantic subtext, pseudo brothers and pseudo father/son all at the same time. Also Roger Allam is there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Sam/Jack. Another classic, I wouldn't say Baby's First Ship (which is Crusher/Picard and that one is a little too much a part of my childhood to read fic about) but it's definitely one of the first! Ever since seeing the s2 ender/s3 opener one afternoon scifi channel marathon in the late 90s, Sam/Jack made a home in my fandom brain and never left 💜. They're one of the sweetest, most supportive and respectful relationships, in ways that still surprise me given the genre. And the pining! The beautiful, obvious years of pining! Not to mention that the fandom established so many of the beloved scifi shipping fic tropes ;)
Tumblr media
4. RomanGerri. It's romantic. It's asexual. It's pure kink. It's deeply sentimental between people terrified of sincerity. They're kindred spirits. They fight like cats and dogs. They love each other
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Janeway/Paris. I could do a whole dissertation here but this is one of those you get it or you don't ships. Suffice it to say that this pairing is extremely dear to my heart, and gives me all kinds of Elizabeth I and Robin Dudley feelings the way I wanted to but never did from J/C. A lot of it has to do with their shared background and the way there are surface differences in their approach to life and Starfleet but not that deep down they're extremely similar. Different symptoms of the same disease, I used to say about Kate and Tom and their fathers. But they make each other happier which is v important to me.
Tumblr media
6. Mirandy. Not my first femslash ship but one that stuck with me for a very long time. I don't talk about it much because it ended up being. A little on the nose for my overall emotional well-being. Similar to Hacks in that way. I love it a lot but it's too personal so I don't talk about it much.
Tumblr media
7. Soulbates/Norma x Norman. Let's call this rent lowering gunshots, okay? No hard feelings if you're not into following someone who's into the epic momson ship of 2013, but it is genuinely one of my favorite tragic ships ever since watching Bates about 18 months ago. I was into it enough to let my fandom group at the time jettison me because I wouldn't stop liking it lol. It's horrifying, yes, they love each other in appalling ways shaped by desperation, trauma and familiarity. Enmeshed so far it became a part of Normans foundational being. But there was real equal love amongst the dependency and the tragedy was as fascinating as it was inevitable.
Tumblr media
I guess my theme is uh. Older Women, huh 💀😇
I wasn't tagged but I saw this meme several times on my dashboard, so I felt like joining in. And coincidentally giving some newer followers a primer on my taste 😉😆. So if you reading want to share your ship, consider yourself tagged! And feel free to tag me if you like 😊

The COVID was the easiest part. I was practically asymptomatic. I walked the dog, drove four hours in the car, hiked the beach, canoed. This was in late June. The doctors in my life should have understood that this spooky absence of symptoms was an ominous sign—my immune-compromised self wasn’t putting up a fight when it should have. Instead, they all brushed off my concerns when I rang. To a person, they steered me away from Paxlovid.
Remember that crazy national moment when doctors were being weird about Paxlovid? And were really down on it? I got COVID in that brief window.
I cannot tell you how often I go back to that moment and take Paxlovid. It’s the world’s most unproductive form of magical thinking, trying to undetonate this bomb. And yet I do.
Anyway, around day 10, things went south. I was suddenly dizzy every moment of the day. The world looked like The Blair Witch Project, always bouncing. It bounced when I chewed. Then came the tinnitus, the ear fullness. Ménière’s disease seemed likely.
Google Ménière’s disease. It’s very challenging. I have nothing but compassion for those who have it.
Many elaborate tests later, I turned out not to have it.
The nature of my dizziness changed, feeling more like a gyroscope was spinning in my head, or like I was being pulled slantwise by magnetic raindrops, every damn second. Then came the whale of all symptoms: My head started to vibrate, painfully, every time I walked or talked.
People have asked me a lot about this. I really don’t know how else to explain it. I mean, imagine a tuning fork inside your brain. Every time I take a step, I feel it in my skull. Ditto when I speak. My latest combo of meds blunts most of the pain that comes with it. But the vibrating remains, and it’s driving me mad. I’m waiting on my insurance company to approve Botox injections to my skull. (Oh, the irony of being a 53-year-old woman praying for Botox in a place where it will have no visible aesthetic benefit.)
Then my standing heart rate got too fast. (Now it’s fine.) Then my blood pressure spiked when I stood, plus other forms of autonomic dysregulation. My eyeballs spin freely in their sockets for the first 20 minutes of each morning, for instance. Then my chest started to ache. Maybe from the blood-pressure spikes, maybe something else. And I’m short of breath now when I walk, as I said.
You see the problem, right? My aching chest, my breathlessness—it all means more doctors. And I am really, really sick of doctors. Most of them know nothing, and if they can’t help you, they have little time for you. Many of them dramatically underestimate quality of life as an issue.
The shape-shifting nature of long-COVID symptoms also makes our medical system ill-suited to deal with long COVID. (Actually, it’s ill-suited for a thousand reasons. But this is one.) Telling your long-COVID story in 15 minutes, which is what most doctors have for you, is not possible. You develop shorthand. You resort to metaphors. Both are problems. One doctor asked if I thought there was an actual gyroscope in my head, for instance. “Uh, this is a vestibular problem I’m describing,” I said, “not a psychiatric one.” Asshole.
The worst part? Because no one understands what causes long COVID, even the best doctors can only treat your symptoms separately. My blood pressure gets two medications. My vibrating head gets a third. My vestibular symptoms get a fourth. My pain gets a fifth. Inflammation gets a sixth. The microclots I may or may not have, which may or may not cause long COVID, require three different supplements, which may or may not work.
This said, the long-COVID team at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital at least thinks holistically, even if they don’t know what lurks at the heart of my problems. I feel lucky to be under their care (plus two dogged and creative immunologists at Columbia Presbyterian). I cannot imagine what it’s like for the millions of Americans who don’t have access to the minds and resources I do.

Hypothyroidism in Dogs: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment
Tumblr media
When a dog’s thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, a condition called hypothyroidism occurs. Middle-aged and older dogs are most commonly affected. Thyroid hormones help regulate many internal functions, such as metabolism and heart rate. When these hormones are low, vital functions are impaired and symptoms develop. Fortunately, with early detection and treatment, most hypothyroid dogs have a normal life expectancy.
Causes of hypothyroidism in dogs
Lymphocytic thyroiditis, an immune-mediated condition, is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in dogs. It occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the thyroid gland, resulting in significant inflammation and low hormone production. It is unknown why the immune system decides to attack the thyroid gland, but it is thought to be hereditary.
Hypothyroidism in dogs can also occur due to thyroid gland atrophy. During this process, the functional tissue of the thyroid gland is replaced by fat. Veterinarians also don’t know why this process occurs.
A pituitary gland tumor is another cause, but it is extremely rare. The pituitary gland is located at the base of a dog’s brain and is responsible for secreting thyroid stimulating hormone. In dogs with a pituitary tumor, this process is impaired, and the thyroid gland is not stimulated. Therefore, thyroid hormones are not produced.
Tumblr media
Symptoms of hypothyroidism in dogs
Hypothyroidism causes numerous symptoms in dogs, which may include the following:
Weight gain despite a normal appetite
Fat accumulation around shoulders, neck, and hind end
Lethargy
Dull hair coat
Slow hair regrowth
Flaky and/or thickened skin
Patches of alopecia (hair loss)
Slow heart rate
Cold intolerance
Recurrent skin and ear infections
Fertility issues
Reduced tear production (dry eye)
Nerve abnormalities
Dogs with hypothyroidism may have high cholesterol, high fat content and mild anemia on bloodwork.
How to treat hypothyroidism in dogs
Dogs with hypothyroidism require oral supplementation of a synthetic thyroid hormone called levothyroxine. This medication is given daily and is relatively inexpensive. The dose, which is determined by the dog’s weight, may change over time based on his response to treatment. Periodic bloodwork helps the veterinarian assess hormone levels and adjust the dose when necessary. Supplementation is required for the remainder of the pet’s life.
Since hypothyroid dogs are already prone to high cholesterol, switching to a low-fat kibble is beneficial. Omega-3 fatty acids also promote a healthier skin and coat. Your veterinarian can recommend the best type of food to meet your dog’s specific needs.
Life expectancy
Hypothyroidism is not a curable condition. However, most healthy, hypothyroid dogs live long, happy lives with the proper monitoring and treatment. Dogs with additional health issues, such as heart disease or kidney disease, may have shorter lifespans due to the difficulty in managing hypothyroidism alongside concurrent illness.
If left untreated, hypothyroidism results in a poor quality of life, an increased risk of complications and a reduced lifespan. Early diagnosis ensures your pet receives the treatment he needs to be happy and healthy. If you notice any signs of hypothyroidism in your dog, bring him to the veterinarian for evaluation.

Battling Skin Infections: A Dog Owner's Survival Guide"
Tumblr media
As a dog owner, your furry friend's health and happiness are of utmost importance. One common health issue that can plague our canine companions is Skin infections in dogs. These infections can be uncomfortable and distressing for both you and your dog. However, armed with knowledge and proper care, you can effectively battle and prevent skin infections in your four-legged friend. In this guide, we will explore the causes, symptoms, treatment options, and prevention strategies to help you become a skin infection superhero for your beloved pet.
Understanding Skin Infections in Dogs
Skin infections in dogs can manifest in various forms, and they are typically caused by bacteria, fungi, or parasites. Understanding the underlying causes is crucial for effective management. Here are some common culprits:
Bacterial Infections: Staphylococcus and Streptococcus bacteria are often responsible for bacterial skin infections. These infections can occur when the skin barrier is compromised, allowing bacteria to infiltrate.
Fungal Infections: Fungi like yeast and dermatophytes can lead to fungal skin infections. These often occur in warm and moist areas of a dog's body, such as the ears, paws, and folds of skin.
Parasitic Infections: External parasites like fleas, ticks, and mites can cause skin irritations and infections. These parasites not only bite but can also transmit diseases that affect your dog's skin.

Recognizing the Symptoms
Identifying the signs of a skin infection in your dog is crucial for prompt treatment. Common symptoms of skin infections in dogs include:
Itching: Dogs with skin infections often exhibit excessive itching and scratching. This can lead to hair loss and irritated skin.
Redness and Inflammation: The affected area may appear red, swollen, and warm to the touch.
Pustules or Pimples: Bacterial infections may cause pustules or pimple-like lesions on the skin.
Hair Loss: Dogs may experience localized or generalized hair loss in the affected area.
Odor: Skin infections can produce a foul odor, especially in cases of yeast overgrowth.
Open Sores or Wounds: Scratching and licking can lead to open sores and wounds, which may become infected.
Changes in Behavior: Your dog may exhibit signs of discomfort, restlessness, or changes in behavior due to the discomfort caused by the infection.
Seeking Veterinary Care
If you suspect your dog has a skin infection, it's crucial to consult with a veterinarian. They can diagnose the specific type of infection and recommend appropriate treatment. Treatment may involve:
Medication: Depending on the diagnosis, your vet may prescribe antibiotics for bacterial infections, antifungal medications for fungal infections, or parasitic control products for parasitic infections.
Topical Treatments: In some cases, topical treatments like shampoos, sprays, or ointments may be recommended to alleviate symptoms and promote healing.
Preventive Measures: Your veterinarian may provide guidance on preventing future skin infections. This might include recommendations for regular grooming, cleaning ears, or using parasite preventatives.
Dietary Changes: Dietary modifications, such as switching to a hypoallergenic or specialized diet, may be suggested for dogs with recurring skin issues.
Preventing Skin Infections in Dogs
Prevention is often the best strategy when it comes to skin infections in dogs. Here are some proactive steps you can take as a responsible dog owner:
Regular Grooming: Regular grooming is essential to maintaining your dog's skin health. Brushing your dog's coat helps remove loose hair, prevents matting, and promotes good circulation, which can reduce the risk of skin infections.
Clean Ears: If your dog is prone to ear infections, cleaning their ears regularly can help prevent issues. Use a vet-recommended ear cleaning solution and follow your veterinarian's advice.
Parasite Control: Keep your dog on a consistent flea and tick prevention regimen. Check your dog for parasites after walks or outdoor activities, and promptly remove any ticks you find.
Balanced Diet: Feeding your dog a balanced and high-quality diet can help support their overall health, including skin health. Consult with your veterinarian for dietary recommendations if your dog has a history of skin problems.
Hygiene: Bathing your dog with a mild, pet-friendly shampoo can help remove dirt and allergens from their skin. Be sure not to over-bathe, as excessive bathing can strip the skin of its natural oils.
Environmental Management: Keep your dog's living environment clean and dry. Wash their bedding regularly, vacuum your home to remove allergens, and ensure your dog has a comfortable and clean living space.
Regular Veterinary Check-Ups: Routine check-ups with your veterinarian are essential for detecting and addressing potential health issues before they become major problems.
In Conclusion
Skin infections in dogs can be a source of discomfort and concern for both you and your furry friend. By understanding the causes, recognizing the symptoms, and taking preventive measures, you can become a skin infection superhero for your canine companion. Remember, if you suspect a skin infection or any other health issue in your dog, consult your veterinarian promptly for expert guidance and treatment. With proper care, you can ensure that your dog's skin stays healthy, allowing them to lead a happy and itch-free life.

People that intentionally breed to affected animals astounds me. Does it not hurt when you lose a dog? Does it not shatter your world apart?
A lot of these people do shatter when their dog dies but they believe it will not happen to them, or that they will get lucky.
The biggest issue here is that DCM is largely unpredictable. We can see it travel down a pedigree however there is no predictive or preventative measure - your dog is diagnosed with DCM with with regular heart testing (which is why dobes are so expensive, that heart testing ain't cheap) or when your dog collapses and dies. That's it. We have identified two markers highly correlated with DCM but there are dogs clear of both markers who die from DCM and there are dogs with two copies of both markers (highest risk) who live to 15 with healthy hearts.
Unfortunately this means our only option is to not breed clinically affected dogs with diagnosed DCM. Genetic tracking is just not there yet.
This is different from vWD, another doberman disease, which I don't have a huge problem with breeding genetically affected dogs (and clinically affected studs) because vWD is a matter of simple inheritence. You have clears and carriers which show no sign of the disease, and you have affecteds (and not all genetically affected dogs are clinically affected, though I do think it's mean to breed a bitch that's got the symptoms of a bleeding disorder).
For that disease, breeding a vWD affected dog just means breeding to a clear. You will only produce carriers and those carriers won't be bleeders. Those carriers can then be bred to clears to make a mixture of clears and carriers, or even to other carriers (though, personally, I disagree with this practice) to make a mixed bag of clears, carriers, and affecteds as long as said produced affecteds are once again only bred to clears. In this way, you don't throttle your genetic diversity (esp in a breed really desperate for it) but you avoid continuing to produce dogs with bleeding problems.
DCM is much more complex. We do not have a test that tells us which dogs will or will not develop DCM. Many times people's only warning is their dog dropping dead while playing ball in the yard. As a result the ethics of knowingly breeding dogs with DCM is a much different ballgame than vWD.

Ascites in Dogs
Tumblr media
(Source: Mobile Vet Clinic)
Definition
Ascites (also known as Malignant Ascites, Abdominal Effusion or Free Abdominal Fluid) is a condition in which fluid fills up the space of a dog’s abdomen. This condition had the potential to be life threatening, as the buildup of the fluid exerts pressure onto the chest cavity, which causes difficult in breathing and leading to other negative symptoms. Additionally, though the ascites fluid is generally made up of a combination of lipids, bile acids and proteins, closely examining the composition can tell the veterinarian what the underlying cause may be.
Causes
There are various causes of ascites— most of them related to an organ failure —including, but not limited to:
Tumblr media
(Source: PetND)
1. Right side heart failure
2. Heartworm disease or dialated cardiomyopathy
3. Liver disease (hepatitis, portal hypertension, etc)
4. Infection in the abdominal lining (Peritonitis)
5. Ingestion of poison or toxins
6. Lack of protein
7. Presence of cancer or tumours
Symptoms
Should a dog display the following symptoms for a concerning amount of time, take it to a veterinarian for an examination.
1. Lethargy/Weakness
2. Decreased appetite
3. Excessive bloating of stomach/abdomen
4. Sudden weight gain
5. Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
6. Pale or discoloured gums
7. Coughing
8. Diarrhea
Examination, Diagnosis & Treatment
During the physical examination, the veterinarian can use ultrasound, x-rays, chemistry panel, CBC (complete blood count), palpating (touch) and urinalysis, along with examining the fluid contents to diagnose and determine the cause of the ascites.
The treatment for ascites has multiple steps. First, the veterinarian drains the fluid to facilitate the dog’s breathing and for its comfort (this is only a temporary solution, as the fluid will build back up). This is done by inserting a needle into the dog’s abdomen and using an attached tube to draw out the fluid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, the vet needs to address the underlying causes. For instance, if the dog has a tumour or damaged organs, a surgery may be required. Or if the problem is that the dog lacks protein, then a transfusion or special diet is recommended.
Unfortunately, there are some cases where the condition cannot be cured. This is especially common for older dogs.

My heart beat feels like it's been raised up(is that normal). I'm on sub q injections once a week (.25 mg) I will definetly notify my Dr if anything! I couldn't find too much info on this either but I was wondering if you know if taking anti depressants is affected by starting T? I take 20 mg celexa daily and have been for 5+ months and it has helped me life savingly with my depression and anxiety. I just hope my meds don't stop working and it'd just my body adjusting. Sucks to feel the worst symptoms first like sweatiness and hot flashes 😵‍💫
Hiya! Ive actually been in a very similar situation starting out t. Two days after my first shot, I got my period and felt like I wanted to run a marathon, or have a marathon fuck. Literally like a restless dog in sleep HAHA your hormones r responsible for a lot of your bodys actions, and you may notice spikes in ur anxiety due to a number of reasons, including ur wonky hormones changing your emotional and mental state, and anxiety from being hyper vigilant of ur body when u start on HRT. Testosterone DOES increase heart rate, which is why they give you the whole spiel before starting HRT that youre now at risk of heart disease, stroke, and cardiac arrest (essentially, youre no more at risk than any other endocrinologically male person). Im not on an meds besides HRT, so I wud suggest talking to anyone who is on anti depressants and t, and Im sure there is someone who is willing to add on their experience in the notes below. Ive personally felt spikes of my heart rate increasing every now and then and I do believe its the tie, but also from anxiety and how I process it now im on HRT (albiet, my hormones r much more stable and higher). Testosterone can "dull" your feelings and make it difficult to feel at times, so i tend to unintentionally hold those feelings until they sort of burst in spurts of anxiety like that. HRT is HRT and the changes are unavoidable, but adjusting dosage, keeping an eye on yourself, talking to ur doctor, and implementing other coping mechanisms can help. If you feel like u want to talk to ur doctor about ur heart rate, pls do so!

1, 3, 9, and 19 (17 too if you've any you'd like to talk about!) for the fic writer questions?
I just answered 1 from Bucky, and I out of the blue (without checking) just picked 3 as my choose your own adventure answer, so onto the next:
9) Do you visualize scenes in your head before you write them? (Can you picture the setting, character body language etc)
I straight up talk outloud to myself sometimes, and I try to imagine when the body language is gonna look like, how different tones are going to change the setting for the rest of the conversation. Are they going to be angry? Defeated? Sarcastic? Okay - how does that change the response?
Though my current favorite way of getting around this is I have had some rather nice dreams lately that play out like whole episodes of something, and my subcoscious is a GENIUS.
19) What is some random info you happen to have that you used in a fic?
I think every fic I have ever written includes random info from me - like in Once Bitten, TC's comment about rabies and tetanus is because I had just done a massive project on the two diseases for an equine class and I was like EVERYONE IS GOING TO HEAR ABOUT THIS. In a yet unposted 9-1-1 fic, there is a ridiculous amount of info about elephants. Same with sharks in an, again, unpublished fic for Magnum BECAUSE. In the upcoming fic dump for Hudson and Rex, so much dog stuff. Especially shepherd stuff, because I have apparently had nothing BUT shepherds or shepherd mixes for like 30 years now, and just forget they were shepherd mixes. STUPID amounts of info on cults and jurisdiction in my Lucifer fic Damnatio.
17) Do you have any wips that you can tell us about? What are you most excited for in you wip?
Okay, so I fell down this rabbit hole of Hudson and Rex (And dragged @itsjustdg with me - and apparently she grabbed @vix-has-arrived on her way down) hook, line, and sinker. One, all the whump tropes. I mean, canon is like the h/c section in any other fandom on AO3. Charlie is buried alive. Almost blown up. Drugged. Locked in a freezer. Had a mine collapse on him. I'm just waiting for him to get the classic "shot in the side, takes a while to notice, puts his hand on the growing stain, and then passes out" trope. I love Charlie because Charlie is a fundamental introvert - like he can be civil to most people, but really, he likes his three friends and his dog and life is good. So while falling into this fandom and dragging literally everyone I can into it, I have like 6 in the works fic for it, including another Bad Things Happen Bingo card.
This one is based on an idea (not the plot, but the symptoms) for Magnum that I pirated for my own purposes with the help of medicalmacgyver giving me the word of 'orthostatic hypotension' as what random passing out upon standing/sitting upright:
“No, I’m fine,” Charlie dismissed Jesse’s worry with a wave of his hand. “I just feel a little…” He trailed off, the train of thought suddenly derailed. Rex whined insistently, pressing in close to Charlie’s legs, pushing more of his weight against his partner’s knees.
“Are you sure?” Jesse asked, casting a not-so-subtle judgmental eye over the older detective. “You’re looking kinda pale. Are you sick?”
Charlie nodded, then shook his head. “No, I’m not sick. I haven’t been sleeping well, and I think it’s just catching up to me.” It might’ve been convincing, if Charlie sounded less like he was trying to convince himself than Jesse. And Jesse had seen sleep deprived Charlie more than once - the detective had a bad habit of pushing himself beyond what was healthy when he was wrapped up in a case. At least, before Rex came along and the shepherd firmly believe in a 9-5 work day and would drag Charlie away from his desk for much needed breaks.
Sleep deprived Charlie was grumpy, short tempered, and lived off of black coffee strong enough to stand a fork in and give heart palpitations to even the fiercest of energy drink consumers. Jesse would know - he made the mistake once, and never again, of trying a cup of the stuff, and for a whole hour, he would’ve sworn he could taste colors.
This Charlie was different. Spacey might be a more appropriate term. And the fact that Rex’s behavior was progressively more agitated, Jesse suspected it was more than just lack of sleep.
“You know,” he started conversationally, “maybe you should sit down before you fall down.”
Charlie grumbled at that. “I told you, I’m -” he didn’t finish the thought, distracted by Rex pawing at his leg. “What’s up with you, pal?”
Rex butted his snout into Charlie’s palm, whining more insistently, this time adding a short, high pitched bark for emphasis.
“Isn’t that is ‘alert’ reaction?” Jesse prodded.
Charlie’s face looked paler than before, but Jesse didn’t see the tell-tale flush of fever. Maybe it was just sleep deprivation, but something about Charlie’s speech and movement didn’t add up.
“Yeah, but…” Charlie lifted his hand away from Rex’s head, staring at it like it was a foreign object. It trembled violently as Charlie held it up in front of his face, confusion crinkling his brow. “Huh. Thas’ new…”
As soon as Jesse heard the slurred speech, he held his arm out to push Charlie back into his chair - which is the only reason he caught him when his eyes rolled to the back of his head and pitched forward in a dead faint.
‘Caught’ might be pushing it. Charlie was several inches taller than him, and while he wasn’t exactly bulky, dead weight should be measured in tons, not pounds. It was less a catch than ‘preventing Charlie from hitting face first on hard tile because he managed to hit Jesse first and both of them went down’.
Jesse dropped his tablet to catch him in an awkward sort of hug, the unexpected weight dragging them both down to the ground as Rex barked, dancing around anxiously.
“Charlie?” he asked, feeling stupid even as the question left his mouth but didn’t know what else to say. He tried as best he could to gently lay the older detective down on the ground, grimacing and muttering a quick apology as he only barely managed to catch Charlie’s head at an angle that made Jesse cringe. “Charlie? Charlie, come on, man, don’t do this to me…”
Somehow, calling for help didn’t even occur to him until he heard Donovan’s startled voice demanding to know, “What the hell happened?”
“I have no idea, he was talking, and then his hand started shaking, and then…” Jesse didn’t have a word for what happened, so he just mimed Charlie pitching over with his hand.
